THE ONE IN A MILLION BOYMonica WoodMiss Ona Vitkus has, aside from three months in the summer of 1914, lived unobtrusively, her secrets fiercely protected. The boy, with his passion for world records, changes all that. He is eleven. She is one hundred and four years, one hundred and thirty three days old (they are counting). And he makes her feel like she might be really special after all. Better late than never... Only it’s been two weeks now since he last visited, and she’s starting to think he’s not so different from all the rest.

Then the boy’s father comes, for some reason determined to finish his son’s good deed. And Ona must show this new stranger that not only are there odd jobs to be done, but a life’s ambition to complete.

ABOUT THE AUTHORMonica Wood is an award-winning, bestselling novelist and memoirist. Born in Maine, New England, to an Irish Catholic family, she worked as a guidance counsellor and in a nursing home before becoming a full-time writer. She is also a singer, and travelled the New England circuit singing jazz, country, pop and gospel for many years. She lives in Maine with her husband.

April is the last month we are offering the link on our website to update your booknews subscription so you continue receiving it automatically in the mail each month. If you love this publication and would like to receive it regularly either via email or post, let us know by updating your details by clicking on the link on our website, sending us an email or letting us know in store. So far only 10% of our mailing list has completed the task... so we really are trying to get the message across to our fans this month.

You will notice this month that we have marked many items with an asterix after the title. This reflects a change by publishers to now have 2 new release dates each month - one at the beginning and one mid month. The asterix indicates a mid month release. From next month we will push back the mid month releases to our next catalogue to ensure customers are not disappointed that books aren’t in stock at the start of the month as has usually been the case.

A reminder this month that Robinsons stocks a good range of ABC products. Now that ABC stores have closed, you can get your ABC fix at Robinsons.

We would like to thank authors attending our stores last month. Both Jacqueline Harvey and Tristan Bancks visited Highpoint and Northland stores. A big thank you to them!

Finally, we encourage you to get in early for Mother’s Day which falls on May 8th. We have lots of things to choose from. Why not spoil mum this year with a relaxing read, some armchair travel or a Blind Date with a Book!

THE SPECIAL ONESEm BaileyEsther is Special. Along with three other teenagers, she lives on an isolated farm, safe from the evils of the outside world. They are totally self-sufficient, protected... and trapped. He is in control, always watching, vigilant for signs that his Special Ones don’t make mistakes, don’t need ‘renewal’. It’s happened before. Esther used to believe it all. But now she knows- it’s all a lie. She

needs to get out before he realises. Em Bailey writes with a beautiful restraint to create a slow but intense burn of tension, bringing life in a cult to life in a delightfully creepy way. Slow hints are dropped along the way that build into an unforgettable climax. The story flows and builds so well it’s incredibly easy to read in very few sittings, and the twists will have you gasping aloud. The Special Ones is unlike any young adult fiction I’ve encountered before; moments of extreme emotion transition smoothly into detailed character studies, longing memories, or an insight into our modern society. Combining suspense, horror, romance, action and themes of family and belonging, it has something for everyone. Sophie

LADY MIDNIGHTCassandra ClareCassandra Clare returns with a new series in her Shadowhunters world with Lady Midnight. Set five years after the conclusion of the Mortal Instruments series, Lady Midnight is book one in The Dark Artifices, a new trilogy for the Shadowhunters of Los Angeles. Emma Castairs and the Blackthorn children have grown since we last saw

them during the Dark War in City of Heavenly Fire. Emma is the heroine of this series, and we follow her as her world is turned upside down. A string of murders around the city provides new clues to solving the murder of her parents and the Blackthorn’s estranged half-brother is returned to them from The Wild Hunt. Emma and Julian struggle as they navigate life as parabatai (platonic soulmates in battle, and life). Once again I was pulled back into the exciting world of Shadowhunters, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and fey. While it is possible to read the book as a stand-alone (important details are explained), reading at least The Mortal Instrument series would enhance your enjoyment of the book. This book was an entertaining read, and long-time lovers of the series will not be disappointed. I am intrigued as to what will happen next. Claire

THE SUMMER BEFORE THE WARHelen SimonsonOn the eve of WWI, with the death of her scholar father, Beatrice Nash must find her way in the world, and accepts a position as Latin teacher in Rye, England. Used to travelling across Europe and staying in top-notch hotels, she is reduced to three pairs of gloves, a shabby room, and one hot bath weekly. To keep her position she must

battle prejudice and long held class snobbery. Beatrice is intelligent and highly educated and underestimated by most. In the style of Austen, true love grows between friends who are perfect equals. War breaks out bringing many challenges to Rye and it’s inhabitants. As an Austen fan it was a delight to get swept up in this novel of social manners. Sue

YELLOWMegan JacobsonA confronting look at teenage life in nineties Australia, as told by Kirra who is dealing with an alcoholic mother, a father who is too-laid back to get involved, “friends” who would rather make fun of the way she walks than stick up for her, and teachers who know she’s intelligent and want her to work harder to make something of herself. To top it

all off there’s a ghost haunting a pay phone who wants her help. But beyond the hardship and torment, this is a book with so much heart, and such uplifting hope that it’s impossible not to emerge with a goofy smile on your face. It’s a game of “spot the Aussie thing”, a nostalgic ride for those of us who lived it. Stephanie

AT THE EDGE OF THE ORCHARDTracy ChevalierThis book was fierce and beautifully crafted. The Goodenough family lives a hard and brittle life in the stagnant swamps of Northwest Ohio. Each day is a struggle against the swamp and each other. James and Sadie Goodenough are raw and aggressive... both pushing buttons because it makes life more interesting on

the brutal frontier. James loves sweet apples that remind him of life before the swamp whilst Sadie loves spitters used to make Applejack her alcoholic refuge from the brutality of life in the swamp. These competing desires prove to be the undoing of the Goodenough family... with the youngest son Robert left to pick up the pieces. This is a story about how people can endure daily struggles and harsh circumstances. It punched me in the face. Sue

WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIRPaul KalanithiDr. Paul Kalanithi is in the prime of his life and career when he is diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. A lifetime lover of literature and philosophy, this book is his final offering to the world. Part memoir, part musing on the meaning of life; Kalanithi chronicles his path as he faces death while still living life to the fullest. He forges

a new and stronger bond with his wife, they have a child, he continues to operate as long as possible, he begins his other life dream of starting to write a book about his struggles and he continues his quest to understand the meaning of life and death. It’s deeply thoughtful, beautifully written, and poignant without ever being despairing. The afterward, written by his wife describing his final days, is equally significant. His end was heroic. I can’t recommend this book enough. Vicki

THE TIGER AND THE WOLFAdrian TchaikovskyBehind this magical cover lies the story of Maniye, the child of 2 souls. Born of a strategic union between powerful members of both the Wolf and Tiger clans, Maniye struggles to find balance and a place in the world to call her own. After escaping years of torment at the hands of the Wolf clan, and the detached ambitions

of her father, Maniye ventures into the Crown of the World. In this land, where humans can ‘step’ into their clan animal form, Maniye finds herself torn between more than just the two warring souls within her. She’ll have to draw on elements from both her Wolf and Tiger forms, in an attempt to survive long enough to discover her own destiny. For fantasy fans who want something to really sink their teeth into! Hannah

ELEANORJason GurleyEleanor is fourteen years old when it happens for the first time... when she walks through an ordinary door at school and finds herself in another world. It happens again and again, and her disappearances last for longer and longer, but she can’t explain where she goes. She can’t properly put into words the otherness of the rift, and the

way the beings there talk to her in flashes of light and song, or how when she’s there she ceases to have a physical form. At its heart, Eleanor is an engaging, beautiful work of speculative literature, and I would recommend it for the writing alone. But beyond that, this is a story that feels so incredibly human, while at the same time exploring beyond any borders that we, mere humans, are able to fathom. Stephanie
