THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN BASEBALL HISTORY

The 2004 Red Sox became the first team in baseball history—and just the third team in the history of MLB, the NBA, and the NHL—to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-7 postseason series when they beat the Yankees in a 7-game ALCS.

In Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, the Red Sox rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th inning when pinch-runner Dave Roberts stole 2nd base and came around to score on a Bill Mueller single. David Ortiz ended the game with a 2-run HR in the 12th inning. Game 5 began less than 24 hours later and featured similar drama, as Ortiz once again played the role of hero by hitting a walk-off RBI single in the 14th inning. The Red Sox went on to win Games 6 and 7 in New York. The Sox and Yankees would not face each other in the Postseason again until 2018, when Boston defeated New York in the ALDS, 3 games to 1.

The other instances of an NBA, NHL, or MLB team overcoming a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-7 postseason series have all come in the NHL playoffs (see below).

RED SOX NOTES (CONTINUED)Red Sox Game Notes Page 2

START ME UP: Rick Porcello has made 23 starts against the Yankees in the regular season, going 10-9 with a 3.32 ERA (54 ER/146.1 IP)...He has a lower ERA vs. NYY than against any other opponent (min. 5 starts).

Since the start of 2011, Porcello has a 2.89 ERA against the Yankees (42 ER/130.2 IP).

Porcello started and won the deciding game of the 2018 ALDS at Yankee Stadium (5.0 IP, 1 R, 0 BB).

GOLDEN EYE: Mookie Betts leads the AL in runs (64) and ranks among leaders in walks (T-2nd, 59) and OBP (10th, .379)...His walk rate has improved in each of the last 3 sea-sons, from 14.90 PA/BB in 2016, to 9.25 (2017), 7.58 (2018), and 6.39 (2019)...His rate of 1.07 BB/SO is a career best.

Since the start of his first full season (2015), Betts leads the AL with 508 runs scored.

GLOVE, ACTUALLY: The Red Sox lead the majors with 20 outfield assists; they also have 5 outfield double plays, tied with the Giants for the most in MLB.

Since the start of 2016, Mookie Betts (34) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (34) lead the AL in outfield assists...Since the start of 2014, Bradley’s 19 double plays are 4 more than any other outfielder in the majors.

GREAT WORK, MAN: Sox reliever Brandon Workman has held opponents to a .101 AVG (12-for-119, 4 XBH), the lowest mark in the AL and 2nd-lowest in MLB, just .00007 behind MIL’s Josh Hader (.101)...The .101 mark would be the lowest in MLB history (min. 100 BF), breaking the pre-vious record of .111 (Mike Adams, 2009 Padres).

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE: The Red Sox started the season 22-for-32 (68.8%) in stolen base attempts through 5/13, but they are 24-for-30 (80.0%) since 5/14, the AL’s 2nd-highest success rate in that time (KC-86.4%).

The Sox and Rangers are the only teams with as many as 5 players with 5+ stolen bases: Mookie Betts (9), Andrew Benintendi (8), Rafael Devers (8), Jackie Bradley Jr. (6), and Eduardo Núñez (5).

Bradley is 53-for-61 (86.9%) in stolen base attempts in his career, the 2nd-highest success rate among active players with at least 50 attempts (Buxton-87.5%).

FENWAY PARK: The Red Sox play their home games at Fenway Park, Major League Baseball’s oldest and smallest ballpark...The first regular season game at the venue was played more than 107 years ago on 4/20/1912, when the Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees (then known as the Highlanders) in 11 innings, 7-6, in front of 27,000 fans.

SWEET CAROLINE: During Red Sox home games, fans sing Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” in the middle of the 8th inning...The tradition began when a former worker in the Fenway Park control room played the song as a trib-ute to his newborn daughter, Caroline...As a result of the crowd’s response, it became a daily tradition in 2002.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: The Red Sox won the 2018 World Series after going 108-54 (.667) in the regular season and setting a single-season franchise record for wins, surpassing the previous mark of 105 (1912).

The Sox finished with sole possession of MLB’s best record for the 5th time (also 1903, 1912, 1915, 1946).

BOS was 119-57 between the regular season and Postseason, becoming the 3rd team ever to win that many games in a year (also 1998 NYY and 2001 SEA).

TEAM OF THE CENTURY: The Red Sox have won 4 of the last 15 World Series titles (2004, ‘07, ‘13, ‘18), more than any other team in this century...They became the 3rd franchise to win 4 World Series in a 15-year span, joining LAD (1955, ’59, ’63, ’65) and NYY (most recently 1998, ’99, 2000, ‘09).

BACK TO BACK: The Red Sox are attempting to win back-to-back World Series titles for the 2nd time in franchise history (1915-16)...They also won consecutive AL pennants in 1903 (won WS) and 1904 (no WS played).

The last teams to win consecutive World Series titles are the 1998-2000 Yankees and 1992-93 Blue Jays.

EASTERN STANDARD: The Red Sox have won the AL East title in each of the last 3 years, the franchise’s 1st time ever finishing in 1st place in 3 consecutive years.

Since the AL East was formed in 1969, the only club to win the division in 4 or more consecutive years is NYY (9 straight years from 1998-2006).
