Born Survivor Fundraising Event

Summary

Roz Ryan and Shan Pulman are raising $7,000 for the entry fee to participate in the Cure Kids $10 Queenstown Challenge, which begins on October 1, 2015.

Roz and Shan’s Fundraising Event for their Entry Fee: Born Survivor

The Born Survivor Challenge Race will consist of both a 5K and 10K Obstacle course race to be held at Matakana Country Park.

The event will take place on 28 March, 2015. The event costs $65 per person for the 5K and $80 per person for the 10K.

Entrants participate in teams of 2 or more, which enables team work and confidence building.

All monies over and above what goes to pay for course rental will go towards Roz and Shan’s entry fee.

(Note that Roz and Shan intend the Born Survivor event to be an annual one, to continue to raise money for Cure Kids.)

What is the $10 Queenstown Challenge?

The $10 Queenstown Challenge was founded in 1993 by Cure Kids and today is a major fundraising event for that organization.

All teams pay $7000 to enter the three-day challenge, which has its start line in Auckland.

Each competitor is given $10 to survive on throughout his or her travels. Cure Kids provides accommodation each night as well as dinner and breakfast each day.

The route is kept top secret, with travel between destinations largely reliant on the kindness of strangers – no sneaking off to call mum or aunty to pick you up!

Along the way competitors are set various dares and challenges designed to test each team’s brain, body and creative bent.

Points are awarded based on each team’s performance in the challenges, with first place awarded to the team with the most points.

It’s challenging, it’s fun, and all proceeds go to Care Kids.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Roz and Shan are seeking sponsorship from businesses throughout Auckland to both provide publicity for the event itself and donate prizes for the participants.

They’d also like the businesses to sponsor them with additional funds toward their $7,000 goal to enter the $10 Queenstown Challenge.

Starting Line/Ending Line Sponsorships

Sponsors who provide refreshments (water, food) will have booths situated at the starting/ending line and may display their own banners.

Obstacle Sponsorships

Sponsors who provide other items – for example simply funds! – will have banners or flags by an obstacle – stating they had sponsored that obstacle.

Why the Cure Kids $10 Queenstown Challenge?

My name is Roz Ryan. I’m turning 40 in 2015, and I decided I wanted to complete the Cure Kids $10 Queenstown Challenge for my birthday. I am partnering with my friend and sister-in-law Shannon Pulman We are both veterans of obstacle races and know we can take anything the Challenge event designers can dish out.

Raising Money for Cure Kids Both Shan and I are passionate about raising as much money as we can for Cure Kids to help fund vital medical research into life-threatening illnesses that affect children. Shan and I are both mums and we are very aware of how lucky we are to have healthy kids. But there are so many out there that are not as lucky. We want to help Cure Kids provide services to as many kids in need as they possibly can. These kids, as well as the amazing Cure Kids ambassador Eva Mitchell, give us the inspiration to complete the $10 Queenstown Challenge.

Entry Fee Fund Raising Activities Cure Kids provides a Fund Raising toolkit for all teams who need to raise the $7,000 entry fee, and putting on an obstacle course race was one of their suggestions. So we decided to hold the Born Survivor 5K and 10K Races as part of our fundraising activities.

Future Goal: Born Survivor 5K and 10K Races to be An Annual Event The Born Survivor 5K and 10K Races will not be a “one year and done” event. We intend to hold it every year in order to continue to raise funds for Cure Kids.

Biographies of Roz and Shan

Roslyn Marie Ryan was born in West Auckland. She is married to Brad and they have two children, Ethan aged 6 and Carter aged 22 months. She is a marketer and a mum. “I love fitness - getting out and working out. I have a passion for running stairs and completing obstacle events and have recently started crossfit. I love socializing and enjoying some great food and wine at the same time and spending time at the beach. The reason I decided to do this challenge was because I am turning 40 this year and what a great way to remember this year by doing such an awesome challenging event and paying it forward at the same time. I am very grateful to have 2 healthy children. I can’t imagine how different our life would be if that was not so. So by doing this challenge I hope that in some small way we can contribute to more research for curing kids. I am also excited about the potential of the Born Survivor Event being an annual event to continue to raise money for cure kids after our Challenge is done. Shannon Claire Pulman was born in West Auckland. She is married to Aaron and they have a human child, Kelsie (age 2 and a half) and a fur child Haggis (a border collie). She is a primary school teacher as well as a mum. Her favorite hobbies are zumba, and sports such as touch rugby, netball, running and fishing. “The reason I’m doing this is because my amazing sister-in-law (that’d be Roz) has convinced me to do it.

It’s something completely out of my comfort zone but that’s why its going to be awesome. You only live once and I’m thankful to her for giving me a push to get involved in such an amazing experience for such a great cause.

Some families face a lot of difficulties and the hand of cards they’ve been dealt isn’t very fair. it will be nice for us to feel that we’ve contributed even in some small way to helping making their lives a bit better.”
