Once again this summer students at

Bosworth Academy celebrated excellent A-

level and AS-level results, with the majority of

students now progressing to their choice of

University.

“Success of our students was well

deserved following their many years of

hard work, commitment and dedication to

their studies. Their remarkable

achievements are a result of their true

belief that success can be achieved

through rising to every challenge, being

open to feedback and deliberate,

determined practice. We’re immensely

proud of our staff too who have provided a

tremendous level of support and expertise

for our students. Students’ outcomes are

higher than ever, a magnificent

achievement especially considering that

many of these results were from newly

reformed A levels being assessed for the

first time." - Simon Brown, Head of School

Some individual successes included:

Thomas Lindop achieved A*, A*, A*, A* in

Maths, Further Maths, Physics and

Chemistry and is going to read

Mathematics at the University of Warwick.

Sam Lovett achieved A*, A*, A*, A in

Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Further

Maths and is going to read Mechanical

Engineering at University of Bristol.

Jess Hazell achieved A*, A*, A* in English

Literature, History and PE and is going to

read Sport and Exercise Science at

Loughborough University.

Rahil Morjaria achieved A*, A*, A* in

Maths, Further Maths, and Physics and is

going to read Mathematics at the

University of Bristol.

Amazing A Level Results

Matthew Trotter achieved A*, A*, A* in

Maths, Physics and Chemistry and is

going to read Mechanical Engineering

at the University of Bristol.

Kieran Morris achieved A*, A*, A in

Maths, Further Maths and Physics and

is going to read Mathematics at the

University of Bristol.

Olivia Timperley achieved A*, A*, A in

Biology, Chemistry, Maths and is going

to read Medicine at the University of

East Anglia.

Samuel Foster who achieved A, A, A in

Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics

and is now progressing to the

University of Leeds to read Aviation

Technology with Pilot Studies.

Bosworth Academy is proud that they

challenge all students to ‘be better than

they thought they could be’ by raising the

aspirations of every learner. This is the first

set of A-level results for many subjects

following the introduction of reformed,

linear A-levels with updated, more

demanding content, and only the second

year for others. Therefore the last two

years has proven to be quite a challenge

for students and for teachers as they adapt

to these changes, though one where all

have really risen to the challenges faced.

As well as success measured in grades we

are confident that our young people leave

Bosworth having developed their curiosity,

imagination, resilience and empathy

towards others.

Sam proved that overcoming

adversity through hard work is

worth the effort. After a

difficult start Sam learnt a

whole term of Physics to

enable him to change

subjects. His results are

testament to his

determination to achieve his

dreams. His Mum said:

“Sam’s aim since a very

young age has been to be a

pilot.

Bosworth Academy staff have

gone out of their way to

support Sam in achieving this

lifelong dream. I am now

delighted that he can now go

on to achieve his ambition.”

Jessica was thrilled with her

results and can’t wait to

progress on to university and

undertake the next step of her

‘learning journey’. Her mum

said that her results are due to

all the hard work and effort she

has continuously put in

throughout her time at

Bosworth Academy.

Icelandic challenge

On the first day of the summer

holidays most students probably

enjoyed a well earned lie

in. However, there was a group of

eight students from year eight and

nine who rose early to embark on

their World Challenge expedition

to Iceland; it turned out to be the

trip of a lifetime. The adventure

had been a long time in the

planning, as the students signed

up to the trip almost two years in

advance, and made a

commitment to fundraise in order

to raise the money to pay for the

trip. World Challenge expeditions

are a lot more than a holiday; they

are designed to develop students’ independence, teamwork and

resilience, and this trip was no different.

Camping for seven days on three different campsites, the

students were responsible for buying groceries, preparing meals,

planning and navigating hikes and ensuring that the trip went

without a hitch. They began in the country’s capital city

Reykjavik before moving on to Thingvellir National Park, site of

Iceland’s first settlement and home to its parliament from the

10th century. Thingvellir is also home to the crest of the

boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic

plates; it was certainly a landscape you don’t see here in

Britain.

This was only the start. The stunning scenery and geological

wonders continued to come as the following day was the much

anticipated Golden Circle Tour which took in the amazing sights

of the Gullfoss and Seljandsfoss waterfalls, and the geysers at

Strokkur. To reach the next campsite in the Thórsmörk valley in

the shadow of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (the one that stopped

flights across Europe in 2010), a special car was required to

drive through the rivers and over the rocky terrain. Over the next

three days the students embarked on the most fantastic hikes in

the mountains of Thórsmörk, pushing themselves over

treacherous terrain to access the most spectacular views

imaginable.

It was all over too quickly but it was an experience no one will

ever forget. Look out for more news soon on upcoming

opportunities to sign up to a future World Challenge expedition.

Kenyan adventure Hi my name is Adam Tsang. I was one of the ten Bosworth

Academy students to participate in Camps International expedition

to Kenya for 28 days during the summer holidays. At the airport we

met up with students from 3 different schools, which made our

group of ten into a group of 22 students. I personally decided to do

the trip, as I wanted to understand a different style of life and see

what it is like to live under the poverty line.

Another student, Ben Taylor, described the expedition as a

“wonderful experience” and that he enjoyed every minute whilst he

was there. Like all of us he described the mountain trek as being

tough but loved the spectacular views! He enjoyed spending time

with the locals and learning their traditions.

The mountain trek was a 5 day trek, our aim was to reach point

Lenana, 4,895mts the highest most accessible summit of Mount

Kenya. (the 2nd highest mountain in Kenya, Batian 5.199 mts) On

summit day, we were all woken up at 01.30hrs, we had a light

snack, started our ascent at 02.00am. After a slow, steady,

sometimes difficult climb we reached the snow covered summit in

time for sunrise at 0630 hrs. Our reward - spectacular views and an

enormous feeling of achievement!!!

During the first week we did the mountain trek. We were put

through our paces hiking up Mount Kenya. I loved the whole trip. I

mostly enjoyed the community work as I knew it would have the

greatest impact on the community. For the remaining 3 weeks we

participated in community work. We built toilet blocks,

constructed school desks, planted trees around the border of a

local school. Our wildlife projects included goat deworming, and

we built an elephant deterrent fence.

Over the whole time, when we were not busy, we also took part in

local cultures such as dancing with the Massi, making beads with a

woman’s group, playing football against local children and even

making paper out of elephant dung. I think everyone was glad that

they decided to go and most came out as different people when we

got back to the UK because they no longer take everything for

granted.

Encouraging Young readers Author Visit

We have already had two exciting

presentations take place in The

Compass this academic year to

encourage our students to take

advantage of some of the amazing

books available in our Library and

get reading!

The first of these was on 26th

September when we were thrilled to

welcome author Jo Cotterill to

Bosworth Academy. Jo entertained

the students by talking about her life

as an actress and then a teacher,

and even showed them some writing

and illustrations from when she was

at school. She then went on to talk

about the books she has written,

which are aimed at the young adult market. It was really interesting to find

out about the writing process and how the books are then illustrated making

them more appealing to young readers. Students were able to take part in

some mini-writing workshops and a Q&A session. The visit was aimed not

only at encouraging readers but also getting students to think creatively

when they are writing. Signed books were available to purchase at lunch

time.

Booktalking

On 1st November our link librarian Marissa from Creative Learning Services

came to talk to students from Year 7 and 8 about books which are chosen to

appeal to young people of all reading abilities and explore a number of

themes. These sessions are referred to as 'booktalking'.

Marissa picked nine amazing books for each group of our students. She told

them a little bit about each book and read some extracts. Part of the service

we receive from the Creative Learning Services when they do 'booktalking'

for us, is the loan of few of copies of each 'booktalked' book. Students will

have a chance to borrow and read these over the next 12 weeks.

Understanding

Faith

Year 9 and 10 students at Bosworth

Academy who are taking GCSE Religious

Studies have recently had the opportunity

to listen to a talk by a guest speaker from

Gideons, a Christian organisation who

supply and donate bibles for free. John

talked about his Christian faith and what it

means to him and then answered some

philosophical questions about the bible

and how it relates to life in the 21st

Century. It gave students the opportunity

to understand a Christian viewpoint on

moral issues. Understanding different

faiths and their opinions on important

issues is an integral part of the Religious

Studies syllabus at GCSE so having these

opportunities to meet and talk to people

of different faiths is an amazing

opportunity that will enable students to

answer exam questions with greater

understanding of religious views.

We have a visiting guest speaker from a

local mosque due to speak to GCSE

Religious Studies students to offer the

Muslim religious point of view on

important moral issues. This will be

another excellent opportunity for students

to look at religion and faith from a different

perspective.

Key Stage 3 students will be looking at the

six main religions Christianity, Islam,

Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and

Judaism in their festival unit. They have

started with Diwali and will finish with

Christmas at the end of term.

As part of Inter Faith Week on 12th

November tutor groups explored British

values of tolerance and respecting others.

They worked together to write a Tweet

which we posted on Twitter using the

hashtag #InterFaithWeek, follow us on

Twitter to find out more.

Historic York GCSE History students visited York to consolidate their

learning out of the classroom on Monday 24th

September.

We visited a number of locations including the nuclear

bunker which was much bigger than the one that we have

already been to at Stoke Golding. Bunk beds for staff and

equipment were still in situ and as a result it still felt very real rather than

something that, hopefully, is consigned to the history books.

We also visited Clifford’s Tower which is from a much earlier period in history and

is almost all that remains of York Castle built by William the Conqueror after his

victory at Hastings in 1066. The tower has served as a prison and a royal mint in

its time. The panoramic views from the top of the tower are amazing and are well

worth the steps you have to climb to enjoy them. We then walked down the road

to the dungeons going from the dizzy heights to, what would be for some, the

depths of despair. The actors (I hope they were actors!!), made the experience

very entertaining in what was for many the highlight of the visit. Having been put

on trial, dropped into a pit of snakes and

attacked by highway men on horseback we

were lucky enough to escape and enjoy the

rest of the afternoon at The Shambles which

is a street in the city centre of York with a

long and interesting past. Dating back to

Medieval times it was once the street of the

Butcher Shops. Today the Shambles is

Europe's most visited street with its

overhanging buildings and cobbles.

Exploring Geography Regeneration

Year 10 Geographers had a fantastic

two day visit to Hull for research and

fieldwork on ‘Regenerating Places’,

and how quality of life varies.

Students gathered data and learned

techniques they will be examined on

in Year 11. Behaviour was very good

and we had fantastic weather -

students were a credit to the school,

living up to our motto ‘Be better than

you thought you could be!’

Undertaking public interviews and

especially in an unfamiliar location can be daunting - and yet students proved they

were up to the task!

Hazards

Year 12 and 13 Geographers will soon be attending a Hazards Conference in

Nottingham - to boost both their subject knowledge and exam skills. The

conference is run by experts from Higher Education, as well as examiners for the

AS and A level Courses. We are proud to be taking students from both year

groups on this amazing experience to learn from the best! Students will cover

material on tectonic hazards, risk management and hazard mitigation.

On 11th, 12th and 13th December

Bosworth Theatre Company will be

putting on 'A Christmas Carol'

Pantomime with dance and music

performances included. The show will

take place in the Drama Studio in the

Performing Arts Building at Bosworth

Academy between 6pm and 9pm.

Refreshments will be available for

purchase and tickets cost £3 each

(free for under 5's). All money raised

goes towards funding the Bosworth

Theatre Company to be able to put on

bigger and better shows for the

community. Tickets will go on sale on

Monday 19th November which can be

Boys into

Textiles Day

This term we held a whole day for Year 8 boys to take part in a

project to design and make a pair of shorts. Boys often really

enjoy Textiles lessons in year 7 and 8 but then very few choose

Textiles as their GCSE option or A level. This is possibly due to

misconceptions about what can be made in Textiles and where it

can take you in terms of future careers. This intervention gave

students more of an idea of what GCSE Textiles involves.

Students were chosen because they have shown a talent for

Textiles in design lessons and it may be a good GCSE option for

them to take. Sixteen students were chosen for this intervention

and spent all 5 lessons taking part in the activity which they

thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Year 10 students Katie and Rosie

for supporting.

Sporting Success

Tennis

Congratulations to our Year 8/9 Boys Tennis team who

won the LTA Schools Team Tennis Division 2 title. They

qualified for the final stage of this tournament by winning

several matches against Leicestershire schools in the

summer term and during the finals day competed

against opponents from across the Midlands region in

the Dan Maskell Tennis Centre at Loughborough

University. Well done to Peter, Johnny, James, Daniel

and Ryan who played in the matches.

Congratulations to Dylan Sanghera in Year 9 who has

now made it into the top 30 of the UK Tennis under 14

rankings. Dylan is supported at Bosworth through our

Elite Sporting Potential pathway which aims to help

students who train and compete at a high level balance

their sporting ambitions with their academic studies.

Judo

Ben Stokes in Year 8

has just won the

Bronze medal in the

2018 Midland Area

British Schools

Regional Judo

Championships. He

competed in the

u45kg category in

the Y8/9 age groups

so this is an

outstanding

achievement. Ben is

also part of our Elite

Sporting Potential

group at Bosworth

Academy and has

been selected to attend numerous British Judo

development training camps this year.

Our GCSE Dance students and Year 8 Dance Leaders have recently

taken part in a Studio 79 workshop. Laura, a teacher from the

professional Dance College, Studio 79 came and offered a range of

contemporary and commercial

workshops to our students.

They allowed the students to

develop their technique,

movement and vocabulary in

order to improve their

performance for upcoming

pieces. Students really enjoyed

the opportunity and had lots of

fun exploring new ideas and

trying out different styles of

dance.

Challenge for success

During October we welcomed reviewers form Challenge

Partners to Bosworth Academy to undertake an

evaluation of our provision. A review team comprising of

visiting reviewers from schools across the country and a

qualified Ofsted inspector met with Senior Leaders and

observed many lessons between the 8th and 10th

October. They provide our school with valuable insights

into what is going well and how we can continue to

improve. Their overall findings were: School Improvement

Strategies - Outstanding, Outcomes for Pupils -

Outstanding, Quality of Teaching - Outstanding, Learning

and Assessment - Outstanding. The highlights of the

report were:-

Teachers’ high expectations encourage students to

achieve beyond their potential. As a result, students

have high expectations of themselves and of what

their peers can achieve.

Teachers foster independence in all of their students.

For example, the use of iPads enables students to

research and access learning through Google

classroom or other mobile applications. Students are

demonstrating a growing resilience to failure as a

result of the effective range of strategies to support,

develop and enhance learning.

Students are taking increasing ownership of their own

learning such as in out-of-school clubs and

completing homework to a consistently high standard.

Students are enthusiastic and respectful of their

school. They demonstrate pride in their school at all

times and speak effusively about their positive

experience in education.

The atmosphere for learning in the school is a

particularly strong characteristic. All students feel part

of the school community. This includes those students

who are new to the school such as A-Level students

To further improve we aim to increase more probing

questioning in all classrooms to deepen student learning.

Simon Brown, Head of School stated; ‘We are delighted

with the Review Team’s feedback and we are proud of

our students and staff.’

Students across the school enjoyed

lessons with a difference as we took

part in No Pens Day on 7th

November . The Communication Trust

who promote No Pens Day

encourages schools to put down their

pens and to run a day of speaking

and listening activities which focus on

verbal communication skills. English

students were reading Frankenstein

and demonstrating their learning

through drama. Students in Maths

were using a variety of techniques to

solve problems and there were lots of

practical experiments taking place in

Science lessons.

Art Clubs

If you enjoy art why not go along to the Art

Department and join in one of the lunch

time sessions? Lunch time art clubs run

on an early lunch for years 8,10,12 every

Monday and for years 7,9,11,13 every

Tuesday. They take place in D5 and

students can bring their lunch with them

and turn up on a week by week basis to

work with Mrs. Campton.

Taster Sessions

We will be running Taster Sessions for

anyone in Year 11 who is thinking about

taking ADT subjects at A Level next year

(Art, Textiles, 3D, Photography and

Hospitality). For each subject we are running a taster session after school

in the WB 10/12/18. These sessions will cover workshops that are typical

to a session in A Level lessons. All work completed in these sessions can

be taken away and submitted as a part of current GCSE studies. It will

give students an opportunity to have a go at the subject, ask questions

about the courses, meet staff and other students that are currently

considering these courses.

If you are interested please speak to Miss Morley for more details or look

for details of the sessions on posters around the school.

Are you feeling

We are thrilled to announce that

Investors in People awarded

Bosworth Academy their

prestigious GOLD Award.

Investors in People accredits all

types of organisations who

support and manage people for

sustainable results. They have a

rigorous process of assessment

and criteria which organisations

have to meet in order to receive

IIP accreditation. To receive the

Gold standard is an amazing

achievement for our school and

recognises Bosworth Academy as an excellent place to work, ensuring we retain great

staff and therefore great provision for our students. Many opportunities exist for staff to

constantly improve and challenge themselves and as a school which values

professionalism we understand that this is essential if we wish to provide an outstanding

and constantly improving learning environment.

The extensive report produced by the IIP team states that staff fully support leaders’

aspirations for pupils and moral is high. Online assessment produced by the team

recorded that 95% of staff trust leaders to act in the best interests of the school and

staff feel motivated to achieve their best in relation to clearly set out objectives of the

school. The report states “leaders are passionate about delivering constant

improvement rather than being ‘content’ with the ‘Outstanding’ (Ofsted) judgement.”

The report went on to say that data suggests the school is currently outperforming 85%

of schools nationally, and that leaders are clearly motivating people to achieve above

nationally expected performance. Also included in the report were statements from staff

which demonstrate the embedded ethos of the school, one teacher stated, “We set

stretching objectives for ourselves just as we do for students as we have a shared belief

in growth mindsets.”

The Gold report also highlighted the importance of making staff feel valued and praised

leaders for creating opportunities for staff to recognise and show appreciation for each

other through ‘Star of the Week’ and informal thank you letters and emails. This aims to

keep morale high and increase retention off staff and therefore create continuity for

students as they progress through school.

Head of School, Simon Brown stated:- "We are delighted to be awarded Gold Award from

Investors in People. Professional learning is at the heart of what we do and this framework allows

us to seek feedback and look more objectively at what we do so we can maintain

excellent practice and continuously improve. Our

staff are dedicated to improving their skills and

expertise in all areas of our Academy and this

has a direct beneficial impact on our students."
