The 2019 edition of Books That Shaped Our Leaders has just landed on my desk and there is one single word I would use to describe how it made me feel. Grateful. Grateful for our team, guests, partners and most of all grateful for YOU, the #FBPFamily that have continued to support us through another year of the show. 2018 was a big year for The Fitness Business Podcast. Most podcasts don't survive more than 7 episodes or around 3.5 months, yet in November of this year, we celebrated 200 episodes - yes 200! This major milestone makes me very proud of what we have achieved. Back in 2015 we set out to produce a show that would help fitness business owners, managers and fitness professionals become more successful and more profitable. We had a goal of providing quality content week in week out. Education from the best of the best from both within and outside the industry. And I feel proud because I know our team believe in that goal and live it every day. Just like our first two editions, this e-book provides direct links to the books that are most relevant to our industry. It was created for YOU, the fitness owner, the manager, the personal trainer and the entrepreneur.

One Hundred Thirteen Million Markets of One – How The New Economic Order Can Remake The American Economy

The recent focus on the one percent, a group that has come to be associated with wealth and power, obscures where the real source of capital and power lies today. Seventy seven per cent of discretionary spending - the engine that drives the American economy - comes from just 46 percent of the population. This largely undetected group is responsible for those parts of the American economy that are thriving despite the toughest conditions in living memory. We call them NEOs,

short for the New Economic Order, as their spending adds up to an economy within an economy wherever they are.

Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine

Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only

what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.

With dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor, Michalowicz has the game-changing roadmap for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.

Book recommended by Scott McKenzie

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*c

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet

blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

In her instant, multi-month New York Times bestseller, Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.” “Inspiration for non-geniuses everywhere” (People). The daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,”

Angela Duckworth is now a celebrated researcher and professor. It was her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience that led to her hypothesis about what really drives success: not genius, but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance.

Outwhitting the Devil

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to reveal how fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy prevent us from realizing our personal goals. This long-suppressed parable, once considered too controversial to publish, was written by Hill in 1938 following the publication of his classic bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. Annotated and edited for a contemporary audience by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Three Feet from

Gold coauthor Sharon Lechter, this book--now available in paper--is profound, powerful, resonant, and rich with insight.

Priceless

In Priceless, the bestselling author William Poundstone reveals the hidden psychology of value. In psychological experiments, people are unable to estimate "fair" prices accurately and are strongly influenced by the unconscious, irrational, and politically incorrect. It hasn't taken long for marketers to apply these findings. "Price consultants" advise retailers on how to convince consumers to pay more for less, and negotiation coaches offer similar advice for businesspeople cutting

deals. The new psychology of price dictates the design of price tags, menus, rebates, "sale" ads, cell phone plans, supermarket aisles, real estate offers, wage packages, tort demands, and corporate buyouts. Prices are the most pervasive hidden persuaders of all. Rooted in the emerging field of behavioral decision theory, Priceless should prove indispensable to anyone who negotiates.

A Short History of Nearly Everything

In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail—well, most of it. In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand—and, if possible, answer—the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got

from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds. A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.
