ABOUT THE INSTITUTE LIBRARY

he Institute Library was a center of liter-ary culture, adult education, and civil

discourse in New Haven for much of the 19th century, serving for many years as the largest circulating library in the city and as the site of popular lecture series that attracted such notable speakers as Henry Ward Beecher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Dickens, and Frederick Douglass. The Library has occupied its present home at 847 Chapel Street since 1878, and is one of the last remaining libraries of its kind in North America.

Today, the Library is in the midst of a remark-able renaissance. The staff, board of directors, and dedicated volunteers have created read-ers’ and writer’s groups, special lecture series, youth poetry programming, panel discussions and presentations, and a gallery showcasing the work of local artists. The Institute Library proudly opens its doors to all visitors with regular community programming and events. The Institute Library is “living history”; your support will keep it a place for civil discourse and lifelong learning for generations to come.

Thank you! g
