BOOK EXPO AMERICA 2010GLOBAL MARKET FORUM SPANISH PUBLISHING

La presente edición del más importante acontecimiento

editorial de Estados Unidos, la Book Expo America,

que se celebra en la ciudad de Nueva York, está

dedicada a la edición española. Los responsables de

BEA, de forma muy oportuna, propusieron al Ministerio

de Cultura organizar un programa cultural, paralelo a

la Feria, junto con instituciones culturales de la ciudad.

Esta iniciativa en torno a la industria editorial y a

la literatura españolas constituye un esfuerzo de

colaboración entre los organizadores de la Feria, el

Ministerio de Cultura de España, el Instituto de Comercio

Exterior de España, la Federación de Gremios de

Editores de España, el Instituto Cervantes de Nueva

York, el Consulado General de España en Nueva York

y diversas editoriales españolas y americanas.

Gracias a esta colaboración se ha podido programar,

además de una jornada profesional con interesantes

propuestas y foros de discusión en torno al tema

del libro español en Estados Unidos, que tendrá lugar

el día 25 en la propia Feria, un programa cultural que

se llevará a cabo en diferentes instituciones de la

ciudad de Nueva York: el Instituto Cervantes de

Nueva York, la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York, The

Graduate Center-CUNY, el Princeton Club de Nueva

York, la Librería McNally, y el Nuyorican Poets Café.

En estas sedes hemos programado una serie de

actividades literarias con los siete autores invitados por

el Ministerio de Cultura de España: Fernando Savater,

Eduardo Mendoza, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Elvira Lindo,

Ana Merino, Juan Gómez-Jurado e Isabel Cadenas

Cañón. Autores prestigiosos y con una larga trayectoria

a sus espaldas junto a otros, jóvenes y brillantes, que

tienen por delante una prometedora carrera literaria.

Su producción abarca la novela, el ensayo, la poesía

y la literatura infantil y juvenil: se puede considerar

una buena muestra de la calidad de lo que se escribe

y se edita ahora mismo en España.

Desde España, deseamos que este amplio programa

despierte el interés del público y del mundo del libro

americano por nuestra literatura; confiamos en que

este interés se refleje en un incremento del número de

traducciones de autores españoles y de la distribución

de libros en español en este país.

The present edition of the most important publishing

event in the United States, the Book Expo America held

in the city of New York, is devoted to publications in

Spain. The persons responsible for the BEA submitted a

very timely proposal to the Spanish Ministry of Culture

for the organization of a cultural program to run parallel

to the BEA, alongside the city’s cultural icons.

This initiative involving the publishing industry and

the literati of Spain represents a collaborative effort

between the Fair’s organizers, the Spanish Ministry of

Culture, the Foreign Trade Institute of Spain (ICEX),

the Spanish Fedeation of Publishing Guilds, the

Instituto Cervantes New York, the Consulate General

of Spain in New York and a number of Spanish and

American publishing houses.

The fruit of this collaboration has been, in addition

to the professional seminar with interesting proposals

and discussion fora on the subject of books in Spanish

in the United States, scheduled for the 25th as

part of the Fair proper, the organization of a cultural

program that will take place in different institutions

across the city of New York: the Instituto Cervantes

New York, the New York Public Library, The Graduate

Center-CUNY, the Princeton Club of New York,

McNally’s Bookstore and the Nuyorican Poets Café.

At these different venues, we have arranged a series of

literary activities with the seven authors invited by the

Spanish Ministry of Culture: Fernando Savater, Eduardo

Mendoza, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Elvira Lindo, Ana

Merino, Juan Gómez-Jurado and Isabel Cadenas Cañón.

Renowned authors with a long history behind them

alongside other brilliant young writers with a promising

literary career ahead of them. Their production ranges

from novels and essays to poetry and literature for

children and teenagers: the selection can be considered

a good cross-section of the quality of what is being

written and published in Spain today.

From Spain, we are hopeful that this extensive program

will arouse the interest of the general public and the

American book world in our literature; we are confident

that this interest will be reflected in an increase in

the number of translations of Spanish authors and the

distribution of books in Spanish in this country.

Es licenciada en filología hispánica. Realizó un máster en

artes escénicas en París, donde fue lectora de español;

amplió sus estudios doctorales en San Diego, California,

y trabajó como gestora cultural en Buenos Aires.

Su primer libro, Irse (Vitruvio, 2010), fue el ganador

del III Certamen para jóvenes poetas Fundación Siglo

Futuro-Caja de Guadalajara y en la actualidad es uno

los diez libros de poesía más vendidos de España.

Ha traducido al euskera Los boteros de la noche, de

Raúl Zurita, y al castellano el poemario de C.D. Wright

Rising, Falling, Hoovering (en colaboración con la

poeta mexicana Valerie Mejer) y Le prix de la verité,

del filósofo Marcel Hénaff.

Escribe una tesis doctoral sobre la relación entre

teatro e identidad nacional. Es bloguera, fotógrafa

e Insigne Vaivodesa del Longevo Instituto de Altos

Estudios Patafísicos de Buenos Aires (LIAEPBA).

Vive en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Nunca ha ido a Granada.

She holds a B.A. in Spanish and she pursued an M.A.

in Performing Arts in Paris, where she also worked as a

Spanish teaching assistant; she has conducted doctoral

research in San Diego, California, and she has worked

as an arts administrator in Buenos Aires.

Her first book, Irse (Vitruvio, 2010), won the III

Fundación Siglo Futuro-Caja de Guadalajara award

for young poets. It is one of the ten top-selling poetry

books in Spain. She has translated Raúl Zurita’s Los boteros de la noche into Basque, and C. D. Wright’s

Rising, Falling, Hoovering (in collaboration with

Mexican poet Valerie Mejer) and philosopher Marcel

Hénaff’s Le prix de la vérité into Spanish.

She is currently writing a doctoral dissertation on

the relationship between theater and national identity.

Besides being a blogger and a photographer, she

holds the title of Distinguished Vaivodess of the

Longevo Instituto de Altos Estudios Patafísicos de

Buenos Aires (LIAEPBA).

She lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has never been

to Granada.

Escritor y periodista, ha pasado por las redacciones

de Radio España, Canal+, ABC, Cadena SER y la

Cadena Cope. Ha ganado diversos premios literarios

por sus relatos y novelas, el más importante de

ellos el VII Premio Internacional de Novela Ciudad

de Torrevieja 2008 por El emblema del traidor, publicada por Plaza & Janés (ya a la venta en

bolsillo), con el que Juan celebra este 2010 haber

alcanzado la cifra de tres millones de lectores en

todo el mundo.

Tras el éxito internacional de su primera novela, Espía de Dios (publicada en 42 países a día de hoy), Juan

se ha convertido en el autor español más internacional

junto a Javier Sierra y Carlos Ruiz Zafón, además de

ver cumplido el sueño de su vida: dedicarse de lleno

a contar historias. La publicación de Contrato con Dios

supuso su confirmación (hasta ahora publicada en

más de 35 países y contando). Para no dejar de lado

su pasión por el periodismo, continúa escribiendo

reportajes y una columna de opinión semanal en

La Voz de Galicia. Fruto de uno de estos reportajes

durante un viaje a EE.UU. surgió La Masacre de Virginia Tech, su hasta ahora único libro de no ficción,

que ha sido traducido también a varias lenguas.

Se ha traducido al inglés y publicado en Estados Unidos

Programa / Program

A writer and journalist, he has worked for ABC

newspaper, Canal+ television and the Radio España,

Cadena SER and Cadena Cope radio stations. He

has been awarded several literary prizes for his short

stories and novels, the most important of these being

the 7th Torrevieja City International Novel Prize in

2008 for El emblema del traidor, published by Plaza

& Janés (now available in paperback), with which

Juan is now celebrating in 2010 the figure of three

million readers worldwide.

After the international success of his first novel, Espía de Dios (published in 42 countries to date), he has

become one of Spain’s most feted authors alongside

Javier Sierra and Carlos Ruiz Zafón, as well as

achieving his life’s dream: spending all his time telling

stories. The launch of Contrato con Dios confirmed

his status (published so far in over 35 countries

and still counting). So as not to abandon his passion

for journalism completely, he still writes articles and

a weekly opinion column in the La Voz de Galicia

newspaper. One of his investigations as a reporter during

a trip to the US bore fruit as La Masacre de Virginia Tech,

his first and so far only work of non-fiction, which has

also been translated into several languages.

His novel God Spy (2008) has been translated into

English and published in the United States and his

Contrato con Dios will shortly be coming out as

The Moses Expedition.

Comenzó su actividad profesional en la radio siendo

muy joven, a los diecinueve años. En este medio ejerció

todas las tareas posibles, de locutora a reportera,

guionista o actriz. Más tarde, trabajó como guionista

en la televisión.

En 1992 abandona la radio y la televisión y escribe

su primer libro, Manolito Gafotas, al que le seguirían

seis de la misma serie. Al mismo tiempo, escribe

varios guiones para el cine en colaboración con el

director Miguel Albaladejo, como “La primera noche

de mi vida” o “El cielo abierto.”

Ha escrito tres novelas de adultos, El otro barrio (1998),

Algo más inesperado que la muerte (2002), y Una palabra tuya (2005). Esta última fue galardonada

con el premio Biblioteca Breve, y llevada al cine por

la directora Ángeles González-Sinde. Los artículos

que escribe semanalmente en el diario El País fueron

recopilados en los libros Tinto de verano I-III.

En estos momentos, escribe una novela y prepara

dos proyectos, uno para el cine y otro para el teatro.

Vive entre Madrid y Nueva York.

Se han traducido al inglés y publicado en EE.UU. los tres

primeros volúmenes de Manolito Gafotas (Manolito Four-Eyes) y está a punto de publicarse el cuarto.

Elvira started her professional activities in the world

of radio at a very early age, only nineteen. She has

done everything there is to do in this medium, from

presenter to reporter, scriptwriter or actress. She

later worked as a scriptwriter for television.

In 1992, she turned her back on radio and television

to write her first book, Manolito Gafotas, followed by

six more in the same series. At the same time, she

has written several film scripts in collaboration with

the director Miguel Albaladejo, such as “La primera

noche de mi vida” or “El cielo abierto.”

She has written three novels for adults, El otro barrio

(1998), Algo más inesperado que la muerte (2002),

and Una palabra tuya (2005). This last work won the

Biblioteca Breve prize and was filmed by the director

Ángeles González-Sinde. Her weekly columns in the

El País newspaper were compiled into the volumes

entitled Tinto de verano I–III.

She is currently working on a novel and is preparing

two more projects, one for the silver screen and the

other for the stage.

She lives between Madrid and New York.

The first three volumes of her stories about Manolito Gafotas (Manolito Four-Eyes) have been translated

into English and published in the United States and

the fourth volume is about to appear.

Tras licenciarse en Derecho por la Universidad de

Barcelona, estudió un año en Londres y volvió a

Barcelona para ejercer de abogado. Desde 1973 hasta

el 1982 residió en Nueva York, donde trabajó como

traductor simultáneo para la ONU.

En 1975 publicó su primera novela, La verdad sobre el caso Savolta, que recibió el prestigioso Premio

de la Crítica y fue traducida a más de 20 idiomas.

Otras novelas suyas son El misterio de la cripta embrujada (1979), El laberinto de las aceitunas (1982),

La ciudad de los prodigios (1986), La isla inaudita

(1989), Sin noticias de Gurb (1990), El año del diluvio

(1992), Una comedia ligera (1996), La aventura del tocador de señoras (2001), Mauricio o las elecciones primarias (2006), El asombroso viaje de Pomponio Flato (2008), Tres vidas de santos (2009).

Ha escrito también obras de teatro en castellano

y en catalán (Restauració), así como adaptaciones

(Panorama desde el puente de Arthur Miller y El sueño de una noche de verano de William Shakespeare).

Algunas obras suyas han sido llevadas al cine (La verdad sobre el caso Savolta, El misterio de la cripta embrujada y La ciudad de los prodigios). Ha traducido

a Edward Morgan Forster, William Shakespeare y Lord

Byron. Fue profesor en la Facultad de Traducción

e Interpretación de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra.

After graduating from the University of Barcelona with

a law degree, he spent a year studying in London and

returned to Barcelona to work as a lawyer. From 1973

to 1982, he lived in New York, where he worked as a

simultaneous interpreter for the UN.

In 1975, he published his first novel, La verdad sobre el caso Savolta, which received the prestigious Critics’

Prize and was translated into over 20 languages.

Other novels include El misterio de la cripta embrujada

(1979), El laberinto de las aceitunas (1982), La ciudad de los prodigios (1986), La isla inaudita (1989),

Sin noticias de Gurb (1990), El año del diluvio (1992),

Una comedia ligera (1996), La aventura del tocador de señoras (2001), Mauricio o las elecciones primarias

(2006), El asombroso viaje de Pomponio Flato (2008),

Tres vidas de santos (2009).

He has also written stage plays in Castilian and

Catalan Spanish (Restauració), as well as adaptations

(Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge and William

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Some

of his works have been filmed (La verdad sobre el caso Savolta, El misterio de la cripta embrujada

and La ciudad de los prodigios). He has published

translations of Edward Morgan Forster, William

Shakespeare and Lord Byron. He lectured at the School

of Translation and Interpretation in the Pompeu Fabra

University.

Ana Merino ha publicado seis poemarios: Preparativos para un viaje (ganador del Premio Adonais de 1994),

Los días gemelos (1997), La voz de los relojes (2000),

Juegos de niños (ganador del Premio Fray Luis de

León 2003), Compañera de celda (2006) (traducido

al inglés y publicado por Harbor Mountain Press

2007), y Hagamos caso al tigre (2010). Es también

autora de la novela juvenil El hombre de los dos corazones (2009).

Una antología de su poesía ha aparecido traducida al

alemán por teamart Verlag Zurich, 2009. Sus poemas

han aparecido en más de veinte colecciones, algunos

de ellos traducidos al portugués, esloveno, francés,

neerlandés, búlgaro o italiano.

Merino también escribe crítica sobre cómics y novela

gráfica, representaciones testimoniales y teorías de

la infancia marginal.

Ha ganado el premio Diario de Avisos por sus artículos

breves sobre cómic para la revista literaria Leer.

Merino es profesora titular de escritura creativa en la

Universidad de Iowa, es miembro del comité ejecutivo

del International Comic Art Forum (ICAF) y de la Junta

Directiva del Center for Cartoon Studies.

Ha comisariado tres exposiciones de cómics.

Ana Merino has published six books of poetry:

Compañera de celda, translated into English as Cell Mate (Harbor Mountain Press, 2007) and Hagamos caso al tigre. An anthology of her poetry has been

translated into German and published by teamart

Verlag Zurich, 2009. She is also the author of a youth

novel “El hombre de los dos corazones” (2009).

Her poems have been included in more than twenty

collections, some of them translated into Portuguese,

Slovenian, French, Dutch, Bulgarian or Italian.

Merino also writes about Comics and Graphic Novels

Criticism, Testimonial Representations and theories

of Childhood Poverty and Marginality.

She won the Diario de Avisos Award for best critical

short articles about comics for the Spanish literary

magazine Leer.

Merino is an Associate Professor of Spanish Creative

Writing at the University of Iowa; she is also a member

of the executive committee for the International

Comics Art Forum (ICAF) and a Director Board for

the Center for Cartoon Studies.

She has been curator of three comic exhibitions.

Cursó estudios de periodismo en Madrid y se licenció

en Historia del arte en la Universidad de Granada.

Es autor del ensayo Córdoba de los Omeyas (1991) y

ha reunido sus artículos en seis volúmenes Su labor

como articulista ha sido reconocida con los premios

González Ruano de Periodismo y Mariano de Cavia,

ambos en 2003. Su obra narrativa comprende: Beatus Ille (1986), Premio Ícaro, El invierno en Lisboa (1987),

Premio de la Crítica y el Premio Nacional de Literatura,

ambos en 1988, Beltenebros (1989), El jinete polaco

(1991), Premio Planeta y Premio Nacional de Literatura

en 1992, Los misterios de Madrid (1992), El dueño del secreto (1994), Nada del otro mundo (1994), Ardor guerrero (1995), Plenilunio (1997), Carlota Fainberg

(2000), Sefarad (2001), En ausencia de Blanca (2001),

Ventanas de Manhattan (2004), El viento de la Luna

(2006) y La noche de los tiempos (2009).

Ha sido Director del Instituto Cervantes de Nueva

York durante dos años (2004-2006). Desde 1995 es

Antonio Muñoz Molina

Úbeda (Jaén), 1956

He studied journalism in Madrid and took a degree

in Art History at the University of Granada. He is the

author of the essay Córdoba de los Omeyas (1991);

his articles are collected in six volumes. His activities

as a columnist were rewarded in 2003 with both the

González Ruano Journalism Prize and the Mariano

de Cavia Award. His narrative prose includes: Beatus Ille (1986), Icarus Prize, El invierno en Lisboa (1987),

Critics’ Prize and National Literature Prize, both

in 1988, Beltenebros (1989), El jinete polaco (1991),

Planeta Prize and National Literature Prize in 1992,

Los misterios de Madrid (1992), El dueño del secreto

(1994), Nada del otro mundo (1994), Ardor guerrero

(1995), Plenilunio (1997), Carlota Fainberg (2000),

Sefarad (2001), En ausencia de Blanca (2001), Ventanas de Manhattan (2004), El viento de la Luna (2006)

and La noche de los tiempos (2009).

He served as Director of the Instituto Cervantes New

York for two years (2004-2006). He took up his seat in

the Spanish Royal Academy in 1995. He currently lives

between Madrid and New York, and is married to fellow

writer Elvira Lindo.

Several of his novels have been published in English:

Doctor en Filosofía por la Universidad Complutense

de Madrid, en 1984 obtuvo la cátedra de Ética

en la Universidad del País Vasco. Desde comienzos

de los años 90 fue catedrático de Filosofía en la

Complutense de Madrid, dónde acaba de jubilarse.

Ha escrito más de cincuenta obras, entre ensayos

filosóficos, políticos y literarios, narraciones y

teatro. En 1982 ganó el Premio Nacional de Ensayo,

por La tarea del héroe. Sus obras de divulgación

filosófica para jóvenes —Ética para Amador, Política para Amador, Las preguntas de la vida— han sido

traducidas a más de veinte lenguas. Recientemente

ha publicado La vida eterna, ensayo sobre la creencia

religiosa hoy en día. Su última novela, La hermandad de la buena suerte, ganó el Premio Planeta 2008.

Colaborador habitual del periódico El País, co-dirige

con Javier Pradera la revista Claves de razón práctica.

Algunos de sus artículos han obtenido importantes

galardones, como el premio Ortega y Gasset, el

César González Ruano, el Julio Camba y el Cuco

Cerecedo, otorgado por la Asociación de Periodistas

Europeos.

Está en posesión de varios doctorados honoris causa

otorgados por universidades de España, Europa

y América, así como diversas condecoraciones.

Muy implicado en la lucha contra el terrorismo y por

las libertades ciudadanas amenazadas por ETA en

el País Vasco, es miembro de la Plataforma Cívica

“Basta Ya.”

Se han traducido al inglés sus libros Childhood Regained: The Art of the Storyteller (1984), Amador: In Which a Father Addresses His Son on Questions of Ethics (1994) y The Questions of Life: An Invitation to Philosophy (2002).

Fernando Savater

San Sebastián, 1947

After earning his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the

Complutense University in Madrid, he took up

the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of the

Basque Country in 1984. Since the early 90s, he

was Professor of Philosophy at the Complutense

University in Madrid, the position from which he

has recently retired.

He has written more than fifty works, including

philosophical, political and literary essays, narratives

and drama. In 1982 he received the National Literature

Prize for Essays with La tarea del héroe. His works

devoted to popularizing philosophy for young people

— Ética para Amador, Política para Amador, Las preguntas de la vida — have been translated into more

than twenty languages. He has recently published

La vida eterna, an essay on religious beliefs nowadays.

His latest novel, La hermandad de la buena suerte,

won the Planeta Prize in 2008. A regular contributor

to the El País newspaper, he co-edits with Javier

Pradera the Claves de razón práctica magazine. Some

of his articles have received notable awards, such

as the Ortega y Gasset, the César González Ruano, the

Julio Camba and the Cuco Cerecedo prizes, this last

awarded by the Association of European Journalists.

He holds numerous honorary doctorates from

universities in Spain, Europe and America, as well as

several civil decorations. Closely involved in the fight

against terrorism and in favour of the civil liberties

under threat from ETA in the Basque Country, he is a

prominent member of the “Basta Ya” Civic Platform.

Several of his books have been translated into English:
