MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT

April 2013

Dear Parents and Students,

In these past weeks, we are celebrating with Christians around the world the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis! His humble manner and gospel witness have won the admiration of so many. And while all are aware that he is a Jesuit who has chosen a Franciscan name, did you know that he has something common with all of our DBP students? When a young man, Jorge attended a Salesian school in Argentina and was positively influenced by the spirit of St. John Bosco.

In 1949 Jorge Mario Bergolio entered Wilfrid Barón Salesian School in Ramos Mejia, Argentina, along with his brother. [Note the photo to the right, of Jorge and his 6B classmates around the bust of Saint John Bosco.] School records indicate that young Jorge received the award his first year for conduct and religion! At age 17, Jorge chose a Salesian priest, Father Enrico Pozzoli, as his spiritual director. It was this Salesian who helped him through a period of ill health and then assisted him in applying for the seminary to study for the priesthood. One of the values that has remained with Pope Francis from his Salesian education is a love for Mary, Help of Christians. While Archbishop of Buenos Aires, every 24th of the month he would go to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in the suburb of Almagro, early in the morning before the doors opened. There he would celebrate Mass and then stay a good hour praying before the image of the Blessed Virgin which had been blessed by Don Bosco himself [before the earliest Salesian missionaries took it with them to Buenos Aires]. As we welcome our new Bishop of Rome, I remind you of Don Bosco’s words: “Let us love the Pope. When he gives some advice and, more so, when he expresses some desire, this must be received by us as a command.”

Cordially,

Father James Heuser, SDB Director/President

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

April 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians, With the resurrection of Christ, all things become renewed, and so it is with the world. As we move out of the darkness of the winter and into the new life of the spring, we welcome the newness of life and the reinvigoration of the school community. Even though the spring weather makes us anxious for the outdoors, there is still much work to be done before the end of the year. We began, just prior to the start of April, the final quarter of the school year. Even for those students who may be struggling, 30% of your grade for the year remains; continue to work diligently right up until the end! For our seniors, be reminded that the school year is not yet over. Colleges will receive your final grades for the year, and it would be unwise to develop poor work habits prior to moving on to university life. As I often say, learning is a habit that we develop through its continual practice throughout our lives. Let’s not allow the distractions of spring create an imbalance in our lives. April is a busy month for The Prep! Monday, April 8th is Max McEachern Day! This annual tradition, rooted in our Auction, affords one of our students to have a day off for himself and his classmates. Sen-iors will have a school holiday on Monday, April 8th. On April 11th, we will host over 500 colleges and universities for our first annual College Fair at Don Bosco Prep. Pre-registration is required for this event, which begins at 7pm in Immaculata Hall. The following day, April 12th, we welcome back many of our alumni for our annual Career Day. The seniors will have a unique opportunity to hear from for-mer Ironmen about their career paths. On Monday, April 15th, I will be hosting my annual “Town Hall Meeting” at 7:30pm in the school cafeteria; please join me for this open forum on the life of the school. On April 19th, we will have our largest fundraising event of the year, The Gold Rush Auction! The auction promises to be a wonderful evening of food and prizes at the Pearl River Hilton. Please join us for this fun-filled event. We also celebrate the achievements of our students who will be inducted into two of our honor socie-ties this month. On Wednesday, April 18th we will host our induction ceremonies for the English Honor Society and the following Wednesday we will induct students into the Math Honor Society; both events are at 7pm in the DeSales auditorium. Finally, please join us for our annual Spring Concert, which will be held in the auditorium on Tuesday, April 30th. Our boys have been working hard in their preparation for the concert, and for our senior performers, this will be their final concert. Again, let us enjoy the warmer days of Spring as we move closer towards the conclusion of another successful school year!

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Welcome to the Age of Technology. It would seem that hardly a day has gone by in these past months and years, that we haven’t seen a technology-related story in the news. While some of these articles are good, and speak of technological advances, some are not so good and point to harassment/bullying, cyber- stalking, betrayal of the public trust and a wide variety of other social and/or statutory wrongs. It seems that no group is exempt from being guilty of these technology-use missteps. Whether it is a politician, emergency service worker, educator or student, people in every walk of life will potentially be impacted by internet and other technology. Sometimes they are the victim (intentional or not), the perpetrator (intentional or not) or become collateral dam-age, such as a friend or family, of another’s actions. I noted “unintentional” above as we have seen a number of situations when the person responsible for an inappropriate posting or exhibit did not intend for other or them-selves to suffer as a result of the action. They came to find that the unsuitable posting of any depiction, text, Tweet, e-mail or Facebook entry has the potential consequence of permanently altering their or another’s life or, at the very least, seriously disrupting it. Frequently, these problems would have been avoided if the individual had first thought of the aftereffect of their action. In this era when computers, laptops, communication “tablets”, cell phones and other portable devices are so common, students must be instructed and monitored on the use of technology long before they enter high school. Don Bosco can teach proper hands-on computer technique and mandate computer use policy/ general conduct re-quirements via the Handbook, but these mechanisms are only beneficial if they are an adjunct to what is learned at home. The Prep has and will continue to educate our young men on technology-related issues. As a graduate of DBP, I can tell you that the “Bosco Grapevine” has always been an effective tool in unofficially notifying students when others have suffered a consequence as a result of a misstep. Despite this and other more official advisories, we continue to see issues arise that are of concern in regard to student communications. I and other staff members here at Don Bosco have and will continue to have conversa-tions with students in regard to technology. We request that you continue this ongoing process of education in the home. The message: Please act responsibly and remem-ber that almost nothing that goes out over social media or other communication net-works is absolutely private. Please accept my best wishes for a Happy and Blessed Easter. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Best Regards, Ed Nekel

Sports Physicals REVIEWED Over the last 4 weeks the Athletic Trainer and I reviewed over 400 physicals. I am using this time and space to go over some information that will hopefully help you with this process in the future. -KNOW WHEN YOUR SON’S LAST PHYSICAL WAS DONE A physical is good for 365 days, not one day more. Insurance companies only permit one physical a year. If your son’s physical is less than a year old, going for another office visit will only mean that the doctor puts last year’s results and date of last year’s physical. Plus, you will need to pay out of pocket for it. If try outs start around the time your son’s physical needs renewal, make sure you plan ahead and make an appointment for the next physical without exceeding the validity of the current physical. Call your insurance company. You may find that they allow you to come in slightly earlier than the anniversary date of last year’s physical. (Mine allowed me to bring my children up to 4 weeks earlier than last year’s physical without penalty.) -HAVE THE PHYSICAL COMPLETED ON THE PROPER FORMS A physical consists of 2 parts. Part A is called the Health History Questionnaire and is filled out by the parent. Part B is completed by the doctor, signed, dated and stamped. The proper procedure is that you fill out Part A and bring it to the doctor to review as your son is having his yearly physical. Both forms should be sent to me. If I do not receive both parts, the physical is incom-plete. Both forms are available for you to print from the Health Services page on the Don Bosco website. No other Doctor’s office forms are accepted. -UPDATE PHYSICALS AS NEEDED If your son’s physical is still current, but more than 2 months old, I would need a Health History Update. It is also found on line on the Health Services page. This is filled out by the parent. It basically states that your son is healthy and that he is well enough to start a new sport, despite the physical being older. If your son’s physical is more than a year old, a Health History Update won’t make up for a lapsed physical.. -READ YOUR EMAILS Watch out for email communications from the Athletic Trainer and/or coaches. They may have direc-tions that will make readying your son for his sport much easier. -GET PAPERWORK IN EARLY If your son plans on being in sports, send the physical exam forms in right after seeing the doctor. It gives me more time to review them. It will, most likely, be the same form you need to submit before he starts his new sports season. Physical forms should be sent to me in the Health Office. They can be mailed, faxed 201 327 3397, put in my mailbox in DeSales, or sent in with your son. -CALL ME WITH ANY HEALTH RELATED QUESTIONS. 201 327 8003 X122 Bridget Cena, School Nurse
