tion to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim.

Prerequisites: Must be at least six months of age, no skill prerequisites.

Preschool Aquatics Level 1 - your child is introduced to basic skills. These

skills lay the foundation for developing water competency and skill develop-

ment for future use. In addition, your child starts to develop safety skills and

a positive attitude about the water.

Prerequisites: Must be a minimum of 3 years of age.

Preschool Aquatics Level 2 - continues to lay the foundation for developing

water competency and further skill development, and it marks the beginning

of independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children will continue to explore

using simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back

to gain proficiency in preparation for performing strokes.

Prerequisites: Must be a minimum of 3 years of age and completion of Pre-

school 1

Learn-to-Swim Level 1- introduction to water skills, your child is introduced to

basic skills as the foundation for future skills and the development of water

competency (basic minimum skills needed for water safety).

Prerequisites: Must be a minimum of 6 years of age or completed Preschool 1

and 2

Please note: It is quite common for children to participate in several sessions

of Preschool 1, Preschool 2 or Learn-to-Swim Level 1 before they are able to

successfully demonstrate all the skills. That's okay! It's essential to achieve

each skill, rather than quickly move through a level.

Learn-to-Swim Level 3 - Stroke Development, instructors follow a plan to introduce new

swimming and water safety skills while building on previously learned skills. Your child

learns to swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke at a rudimentary while also be-

ing introduced to the scissors and dolphin kicks, survival float and increased time duration

for treading water. The rules for headfirst entry are established, and swimmers learn to

enter the water headfirst from a seated position poolside.

Hello Parents, Did you know that the best predictor of a child’s success in school is parent engagement in the learning process? Especially for young children! It is important to provide a wealth of experiences that will give your child the understanding and the skills that will support their future success in school. Simple things like reading to your child every day, providing opportunities to be with other children to develop social skills, talking with your child about their world to expand their vocabulary and using everyday routines as opportunities to teach your child such as: pointing out shapes, colors and letters in the envi-ronment, having them set the table, letting them help with cooking and even having them sort laundry with you. All of these are opportunities to develop the early foundations that will support them later in school. Chris DeGroote, EC Coordinator

EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING

The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a simple tool used to asses how your child is doing. The State of Minnesota recommends that screening to take place at 3 years of age. This helps districts identify, at an early stage, possible health or learning concerns to ensure proper educational assistance before starting school. During the Early Childhood Screening (ECS), highly-qualified staff including licensed early childhood teachers, speech pathologists, and school nurses will check your child’s vision, hearing, growth, immunization status, and skills in thinking, communication and language, large and small muscles, and social/emotional development. All of this information is important successful continued learning and future school success. Parents/Guardians will be given a full report of your child’s learning and growth, along with, valuable information to aid in the educational, social and emotional growth of your child. For questions about ECS in either Proctor or Hermantown, please call 628-4958 ext. 1 or email [email protected].
