SituationThe pretty village of Allington lies in beautiful rollingWiltshirecountryside, just under three miles NorthWest of the historic markettown of Chippenham. The surrounding area is characterised by agenerous peppering of attractive stone hamlets and villages, whichfeature many of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s architectural legacies, following the introduction of the GreatWestern Railway.Chippenham has subsequently developed from its origins as a markettown into a popular destination for commuters. It provides theultimate combination of a quintessentially rural environment withexcellent access to transport links to both London and Bristol.

The area is especially sought after by families on account of the widevariety of schools within a comfortable commuting distance. Theseinclude prep schools such as Heywood School, Kingswood andBeaudesert and secondary schools such as Stonar, St Mary’s Calne,Westonbirt and Marlborough.

HistoryThe earliest record of a house on the site ofBolehyde Manor dates back approximately700 years. Deeds bearing the name ‘Thomasde Bolehide’ lead researchers to believe that atenant of this name occupied a house on thesite during the reign of Edward I. Themanor house is thought to have origins inthe early 16th century, however, the listingpoints to the current building being of 17thcentury construction. It is believed that theproperty was initially acquired by RichardSnell, a steward of the Abbot of Glastonbury, who bought it with monies he was allegedlyholding for the Abbott after the Abbot wasexecuted for failing to conform to the King’swishes during the Dissolution of theMonasteries. The manor was bought in1635 by the Gale family, of yeoman stock, who then held it in direct descent until 1927.

Little is known about the layout of theoriginal house, however, the Gales weregreat builders and undoubtedly carried outsubstantial alternations. Several structuraladditions bear the initials of variousmembers of the family. It is thought thatthey were also responsible for the re-planning of the approaches to the manor, building the paired stone gatehouses eitherside of the main entrance from the lane andintroducing the pair of summerhouses, which flank the area now referred to as theLongWalk.

DescriptionBolehyde Manor is a commanding GradeII* Listed building with the history of theages knitted into its very fabric but with aheart that is unreservedly designed aroundboth family living and formal entertaining.

Passing between the two stone 18th centurygatehouses and sweeping around in front ofan immaculately laid lawn, separated fromthe road by a Cotswold stone wall, the firstglimpse of Bolehyde Manor is every bit asimpressive as one would anticipate. Threegables form the main structure of the houseand the eye is drawn to a projecting squarestone porch with its attractive balustradeand guardian stone busts.

The property is steeped in character fromthe heavy oak front door to the mullianwindows and time-smoothed flag stonefloors in the principle reception rooms.Large open fire places stand opposite oneanother at either end of these two substantialrooms, suggesting that originally they mayhave been combined in the form of a largebanqueting or entertaining hall. There is asuperb wine store to the left of the fireplacein the reception hall. Dark oak panellingfeatures in a number of rooms andbeautifully compliments several of the laterfeatures, such as the ornate carved staircasethat acts as a central focus in the receptionhall. Accessed via both the reception halland kitchen, the courtyard garden providesan extension of the entertaining spaceduring the summer months.

On the first floor the master bedroom suiteoccupies prime position on the south sideof the house with wonderful far reachingviews from both windows. There are fourfurther bedrooms on the first floor. On thesecond floor there are three bedrooms. These have a separate heating and hot watersystem and can therefore be shut off whennot in use. There are three more bedroomsin the annexe.

Gardens and GroundsThe captivating gardens at Bolehyde havebeen carefully restored and wonderfullymaintained by the current owners.Immaculate topiary, hedging and attractivestone walling define individual pockets ofcharacter like rooms of varying moods. Itis a veritable succession of secret gardensconnected by formal walks, accessed fromthe east through wrought iron gates andflanked by stone summerhouses whichmark the original approach to the house.

The natural beauty of the gardens isapparent in various themes from theMediterranean courtyard, with itsimpressive frame of tall yew hedging, to thegeometric design of the well orderedEnglish kitchen garden. A quieter moodmay be enjoyed in the peaceful seclusion of

the garden referred to as ‘Regents Park’which is laid to lawn and enclosed byhedges, whilst the plum orchard offersbountiful ingredients for autumnal cookery.

The enchanting ‘lady’s garden’ ischaracterised by the stone statue of anItalian lady, thought to have beenintroduced to the garden in the 17thcentury,which is positioned as if gazingwistfully though a window in the yewhedge out towards the supposed site of aformer Roman villa.A fragment of themoat, which used to extend across thefront of the manor house, is still visible onthe south easterly side and has been fittedwith a pump by the current owners tomaintain the clarity of the water. To thenorth east lies an area ideal for outdoorentertaining and adventure with a tennis

court, swimming pool and tree housecomplex. There is a well laid out andproductive formalVegetable garden.

For keen gardeners, the potting shed andmagnificent adjoining green house providethe ideal haven for winter cutting andnurturing. This further demonstrates thatthe gardens have been designed for all-year-round enjoyment.

LandLand used as organic farmland. The landcomprises approximately 73.61 acres(excluding gardens) of mainly pasture andarable. This is served by a range of usefulFarm Buildings and a Range of Stablessituated to the north ofThe Manor.
