SPEAKERS

SPECIAL GUEST

MICHAEL NUTTER, MAYOR, PHILADELPHIA

Recently re-elected to his second term as Mayor of his hometown, Michael A. Nutter has set an aggressive agenda for America’s fifth largest city – devising the City’s innovative school reform strategy, vowing to strengthen community policing through Philly Rising, a unique partnership between vulnerable neighborhoods and the City, and continuing to

implement the nationally recognized GreenWorks Philadelphia initiative that is helping to make the City of Philadelphia become the greenest city in America.

Since taking office in January 2008, Michael Nutter has vigorously managed city government through the worst recession since the Great Depression by maintaining core services and reducing the City’s spending – most notably closing a $2.4 billion gap in Philadelphia’s five year plan without compromising a single police officer, fire fighter, sanitation, or health center worker.

Born in Philadelphia and educated at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Michael Nutter has been committed to public service since his youth in West Philadelphia. He served almost 15 years on the Philadelphia City Council, earning the reputation of a reformer, before his election as Mayor of Philadelphia. He is happily married to his wife Lisa, and a proud parent to Christian and Olivia.

Each day we publish a short, entertaining email on companies, people, and products from the startup space. After the email gets sent, we exchange high fives and slough off the rest of the day, probably going to the horsetrack. (That’s not true, actually – the sloughing off at the horsetrack part – it’s right back to work on the next day’s issue.)

We tell the stories of a community while serving as a discovery guide for new companies, new products, events, and extraordinary jobs. Our readers are both those in startup space those seeking to gain insights from it. All of our emails have actionable items – stuff you can do, try, or go to. (If you see one that doesn’t, please tell us immediately and we’ll fire ourselves.)

We also hold events. Some are on campus, some are just around town, and we also partner with the biggest traveling startup job fair party in showbiz, UNCUBED.

We’re here to help build the community. It comes down to the fact that we want people to go for it – to find a fulfilling path in life and to connect with the companies, people and opportunities that can help – and we think our content and events can help.

The inspiration behind it came from our growing frustration with the unhealthy obsession with daily deals (you know, those Groupons). We realized that the Internet could enable a whole new way for local businesses and customers to communicate with each other, but wanted to build something sustainable and longer-term. And we set about building what we believe to be a fun, easy to use.

We’re all connected by our health experiences — when we get sick, when we’re injured, or when we care for a loved one. Now what if you could tap into each other’s experiences and difficulties? What if you could learn what a procedure would be like before you went through it? Or if you could best know what product to buy from people who’ve been there? What if by sharing your experience and a small amount of advice, you could prevent millions of other people from going through the struggles you did.
