DEVNAR Founder ChairmanDr. A. Saibaba Goud and theCorrespondent Mrs. A. Jyothi Goudreceiving accoladesfrom top dignitories
‘DEVNAR’ is a combination of two
words DEV (God) and NAR (Man),
highlighting the fact that there is God
in every man. If the entire humanity is
the family of God, the visually
challenged children are special
members in it. And so, they should be
given every possible opportunity to
develop their potentialities and latent
talents.
Devnar Foundation tries to unleash the
incredible capacity of students by giving
them value-based education and
enabling them to realize that within
them can be found the skill, knowledge
DevnarFoundationfor the Blind -Scaling new hights
and motivation to make something special happen.
The avowed objective of Devnar Foundation for
the Blind is to provide opportunities for the visually
challenged children in India on international
standards so that they can be absorbed in the
mainstream of society as socially productive
individuals. In Devnar School, education, boarding
and lodging are absolutely free and any Visually
Challenged child is admitted during any part of
the year.
Devnar Foundation started the school on 10-7-
1992 with four students in a rented house. Within
a span of 18 years, the school has grown to the
present stature with 400 students, housed in a three
storeyed building owned by the Foundation. This
phenomenal growth is due to the undoubted ability
and unflinching enthusiasm of the founder Dr. A.
Saibaba Goud, and his wife Mrs. Jyothi, the
dedicated staff, many philanthropists and donors.
There is a steady influx of visitors to the school.
Politicians and pressmen, beauty queens and
bureaucrats, scientists and sportsmen,
philanthropists and film stars come and meet the
students. Some of them struggle to keep back the
tears at first, but after interacting with them, it is
not tears of pity they shed, but tears of admiration.
“An institution is the lengthened shadow of one
man,” said Dr. Emerson. True to this philosophy,
the visionary behind Devnar Foundation is Dr. A.
Saibaba Goud. He is a crusader against ‘darkness’
Devnar Foundation for theBlind provides all that is
necessary to bring out thebest in the students. Their
abilities outshine thedisability to such an extentthat the visitors leave theschool humbled by theunconquerable spirit,
perseverance andperformance of the
students.

from Her Excellency Smt. Pratiba Patil, President of India - 2009
Mrs. A. Jyothi Goud, true to her name,
is really the light of the institution,
dispelling darkness by her gracious
presence and ever vigilant care. She is
dynamic and resourceful and her best
efforts are spontaneously given to
improve every aspect of the Institute.
She is a loving and compassionate
mother to the students and the guiding
force behind the organization. Her
unlimited enthusiasm in making the
children excel in dance and music is
remarkable and praiseworthy. She is
the fulcrum of the institute.
In 1992, she fully shared Dr. Goud’s
enthusiasm for launching the Devnar
Foundation for the Blind, though her
own children were small at that time.
Now, eighteen years later, she realizes
OurCorrespondent
with joy that she is destined to be a mother not only
to her own children but also to hundreds of children
who study and go out of Devnar School.
She is a life member of Indian Red Cross Society,
AP Branch, National Association for the Blind, and
All India Women’s Conference.

STAFF
In the life of an institution, the importance of
teamwork and interdependence cannot be
underestimated. The Visually Challenged Children
have special needs and hence the teachers have
multifaceted responsibilities and roles. This calls for
a dynamic approach and a constant renewal of
skills.
Devnar School has an experienced Principal, Mrs.
Lily Egbert, who sets the pace for academic
excellence in the school; a Headmaster, Mr. K.
Srinivas Reddy, who co-ordinates all educational
programmes conducted here and also about 35
teaching staff who give unstinted support to all
curricular and co-curricular activities. Most of the
teachers are specially trained to teach the Visually
Challenged students and the parent-teachers
bring in a depth of understanding to the
teaching process. Highly qualified
educationists and professionals, who do
voluntary service, enhance the learning
experience of the students.
The administrative and non-teaching staff see
to the efficient functioning of the institution.
The resident wardens take care of the needs
of the students and the supporting staff
maintains the cleanliness of the premises.
Every year two volunteers sponsored by an
organisation called Project Trust Centre from
U.K and teach our students for a period of
one year staying on the school premises.
Besides these volunteers, we have had
volunteers from Germany, Denmark, USA
and Australia. The cultural exchange is
beneficial for our students.

A class-wise syllabus has beenprepared. We are training the childrento operate the system using KEYBOARDwith the help of special software.
Software for Visually challenged are:
Jaws
Job Access With Speech is a screenreading software and, in short, it iscalled JAWS. This software is speciallydeveloped for the visually challenged. It is based on Microsoft Windowsoperating system and useful for manyMicrosoft software products. JAWSbasically converts the normal computerinto a talking computer, thus enablingthe blind person to work on computerindependently. We use JAWS to teach
Activities different applications in Microsoft Office, differentlanguages like C, C++, Java, etc and to accessInternet like browsing, creating E-mail ID, sendingmails, opening the Emails etc.
It can make visually challenged person comfortableto use Microsoft Office and other software products. The visually challenged person can install JAWS ifhe or she so desires.
Kurzweil
Kurzweil is a software used for reading printed text.A scanner is used to scan the printed text. TheKurzweil software commands the local scanner, connected to the computer, to scan the printedmatter and to obtain the image of the text page. The scanned image is in the form of photograph ofthe text page. This photographic text is thenconverted to actual characters by OCR (OpticalCharacter Recognition) software incorporated inKurzweil monitor screen. Screen reader transformsthe text on monitor screen to voice. In this way thevisually challenged person can listen to the printedtext interpreted by screen reading software.
Magic
Magic is the software used by a person with lowvision. Here the text is magnified so that a personwith low vision can see the text on the screen withthe help of this software. The person can use mouseas he can see the magnified image of cursor onthe monitor screen. MAGIC has screen readeroption also. Therefore, in addition to seeing theenlarged text, a person can hear what he sees.Enhances the learning abilities of the partiallysighted children who use the zoom text on themonitor.
Prisma Magnifier
Prisma is a teaching aid, which magnifies thetext and diagram on the monitor of theComputer or TV, and it can be adjusted tothe comfort level of children with low vision.

To get over this difficulty,Devnar Science Lab has more than 50 tactilemodels ingeniously designed and preparedby the Biology teacher, Mr. Egbert Dawson.
The students are able to score more than 95%in science with the help of these assistivedevices and the exhibit “fractional distillationof petroleum” won a silver medal in the 93rdNational Science Congress.
