The dramatic rise in India's oil demand shows no signs of faltering,
compelling leading analysts to say that the country will remain a driver of
Asian growth in 2017. The country imported 197.5 million mt, or 4.33 million
b/d, of crude oil in the rst 11 months of 2016, up 10.5% year on
year.Consumption is expected to rise 7-8% this year, outpacing China's
demand growth for the third consecutive year.
Low crude oil prices could continue to support the demand growth despite modest
global economic prospects and accordingly crack spreads of most of the products are
expected to remain healthy. Additionally, any recovery in crude oil prices may also lead
to inventory gains for the reners.
The government's "Make in India" initiative -- which aims to raise the share of
manufacturing in GDP over the next few years, the clean fuel drive, sharp anticipated
growth in transport demand and air travel, and most importantly the country's insatiable
growth for petrochemicals will act as a boon for products like gasoline, jet fuel, LPG and
naphtha, helping post close to double-digit growth in 2017 -- similar to that seen last year --
if not higher.
Two petrochemical projects -- Reliance's aromatic expansion and OPAL's mixed feed
cracker – are also expected to give a big upward push to naphtha demand. Further to
meet it's growing demand, the country will need to add another 100 MT of rening
capacity by 2030.
In light of the above, the Global Rening & Petrochemicals Congress (GRPC 2017) - widely
recognized as “A Denitive Downstream Indian Forum”,would facilitate global, regional &
national stakeholders of the industry to explore synergies for growth &partnership
opportunities, whilst shedding lights on critical business issues such as: market trends,
margin/efciency improvements, breakthrough process technologies, catalyst
developments, and mega integration of renery & petrochemical complexes.

The Energy and Climate Change Initiative Society (ECIS) organized Global Rening and Petrochemicals
Congress (GRPC) on the theme “The Age of Downstream Transformation” at the Bombay Convention & th thExhibition Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra during 25 -26 May, 2017. The Congress was divided into
Inaugural Session, Exhibition opening, Theme Address, two Trigger Sessions and 7 Technical Sessions.
1. INAUGURAL SESSION:
During Inaugural Session, Welcome Address was delivered by Shri. A.K. Hazarika, WELCOME ADDRESS:
former CMD, ONGC and Chairman, Advisory Board, ENCIS and informed about the aim and objective
of ENCIS. He also conveyed that this is the 2nd edition of GRPC held in 2017 and 1st GRPC being
organized in 2015.
Elaborating theme of the GRPC 2017 “The Age of Downstream Transformation”, he observed that
presently global downstream industry is in a state of transition and is passing through several
transformations. The fall in oil prices, structural shifts in demand and supply trends, the evolving
regulations on sulfur cap in fuel, the continued expansion of the Asian economies, and the possible
repeal of the crude export ban in the US are some of numerous industry trends that add risk to the
business and thus calling for the industry's transformation. Therefore, theme of the GRPC 2017 is
selected as “The Age of Downstream Transformation”. One has to use new innovations, intelligence,
energy efcient technologies and strategies in the global downstream industry to survive and
ultimately thrive. Government of India has already taken a decision to reduce import of oil by 10 %
which should be compensated by adopting energy conservation measures, increasing energy
efciency, increasing oil production and adopting alternative renewable sources of energy.
He also informed that ENCIS for the rst time through the Global Rening & Petrochemicals Congress
2017 (GRPC) has created four categories of awards to promote innovation and excellence through
transformation at the national, regional & global industry level. He welcomed all for active
participation in deliberations.
SPECIAL ADDRESS: Prof. Dr. G.D. Yadav, Vice-Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT)
delivered Special Address. He informed that global energy is very important sector and is changing
every day. Energy mx is shifting due to new technologies and environment. Although oil, gas and coal
are the major source of energy, use of solar, wind and hydro has also enhanced recently. He predicted
that no crude oil will be available after 2054 and, therefore, new technologies are required to convert
high crude oil to light oil. He also emphasized importance of bio-reneries where organic waste can be
converted into manufacturing hydrocarbons like ethanol. Municipal waste can also be used to
generate energy. However, R & D is required to develop innovative ideas. He also informed that 2,300
catalysts are produced and used in petroleum reneries which also need to be manufactured in India.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS: In his Keynote Address, Shri K. K. Jain, Executive Director (Petrochemical), IOCL
informed about the current status of oil, gas and shale gas at the national and international level. In
India, emphasis is on reduction in footprints through use of LPG, renewable technology, use of electric
cars by 2030, and reduction of oil usage in power sector. Kerosene and furnace oils demand is
decreasing whereas demand for LPG has more than doubled. Ujjala scheme due to use of LED bulbs
has encouraged energy saving through energy efciency. Mega reneries should be installed to
manufacture petroleum products. Kerosene should be used to manufacture other products. Petro
products should also be used for hydrogen production. China is looking for new technologies like coal
to oil technology and use of shale gas etc. In U.S., shale gas is being used to manufacture light oil. Oil
production in middle east is almost stagnant and crude oil prices are coming down. Saudi Arab and
Iran are emphasizing to use cracking oil to produce more value added products.

Shri G.C. Chaturvedi, Former Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, INAUGURAL ADDRESS:
Govt. of India in his Inaugural Address informed that India is one of the highest user of crude oil,
importing about 80 % of crude oil and has doubled since year 2000. Therefore, growth of the reneries
will continue in future too. Import of crude oil is better and cheaper than importing nal petroleum
products. Now, export of petroleum products has gone up drastically leading to setting up of more
reneries. Petrochemical units are under constraint due to emphasis on compliance BS standards VI.
More funds are required to upgrade the technology accordingly to ensure compliance to the
environmental regulations.

Chairman, Advisory Board, ENCIS and Former ED, IOCL thanked all the participants, delegates, guests,
speakers, organizing force for the success of GRPC, 2017. He congratulated award winners. He also
discussed about the future of petrochemical industry and emphasized to use disruptive technology to
produce more (products) from less (crude oil) and conserve energy.

2. Theme Session on Digital Transformation - Innovation & Disruptive Technologies was THEME SESSION:
chaired by Mr. H.C. Mehta, President, Rening & Marketing, RIL. Before calling speakers, he informed stthat digital transformation is not a myth bur reality. Data is the new oil for the 21 century. We have
created more digits in last 2 years than throughout life. Digital disruption has led to unmanned retail
outlets, digitally netted customers, hyperlocal moble fuel, use of articial intelligence, fuel by aps etc.
I. Mr. Vishal Mehta, Head of Digital Strategy, Architecture and Technology, Reliance Industries Ltd.
informed about the 'Digital Sweet Spot'. Real and digital world is using intelligence. Computing is
ubiquitous and can be done anywhere. Digitization is de-mystied by Uber, Ola and Face book
etc. However, there are so many challenges (Assess, identify, prioritize, evaluate) and ideas (3D
printing, remote sensing, internet of things, shared standards, collaboration and innovation
centers) to be used in digitization.
II. Mr. Saurabh Singh, Senior Principal, A.T. Kearney discussed 'Future of Production – Accelerating
Value Creation'. He informed that petroleum industry is changing. Production is more than
manufacturing and this is the age of conversion. Petrol vehicle will vanish after 8 years if use of
electrical vehicle is successful. Accordingly, everyone has to change with time to survive. Oil and

gas companies have to use digitization in renery, product distribution, product marketing and
capital projects. There will certainly be some implications for organizations and policy makers.
III. Mr. Vinay Shenoy, Digital Lead, Accenture informed about 'Beyond the Barrel-Retail and
Experimental Services for the Oil and Gas Companies'. He emphasized for the use of digital
technologies in Oil & Gas Companies during the digital transformation, we are dealing with
uncertainties & customers but we have to consider design thinking, data delivers through
technologies & deliberate choosing.
3. TRIGGER SESSION I (Global Rening Industry Outlook)
Mr. B.K. Namdeo, Former Director (Reneries), HPCL was the Session Chairman.
I. Ms. Vandana Hari, Founder & CEO, Vanda Insights deliberated on 'Rening Margins in an age of
lower crude prices: What to expect?' She informed that OPEC & Shale, USA are changing the
economics & world market. The price of the oil & gas is reduced drastically. At the same time US is
producing more Shall Gas.
II. Mr. Debasish Bera, Associate Director- Oil & Gas PwC India discussed 'Future of Rening – Indian
Growth Story'. He informed that production of petrol & diesel has expected to go up but renery
margins are likely to fell in 2017. Besides, there are challenges posed by Auto Fuel Police, 2014 &
Vision 2025. We have jumped from BSIII in 2015 to BSIV in 2017 & further to BSVI in 2019 which is to be
implemented in the whole country by 2019. This will require approximately Rs. 80,000 Cores as
operational cost for revamping the technologies & space in the renery complex. We should
concentrate on energy efcient improvement, renery margin management & improvement,
supply chain optimization & BSVI fuel quality compliances.
3. TRIGGER SESSION II (Global Petrochemicals Industry Outlook)
Mr. K.K. Jain, ED, IOCL was the Session Chairman
I. Mr. John Paisie, Executive Vice President, Stratas Advisors informed about the Petrochemical
Outlook.
II. Mr. Utpal Sheth, Senior Director–Polymers, IHS Chemical discussed Asian Polyolen Business. How
Long will the Party Last?
III. Ms. Malini Hariharan, Head of South Asia Markets ICIS intimated about the Asian Petrochemical
Market Outlook. She also intimated 80% of the petrochemicals are imported in India.
4. TECHNICAL SESSION I (New Conguration Models - Renery & Petrochemicals Integration)
Mr. Anil Sarin, Managing Director, CB & I was the Session Chairman
I. Mr. Brij Behari, General Manager-Technical. IOCL informed about his experience in Renery &
Petrochemical Integration – an IOCL Perspective.
II. Mr. Anil Sarin, Managing Director, CB & I intimated about Integration of Renery with
Petrochemicals: Advanced Technological Solutions for Synergy and Improved Protability. He
informed that polymer consumption in India is 7.6 kg/capita against 35 kg/capita world average.
We should concentrate on manufacturing higher value products like propylene, BTX etc. &
improve energy efciency in all the reneries including Paradip Renery, Gowahati renery,
Bongaigoan renery, Asia Condential Renery etc.

III. Mr. Vinay Gupta Dy. Manager (Process), Corporate Strategy & Business Development, EIL discussed
about the Hydrocarbon Dominated Cluster–A Gateway to Regional Development. He informed
that there are 52 reneries manufacturing 2365 MMTPA. Most of the reneries are of low capacities
& some of the inefcient reneries need to be closed down. All the reneries should be evaluated
from concept to commissioning.
5. TECHNICAL SESSION II (Plant Optimization & Operational Excellence)
Mr. Kumar Swain, Sr. Vice President & head - technical, Essar Oil Company was the Session Chairman.
I. Mr. Martin Turk, Director Global Industry Solutions HPI, Schneider Electric informed about 'The
Journey to Asset Performance Excellence in Petroleum Rening & Petrochemicals.' He emphasized
on empowering people by digitalizing value chain involving connect, collect, analyses and act.
He also emphasized to use analyzed technologies, cloud, IIOT, Mobility, data predictive analyses.
II. Mr. Martin Gough, Managing Director, Calgavin UK delivered on 'Values & Benets of Improving the
Performance of Heat Exchangers' He informed that his company spends 15 to 20 percent on R&D.
Every plant what's to save energy & their main concern is how to achieve in the existing plants. Most
of the time energy studies/ Heat transfer models do not identify operational issues. But
concentrating on these issues leads to improvement in performance of Heat exchangers.
III. Mr. Vikram Pandit, General Manager, Sandvik Materials Technology informed about the Materials
of Demanding Topside offshore Application. He emphasized mainly on selection of proper material
to avoided corrosion.
IV. Mr. Venkata Prasad Kutikuppala, Senior Process Engineering Lead, Aggreko intimated about
'Seasonal Performance Augmentation with Tailored Interim Cooling Solutions' He also informed
that his company has helped in solving many problems related to economic benets to petroleum
industries.

Day 2, Friday, 26 May 2017
6. TECHNICAL SESSION III (Advances in Process Technologies - Rening)
Dr. N. V. Choudary, General Manager (R&D), HPCL was the Session Chairman.
I. Dr. N. V. Choudary, General Manager (R&D), HPCL deliberated on 'Recent Advances in Gas
Processing Technologies.' He informed about the HPCL Plants at Mumbai & Vizag, He also informed
about the new products and processes developed at HPCL Green R&D Center, Bangalore &
received 60 patents so far.
II. Mr. Bharat Goenka, Head - Technology Licensing India, Shell Global Solutions deliberated on the
Capturing the Maximum Margin in the Post-IMO 2020 World. He informed that main fuel market is
growing by 8% & main emphasis is on low Sulphur content.
III. Mr. Puneet Puri, Technology, Business Development Manager, CB & I informed about the
Innovative Solution to Tackle India Transportation Outlook Concerns – CD Tame & CD ALKY. He
elaborated on CD Tame & CD Alky technologies informing that they are technically economically
& operational. Sulphur content will also reduce from 40 ppm in BSIV to 10 ppm in BSVI, which will
improve the air quality.

7. TECHNICAL SESSION IV (Process Technologies Innovations - Petrochemicals)
,Mr. S. Mitra, President Petrochemicals Strategies, RIL Session Chairman highlighted that integrated
renery complexes is a better option that stand alone renery.
I. Mr. Rajeev Singh, Senior Technical Professional, KBR informed about the Maximizing Renery
Margins by Petrochemicals Integration. He discussed at length about challenges, opportunities &
benets are integrated renery complexes. Presently Gasoline and Naphtha demand has gone
down, Diesel demand is going high Gas demand has gone down due to use of electrical vehicles.
Sulphur labels have reduced due to tight emission. Specic demand for petrochemicals products
like Propylene, Ethylene & Olen has increased. KBR has developed the Olen technology which
brings higher prot margins to petroleum reneries.
II. Mr. Sachin Joshi, Licensing Manager, GTC Technology informed about the Advances in Distillation
of Petrochemicals and other Hydrocarbons'. They have developed advanced distillations GT-HIDS
technologies which has low cost advanced low cost advantage & low energy consumption.
III. Mr. Guido Crevecoeur, Licensing Manger, SABIC Technology & Licensing Strategy intimated about
in a Changing Ethylene Value Chain Landscape. He informed that SABIC is a major player in
Ethylene value chain thay invest in technology for autonomous growth, new & improved
technologies, product innovation n food packaging.
8. TECHNICAL SESSION-V (Cracking the game changer)
Mr. B.K. Namdeo, Former Director (Reneries), HPCL was the Session Chairman.
I. Mr. D G Saidulu, Senior Research Manager, Indian Oil R&D discussed about the Cracking
Technologies for Improved Protability. He informed that more cracking units are required due to
high demand of petrochemicals like auto LPG, BTX, Ethylene, Propylene, Butane, Xylene ETC. New
technologies like Indalin – plus technology & Indmax technology.
II. Mr. Haresh Sippy, Mnaging Director, TEMA India Limited informed about the Improved Design of
Threaded Closures for Screw Plug Heat Exchangers. He emphasized that the heat exchangers has
maximum dened value.
III. Mr. Dhiman Ghosh, Senior Director Industrial Business, Vertiv deliberated on Critical Space
Management intimating about latest modular industrial DC and thermal management solutions.
9. TECHNICAL SESSION VI (Advancement in HSE/PSM)
Mr. V V Surya Rau, Group President Safety and Operational Risk, RIL was the Session Chairman
I. Mr. NV. Subba Rao, CEO, Chola MS Risk Services informed about the Advancement in Process
Safety Management. He briefed about MSIHC rules, 1989, 2000 & 2016; OSHA 1992 & CCPS 2017, He
also informed that there are challenges in Indian scenarios regarding process safety. Process
safety management is not mandatory in India.
II. Mr. Devendra Katiyar, Director - Oil & gas, Dupont Sustainable Solutions talked about What's Next
for Process Safety, there are several operational risks in processes. Process safety & risk mitigation is
generally missing in many industries. Due importance should be given in recognizing risk, risk
reduction & risk governance. He also informed that most of the time human factors are responsive
for safety concerns.

III. Mr. Arunkumar Arunachalam, Manager Safety & Risk, Technical Safety, India, DNV GL - Oil & Gas
informed about the MYTH- Functional Safety Implies having a SIL rated component. He informed
about the several MYTH's preventing industries regarding use of certied equipment's, failure
prevention, proof test, partial testing, Function safety system ETC, He also talked about pitfalls and
solutions.
10. TECHNICAL SESSION VII (Advances in Catalyst & Additives)
Mr. Vipan Goel, Country Manager, WR Grace Session Chairman.
I. Mr. Saurabh Dhir, Technical Service Manager, Shell India Markets Pvt. Ltd. informed about the
Building Blocks of Robust Hydro Processing Unit Operations. He informed about the use of catalyst
technologies maximis protability he also informed about the impact of several contaminants like
arsenic, silicon, nickel, vanadium etc.
II. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Research Manager, Indian Oil R&D informed about the New Technology
IndianOIl Ziegler-Natta Catalyst Technology Platform by the Indian Oil. The new technology
developed has several changes and opportunities while developing catalysts indigenously & used
for manufacturing polyolens, polypropylene, and polyethylene. Several patents have been
received for new technologies.
