COMMUNITY THEATER Monsters, Mayhem, and A Movie

The arts are a vital part of communities. Community theater can and, some believe, should be a fundamental part of an area’s overall arts and culture milieu. By definition, there are two meanings for community theater. One is the human organization, usually non-profit, staffed by volunteers, with actors, producers, stage hands, directors, a board, etc. The other definition is the inanimate one: a permanent venue, often an old theater building, having been (or in the process of being) restored—sort of recycling on a grand scale. In the latter category (‘in the process of’) we have the historic Braumart Theatre in downtown Iron Mountain, MI. Spearheaded by the incredibly hard-working Friends of the Braumart, plans to create a comprehensive community arts center are moving ahead. In the meantime, performances are now regularly scheduled, giving the Border-land area a peek and a promise of an exciting future. Upcoming events include a special promotional screening of the U.P. motion picture Northbound on September 11 at 7:00 pm CT. On October 22 through 25, a hideous monster will come to life on the Braumart stage. Dickinson County Community Theatre (DCCT) presents Frankenstein by Mark Sharf. Director Ali Mondloch chose this version of the play because it holds true to the original story by Mary Shelley. And more mayhem occurs on October 29-31 as DCCT hosts a Haunted House at the Braumart. A Gem of a Season The fully developed and restored Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls, MI wraps up its Gem of a Season with three presentations. The aforementioned Beethoven and Banjos plays at the Crystal on September 27. On Saturday, October 3 from 5 to 9 pm CT, there’s definitely a German flavor with an Oktoberfest Fundraiser held at the George Young Recreational Complex near Iron River. There will be food, music, and a silent auction. On Sat., Dec. 6, it’s the Holiday Extravaganza with music and good cheer. These events come on the heels of a spectacularly successful performance by Josh Davis, the third place winner on TV’s The Voice. The afternoon August 9th show was a complete sell-out with popular demand resulting in an added show for that evening. At the Crystal Theatre, the season has truly been a gem!

Northstar

A series of movie episodes released earlier this year comprise the film Northbound, which will be shown at the Braumart Theatre in Iron Mountain. This film project is a prelude to the full-length motion picture entitled Northstar which will be shot across the Upper Peninsula. Northbound is the story of a father’s struggles to keep his daughter safe after a mysterious event breaks down civil order. The one-night-only Braumart showing will be on Friday, September 11 at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and are free for children under 12. They can be purchased online at www.friendsofthebraumart.org and at the Dickinson Area Chamber Alliance. This film project is headed by Iron Mountain natives Seth and Nathan Anderson. Seth is the screenwriter, director and editor, while Nathan is the art director and creative consultant. Their U.P.-based production team includes actors Nate Alwine and his daughters Callie and Addie. Austin Kalec serves as a director and produc- tion designer, while photographic duties are shared by Dan England, Adam Barkle, Katherine Alwine and Nick Jensen. Evan Blagec is the military and production advisor. Serving as Michigan Logistics Coordinator is Fay Mannon-Rahoi who can be reached at [email protected]. The entire filmmaking team will be on hand to answer questions, discuss future production plans and raffle off prizes exclusive to the project. For more information on the film, go online to www.lullskull-northstar.com.
