A man has been jailed for stabbing a police officer in the side of his chest with a screwdriver. Shaughan Ryan Boardman, born 18/3/88, of Priory Place, Tonge Moor, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing of section 47 Assault on a police officer, assaulting a further police officer and taking without the owner's consent two motorcycles. He was sentenced on Wednesday 29 August 29 2012, at Bolton Crown Court to 12 months imprisonment. At about 10.55pm on Monday 14 May 2012, a man reported his Yamaha motorbike stolen from outside his house on Darwen Road, Bolton. Around the same time police received a call that two men had been seen pushing motorbikes near to the bus terminus on Eagley Way, Bromley Cross. Officers were sent to the scene, among them plain-clothed officers from the Bolton Task Force who were in the area at the time. They found two abandoned bikes that looked they had been concealed.

They began to search the area and noticed a small silver car being driven down Eagley Way towards where the bikes were hidden out of sight. Two men were then seen ducking down behind the bus stop so two officers jogged over to them. They found two men, including Boardman, crouched over the motorcycles. Immediately identifying themselves as police officers, they ran over to the suspects, both of whom tried to run off, but Boardman was detained. One of the officers grabbed him as he ran passed but he saw something red in Boardman's right hand as he lunged at him, striking him just below the waist, hitting his body armour. He then thrust at him again, stabbing him near his armpit.

Other officers arrived at the scene and helped arrest Boardman. He was found to have a red-handled flat-head screwdriver. The injured officer was taken to hospital where he had treatment to a cut to his side. The second man got away and remains outstanding.

Detective Constable Stuart Round, of Bolton CID, said: "This case demonstrates the dangers faced by police officers who are just trying to their job in their communities.

"There was some excellent police work to get officers to the position where they could confront these thieves, but they were soon confronted by a man who was prepared to use whatever means necessary to escape. "Thankfully the officer's body armour did the job it was designed for and prevented a more serious injury and he has been able to make a full recovery."

Operation Viking is continuing and being very successful in reducing Burglaries. We are continuing with extra patrols both overt and covert across the area. All of our main targets have now been charged with offences or are receiving high levels of attention to dissuade them from re offending.

We still need to remind people about vehicle crime in Rumworth, please ensure that you do not leave any valuables on view in your car and that it is left secure at night.

You can also follow the Bolton Centre team on @TWITTER.COM/GMPBoltonCentre, this is updated daily with information re crime trends in your area.

The Safe4Summer operation re ASB over the school holidays has been very successful so far with a good reduction in incidents involving those of school age.

Rumworth

Thankfully only 1 Burglary over last 2 weeks, in the Park View Road area. Great work by a neighbour in ringing in about a suspicious male resulting in him being detained and charged.

More good news when 2 offenders climbed over a rear wall on Hooton Street to steal a childs scooter and bike, as they made their escape officers nearby detained them and where able to trace the owner who wasn’t aware of the theft. Offenders later charged.

3 motor vehicles stolen in the Deane area, one taken overnight by 3 males using a white coloured recovery vehicle, no further details unfortunately.

There have been a spate of theft from vehicles in the Penarth Road area, all having property such as phones and bags left on display stolen.

Please ensure windows and doors are secured when your property is empty and overnight. Never leave windows open wide, as this is an open invitation for an opportunist burglar. Also please ensure vehicles are locked and secure with any windows closed an don't leave valuables inside . If possible park your vehicle in a well lit street or a locked and secure garage.

Town Centre

We have had an increase in thefts of pedal cycles across the town centre, 3 of which had been locked and secured in public areas such as the Bus Station. Offenders are using tools to remove the locks usually at busy times, but no one seems to have seen them doing it.

Also have the almost regular reports of people losing mobile phones on nights out in the bars and clubs of the Town Centre. We are finding that many are handed in or found and then retained by the premises concerned hoping the owners will come and collect, when they don’t they are usually returned to the phone companies or ourselves. It may be worth checking your footsteps before reporting as stolen or lost in case it’s been handed in.

Please ensure you are aware of bags on your person. Make sure handbags are zipped up making it harder for thieves to reach into your bags. Also please ensure that bikes are secured when left unattended.

Generally we have had some really goodreductions in burglaries and vehicle crimein the East over the past 3-4 weeks.

However, over the past few days there havebeen a number of insecurity burglaries in the Astley Bridge Sharples area where car keys have been stolen together with the vehicle.

These are where victims have left their front doors insecure and keys either on display or at least in close proximity to the front door.

Police staff from Astley Bridge have been patrolling the area delivering leaflets and speaking to the community and informing them to secure their doors and windows and to keep their car keys out of sight.

Other areas of Bolton are currently experiencing a rise in car crime. Although we are not suffering to the same extent on the east, we are closely monitoring the car crime situation.
