APROQUEN and Hospital Johns Hopkins in Mission of Micro Vascular Surgery

APROQUEN's Operating Room

inside the Burn Unit was witness to

the Microvascular Surgical Mission

held for a second time from the 13th

to the 16th of February with the

medical group of Johns Hopkins

Hospital of Baltimore, headed by

Doctor Patrick Byrne, professor and

head of the Department of

Otolaryngology – Head and Neck

Surgery of the School of Medicine of

Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Byrne

worked side by side with the

APROQUEN team headed by Dr.

Mario Pérez, Medical Director of

this Association. Surgeries lasted a

total of 8 hours each, and were

practiced on patients: Yader Ruíz

Rivas of 21 years of age that suffered

from a severe burn aftermath that

produced limitations in the

movement of his head, neck, thorax,

and back, and on Bianca Marina

González González of 16 years old

who suffers from Parry Romberg

Syndrome or otherwise known as

Progressive Hemifacial Atrophy.

These interventions, ranging

between 60 and 80 million dollars

in the United States, were

performed on both patients

completely free of cost.

In representation of the Great Duke

of Luxemburg, the wives of the

honorary councils in Central

America visited the Burn Unit with

the purpose of getting to know

APROQUEN's work more closely,

which is also the reason behind the

country's decision to join this year's

Campaign on the Prevention of

Burn Injuries in Elementary Schools.

This activity that APROQUEN

initiated since the year 2011 has

counted with the support of

Dicegsa, Fundación César

Guerrero, Hospital Metropolitano

Vivian Pellas, and the Fire

Department of Ingenio San Antonio,

as well as with the support of

Physiotherapy students from

POLISAL and other volunteers.
