Major redevelopment of the Nor th York General Hospi ta l , which included approximately
235,000 sq. f t . of new construct ion and 75,000 sq. f t . of renovat ions. The new construct ion
compr ised an eight storey, 205,000 sq. f t . South East Wing as wel l as a four storey,
30,000 sq. f t . addi t ion to the exist ing South Wing.
The new construct ion and renovat ion areas have accommodated the relocat ion and major
expansion to the Surgical , Cr i t ical Care, Genet ics, Laboratory, CSR, Diagnost ic Imaging
and Maternal Newborn programs. A new Main Entrance lobby, Academic Centre, 32-bed
Sub-Acute Care pat ient uni t and 2 f loors of physic ians’ of f ices were also included in the
new construct ion.

The five storey addition to the existing ten storey
Victoria Wing of St. Michael’s Hospital is a
significant expansion of 200,000 square feet.
Accommodating services from the former Wellesley
Hospital, the added floors house a mechanical
floor, Neonatology, Gynaecology, Mental Health
and Internal Medicine Facilities. The project
allows for a future rooftop helipad and expansion
of the current Information Technology system.
During the course of construction, the hospital
remained fully operational.

Construct ion of the new 137-bed hospi ta l
for West Nor thumber land residents. The
210,000 sq. f t . faci l i ty replaced the current
hospi ta l which was bui l t in 1908. The new
construct ion provided 33 complex care beds,
s ix new pal l iat ive care beds, 18 new
rehabi l i tat ion beds, 55 acute-care beds,
11 sub-acute care beds, s ix intensive care
uni t beds and eight obstetr ical beds. The
Emergency Depar tment has more than tr ip led
in s ize, and the Ambulatory Care Unit
expanded signi f icant ly. A new hel ipor t is
also located at the s i te.

Construction of a f ive storey, 98,000 sq.ft. new regional cancer centre, which was
integrated into the exist ing Grand River Hospital. The building has been designed to
introduce natural l ight into as many of the patient areas as possible. Due to the proximity
of other hospital bui ldings, the project involved f ive phases to maintain continuous
operation of exist ing services throughout the construction. This outpatient faci l i ty includes
six high-energy radiation treatment rooms, a 26-station chemotherapy suite and al l related
examination and suppor t faci l i t ies.
RADIATION TREATMENT
The hear t of the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre is i ts radiation area, which is located
at ground level, not bunkered in the basement as in many cancer centres. I t has a sl ightly
celestial feel, created by sunshine beaming through skyl ights over each of the six radiation
suites. The rooms containing the l inear accelerators are separated by concrete walls more
than a metre thick.

QHC Trenton Memor ial have renovated and expanded
their exist ing bui ld ing to provide new accommodat ion
for Diagnost ic Imaging, Complex Cont inuing Care
Inpat ients and Rehabi l i tat ion Therapy. The design has
provided for fur ther expansion for consol idat ion of
women’s diagnost ic services such as mammography
and ul t rasound.
The Complex Care pat ient uni t has been developed
around a central landscaped roof- top cour tyard for
therapeut ic and recreat ional use by pat ients.
The phase two of th is project involved developing
t ie- ins between the new and old bui ld ings and
renovat ing the former Emergency Depar tment and
wait ing room for Diagnost ic Services. A number
of services wi l l remain in the or ig inal bui ld ing,
including the Complex Cont inuing Care uni t (30 beds),
Administrat ion, Diagnost ic Services, Cardiopulmonary,
Faci l i ty Services, Food Services, Mater ia l Management,
and Physiotherapy. The exist ing bui ld ing remained
ful ly operat ional dur ing the course of th is construct ion.

a sub-contractor.
The Nor thumber land Hi l ls Hospi ta l took possession of the
faci l i ty in September 2003. This is the one of the few
hospi ta l projects in Ontar io that was on t ime and on budget.
We have found that the rappor t and communicat ion wi th
Bondf ie ld representat ives throughout the project has been
excel lent . Their representat ives are responsive to our
requests and concerns and work towards solut ions to
issues. In addi t ion, they have suppor ted local hospi ta l
