In 2004, Broward County Library’s website, www.broward.org/library, offered a link to its online catalog and a variety of links to other outside sites. Traffic was minimal, with a high of only 30,000 electronic visits and just 50,000 web pages viewed on a monthly basis. With most consumers in South Florida being Internet savvy and all library locations offering use of computers with free Internet access, this level of traffic was statistically low for such a large library system. A new plan to transition the website began. “The goal of our website was to be customer-driven. We wanted to exceed customer expectations of a website by constantly adding new features and marketing through new technology while providing online services that everyone could use,” said Maria Gebhardt, Marketing Manager. “When I started, very few people could see the potential for the library’s website.” A new website with a more colorful layout and additional features was launched and traffic began increasing almost immediately. Marketing efforts through the library locations and in the library’s monthly magazine encouraged people to use the site. The new site offered a new, dynamic design to promote future programs and events. More links to actual library program information and library resources were added as well as branch profiles. In November 2004, an electronic newsletter was introduced. The E-Newsletter began with just basic text and a few links. Subscribers to the E-Newsletter began steadily increasing and the E-Newsletter started taking on a vital role of informing customers about new programs, events and services each month. “Subscribers signed-up faster than we could believe,” mentioned Gebhardt.

The chart to the left, shows the increase of E-Newsetter Subscribers.

The E-Newsletter, which currently has more than 5,000 subscribers, has also won several national awards including accolades from PR News, a National Association of Government Communicators Award and a prestigious MarCom Creative Award in 2006. The website was also winning awards and traffic was steadily increasing. In 2007, almost 700,000 web pages are viewed each month by a quarter million electronic visitors.

The library’s online magazine, Bookings, has also achieved significant growth. In 2004, the online magazine was downloaded on average 2,000 times per month. In April 2006, for the first time ever, downloads of the .pdf version reached 28,776, exceeding the print version of 26,000. Traffic continued to increase, with more than 30,000 copies downloaded in June 2006. A variety of technological advancements have made Broward County Library’s website popular among its users and prominent within the industry. In January 2006, Broward County Library added video, produced fully in-house, to its website. Web commercials were also added to promote events such as the first Anime Convention and Blues School 2007. A special initiative was undertaken for Broward County Library’s African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Premiering its incredible Special Collections, the website was able tell the story of the collections while giving customers a personal view of priceless items such as Alex Haley’s original manuscripts and Esther Rolle’s Emmy Award. The Special Collections web presence attained top search engine rankings on Google, Yahoo and MSN and gained national attention with articles in The New York Times, Jet Magazine and American Libraries. “Broward County Library was able to utilize maximum exposure for these collections by leveraging a targeted online media plan,” explained Gebhardt. Additional online services such as Downloadable Features offer printable certificates in different languages and step-by-step origami instructions. “Broward County Library’s website has developed into an essential online tool for our customers,” said Library Director Robert E. Cannon. “Over the next few years, it will continue to grow and showcase the exceptional services, programs, events and classes at Broward County Library.”

Blues School 2007 was the first web commercial the library produced fully in-house.
