Bora ka Roza - Ahmedabad Community Composition: Homogenous General Description: This is a a small settlement located next to an active railroad line. There are about fifty houses in this location. This is an illegal settlement on railroad land. Many of the men work as rickshaw drivers. There are a few mills/ workshops at the end of the settlement, and most people who work there have individual toilets in their homes. Sanitation Situation: There is a public toilet in front of the community, with two men’s (one broken down) toilets and two women’s toilets. There is no water in the toilet, so people bring it from home. Many people have individual bathrooms for bathing in front of their homes. Top Reasons to Choose This Location/Unique Aspects: - The location itself, situated next to a railroad track, is unique. This is also one of the smallest communities we visited. - The toilets are being run by the people themselves, w/o any external care/ maintenance. It would be interesting to see how the community manages in such bare minimum sanitation facilities. - Since there are limited toilet seats, the kids are forced to defecate near the railway tracks or under the bridge. - Individual toilet/a community toilet/open defecation all co-exist in a small ecosystem.
