President’s Message

With October upon us, we’re well into the new school year and NVMTA has already had several events, including the first Judged and General Recitals.

NVMTA has approximately 30 events throughout the year. Both the Piano Concerto Competition and Piano Concerto Festival, as well as members’ preparatory recitals leading up to these events, require a second piano. Twice within the last year we’ve been in danger of losing the second piano at the time we are most in need of it.

I would like to publicly thank Brian Rothstein, son of longtime NVMTA member, Amy Rothstein, for his generosity in allowing NVMTA to use his Steinway concert grand for approxi-mately the next five years! We are also enormously grateful to Jeanne Lowe, who has allowed NVTMA to use her own Steinway since March, 2009; her piano will be leaving WCA in December of this year. Jeanne really helped us out last spring when we were in urgent need of a second piano.

Personally, I feel that an organization as large as ours should have two pianos. This was discussed at the September meeting, and the consensus was that we do, indeed, need our own second piano. In the coming months, we will discuss fundraising strategies. I welcome thoughts from all of you as to how we can realize this goal. In the meantime, I wish each of you contin-ued success in your teaching.

PECANS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

You may sign up to place Pecan orders at the September meet-ing. Plan ahead for the holidays and place your orders early. Pe-can halves are available plain as well as cinnamon glazed or chocolate-covered and come attractively packaged in foil bags ready for that special someone. Orders may also be placed by phone or mail and the deadline to order is October 10th. The number of orders received will be the number of orders placed and pecans will be available by early November. Proceeds from pecan sales go to the scholarship fund. Please direct orders or questions to this year’s Head Nut, Marilynne Jost, 703-242-2808.

You are invited to participate in the 8th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days, a global network of events to promote peace and understanding through the language of music. This year's World Music Days will be held October 1 - 31, 2009, and we hope that you will be able to inspire your audiences through this opportunity. For the past seven years, thousands of professional and amateur musicians have joined this expanding network of concerts to honor the legacy of journalist/ musician Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal South Asia Bureau Chief, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan shortly after 9/11. These concerts commemorate Pearl's life and work by using the universal language of music to spread a message of hope, unity and "Harmony for Humanity." World Music Days, which coincides with Daniel's October 10 birthday, is an awareness-raising initiative, not a fund-raising program. There is no fee to participate. A simple registration of your event(s) at www.danielpearlmusicdays.org will confirm20your participation and promote your event(s) worldwide. Once you register your event(s), participation entails nothing more than a brief dedication from the stage, or in the printed program, in support of the "Harmony for Humanity" theme at one or more of your scheduled October performances. Last year artists at more than 1,000 concerts in 59 countries took part in this global initiative and we are looking forward to many more joining this year. Registering is Easy! For more information and to confirm your participation, please visit our website at www.danielpearlmusicdays.org. Upon registration, you will have the ability to create an Artist Page with information, photos and links to your MySpace, YouTube and other designated websites. You can also visit our eStage page to introduce your music to worldwide listeners via our internet radio station and gallery. Daniel Pearl was a talented musician who joined musical groups in every community he visited, leaving behind a

long trail of musician friends that spans the entire globe. He firmly believed in the power of music to unite peo-

ple.
