caracteriza a nuestro equipo.”
PUERTO RICANS SCORE THEIR FIRST VICTORY
Puerto Rican team achieved their first victory over Costa Rica (25-13, 25-10, and 25-14) in the
III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup, last Qualifier to the World Championship at the Coliseum
of Ciudad Deportiva.
In a game which was not so attractive except for the learning by the new generations, none
player could tally double digits. Although on the Puerto Rican side, they send to the court all
the players among who their captain Joscelyn Coronel (7) and Ivania Ortiz with 6 points as
many as the Costa Rican leader, Mariana Rodríguez.
The Puerto Rican coach, Luis Aponte, showed happily with the victory and assured that “our
service was essential to win over Costa Rica which could not control their reception. We had
many opportunities with direct balls to our side and so, we could capitalize.”
Joscely considered that “the game was easier today. We were better in the service and
reception. We had also the chance of including the girls from the bench and they made an
excellent work.”
Andrés López, Costa Rican coach, stated that it was good to have higher scores than yesterday
against Chile. In the rallies that we won, the points were not gifted; and obviously it is very
important, although, the rival gave us some points, but not so much than yesterday. Today I
am much pleased as I feel the girls learn mainly how not to miss the service so much.
Their captain, Mariana Rodríguez, said that “we are getting used to these new experiences of
how to play abroad and in a court so big. Today we played better despite Puerto Rico is a
difficult team. They have quite tall and technical players. In our case, we are less tall, but we
learn and it is vital.”
Argentina defeats Mexico in three sets
HAVANA, Cuba, March 18, 2015 – A decisive comeback in the third set assured the triumph of
the Argentinean team in consecutive sets over Mexico 25-11, 25-18, and 25-18 and also their
first victory in the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup at the Sports City.
The Central Americans tried to survive when they took the lead in the third set 4-9, but a
better performance by the South Americans erased the difference to achieve the victory in a
match where the opposite player Anahi Tosi, the only one player with a double-digit tally,
stood out; followed by María Corbalán (9) and Fiamma Biain (8). From their rival side, Karla
Mireles (8) was top scorer.
Mauro Silvestre, the South American coach, expressed his joy for the performance of his pupils
“as we want to get the most of this event and it would be helpful on the way to the world
championship. Today I think they were more focused on the game and they knew to control
Mexico, particularly with the block and defence. Also they were more efficient in the service.
Our volleyball is growing, I think.”
Their captain, the setter Azul Rodríguez, assessed that “we played like we know. We changed
completely our attitude from yesterday and everything we studied for today’s match worked
out. Actually we have learned that when being behind we must show the enthusiasm which
characterises our team.”
Cuban, Ricardo Naranjo, coach of Mexico, congratulated his opponents “they knew control the
emotions; they also were very intelligent and skilful; and they demonstrated they play more.
My players do not know to play with the required liveliness. Volleyball is not only to spike.
They should learn other elements and our terrible game level led us to the second loss.
Nevertheless it helps us to know who will be in the world championship and call others who
probably will have more heart at the play time.”
Karina Flores, the Central American captain, assured that today’s performance “was for the
lack of confidence and ignorance, lack of practice of some players in international events and
the resulting afraid of failing, among other inconveniences in the team that affect. On the
other hand the Argentineans won as they played better. If we were better we could have
fought more.”
DOMINICAN STRONG SERVICE SURRENDERS PERUVIANS
Havana, Cuba, March 18, 2015 – Another demonstration of power the Dominican team made
to overcome Peru 25-15, 25-9, and 25-14, and so they keep themselves unbeatable in the Pool
A at the III Girls’ U18 Pan Am Volleyball Cup.
In 66 minutes the Dominicans sealed the victory with a very harmonic game level in which the
opposite player Massiel Matos (16) and the outside hitter Natalia Martínez (11) were the top
scorers, whereas Vielka Peralta contributed with 9 points. On the South American side, Leslie
Leyva Garcia topped seven.
Brazilian, Alexandre Ceccato, Dominican Republic’s coach, commented that “we expected to
suffer a little as Peru serves too hard, but it was the other way around. However my team did
it better, particularly Natalia Martínez destroyed their game and it made easy our attack. We
played pretty well.”
The Dominican captain, Yokaty Pérez, a corpulent setter, expressed that “we played
confidently by doing what we have practiced. Actually we have a powerful team as on
Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays we work out in the gym; but generally we train vigorously
throughout the week.”
Spaniard coach, Juan Diego Garcia, coach of Peru, explained that “we met a really powerful
opposing team in service and they destabilise a lot the game. Thus they had a good block and
defence and it gave them several options in the counterattack which we did not know how to
act in response. Moreover they are very tall, and have an excellent fitness and much power in
the net.”
The South American captain, Nicole Abreu, illustrated in her words the reasons of such loss
when declaring “we did not enter much focused on the match and the Dominicans gave their
utmost to defeat us. We did not know how to solve it.”
Cuba closer to U18 WCH qualification
Havana, Cuba, March 18, 2015 – Cuba team won over Chile in consecutive sets 25-13, 25-17,
and 25-13 on the second competition day of the III U18 Girls’ Pan American Volleyball Cup
getting closer to the qualification for the World Championship to be held next August.
In one of the games of the Pool B which gathers the candidates for such major event, the local
players were superior in spike (41-16), and in block (9-3) in an attack led by Kitania Medina and
Diaris Pérez (both with 14), and Heidy Casanova (11). On the South American side, Josefa Martí
was the top scorer (7).
Tomás Fernández, the Antillean coach, stated that “we scouted Chile. However my team
played at level of the rival by making many unnecessary and unforced errors; although, our net
game, jumping power and impressive strength are factors to win smoothly, even gifting the
opponent the service. Nevertheless, I am happy as we are step ahead of the available ticket.”
Their captain, Aidchi Aguero, assured that “we triumphed for the unity, the impetus and desire
to win as it helped us to be closer to the qualification. Although, we relaxed a lot and played at
their level point by point, but at the end we knew to overtake it and define the success.”
The Chilean coach, Hugo Jauregui, indicated that “it was a very hard match as the Cubans are
pretty fast spikers. Although starting from the service we created them some difficulties. It was
our merit; Cuba could not develop the game shown yesterday and at certain times we could
demonstrated our game, and in addition to our good service, we were able to defend.
However we could not get to win.”
Catalina Reyes, the South American captain recognised that “we could have fought much
more, but we made a lot of errors. First, we damaged them with our service and defence, but
only for a while. What is lacking is keeping a good rhythm.
