1. INTRODUCTION
The Ministrio da Agricultura, Pecuria e Abastecimento [Brazilian Ministry of
Agriculture, Livestock and Supply], by means of CONAB - Companhia Nacional de
Abastecimento [National Company of Food and Supply], conducted the Third Survey of
Plantation Intention for the 2009/10 Crop from December 15-18 2009. The researchedstates were in the Center-South region, the Northeast region, western Bahia, south of
Maranho, South of Piau, and in the North Region the states of Tocantins and Rondnia.
The research had as purpose measuring the planting area for the summer crops
for cotton, peanuts 1st crop, rice, edible beans 1st crop, castor bean, corn 1st crop and
soybean, and also evaluate the performance of winter crops (oat, rye, barley, wheat and
triticale), which are in the final harvesting stage.
In order to perform the fourth Survey on Grain Harvest, CONAB technicians
contacted the main producer regions in Brazil, interviewing farmers, agronomists and
technicians from Cooperatives, Agriculture Secretariats, Technical Assistance and Rural
Extension Offices (official and private) and Financial Agents.
We thank the extremely important participation and collaboration of professionals
of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE and of those aforementioned
offices, as well as from the workers in this office who directly or indirectly participated in
this work.
Taking into consideration the users' demands for crop information, the surveys
have been conducted in strict collaboration with the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e
Estatstica - IBGE [Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics], an agency of the
Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management, therefore consolidating the harmonization
process of official crop estimates for the main Brazilian crops.
In this process, both institutions have joined efforts in order to assure the most
accurate and reliable crop monitoring information within the competence of the Braziliangovernment, thus progressively coordinating methods, sources, counting period, dates and
hours of disclosure. For such endeavor, there was the priceless and permanent
contribution of federal, state and municipal public offices and other institutions providing
agricultural information.
2. ESTIMATE OF THE AREA TO BE PLANTED (47.88 million hectares)
With the planting of the first summer crops (cotton, rice, edible beans 1st crop, corn
1st crop and soybean) almost completed, the survey performed on the second fortnight of

December/2009, considering the used methodology and maintaining the same planted
area for the second and third summer crops in 2008/09; in the states of the North and
Northeast region, the planting has not started and the expected planting area for this crop
is estimated in 47.88 million hectares, an increase of 0.4% or 208.4 thousand hectares in
relation to the 2008/2009 crop.
With the exception of soybean, all crops in the survey presented reduction in the
planting area. In percentage terms, corn first crop presents the greatest reduction (10.7%)
or 989.5 thousand hectares less, which is explained by a surplus of the product in the
market and the prices, which are below the expected by the producers.
The cotton shows a decrease of 6% of the planted area in all states in the center
South region. The low rates in the internal and external markets are the main factors for
the reduction in the planting area. With the price recovery in the last months of the yearand the good perspectives of future prices, this situation may change for an equal or even
superior area regarding the best crop, especially in the states in the center West region
where the planting is performed until the month of January in after the first harvests of
soybean.
The planted area with Rice presents a drop of 2.6% (77 thousand hectares). The
greatest reduction is in the Center-West region (minus 38.2 thousand hectares), where
there is the predominance of upland rice and most significant in the state of Mato Grosso(minus 20.5 thousand hectares). In the South Region, there is reduction in Rio Grande do
Sul due to the difficulties in planting resulting from excessive rains.
The first crop edible bean shows a reduction of 4.5% (63.4 thousand hectares) in
the planted area. The low prices of beans in the past few months are the greatest
disencouraging factor for planting. With the exception of the States of So Paulo, Rio de
Janeiro, Tocantins and Mato Grosso do Sul; other states have reduced their planting
areas. The greatest reduction is observed in the state of Paran, with fewer 38.4thousand hectares, followed by Santa Catarina with fewer 12.3 thousand hectares.
Soybean shows an increase of 6.1% in the area to be planted, which represents a
rise of 1,319.5 thousand hectares. The reduced cost per hectare in comparison to corn,
greater liquidity in the marked and greater resistance to drought are the factors justifying
the replacement of corn by this oleaginous.

3. PRODUCTION ESTIMATES 141.35 million tons
The estimated national production of grains at 141.35 million tons is 4.6% or 6.21
million tons superior to the amount of 135.13 million tons produced in 2008/09 (Table 2).
The estimated production is related to the favorable weather conditions during crop
development. With an increase of only 0.4% in the planting area, the 4.6 increase in
production is result of yield recovery, especially of the first crop corn and soybean, which
in the 2008/09 crop were influenced by the drought in the states of Paran, Rio Grande do
Sul and Mato Grosso do Sul.
We highlight the soybean crop, which shows an increase of 14.0% or 7.99 million
tons in relation to the previous crop, a change to 65.16 million tons. With the confirmation
of the estimated area and favorable climatic conditions, the production of this oleaginous
will be a record one. In the previous crop, production totaled 57.17 million tons. The
beans 1st crop, even with the reduction in the planted area, shows an increase of 8.3 %
(111.1 thousand tons), especially because of the recovery in productivity in the state of
Paran, harmed by the drought in the previous year. Other crops such as cotton, rice andcorn 1st crop presented a decrease in production. Corn reduced in 3.9 % (1.31 million
tons), rice at 4.5% (572.3 thousand tons) and cotton at 1.2% (22.0 thousand tons).

4. CLIMATIC INFLUENCES
In the month of December, the rains were above average in nearly all the
producing regions and more intense in the South East and Center West states. In the
South, the rains favored the flowering and grain filling in the crops and at the west of
Bahia, they were sufficient for the good development of soybean and the implantation of
cotton.
However, the heavy rains associated with high temperatures have favored the
increase of diseases, which has required greater effort for the phytosanitary control in
crops. Besides, the excessive rains delayed the implantation of some crops, harmed the
planting of rice in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and it may have caused damaged to the
harvesting of first crop beans in the states of Paran and So Paulo.

In general, the climatic conditions for this summer crop in 2009/2010 and has been
favorable and record production figures are expected in some regions. On the other hand,
damages and punctual losses occasioned by wind storms, hail storms and floods, or even
droughts such as those occurred in the north part of the state of Minas Gerais, Espirito
Santo and south of Bahia, which may reach significant proportions when they are analyzedat a municipal level.
For the next three months, the forecast shows above average rains in nearly all
Center South regions, with the exception of the entire state of Mato Grosso, in the center
north of Gois, north part of Minas and Espirito Santo, where the rains will be in the
historical average. This condition will maintain the status and it may harm the harvesting
works in some areas. In the Northeast, rains will be below average in a strip in the north
part of the region, which may harm the implementation and development of corn and
beans.
5. CROP EVALUATION
5.1 - COTTON
Due to the calendar of technical advice, the planting in the larger producing states
is intensifying. In the months of October and November, producers dedicated themselves
to the planting of soybean and corn. This way, the area planted with cotton in Brazil, even
with a certain degree of uncertainty, may reach 792.4 thousand hectares, which
represents a reduction of 6.0%. Factors justifying the reduction are the exchange rate
policy, low market prices, and high production costs in relation to other crops.
Area reductions are verified in the entire Center-South Region, especially in the
states of Mato Grosso, Gois and Mato Grosso do Sul, according to Table 4. In Bahia,
data show a small reduction area in relation to the previous crop. There is also a tendency
of reduction in the State of So Paulo and near extinction in Paran. In the states of the

North/Northeast regions, the area and the production of the 2008/09, crops were
considered according to the adopted methodology.
The planting started for the states of So Paulo, Paran and Mato Grosso do Sul
in the second fortnight of October. In the other producing regions such as Mato Grosso,
Gois and the region of Barreiras BA, seeding occurs in November and December and
may be extended until January. The irrigated cotton in the western Bahia is planted in the
months of January and February.
Regarding the production of plume cotton, there is a reduction estimate of 14.8
thousand tons, reaching 1198.9 thousand tons.
According to previous reports, these data are preliminary, considering that the
planting in the main producing regions will be intensified in the second fortnight of
November (after the implantation of soybean and corn).
5.2 - RICE
General Status The rice crop has been increasing productivity, even though the
area expansion has been facing difficulties due to the lack of adequate land for crops and
the fact these lands are located near water sources, which are susceptible to water
harnessing, or derivations for irrigation, since most of the production comes from irrigated
rice. The planting for the 2009/10 crop in Rio Grande do Sul was not concluded due to
unfavorable climatic conditions with excessive rain, floods and torrents. The ideal periodfor establishment of a crop is past and the producer meets difficulties for acquiring short
cycle seeds in order to conclude the seeding, thus avoiding frost that may occur in the
beginning of the fall. In the region is planted with upland rice, the seeding is under way and
it will be extended until the beginning of January. In general, the producers have used a
very good technological package, with reduction in the price for raw materials - especially
fertilizers. The constant use of land (without the crop rotation) is increasing the infestation
of red rice, the CL varieties have not been able to fulfill their mission due to segregation,
and the consequent resistance to the herbicide used to treat this invader.

Planted Area The planted area with rice in the 2009/10 crop will be
around 2.83 million hectares (-2.6%) in relation to the planted area for the 2008/09 crop at
2,909.0 thousand hectares.
Increase/Decrease The reduction in planted areas is especially
occurring for the upland rice, which in most cases is seeded in recently opened areas (first
planting). The greater reductions are in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (10.4 %), Minas
Gerais (6.4 %) and Gois (13.5%). Another relevant factor is the replacement by the
soybean crop, which has more liquidity in the market. The planted area for irrigated rice
that is planted in the South region may have considerable reduction due to excessive rains
and extensive floods in the crops, both in seeded area subjected to replanting and in areas
that have not been seeded. The area reduction so far in the state of RS is at 2.6% and it
tends to increase. The final figures will only be available after the end of floods and the
exhaustion of seething possibility.
Planting System the planting of irrigated rice is mostly done by the
direct planting, minimal planting and pre-germinated planting systems. The Conventional
Planting has been scarcely used and it is only justifiable when the climatic conditions do
not permit a previous soil preparation as it happened in Rio Grande do Sul that will have
30% of conventional planting in this crop. In the state of Santa Catarina, there is the
predominance of the planting system in raised areas, which favor the use of pre-
germinated seeds. However, the upland rice uses the system of direct planting for planted
areas and the conventional planting for areas that have been recently opened. In the
North and Northeast regions, there is a dominance of the traditional conventional planting.
Weather The excessive rains in the South Region both recovered
the water sources for irrigation and harm the crops due to constant flooding, especially in
lower areas and those regions near riverbanks.
Yield - The national average yield expected for this crop must be at
4,248 kg/hectare, a reduction in 1.9 % of the 2008/09 crop. The reduction is considered
normal because the increase of yield in the past crop was result of the record productivity
in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the greatest rice producer in the nation, but the area that
was seeded off their recommended period by the survey, which also contributes for this
reduction.
Production The national rice production for the 2009/10 crop is
estimated at 12,030.2 thousand tons, with a reduction of 4.5% in comparison to the
2008/09 crop at 12,602.5 thousand tons.

Crop stage - the area for irrigated rice is in its final stage of seeding in
the center South region, where this crop reached 90%. Specifically in the South Region,
the delay in seeding is heavier and 5% between the replanting and the normal seeding are
yet to the planted. In Mato Grosso do Sul, the seeding is reaching the end, and in the
regions planting upland rice, it is in the final stage.
Quality of the product to be harvested - The rice quality in Brazil is usually
excellent, due to the use of the studied varieties not only for productivity but also for
cooking. In the irrigated rice, the most planted varieties in this crop are Puit Inta CL, Irga
424, Irga 422, Irga 417, Irga 409, Olismar and Querncia. The varieties producing grains
of the patma, long thin types are the consumer favorites this fact caused upland rice
producers to adopt these type
Market the market prices are near the minimum official prices with
small regional and logistics variations. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, prices vary from
R$ 28.47 to R$ 29.76 for the 50 kg sack and in the state of Mato Grosso the prices for the
60 kg sack of long and thin upland rice are between R$ 29.60 and R$ 30.12.
5.3- CANOLAGeneral Status the planting of Canola in Brazil is still young and the producers
are in stage of acquaintance and adaptation to the techniques demanded by this crop for
the good development and production. The existing planting is located in the south part of
Brazil, most precisely in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paran and Mato Grosso do Sul.
The producers face difficulties in the implantation of this crop due to lack of technical
knowledge about the planting and harvesting. Due to the lack of this knowledge, many of
them give up this crop because they do not reach the expected productivity. Another
faced problem is related to the seed all of the hybrids planted in Brazil are imported and
acquired at relatively high prices.
Planted area the canola planted area for the 2009 crop is 30.917
thousand hectares, distributed in three states of the federation. The largest area is in Rio
Grande do Sul with 23,000 hectares; Mato Grosso do Sul with 1,850 hectares and Paran
with 6,067 hectares. The seeding period was concluded in the month of June, and it was
extended due to the drought in the seeding time.
Planting System The Canola crop is implanted by the system of
direct planting. Small adaptations have been made in the existing planters, which are

necessary for enabling the seeding over straw. The distance between lines must be the
smallest possible for the propriety machinery.
Increase/decrease - The planted area has been nearly unaltered, and
there has only been a rotation of producers.
Weather The ideal weather for the canola is similar to the wheat,
except that the canola does not support heavy frost after germination and in the flowering
stage. In the past crop, the weather was helpful for a normal productivity and a harvest
without significant losses.
Yield The average Yield expected for this crop is 1210 kg/hectare.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul had 1190 kg/hectare while the initial was 1360 kg/hectare.
Production The expected national production for the 2009 crop is
37410 thousand tons.
Crop Stage - All producing states have concluded the canola
harvesting.
Quality of the harvested product - the harvested product presented
excellent quality, due to the climatic conditions and the fact the product does not
depreciate during the harvesting stage because of the weather, even though the losses in
quantity are frequent. The production total is destined to the companies fomenting theCanola production by providing seeds, raw materials and the commitment of acquiring the
total production.
Market The market is favorable, with prices similar to the soybean
market price. The price for the 60 kg sack is around R$ 43.00.

In this current survey, the planted area with first crop edible beans is estimated in
1343.6 thousand hectares, a reduction of 4.5% or 63.4 thousand hectares. With the
exception of So Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, all states producing this leguminous
presented area reduction. This reduction was caused by the trade performance in the past
crop, with prices below the expected.
The rains in the Center-South region benefited the crops and provide the
necessary humidity for the good development of water beans crops. The weather forecast
predicts excessive rains in the next trimester, which may influence the performance and
production quality during the harvesting.
In the state of Paran that harvested 27.9% of the national production in the
previous crop, there is a forecast of area reduction, currently estimated in 323.6 thousand
hectares. The low prices in the market have been negatively influencing the plantingstages of this crop. In the survey period, 15% of the planted area had been harvested and
the rest was in the stages of flowering, fruiting and maturation.
Despite the area reduction, the state of Paran expected production of edible
beans for the 2009/10 crop is 522.9 thousand tons, which represents an increase of 39.4%
above the total harvested in the 2008/09 crop. The expectation for a normal yield for this
crop justifies the results, since the performance in the past crop was below the historical
average due to the adverse climatic conditions in the past crop, such as heavy drought.
In the state of Minas Gerais, second largest producer of beans 1st crop (18.2% of
the total harvested in the previous crop), there is an estimate for reduction of 7.1% in
relation to the 2008/09 crop. The low market prices and risk of losses in the maturation
and harvesting stages are factors justifying this reduction. The planting of cores bean
dominates the State of Minas Gerais at over 90% of the area.
So Paulo, opposite to other states, shows an increase of 20% of the edible bean
1st crop planted area. The excessive rains harming the crops and the South East of So
Paulo have worried the producers. The excess of water favors the spread of diseases and
hampers the necessary applications of fungicide for control. The planting of this first crop
normally occurs in the months of July and August.
The producers are at about 90% of harvested areas and the remaining in the
stage of maturation. The domain-producing region of beans shows a decrease in yield and
production quality. This reduction would be result of excessive rains in the region.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the weather conditions caused a delay in
planting and development of crops and difficulties to farmers. The planting was nearly

until mid-December according to the region.
For the edible beans 2nd and 3rd crops, due to the planting calendar and the
methodology applied in the estimates, the planting areas of the previous crop were
repeated by applying the average performance in the last five years, discarding the
abnormal years and adding technological gain.
Taking into consideration the three crops, it is estimated that the total area is
4084.4 thousand hectares, 1.5% last than the previous crop. The Brazilian production
must be 3645.3 thousand tons, an increase of 4.4% in relation to the past crop.
5.5 - CORN 1st CROP
General Status - The implantation of the 1st crop corn started in the Center-south
region in July 2009 and the conclusion of planting is expected for the month of January
2010. The corn crop presents highly technical level and the yield has been experimenting
relevant increases in the past crops. So far, the weather has been favorable in most
producing regions; there have been no delays in seeding, normal vegetative development
and flowering.
Planted Area The planted area with first crop corn 2009/10 will
be at 8,281.0 thousand hectares, a variation of 10.7% less than the planted area for the
first Crop 2008/09 which was 9,217.5 thousand hectares.

Increase/Decrease the prevision for reduction in the planted area for
this first crop must be from at 989.5 thousand hectares. The reduction is related to the
volume of this product in the market and the prices that are below the expected by the
producers. However, the area reduction does not mean a reduction in the national
production, because the favorable weather conditions in the South Region lead to anormal production.
Planting System the direct planting is the most common system
utilized in corn crops, especially for large areas. The conventional system is still dominant
among small producers, even though there is a rise in the adoption of direct planting.
Weather the rains are favoring the corn crops - they demand high
humidity throughout the cycle, especially in the stages of flowering and grain filling. In the
South Region, there has been great weather condition for the crop development andforecasts for excellent harvesting, a different story from the previous crop, which presented
huge losses due to the drought. In other producing regions, the weather conditions for the
corn first crop are also optimal.
Yield the average yield foreseen for this first crop will be at 3,906
kg/hectare, 7.6% more than the 2008/09 crop. The increase is result of the greater
productivity expected for the Center-South region, which was frustrated due to adverse
climatic conditions in the past crop especially by the bad distribution of rains and theoccurrence of drought periods in the critical stage of crop development.
Production The expected production for the Corn 1st crop 2009/10 is
at 32,347.3 thousand tons - an increase of 3.9%.
Crop Development The planted areas in the Center-South
present excellent development due to regular precipitations so far. The development
stages range from the vegetative growth to grain depending on the considered region. In
other regions, the stages present satisfactory development and they range from seeding to
vegetative growth.
Quality of the product to be harvested The prevision is for the
harvesting of a fine quality product due the technological package used by producers,
quality seeds and technical assistance.
Market the corn market is in stage of price recovery in the Center-
South region; however, prices in the Center-West states are still below the official
minimum. The prices in the South Region are between R$ 14.60 and R$ 16.60 and in the
Center-West Region between R$ 8.00 and R$ 15.00.

5.6 - SOYBEAN
With the planting nearly defined, the survey performance between the 15th and
18th of December 2009 shows a planted area of 23.06 million hectares, which
corresponds to an increase of 6.1% or 1.32 million hectares superior to the 2008/2009
crop, which presented a planted area of 21.70 million hectares. This result shows thesecond largest cultivated area with the oleaginous. The record remains with the
2004/2005 crop with 23.3 million hectares.
The national production is estimated at 65.16 million tons and it represents an
increase of 14% (7.99 million tons) on the volume of 57.17 million tons produced in
2008/09 (Table 20). Regarding the yield (kilos per hectare), it was considered the average
of the last five years, discarding the abnormal crops and adding the technologicaladvance. So, the predicted area was confirmed with the favorable climatic conditions for
the crops, which has happened so far in the production may be superior to the total
estimated.
The increase has been noticed in all states producing the oil seed, especially
Paran where the plannedgrowth of 313.3 thousand hectares, followed by Mato Grosso at
311.2 thousand hectares, Rio Grande do Sul at 159.4 thousand hectares and the state of
Gois with an increase of 161.5 thousand hectares.
The main factors for the rise in the soybean planting by the producers are lower
cost per hectare in comparison to the corn, its main competitor, low prices for corn, greater
liquidity, a crop more resistant to drought and the reduction cost in comparison to corn.
The planting is expected to finish at the end of December, due to excessive rains
in the states in the South in region - especially in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In the
states of the Center-West region, especially in Mato Grosso that is the greatest oleaginous
producer, the anticipation of rains (it was already raining in the region at the beginning ofSeptember) enabled the planting by mid-September and the situation will permit the

harvesting in the beginning of January and the planting of the second crop of corn in a
more appropriate time.
The National Institute of Meteorology INMET expects above average rains and
the weather forecast for the next three months (January, february and march 2010) will
benefit the crops, which did not happen in the previous crop when the long drought caused
substantial damage to corn and soybean crops in the South region and at Mato Grosso do
Sul. The rains occurred into the month of December benefits the development and growing
of plants for the planted crop.
The highlight remains with the State of Mato, who leads the ranking of national
production with an estimated volume of 18.65 million tonnes in an area estimated at 6.14
million hectares, followed by Paran (13.28 million tons) and Rio Grande do Sul, where the
research shows a production of 8.76 million tons.
The fourth crop survey performed by Conab shows a National Soybean Production
of 65.16 million tons for the 2009/10 harvest, representing an increase of 598.1 thousand
tons in relation to the last survey and 14% (eight million tons) in relation to the 2000/09
crop.
These results are compatible with the market expectations (domestic and foreign)
for a significant increase in the national soybean production for the 2009/10 season,
gaining ground from cotton and corn crops due to greater liquidity and profits soybeans
present in comparison to summer crops.
With the confirmation of the current levels for the Brazilian Production, the exports
are estimated at 25.9 million tons and the crushing at 32.9 million tons. It is expected a
recovery in the final stock levels. For the crushing, this result represents an increase of
15% in relation to the previous season.
Part of this increase is destined to answer additional demand for vegetable oil, due
an increase of 4% to 5% in the use of vegetable oil in mineral diesel within the scope of
the National Production Program and the use of Biodiesel PNPB.

General Status the wheat harvesting is concluded, with satisfactory results in Rio
Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais. In other regions, the climatic conditions were
unfavorable to the crops, resulting in loss of production and product quality. So Paulo
was the most harmed state and a quite reduced amount of the product may be used for
bread making.
Planted area the wheat planted area for the 2009/2010 is 2428.0 thousand
hectares, distributed in three regions and eight states. There are also Rio Grande do Sul
with 1299.6 thousand hectares (35.4%), Santa Catarina at 117 hectares (4.8%), So
Paulo at 61.3 thousand hectares (2.5%), Mato Grosso do Sul at 42.4 thousand hectares
(1.75%), Minas Gerais at 22.8 thousand hectares (0.94%); Gois at 22.6 thousand
hectares (0.93%) and the Federal District at 2.5 thousand hectares (0.10%). The seed
period was finished in the month of July, and partially surpassed the period technically
recommended for the establishment of the crop.
Planting System The wheat crop in Brazil is almost totally implanted by the
direct planting system, more than 90% of the planted area. In the states of Minas Gerais
and Gois, most of the crops are irrigated.
Gain/reduction The increase in the wheat planted area in the states of Gois
(18.3%), Minas Gerais (12.3%), and Paran (15.5%) appears to be expressive and they
are compensated by the reduction in the area in these states: So Paulo (23%), DistritoFederal (13.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.3%), an average reduction of 1.3 % from the
previous crop. Regarding the production, the estimate reduction is 14.6% due to climatic
adversities. The excessive rain prevented the producers from applying the adequate plant
health treatment, exposed to attacks from diseases.
Weather The wheat crop requires a weather variation different from most grain
cultures. In the initial stage, the demand is for low temperatures, with support to moderate
frosts that assist the vegetative cycle. In the flowering and a grain stages, the preferenceis for a climate with low humidity and higher temperatures, which reduce the incidence of
diseases and favor the quality of grains. In this crop, the weather was not favorable,
especially in the states of So Paulo, Gois, Distrito Federal and Paran that presented
heavy rains in the final stage of the vegetative cycle. At Rio Grande do Sul, the weather
was favorable until the harvesting and only harmful in the final stage.
Productivity The national average productivity expected for this crop is 2.070
kg/hectare, 15.7% less than the productivity in the past crop. The states with the betterproduction perspectives are: Minas Gerais has harvested 100% of the area with a
productivity of 4,303 kg/hectare of good quality product and Rio Grande do Sul that due to

the fact the crop was seeded later and the presence of favorable weather, will reach an
average productivity of 2,100 kg/ha. The greatest losses were at Paran, So Paulo and
Federal District.
Production The expected national production for the 2009/2010 crop is 5,026.3
thousand tons, generated by the average performance of 2,070 kg/hectar
Crop stage Harvesting concluded.
Quality of Product to be harvested the product quality is hampered in most of the
producing states due to excessive rains in the final third part of crop cycle. The producing
state with greater losses was So Paulo, which presented a low quality product. In
Paran, 25% of the production is considered low standard and improper for bread
production. The states harvesting the best quality products were Minas Gerais and Rio
Grande do Sul. One of the factors contributing for the improvement in quality was the
utilization of varieties bread class, such as Razes, Quartzo, Marfim, CD117 and
Guamirim.
Market The wheat market is a seller and there is still product from the 2008/09
crop for sale. The commercialization of the production for the 2009/10 is developing
slowly due to lack of purchasers. Prices vary according to the region: Gois and Distrito
Federal, from R$ 31.45/60 kg; South Region, R$ 21.62/60 kg; Paran R$ 24.52/60kg and
Minas Gerais, R$ 31.45/60kg.
