TABLE OF CONTENTS Dear Friends,

This past year marked BPCPS’s tenth year of operation, providing excellent education to the youth of Boston. Starting in 2004 as a school of 100 sixth-grade students and 12 faculty members, BPCPS has grown and evolved in countless ways over the past decade. There have been changes in size, grades served, personnel, and programs offered. However, one element has remained constant – our relentless dedication to our mission to prepare all students to succeed in college and to engage in lifelong ethical growth. Not a day has gone by in the past 10 years when our mission has not been alive and present in the classrooms, hallways, and athletic fields of BPCPS, guiding students and teachers alike toward our vision and goals for the future.

The 2013-2014 school year was marked by success, showing that we are indeed helping students prepare for college, get into college, and succeed once there. For the fourth year in a row, 100% of BPCPS graduates were accepted to four-year colleges, and 100% enrolled in college following graduation. We maintained an 89% college persistence rate, far exceeding the national six-year college graduation rate of 43% for African American and Hispanic youth and 10% for low-income youth. We were honored to be awarded the inaugural Pozen Prize for Charter Schools, a prize to recognize academic excellence and high-quality learning environments in

Greater Boston charter schools. In addition, US News and World Report named BPCPS the top open enrollment high school in Boston. Finally, our charter was renewed for an additional five years, allowing us to continue to serve the students of Boston through 2019.

In a decade marked by growth, this past year was no different. In the middle school, we introduced intensive reading support to build foundational skills. In the high school, we introduced college-level seminars to help students develop the close reading, critical thinking, and discussion skills necessary for college. In preparation for our first class of alumni to enter their senior year of college, we began preparing to help our alumni transition to the workforce, hosting our first alumni professional networking event. In a continued effort to embody excellent teaching, we launched a partnership with WriteBoston to help grow our literacy instruction.

The continued support of our many contributors has been an integral component of our success over the past decade. We are deeply grateful for your shared belief in our mission and your generosity. As we enter our next decade your support is more critical than ever. We hope you will continue this journey with us, as we continue to grow toward our mission to help prepare Boston’s youth for success in college and lifelong ethical growth.

Sincerely,

William Clark Chair, Board of Trustees

THE FIRST DECADE: BUILDING A FOUNDATION

BPCPS opens its doors in Hyde Park to sixth-grade students from

throughout the city of Boston.

Students earn the highest score of any first year charter school to date on the MCAS.

BPCPS’s founding class enters high school and goes on the

first annual multi-day high school retreat.

BPCPS’s first Advanced Placement course is offered,

AP US History, which is enhanced by the first

annual sophomore trip to Washington, DC.

‘05 ‘09‘07‘04Michel and Emmeline Derivois were skeptical about enrolling their child, Dania, in a brand new school in 2004. Soon after Dania was awarded a spot at BPCPS through the school’s enrollment lottery, a member of the faculty came to their home to meet them and answer their questions about the school. As faculty do at home visits with all incoming students, he shared the school’s Contract for Excellence, a document that asks parents, students, and faculty alike to make a commitment to ensuring the students’ success.

Over the past 10 years, the BPCPS community has built a strong foundation for both college readiness and ethical growth. While much has changed in that time, our commitment to our mission has never faltered.

Scott Seider’s Character Compass: How Powerful School Culture Can

Point Students Toward Success is published, detailing the BPCPS

approach to ethical development.

With three classes of college students, BPCPS maintains a college persistence rate

of 89%.

Once the school year began, the Derivois’ were pleasantly surprised that the Contract for Excellence was more than just words. Faculty honored the commitments they had made, going out of their way to ensure Dania’s success. The Derivois, too, lived up to the promises they had made. Elsie Huang, a founding BPCPS teacher, notes, “From the beginning, they embraced the three-part Contract for Excellence. Over the past 10 years, they have never wavered in their dedication to working as a team to ensure their daughters’ success in school.”

Dania is now entering her senior year at Providence College, where she has maintained a 3.4 GPA, is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Scholarship, and is an active member of the African American Society and the

Footprints gospel choir. This fall, Dania’s younger sister, Briana, starts her fourth year at BPCPS, in the 9th grade. Dania feels confident about Briana’s future: “She is in good hands. I know she’ll be prepared for college, like I was. I feel confident about what’s happening here and the way the school is building on the strong support I received as a student, and continue to receive as I’m almost out of college.”

Looking back at Dania’s experience and looking forward at where Briana’s path may lead, Emmeline remarks, “Because of Dania’s experience, I know that Briana is prepared. Briana has improved her writing. I’ve seen from Dania in college that writing is so important. And I know that my girls are prepared because of Boston Prep.”

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTSOur students continue to show that they are growing and learning each year and are on the path to college success.

MCAS RESULTS

Despite starting behind grade level on their entry to BPCPS, 6th grade students outperformed their counterparts in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) on the 2014 MCAS exams.

By 8th grade, BPCPS students outscored their peers at BPS and across the state.

BPCPS 10th graders ranked first in the state, the highest-performing charter in Boston, and matched by only the selective Boston Latin School and Boston Latin Academy.

SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTSBPCPS has garnered widespread recognition for our many achievements, showing that the school is not only one of the best in Boston, but across the country.

Following an extensive application and review process, BPCPS was awarded the inaugural Pozen Prize for Charter Schools, a prize to recognize academic excellence and quality learning environments in Greater Boston charter schools.

Founder of the award, Robert Pozen, remarked, “Boston Preparatory Charter Public School demonstrates its commitment to quality education not just with its stellar MCAS scores, which rank among the best in the state, but with a school culture that places a premium on both academic achievement and strength of character... making it a model for schools across the state to learn from, even as school leaders strive to improve even further.”

Paul Grogan, committee member and President and CEO of The Boston Foundation, noted that there are many strong charter schools in the Boston area. However, “what tipped the balance for Boston Prep in the eyes of the committee was the school’s ability to demonstrate a collaborative learning environment for students and staff, and a commitment to success that extends beyond the student’s career at Boston Prep into higher education and beyond.”

BPCPS was ranked among the best high schools in the state and across the country by US News and World Report. BPCPS was

named the #1 open enrollment high school in Boston and was a gold-gain school on the national level. The only high schools in Boston to rank higher than BPCPS were exam schools, who serve

only top-performing students in the city.

BPCPS was presented with its third charter, allowing the school to continue operation for another five years through

2019. Charters are awarded and renewed based upon a proven track record of success in increasing academic attainment.

COLLEGE PARTNERS

ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENTSOur alumni remain an active and important part of our community. As college students, they are proving that they are in fact prepared for success in college and are embracing ethical growth.

When I started at Boston Prep as a 6th grader, I wasn’t thinking about college at all. My mom talked about it, but I knew college was expensive. We didn’t have much money, so I didn’t think it was a real option for me. It wasn’t until high school that I realized that college was actually an option for me and, in fact, was the only option if I wanted to be successful. Now, in my volunteer work at the community center with younger kids, I’m always telling them to do well in school and be good to others. I emphasize that they need to respect their teachers because those are the people who can help them get places and achieve their goals. That’s what my teachers at Boston Prep did for me, after all.”

2014

2006

PG 10

“ While at Boston Prep, I struggled with my academics because of the rigor. However, there was a constant emphasis on perseverance, and I learned that giving up was not an option for me. Nevertheless, I still doubted that I was going to be successful in college. However, I have just finished my fourth semester of college with a semester GPA of 4.0 and a cumulative GPA of 3.6, and it is absolutely because of the preparation I received at Boston Prep, both academically and ethically. The academics, virtues, and ethical life lessons I gained at Boston Prep are part of who I am today and will stick with me forever, long after leaving the walls of Boston Prep.”

OUR PROFESSIONAL MODEL Our teachers are our most valuable resource, and we could not fulfill our mission without them. Thus, we invest deeply in the development of our faculty.

ONE-ON-ONE COACHING STAFFWIDE DEVELOPMENT• All teachers observed weekly by personal coaches, who provide

immediate written feedback

• Weekly in-person meetings with coaches to debrief observations, analyze data, and create goals and action plans

• Teachers and coaches actively partner together to grow teachers toward both long-term and short-term professional growth goals

• Intensive staffwide development sessions held weekly to promote and support teachers as a community of learners

• Instructional rounds provide opportunity for faculty to receive feedback on lesson plans from colleagues and incorporate new techniques

• Video and data review allow faculty to continuously reflect on their own practice and collaboratively grow toward stronger instruction

EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS: WRITEBOSTONIn combination with our intensive internal professional development, we also bring in external experts where we believe they can be most effectively leveraged and create the greatest impact on student learning. We have chosen to partner with WriteBoston to help drive instruction and student achievement in writing across our humanities departments. A writing coach visits the school weekly to meet individually with every teacher, coach the department chairs in their practice, and lead department wide sessions. Our work with WriteBoston is focused on vertical alignment of curriculum and creating an approach to writing instruction that supports implementation of the Common Core standards. One of the strongest outcomes of our collaboration with WriteBoston has been the growth in students’ ability to recognize what good writing looks like. Students are no longer reliant upon teachers to illustrate strong writing but rather can recognize strong writing independently, label it, analyze it, and then apply the skill in their own writing.
