Success is connecting each person to their individual and unique talents

and teaching each person to value and deploy such talents for their

highest and best good…. Success is establishing and achieving goals….

Success is being fully present in each moment…. Success is being

impeccable with your word, not taking things personally, not making

assumptions, and always doing your best…. Success is being in a place

of peace, joy, and happiness.

Success to me is:

• Knowing I am appreciated for my efforts

• Knowing that my contributions positively impact those around me

• Providing comfort and security to my family and friends

• Sleeping soundly knowing I’ve given my best effort each and every

day

I believe success is best demonstrated when all aspects of life are

in balance and progression is made within each aspect. The firm

provides opportunities to maintain a good work-life balance by

allowing flexible Fridays during the summer, providing a generous

amount of paid time off, and encouraging employees to join and

contribute to charitable organizations outside of the firm as a way

of giving back to the community. Within the firm, there are many

learning opportunities for both job related and personal growth.

The wellness meetings contribute to individuals’ well-being, while

continuing education provides for growth within the discipline.

Success to me is being able to achieve the goals that I have set out

to accomplish in life that make me happy. Being able to provide for

my family and knowing that we are happy also plays a role in

achieving my definition of personal success.

During my entire adult life, when I have thought about success, my

mind has always gone to a particular passage in the Bible (see

prior page). For 35 years, Ennis Pellum CPAs has afforded me with

the opportunity to pursue success while remaining true to my

beliefs. I am thankful for the daily opportunity to serve clients,

team members and others, while providing the means of income

to sustain a satisfying lifestyle for my family. I am committed to the

success of our clients, our people and our community, and while

we strive to enable others to pursue their own definition of

success, I hope others see our road as a good road and dare to

follow.

Personal success to me means being respected by my peers and being

known for my integrity. For over 35 years, the firm has established its

reputation as a respected accounting firm through the company’s

commitment to its clients, its people, and its community. It has earned the

respect of the community through its recognition of various awards such

as Best Accounting Firms to Work For and Companies with Heart. As a

member of the firm for over a year and a half now, I feel proud to be a part

of such a respected company.

Personal success is ultimately feeling good about the way you

carry yourself at your job and with others. Keeping a balance

between family and work and feeling that you have made a

difference. I have always tried to do the right thing and treat

people fairly personally and with business encounters.

Success is being able to use my abilities for my personal growth and

the firm’s growth and feeling the accomplishment of a job well done.

The firm encourages self-improvement and continuing education,

which increases success. The staff at the firm is truly a ‘team’;

everyone shares information and is willing to lend their assistance

with any project/ assignment/engagement.

Success for me is being taught a new responsibility and then taking

personal responsibility for that job from start to finish with little to no

supervision. Learning it inside and out. What really makes it a success to

me is when others come to you for assistance or to help resolve a

problem or figure out how to correct a mistake, in essence becoming the

go to person for that particular project, niche, department, etc.

— Bob Ennis (founded firm in 1978)

Looking back at a life-long career as a CPA and the founder of Ennis

Pellum CPAs, my reflections on the success I’ve enjoyed are as

follows: Working hard, taking care of clients and hiring great and

dedicated personnel (thank you Ron, Anna, Dwin and support staff)

was my personal road to success. Ray Hilliard and I didn’t set out by

defining big goals for the firm; instead, we were determined to build a

great firm which looked after its clients. By doing just that, the firm

grew and became successful. Having a spouse who supported me

and who I could rely on throughout my career to take care of our

children was incredibly important. I was also willing to make sacrifices

to focus on important things such as setting money aside for

education, retirement and other things that have provided my family

and I with opportunities and enjoyment throughout my life.

“ For me personal success means being a good Husband & Father

before all other things. A major part of accomplishing both is to be a

good provider. There is give and take in all things and our profession

requires certain sacrifices various times throughout the year. The firm

helps me accomplish my goals in two ways. First, I am compensated

for my additional work hours during busy season which helps put

some money aside for things I would not otherwise be able to provide

for my family. The second is the flexibility we have outside of busy

season. While I do have limited family time during season, I have the

ability to be more involved the rest of the year when compared to

having a traditional 9-5 job. As long as the firm continues to foster this

type of flexibility and a "family first" environment, while continuing to

help me grow professionally, I couldn't ask for anything else.

In the short term, success is knowing at the end of each day I was my

best self. I did all I could to the best of my ability, I was a good and kind

person, and I met the needs of my family. In the long term, success is

finding your niche, what you’re good at, what you’re passionate about.

For some, this is realized early in life. Others will need to search and

discover it as they move through life. Working at Ennis, Pellum, I feel I

have the freedom to find my niche. I am supplied with various

opportunities to try new things and work on different projects. I have the

necessary support from management, as well as their guidance when I

feel I need it.

Success means so many different things to me… Success is a pair of

smelly running shoes in the back of the car stinking up the car,

because that means that I was able to get out and get some exercise

in. Success is laughing and crying with your friends or family, because I

have built a strong relationship with them. Success is taking a

vacation/trip with my friends or family, because I am part of team of

people who I trust to take care of business in my absence. Success

means buying that new car, because I saved my money or I have the

credit to make the purchase. Success is having a tasty meal at

mealtime everyday whether I purchased, someone prepared, or I

prepared it myself. Success is a peaceful sleep at night, because I

have met the day’s choices with the desired results. Success is the

comfort of a safe place to hang my hat so it isn’t lost the next time I

want to wear it. Success means all the small things that make up the

day to day items that give me a sense of purpose through the day.

Success to me is the ability, means, and desire to do the things I love

with the people I love.

Success in my life, in my career, in my family or any kind of endeavor

is, in the long-run, the responsibility of me as an individual. Only I can

define what success means to me. My success includes work/life

balance, fulfillment, education, fun, growth, and the satisfaction of

being of service to others. Although success is defined by me, my

personal and professional environment plays a big role in my ability to

be able to achieve my goals. I’m happier and more successful at my

work and in my personal life because of the support and

encouragement I have received over the years. ”

Success is being able to live in integrity with myself and having the

freedom to pursue my goals and interests. Success is having the ability to

make adjustments along the way when I realize that I would like to go in a

different direction, when life throws me a curveball, or when my family

requires my presence to take care of them. Success is working with a firm

which focuses on my strengths and interests first and one which gives me

the resources, support and mentoring to develop to my fullest potential.

Success is being proud of the team that I am a part of and knowing that

everyone is here for each other’s success and wellbeing. Success is being

happy with where I am right now and to have a sense of possibility and

joy for the future.

Success to me is being able to come to work every day and be

challenged. Daily challenges are exciting because that means I get to

learn something new. As long as I continue to learn and share my

experiences with others I’ll consider myself successful.

Celebrating Our Team Administrative Professionals’ Day (2013)

Page 61: Book of Success

To me, success is not a destination, but rather a path we travel

through life. In our early years the path is mostly about learning,

growing, achieving and building; learning the things that will enable us

to build solid and loving families, and networks of positive personal

and professional relationships, and achieving rewarding positions of

influence in business and community. As we travel further down our

path, success still involves learning and growing, but is less about

achieving and building and more about sharing – sharing of

knowledge, experience, and the fruits of our earlier successes to

enrich the lives of others as they travel along their own paths of

success. If we travel our path with faith and optimism, and with a

balance of responsibility and enjoyment, our path will be one of great

success.

The culture at Ennis, Pellum CPAs allows us to have freedom of

growth and freedom of expression. Each of those splinter off into a

multitude of positive gains I receive from working at the firm. That, in

and of itself, is successful. I’ve found a place I can thrive, be myself,

enjoy my work and who I work with, where there is no limit to what I

can achieve. Living life with a “without limits” philosophy requires the

people and places that you’re associated with to have similar

philosophies.

One aspect of success and which I admire about Ennis Pellum CPAs is

the firm’s encouragement to always keep learning and making

ourselves better human beings, whether it is by reading, continuing

education, community involvement, or networking etc. Through all of

this, we each benefit personally and all have a share in making Ennis

Pellum CPAs a great place to work and a place in which to make our

own definition of success happen.
