Teak

Teak is a dense, coarse-grained hardwood that has been used for centuries in boat building and furniture making.

Renowned for its high oil content, which makes it naturally weather resistant, it makes elegant outdoor furniture that lasts for many years.

Our teak timber will have a green appearance when it is first made into furniture. This is due to the special Exterior IsoGuard treatment we

use to ensure the furniture’s longevity. Exposure to sunlight will cause the table to weather to a beautiful silver grey over a few months.

During the first 12 months of weathering you may find the grain lifts slightly and small cracks appear on the end grains. Please rest assured

this will not affect the structure of your furniture and will subside over time.

General Care

Here are a few additional tips to help you look after your beautiful teak furniture:

• Teak contains natural tannins that may leach out of the timber during its first few rain showers. Try to avoid placing your furniture on

a porous surface, such as a flagstone terrace, during the initial weathering process, to avoid staining the stones.

• If your teak furniture requires cleaning, use a normal household bristle brush (not too hard) and some warm, mildly soapy water. Finish

by washing the product down with clean water. We do not recommend the use of high pressure hoses, steel wool or steel wire brushes,

as any residue left in the grain will rust and discolour the wood.

Exterior IsoGuard™

At Neptune we use IsoGuard™ to protect all our natural timber and we passionately believe that you can get years of stain-free use out of any

timber treated with it.

We love IsoGuard™ because it protects your furniture whilst retaining the natural look of the timber.

IsoGuard™, which uses only the best natural materials, soaks into the wood and binds with it at a molecular level to provide long-lasting

protection from stains and marks.

The oil, which is engineered to the highest specifications, coats and binds with the cellulose and lignin cells in the timber. Special waxes within

the oil help it repel stains and marks without creating a barrier, allowing the wood to act naturally as well as looking great.

Caring for your IsoGuard™ Product

IsoGuard™ is strong, durable and will leave you with a stain-free surface if you treat it as you would any other natural timber finish.

The key is acting as soon as you can to clean up all stains.

However, hot plates and pans can still leave a mark. We therefore recommend that you use mats for hot/abrasive items.

If you do spill something on the timber, clean using only a damp cloth. In most instances rubbing the affected area vigorously will remove

marks quickly and simply. Afterwards remove any moisture with a dry cloth to avoid water marks.

Repair/Refresh your IsoGuard™ Product

Sometimes if the stain is left for longer than 24 hours, or if the staining agent is very causticor greasy (such as beetroot or olive oil) a stain will

not be removed by normal cleaning.

Sometimes stains become part of your furniture’s history: the bumps and marks helping you to love it even more. But if you feel a stain is

negatively affecting the look or feel of a piece of furniture, you can, through some simple and easy-to-follow steps, remove almost all stains.

The process involves some elbow-grease and some tools, but will result in timber that looks almost as perfect as it did when it left the Neptune

Over time cleaning and rubbing can also slowly erode the protection offered by IsoGuard™, so after a few years you may also wish to refresh

your furniture with a new coat of IsoGuard™.

Breaking down the process

Timber is a natural, organic material with variations in its grain and this means some areas of the wood will be harder than others. These

differences, caused by the way timber grows over time, mean that IsoGuard™ will be soaked up by the timber at different rates in different

places. Our method ensures that all your furniture’s timber will be protected against stains and marks, whilst retaining its natural beauty, for

years to come.

Although IsoGuard protects against staining, your table will still weather naturally to an elegant silver grey.

Application

IsoGuard Exterior Primer and Treatment Oil are very easy to apply, and a little goes a long way.

IsoGuard Exterior Primer

New wood: 1 litre = +/- 15 to 20 m2

Restoration: 1 litre = +/-10 m2

Stage 1: Preparation:

1. Lightly sand the table and remove all dust

2. Ensure the furniture is completely dry and apply the IsoGuard Exterior Primer with a cloth, brush or sponge.

3. Thoroughly remove all excess with a clean cloth.

4. Allow the Primer to completely dry before moving onto the next stage of the process.

Stage 2: Application

1. Pour the IsoGuard™ directly onto the timber and spread across the entire area, using a nylon non-abrasive pad. No pressure needs

to be applied to the pad: it will evenly distribute the IsoGuard™ without scratching the surface or soaking up the oil.

2. Set a timer for 10 minutes to ensure the oil has enough time to soak into the timber. Do not exceed 15 minutes, or the oil becomes

hard to remove.

3. Using a circular motion, keep the IsoGuard™ moving constantly and ensure the entire area being treated is covered throughout

the process.

4. As it does not react with itself, you cannot apply too much IsoGuard™. If any part of the surface does not have a good covering of

IsoGuard™, use the pad to work the oil from another area of the surface to fill in the ‘gap’.

Stage 3: Finishing

1. Dampen a fresh cloth with a small amount of IsoGuard™.

2. Run the cloth firmly along the grain to remove unnecessary excess. You should find the IsoGuard-dampened cloth slides easily

over the surface. You should end up with a consistent, even finish that is greasy to the touch.

3. As a final check, look along the timber from a number of different low angles to double check the finish is smooth and consistent

across the timber and does not feature any smears.

Stage 4: Drying and Curing

1. The timber should not be touched for at least 24 hours.

2. In the first week, do not clean with liquids, but use a dry cloth to wipe the table down.

3. In the second week use a slightly damp cloth to clean, if you are using a tablecloth remove it when the furniture is not in use.

Stage 4: Drying and Curing Continued

4. After three weeks the IsoGuard™ will have cured fully, and you can use a soapy cloth to clean the table, but a damp cloth will

remove most marks.

5. (IMPORTANT) After you have finished soak the cloths and pad you have used to apply the IsoGuard in water before disposing of

them safely. Please note if you do not do this, as with most timber oils, the oil creates an exothermic reaction as it dries, meaning

the cloths could catch fire, so make sure they are thoroughly washed through and folded rather than scrunched up.

Weather Resistance

Neptune Garden Furniture is designed to live outside and as such is manufactured to a very high standard. However, here are some handy

tips to help prolong its life even further:

• Store your furniture inside during the winter. We cannot guarantee your furniture is frost proof so it will help to protect it from the harsh

winter weather. Just make sure you dry it thoroughly first to avoid mould spots.

• Be wary of using covers to protect against frost as condensation can form underneath them.

• During the summer months covers are very useful for heavy rain.

Just make sure they do not touch the furniture to avoid moisture forming on the surface.

A last bit of advice...

All furniture should be lifted and moved rather than dragged to prevent any damage to the product or the area in which you are using them.
