HIDDEN SECRETSBONNIE MARRIS

“My paintings are private moments with the untamed, an inti-mate moment with the elusive side of the wilderness,” relatesBonnie Marris. “If connections between two people beginwith the eyes, I think that when you are introducing people towildlife, you should begin in the same way, with the eyes.“I think about our history with wolves and how much,

throughout history, we feared them. It seems we are nowattempting to understand them rather than fear them.Wolvesare so secretive. It’s taken a long time to realize that they sharemany traits with us. If you think about how family oriented thepack is, it’s amazing. Family is family and we share that socialnature.“We are so busy and so rushed, a painting is a way to stop

and spend a few moments discovering something new aboutthe world in which we live. In the end, it gives us the chanceto discover something new about ourselves as well.”

CROSSING THE BIG SANDYBONNIE MARRIS

Texas longhorn cattle were almost extinct by the 1920s sincemodern day ranchers preferred a breed that could fatten upquickly and they no longer valued the longhorn’s ability to sur-vive in high heat on little water, but lots of cactus, weeds andbrush. Beginning in the 1930s, they were protected and bred insmall stocks, mostly out of the idea of the romance of the OldWest but later longhorns became popular for their lean, lower-cholesterol meat. Commercial ranchers now breed them withother cattle for their many strong traits including smarts andeasy calving.Artist Bonnie Marris had the opportunity to drivethese cattle across the river. “They are so wild, as in undomes-ticated,” she said.“When you stand 20 feet away from one youfeel like you are peering back into history, seeing what cattlewere like before we got our hands on them.” They’re beautiful, intelligent and lean. Sounds like a breed apart.

TESTING THEWATERSBonnie Marris

Wildlife artist Bonnie Marris is exuberant about herfavorite subjects: wolves, horses and bears but just aboutany wildlife subject portrayed with their young is themost exciting of all. Marris took what became, for her,an historic research trip toYellowstone National Park lastyear because she was lucky enough to witness an unusu-al number of bear and their young. Stationed near one ofthe only fast-running rivers in the Park,Marris observedthe mother bring her babies down to see water for the firsttime. A ferocious and dangerous mammal, this motherbear treated her cubs with gentle patience and care.

THE JOY OF MUDBonnie Marris

The life of a brown bear is not easy. To be certain,he has his size to help him find the fullest honey-combs and catch the fattest salmon; however, healso has the largest stomach to fill. From time totime a bear just has to relax and let the cool, oozymud do its work. Fans of Bonnie Marris’ bears willbe able to add to their collection for the first timesince 2004’s sold-out Her Power and Her Glory.

SPLASHBONNIE MARRIS

With thundering hooves, flashing eyes and pounding hearts,Bonnie Marris’ horses represent all that is truly wild in greatwildlife art.Their exhilaration is contagious and their spirit trulyindomitable, as Marris’ skill with the brush and empathy with theanimal soul brings their joyous freedom to life. Each morning, as the sunlight rolls over the mountains, these

three horses stretch their muscles and begin their travel across thecountryside.Today’s leg of the journey begins with a refreshingsplash through an ice-cold stream, fresh from the mountaintop.Asthe water leaps into the air around their knees, the exuberant ani-mals will take different paths over the uneven bottom of the creekbed, but by sunset they will find one another again. By the timethe last star has appeared in the evening sky the family will be safeat rest, gathering strength for the next day’s run.

The first year of a foal’s life is essential to its development into astrong and healthy adult horse. For the first few months, themare will devote her energy to protecting her foal from preda-tors and the elements and from other curious horses in theherd. After three months or so the mare will assume the role ofteacher for her foal. By carefully observing its mother’s behavior, the foal will gain a gentle introduction to finding food and water, recognizing danger and social dynamics within the herd. Like ahuman mother, the mare assesses her foal’s needs and providesfor them with a tenderness that touches the heart.Bonnie Marris’ wildlife family scenes echo human experi-

“I did all the right things! I picked a fabulous stallionwith a great disposition to be her sire and I read all thebooks. In May, we delivered a beautiful little filly. Iworked with her every day, teaching her leading, bathing, grooming, tying and not to kick or nip. Shewas the perfect foal….Then, one morning, I woke upto the ‘terrible twos.’ Suddenly she argued! She threwtantrums! She bucked, she ran, she whinnied for meto leave, then not to leave. She threw her brushes, dumped her grain, splashed water on me, stomped herfeet, shook her head. Was it my fault? Not enough teach-ing? Too much?”

The ideas of communal need and social structure arenot unique to humans. Bonnie Marris captures that andmore in Night Cap. Luminated by the setting sun, friends gather bragging and talking as they quench theirthirst at day’s end. And just like humans, every one hastheir place. The group leader, the one with the foal, isvery proud yet protective. She has a best friend who isclosest and whom she will always choose to care for thefoal when she cannot. Slightly outside the inner circlestands the interloper or outcast, kept at bay by the glareof the mare.“I really hate the idea of impressing toogreatly the habits of people upon the actions of ani-mals,” says Bonnie. “But anyone who has spent timearound such a coffee clatch will smile at just how simi-lar the situation is.”

NIGHT AND DAYBONNIE MARRIS

They say opposites attract and this pair of horses, onefrom each end of the color spectrum, inspired artistBonnie Marris to create her latest fine art limited edi-tion, Night and Day. “I absolutely love this painting,”says Marris.“The duality of nature combined with thestrength and speed infuses this piece with an energy allits own. The spontaneity and excitement that comesfrom a horse is spectacular to watch. But it’s always achallenge to give a painting a sense of movement. These geldings have such a rhythm that against theblurred lighting of the background they appear to sailthrough the canvas. The delicacy and masculinity cre-ates a harmony between the two horses, their enthusi-asm and energy bounce off one another. While thelight plays off the black and white, you still can seeevery color of the rainbow.”

THUNDER AND DUSTBONNIE MARRIS

The wild plains horses in Thunder and Dust are a perfectexample of what makes Bonnie Marris one of thefinest wildlife artists working today. Combining pas-sion for her subject with mastery of color and compo-sition, Marris’ paintings embody the drama and energyof pure wildlife pleasure.“One of my favorite things is to watch horses run,”

Marris says. “They run for the joy of it and the love oftheir own speed, with each horse racing to win. I reallywanted to show speed as a glowing, powerful feeling, through bold color and bright light. I feel the point ofview in the composition really captures the thunder ofthe rumbling ground that would accompany such a spec-tacular moment.”

Cunning, sly and wily, the fox is adept at deception. From time to time, however, the devious dodger can bebested by the trickery of another.“This red fox had beeneyeing a heron in a large pond for quite a while,” says theartist.“The bird waded while the fox waited. When thebird moved into the tall weeds at the pond’s edge, the foxmade his move. Instantly the huge wings unfolded andcarried the heron out of the water, leaving only a featherand a fox’s empty embrace behind.”

JACK’S NIGHT TOWINBONNIE MARRIS

“There’s a kind of magic in making a connectionwith your subject one-on-one rather than as part of apack or herd.As an artist, when I see this spark in anyanimal, I can’t wait to get back into the studio andcapture it. The challenge and real reward is passingthat connective spark to the collector.”
