Standard 4: Field Identification
Standard 5: Field Identification
Industry-based knowledge and skillsPlant 01.01.02.a. Describe the morphological characteristics used to identify plants.Plant 01.01.02.b. Identify important plants by common names.Plant 01.01.02.c. Identify important plants by scientific names.
◘ Use a dichotomous keys to identify plants. ◘ Complete all field notebook assignments with recordings of
plants on school grounds and on field trips.◘ Record observations in a scientific format in their field
notebooks.◘ Identify 15 plants using a dichotomous key (with 75%
proficiency).
Exceeds(90-100%)
Meets (75-90%)
◘ The student is still developing proficiency in the above proficiency levels.
Developing(0-74%)
Requirements Field Notebook Identification of 6 plants with use of a
dichotomous key Extra Credit Voucher Collection
Dichotomous Keys Dichotomous means
"divided in two parts". Each step has two
choices; what you choose leads you to another question until the item is identified.
Based on physical characteristics.

PROCEDURES1. First make and answer key.
Write the names of your partners and bag # on your ANSWER key.
Assign a number to each object and make up a new name “scientific name” for each object. Example: #1--------Mollusca minuta (small shell) May want to trace an outline of the object
2. Make a dichotomous key for all objects in your bag.
Key Format Example1. A. Item is round………………………go to 2 B. Item is not round…………………….go to 3
Better1. A. Item flat on 2 sides…………..…go to 2 B. Item is not flat on 2 sides…….go to 52. A. Item is > than 4 inches in diameter….4 B. Item is < than 4 inches in diameter… 33. A. Item has “Frozen Four” on one flat side and
“Bauer” on the other side of flat side………….Hockey discus.
B. Does not have any writing on it….go to 6
Agenda 05/18 Greenhouse Finish and Grade each others Dichotomous
Keys Intro to PNW Broadleaved Trees and
Shrubs Use the key.
Grading the Keys Switch bags and keys with another
group. Use their key to identify the items. Write the scientific name next to the
object name. Give them a grade from 1-10 on their
descriptions and accuracy of the items.
Warm-up 05/19Key out the following shrub.Entire Twigs Armed, Stems Round, Prickles exfoliate with bark
Answer 1. Normal Blade 2. Lvs. Alternate 16. Lvs Compound 68. Twigs armed 69. Entire twig/stem armed 70. Leaflets lg, 1.5-3.5” usually 3-5
leaflets Rubus spp p. 184 1. Lvs compound, stems armed 2. Stems round in x-section 4. Prickles exfoliate with bark Rubus spectabilis (Salmon Berry)
Agenda 05/19 Key Practice Together Pass Back
Germination Lab (Test grade) can resubmit with first draft to improve grade.
