PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE

• A student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally. An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever is earlier):

– The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution's regular academic year (excluding summer); or

– The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution that occurs before the beginning of any term; or (Revised: 1/11/89, 1/10/90)

– The individual officially registers and enrolls and attends classes during the summer prior to initial enrollment and receives institutional athletics aid.  (Adopted: 4/28/05)

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE

• Boston College Athletic Facilities– Not open to the general public– If used without going through proper channels to

reserve the facility, providing a benefit not available to general prospective student

– Individual now declared a prospective student-athlete

PRIVATE LESSONS

• Prohibited Activities– A member institution, on its campus or elsewhere,

shall not conduct (or have conducted on its behalf) any physical activity (e.g., practice session or test/tryout) at which one or more prospective student-athletes reveal, demonstrate or display their athletics abilities in any sport except as deemed permissible per legislation.

• Not permissible to provide private

lessons to prospective student-athletes

(including volunteer coaches)

PRIVATE LESSONS

• Exception– Private Lessons -- Women's Golf and Equestrian Exception -

Women's golf and equestrian coaches may teach private lessons to a prospect in their respective sports, provided the following conditions are met:  (Revised:  4/28/05 effective 8/1/05)

• The prospect resides within a 50-mile radius of the institution's main campus;

• The coach makes lessons available to the general public;• In women's golf, lessons are only provided to female prospect and the coach

is a teaching professional certified pursuant to the Ladies Golf Professional Association (LPGA) and/or Professional Golf Association (PGA) certification program; (Revised:  4/28/05 effective 8/1/05)

• Fees charged to the prospect are at a rate commensurate with fees charged to all individuals;

• Fees charged to the prospect are not paid by individuals or entities other than the prospect or his or her parent or legal guardian; and

• The institution keeps on file in the office of the director of athletics documentation of the fee charged for the lessons and the name of any individual receiving any portion of the fee.

LOCAL SPORTS CLUBS• In sports other than basketball, a coach may be involved in any

capacity (e.g., as a participant, administrator or in instructional or coaching activities) in the same sport for a local sports club or organization located in the institution's home community, provided all prospective student-athletes participating in said activities are legal residents of the area (within a 50-mile radius of the institution). 

• In all sports, an institution's coach may be involved in any capacity (e.g., as a participant, administrator or in instructional or coaching activities) in a sport other than the coach's sport for a local sports club or organization located in the institution's home community, provided all prospective student-athletes participating in said activities are legal residents of the area (within a 50-mile radius of the institution). 

LOCAL SPORTS CLUBS

• In club teams involving multiple teams or multiple sports, the 50-mile radius is applicable only to the team with which the institution's coach is involved; however, it is not permissible for the coach to assign a prospective student-athlete who lives outside the 50-mile area to another coach of the club.

• A coach also may be involved in activities with individuals who are not of prospective student-athlete age (i.e., before the ninth grade), regardless of where such individuals reside.

• Exception– The 50-mile radius restriction shall not apply to a prospective student-

athlete who resides outside a 50-mile radius of the institution, provided the institution documents that the local sports club is the closest opportunity for the prospective student-athlete to participate in the sport.

LOCAL SPORTS CLUBS• Interpretations

– Volleyball – Involvement with a local sports club outside the contact/evaluation period counts against the 80 evaluation days

– A prospect who relocates to within a 50-mile radius of an institution on a temporary basis (e.g., to participate on a club team or attend an institution while maintaining a permanent residence outside of the 50-mile radius) is not a "legal resident of the area" of the institution regardless of whether the prospect meets a legal standard of state or local residency for governmental purposes. 

– It is not permissible for an individual who officially registers and enrolls and attends classes during the summer prior to initial enrollment and receives institutional athletics aid to participate on a local sports club that involves an institution's coach in the applicable sport unless all provisions of Bylaw 13.12.2.3 (e.g., legal  residence within a  50-mile radius of the institution) are satisfied
