With great enthusiasm and passion we welcome all 2013 Boogie participants. We are so excited to share another great day with you and celebrate what I believe is the
most energizing run-walk event in the province. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think the race would fill up our beautiful downtown and give over $800,000 to charity. Our boogie team has done an amazing job! The race is what it is today because of their hard work along with that of our community partners, board of directors, sponsors, volunteers and the support of our city. There are no words to express how thankful I am to all of them.
Through the Boogie training program, the corporate and school programs, and our Boogie and coaching teams, we have inspired thousands of men, women and children to run for fun, fitness, and self-affirmation. Today there are thousands of people who have walked, ran and strolled at The Daily News Boogie.
Movement is Change is our mantra and the goal of this community health initiative is always to build a stronger, healthier community. In today’s sedentary world it is important to make fitness accessible for all levels (there is a pace for everyone through Boogie programs) and to move people outdoors and into a healthier (fun) lifestyle.
Our wish for you on Boogie day is to have fun, laugh, run, walk or dance. Whatever makes your heart sing. Live life to the fullest and enjoy all the sights, sounds and emotions of Boogie day.
On behalf of the Boogie team, we wish you all the best on Boogie day and look forward to cheering you in, congratulating you by name, and giving you a hug and a high five as you cross the finish line. Boogie on!

Welcome to the 16th Edition of The Daily News Boogie. Once again, this year’s event has been planned to ensure you are treated to a fun, safe and family friendly day in the
streets of Kamloops. If you have never participated as a runner, walker or spectator, I strongly encourage you to grab your runners or your lawn chair and make this year YOUR year to initiate some change in your life.
As in past years, we are striving to improve the overall experience of our participants, volunteers and spectators. This year we’ve modified three key parts of the out and back race. Please familiarize yourself with the upgrades to the 10km and 21km routes, as well as the direction of travel, as you cross over Overlander Bridge and make your way toward Baker Street (See the map located in the centre of this booklet). Also new this year, is the addition of a short test route for the mobility impaired. We are
excited to have People in Motion and other groups walking or running the 1km Mini Boogie Route. This spectacular day will all start at 8:30 am, with the departure of our 21km runners.
Bringing Boogie to the streets of Kamloops isn’t possible without the active co-operation of the City of Kamloops, the RCMP, the Boogie Volunteers and the many sponsors. I’d like to acknowledge all these wonderful groups that work tirelessly to ensure our city is the best place to live and our Boogie route is safe for all.

On behalf of my colleagues on council, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome participants to this year’s Kamloops Daily News Boogie. The organizers have done
an amazing job in organizing and promoting this year’s event. Boogie would not be possible without financial sponsorship from the business community.
In addition to the funds that are raised locally for various agencies, Boogie brings together participants in every age and ability. As Canada’s Tournament Capital, Kamloops strives to be a healthy community. Events such as Boogie enable us to meet, maintain or begin striving for our own personal goals.
I would also like to thank the numerous volunteers who show up year after year with their bright T-shirts, smiling faces and words of encouragement. We couldn’t do this without you!

Welcome to the 2013 Daily News Boogie!It is with great pleasure that we at The Daily News are able to join with the community to do our part in making this energetic wellness event a success for all runners and walkers.
The Daily News signed on as title sponsor in 2002 and the name of the event was changed in 2007 to reflect our commitment, which is the largest of the more than 100 community groups and events that we sponsor every single year with a total of more than $500,000 in advertising space.
However, the Daily News Boogie is a united effort between the City of Kamloops, local businesses, their employees, social agencies, schools, community groups, individuals and a hard-working volunteer committee.
Each participant is passionate about promoting community health for people of all ages and all shapes and sizes. That’s what The Daily News Boogie is about — welcoming moms, dads, kids, grandparents and runners of all levels onto the street to set their pace toward fitness.

The Boogie route is going to be as exciting and motivating as it’s ever been with crazy water tables and great local entertainers thanks to
Lee’s Music, who provides the sound and Tim Funk who provides the staging and power. People will have so much fun they will forget that they are running.
The fun does not end when you cross the finish line, you can get your photo taken and perhaps win a draw prize. Draws will be made every half hour so be sure to fill out your raffle ticket and place it in the draw bucket at the expo or at the mainstage before the race starts. Maybe you will be the grand prize winner!

2012 — 1,854 participants raised $120,730, a portion of which went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops.
2011 — More than 2,200 people take in Boogie, raising a record $121,891. The crowd – the biggest in Boogie history according to organizer Jo Berry – filled the 200- and 300-block of Victoria for the 5K, 10K and 21K events.
2010 — More than 2,000 runners and walkers show up to Boogie and raise $120,000.
2009 — 2,200 people Boogie and brave cool temperatures.
2008 — 2,200 people Boogie and raise $73,000, along with awareness of KELLI program and the City’s cultural program for low-income families.
2007 — 2,003 people Boogie, raising money, awareness, and participation in movement and health. Name changed to Daily News Boogie.
2006 — 1,507 people raise awareness of CMHA Youth Clubhouse and promote movement and health!
2005 — 1,200 Boogiers come out to assist and raise funds for low-income families and children in Kamloops.
2004 — 847 people take part. Boogie-4-Kids school-based program brings more than 350 children to 1K Mini-Boogie, 5K or 10K. Half marathon grows.
2003 — 503 people Boogie the Bridge. Kids’ events see a significant increase in attendance. Funds raised go to Kamloops Sexual Assault Centre.
2002 — Kamloops Daily News signs on as title sponsor, 383 participants Boogie. Funds raised go to Kamloops Sexual Assault Centre.
2001 — Boogie has 350 participants and adds the half-marathon distance! Funds raised go to Boys and Girls Club.
2000 — Boogie has 190 participants. This celebration in RED grows and the energy is contagious.
1999 — Boogie has 101 participants. Rube Band warms up crowd on a windy day, putting the “boogie” into “Boogie The Bridge.”
1998 — Boogie is created by Kamloops running coach Jo Berry after the loss of her mom, who believed in giving back to the community. Sixty-two runners take part in the all-women’s event.

21K, 10K and 5KStarts and finishes on Second Avenue, in front of Kelly O’Bryan’s. Route goes west on Victoria Street, left up First Avenue to Seymour Street, right on Seymour and merges onto Victoria Street, taking up the two centre lanes. Route continues north across Overlander Bridge to Fortune Drive. All runners turn right onto Baker Street. 5K run/walkers turn left onto Fort Street, merging back onto Fortune and back the way they came. 10 and 21K runners continue onto Baker Street, merging onto Schubert Drive. The 10K runners reach the 5K turnaround point (York Ave) and do a small loop and head back, while the 21K runners continue down Schubert, under the Halston Bridge and along the Millennium Trail to Westsyde Road, turning right onto Kyle Drive and right into Centennial Park, (at Bank Road) where they follow the Westsyde Dyke to Westsyde Rd turning west and head back to the start.
Mini-Boogie This run is designed for children nine and under. It starts and finishes on 2nd Avenue like the main race. Children proceed west on Victoria Street, left up First Avenue right onto Seymour Street and right onto Victoria street heading east back into downtown. Run with Ronald McDonald and other mascots. All participants get a T-shirt, medal, certificate and food from the sponsors. Children five and under must run with a guardian.
People In Motion – Will follow the Mini Boogie Route, and start after the 5km walkers.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region is a well-known, community-minded agency that facilitates mentoring relationships between positive role models and youth. Our
agency is dedicated to helping the leaders of tomorrow realize their potential today by encouraging meaningful relationships. By fostering positive interactions with caring, well-rounded individuals, we hope to be able to make a “Big” difference in the lives of children.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region is honoured to be chosen as the Kamloops Daily News Boogie Charity of Choice for 2013. This will assist us greatly with our newest initiative, the Sports Mentorship Program.
What is the program?Our Sports Mentorship Program is aimed at providing mentorship to children and youth who have expressed an interest in a sport that they have a desire to participate in. The program matches a volunteer(s) with a child who shares a mutual sport interest in order to mentor the child by teaching life skills, goal setting, character and good sportsmanship.
Who is a sport “Big?”The program is for sports enthusiasts who are ready and willing to volunteer as a mentor. It is designed to fit into the life of a volunteer who is already involved in sports. As well, the program has less of a time commitment than our traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters program. With this program, the “match” will meet twice a month for a least one year focusing on sports and being active.
Who is a sports “Little”?Any Little, male or female, who is from a single-parent family, has a serious interest in a sport, and can use a positive and supportive mentor in their life.

Where does all that Boogie the Bridge registration money go? Your Kamloops Daily News Boogie is a premiere provincial outdoor event that gives more to charity per participant than any other run in the province (maybe all of Canada). Last year with the 2012 Boogie the Bridge an AMAZING $33 per runner was donated back to the charities of choice.
The Boogie Team is made up of tireless and devoted volunteers who want to have a part in giving back to the community.
Community Sponsors, Kamloops’ large and small businesses that believe in out mantra “Movement is Change” are key to the Boogie success these critical partners
are helping to change community health and support and encourage all who participate, they simply do this for their community and we encourage you to give back to them with words of encouragement, thanks and maybe even your economic support. Sponsorship monies and gifts in kind donations for the food, water and advertising allow us to give back to the community as much as possible.
Any monies that aren’t used to put the race on are given to our charities, the dynamics of such a large event are overwhelming at times and as your Boogie team we work very hard to control expenses.
To give you a brief look at the scope of what it takes to prepare and plan this annual event each year with limited financial resources here are some of the planning issues we deal with:
Boogie Event Creation: covers everything from strategic planning, location and venue search all the way to event programming.
Our event management process covers: event planning and briefing, volunteers and marshals, operations management, timing services coordination, commentary coordination, race director services, presentations and ceremonies, entertainment sourcing, post event evaluation, budget management.
This is just a sample there are an additional eight categories associated to our process and each category has several duties or procedures attached to it, everything from websites to online registration services. We control these costs as diligently as we can.
