1 Introduction The BOOST POWER 12-12 is a Li-ion rechargeable battery pack supplied by BOOST POWER that provides 144Wh of energy at a nominal 12VDC and 12Ah capacity.

Ordering Part Number: 2402863

The BOOST POWER 12-12 is a drop-in replacement for the 12 volt 12Ah lead-acid battery and provides 12Ah capacity with the following key advantages over the lead-acid options: 1. Longer life – Higher usable energy. 2. Longer lifetime in float applications. 3. Longer cycle life. 4. Longer shelf, storage life –Lower self discharge. 5. Smaller and Lighter Systems –Higher Power and Energy density. 6. Higher power capability – both during discharge and subsequent recharge. 7. Greater efficiency – Less energy lost during high rate applications, less power required to keep fully

charged. 8. High degree of safety – due to stable chemistry 9. Limited environmental impact – lead free and no hazardous material content.

2 General Description The BOOST POWER 12-12 battery pack consists of Lithium-Ion cells along with internal cell protection and balancing circuits. The pack has a 4S5P cell configuration. It is divided into four series elements of five cells in parallel for a total of eight cells providing a nominal voltage of 12 volts and capacity of 12Ah.

2.1 Compatibility with standard Lead-Acid Batteries This pack is mechanically and functionally equivalent to existing “12V12Ah” lead-acid batteries and compatible with most chargers in use today. For special lithium chargers contact BOOST POWER.

3.2 Charging Characteristics The battery pack requires a battery charger with the following parameters:

Parameter Minimum Limits

Maximum Limits

Comments

Charging Continuous Current 40.0 A Recommended 12A

Terminal Float Voltage 14.2V 14.8-15V Optimal Energy Storage and battery life

Charge Time 20 min At 40A Charging Current

3.3 Balancing Balancing is necessary to provide the user with maximum usable battery capacity and life. To prevent the cells from diverting in capacity, the cells must be balanced periodically. This self-balancing process will take place automatically during the charge cycle by the built in controller.

3.4 Protection Various circuitries in the BoostPower module protect the cells and provide safe operation of the pack. The following features are provided in the battery:

3.4.1 Weld strap fusing The weld straps will serve as an emergency fuse to interrupt the flow of current in case of short circuit. The battery is permanently disabled when this event occurs.

4 Battery Life

4.1 Cycle Life and Calendar Life Both cycle life and calendar life are key parameters for battery systems. Cycle life is typically defined as the number of times a battery can be charged and discharged before its capacity falls below 80% of its original capacity, or below 60% of its original power. Similarly, calendar life is defined as permanent capacity loss over time, irrespective of use conditions.

In order to fully understand cycle and calendar life, it is important to examine those two aspects, power and energy, and to determine how the battery performs over time on both of these metrics.

The BOOST POWER 1212 battery has approximate 7000 100% DOD cycles at 25°C with 1C charge and 1C discharge to 80% of original capacity and typically does not exhibit rollover characteristics at the end of life. As shown below on the graph (blue), there is minimal impedance growth.
