What is a WBS?

“WBS is the process of

subdividing project deliverables

and project work into smaller,

more manageable components.

The work breakdown structure

(WBS) is a deliverable-oriented

hierarchical decomposition of

the work to be executed by the

project team to accomplish the

project objectives and create the

required deliverables”

WBS principles should help Project Managers obtain a good

segmentation of their projects

Can the Work

Package Owner

master all the

activities?

Is the budget too

small or too

large?

Is the timescale

too short or too

long?

Does it involve

too few a

number of

people or too

many?

Tests of a good segmentation:

The scope

Page 9: Booklet WBS V0.8

Page 9

A large project may have only

one work package while a

smaller one has 23!

The WBS project segmentation should be reflected in SYSTRA’s

information system

Page 12: Booklet WBS V0.8

C

Contractual lots: CWBS

Page 12

The CWBS allows for the isolation

of an element to which a specific

budget, timeframe and

deliverables are associated.

A project may benefit from a finer

segmentation into geographical

zones or into structuring

elements (stations, tunnels,

bridges, buildings). The A to Z9

coding enables one to cope with

projects with up to 260 lots using

only 2 characters.

When reporting by CWBS is not a

client’s requirement and would

unnecessarily multiply the

number of Work Packages, a

simpler CWBS may be chosen.

Missions

The different

missions that SYSTRA

carries out can be

sorted using 1 of 4

mission codes.

Combining the

mission with the

project phase and

the object of the

mission permits the

EDMS TREE STRUCTURE

The WBS enables the identification of the Work

packages and their activity codes

The Production Works Packages generate the folders

inside the Production Folder

The project manager finds the project’s segmentation

within the EDMS

Production teams working on a document for a Work

Package know where to file their documents: in the

Work Package folder that has the same number as

their imputation code (activity code)

The structure within the WP corresponds to the level 3

PBS and the segmentation required by the trade

Documents are automatically tagged by placing them

in a particular Work Package (contractual

lot/Mission/Phase/Object)

Documents can be viewed in any order

A Work Package has a

unique meaningful

activity code in SPOTThe number of work

packages depends on

the size of the project

Work Package Owners and Project Managers

can monitor production’s progress

People in charge of entities can sort data by

Mission/Phase/Object for all the projects of

the entities concerned

People in charge of a product line can sort

data by Mission/Phase/Object for all the

projects of the products concerned
