Evaluation of post-matric optionsAssessing their Grade 11 results and performance empower learners to make better decisions about their post-school direction, including about which options are available to them, what courses to apply for and where. Learners should start working out their ‘points’ for higher education entrance from Grade 10. This means they should thoroughly research the courses they want to study and the results they need for their application to be accepted. In Grade 11, learners are then able to monitor how realistic their aspirations are and where they need to do more work, which will reduce uncertainty when applying.

While Matric is often viewed as the year, Grade 11 learners and

their parents need to be aware that Matric is not a year-long event,

but rather a two-year long project. Throughout one’s school career,

Grade 12 (Matric) is viewed as the ultimate year, the year in which

you have to account for what you learned in the decade before, and

the year whose results will follow you for the rest of your life. But

what learners and parents don’t realise, is that Grade 11 can arguably

be considered as important, if not more so, than one’s final year, an

education expert says.“There are at least five reasons why Grade 11

learners should take this year very seriously, and put as much effort

into it as they will next year,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of

school year is a significant one because it provides these options:

Matric exams:a two-year project

Time testingIf you keep good track of how long it takes you to master different kinds of work, that will allow you to draw up an accurate study plan next year. Knowing your pace of work means you will be able to revise with enough time allocated right from the start, so that you don’t run out of days before you run out of work to revise.

Exam focusTeachers set Grade 11 exams to mimic the format and complexity of Grade 12. That means that taking your Grade 11 exams seriously will help you understand how you are doing and how ready you will be for your final exams. It helps you to work out where you need to apply more focus. This year’s exams provide a measure of where you are, and should be treated as part of your preparation for your finals.

ExperimentingGrade 11 allows some time for experimenting before crunch-time arrives. Learn new study methods and stress management methods, and experiment with things you have not done before, like study groups and mind maps. Finding a variety of study techniques and approaches that work for you will allow you to enter Grade 12 with a revision system that will make you perform at your best.

“Matric does not start in your last year of school. If you start applying your mind to your final exams right now and take the long view coupled with a strategy, you will be able to deliver your absolute best when you sit for your finals in a year and a half ’s time, and significantly improve your chances of being able to follow your dream post-Matric.”

ItalyTake a (basil) leaf out of Italian lunches by whipping up some lunchbox pizza rolls – simply roll

out bread dough or use ready-made pizza

bases. Spread over a thin layer of tomato pasta sauce or pesto, then sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese and dried herbs over. Roll up and bake until golden and oozing. Cut slices of pizza roll for a flavourful lunchbox snack. For mini pizza rolls, use white bread and flatten it with a rolling pin before adding the rest of the ingredients.

UkraineTake inspiration from a classic Ukrainian dish, blini, for a unique break time snack. These wholesome

pancakes are served with smoked salmon

or berries and cream cheese. Mix together cream cheese with a little honey and a drop of vanilla, then spread onto a pancake or flapjack. Top with thinly sliced strawberries or mixed berries and sandwich together (or roll up if you’re using pancakes). Wrap them tightly in cling wrap to make sure they stay fresh and soft until break time.

GreeceFresh, punchy flavours abound in Mediterranean lunchboxes. Tomato keftedes, a crispy tomato

fritter, is a seriously delicious local

delicacy and great to make in advance for school lunchboxes. Mix together chopped tomato, onion, parsley, crushed feta and half a teaspoon of baking powder with enough flour to form a firm dough. Roll into balls and refrigerate for half an hour, then fry in hot oil until crispy. When cooled, pack into a Ziploc bag, along with a small tub of mayo for dipping.

FinlandRiisipuuro, or rice pudding, is a traditional Finnish dish that’s super easy to make and, if packed

in an airtight container, makes for a great

lunchbox treat. Cook a cup of rice in milk until it has a soft and creamy consistency (adding milk when needed), then add a small knob of butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Top with some fresh or stewed mixed berries. Once cooled, pack into a small container, along with a spoon for a nutritious and filling treat.

Already out of ideas for your kids’ lunchboxes, although school has just started again? Why not shake things up and take the lead from a few international flavours? There’s a whole world of lunchbox fillings to explore out

there, packed with interesting, foreign flair and delicious combinations.

BrazilThe cuisine of Brazil is as varied as it is delicious, with African and American influences. A popular

Brazilian street food that also

works well for lunchboxes is elote, a boiled mielie coated with an array of delicious ingredients. Simply boil a mielie or sweetcorn until tender. Mix together mayo, grated cheese, butter, salt and sour cream, then spread over the mielie once it’s cooled. Wrap in cling film and pack as a yummy, healthy snack.

TurkeyTurkish cuisine is a delicious combination of Asian and Mediterranean foods. A common savoury treat,

borek, is easy to make in advance for

school lunchboxes. Mix together chopped boiled spinach with crumbled feta and some extra virgin olive oil, before spreading the mixture out onto a sheet of phyllo or puff pastry, and rolling up. Cut into smaller rolls and bake until crisp and golden.

DIY beauty recipes to heal chapped lips

Lips don’t contain oil glands, which means that they’re even more susceptible to drying out and cracking than other parts of the skin. Lack of moisture in the air during the colder months only exacerbates the problem (another sigh).

To help heal your lips and get you back to your old kissable self, we’ve compiled a list of 5 nourishing DIY beauty recipes – scrubs, salves and balms – specially formulated to breathe life back into cold-battered lips.

Ingredients• ½ tsp maple syrup (or honey)• ½ tsp finely ground brown sugar• 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil• 2 tsp finely ground coffee• Dash of cinnamon or pumpkin spice (optional)• 1–2 drops of peppermint essential oil (optional)

Ingredients• 1 tsp of coconut oil• 1 tbsp of honey

DirectionsMassage on and around lips, and leave mixture on for 5 minutes before wiping off.The coconut oil will restore the lipid layer on the skin, while the honey acts as a moisturising and antibacterial agent.

Ingredients• 1 tsp coconut oil• 1 tsp matcha powder

Directions• Mix ingredients together and apply to

lips. Rub in circular motions for 10–15 seconds and wash off.

3It can be hard to stay “kissable” during winter. Winter

weather brings cold weather and with cold weather comes dry skin and (sigh) chapped lips.

Directions• Mix all ingredients together in a clean bowl, making a

thick paste. Add spices or essential oil, if desired. Scoop mixture into clean container.

• To use, scoop a bit of the mixture onto a fingertip and then gently scrub the top and bottom lips to remove dry, chapped skin.

TennisRuben Joubert het aan die Syndergy Cup-toernooi deelgeneem vir tennis. Dit is ‘n interprovinsiale toernooi wat bestaan uit, onder andere, Noord-Kaap en WP.

Ruben het deelgeneem en Boland 0/12 verteenwoordig. Hy het 16 van sy 20 wedstryde gewen gedurende die toernooi. Boland het ‘n brons medalje in hulle afdeling gewen.

Verder het Ruben ook gedurende die vakansie in Bloemfontein aan die TSA One Ranking Toernooi deelgeneem. Hy het algeheel 15de (individueel) uit 32 spelers geëindig en in die dubbels en gemeng beide tot die kwarteinderondte gevorder.

Graad 4 besoek Houtbaai en Robeiland Die Graad 4 leerders het Houtbaai en Robeiland besoek. Die bootrit was ‘n hoogtepunt.

Redenaars van formatWA Joubert is ‘n skool wat leerders blootstelling gee op vele terreine. Op hierdie foto verskyn ‘n groep leerders wat deelgeneem het aan ons eie Redenaars-kompetisie. DIt geskied in samewerking met Carolina van der Westhuizen van ”Kansvatter Redenaars”.

Jufrou Elsa van der Wath en Juffrou Elzanne Visser help die leerders met die voorbereiding van hul toesprake. Dit was ‘n hoogtepunt vir hierdie leerders, van wie sommige vir die eerste keer voor ‘n gehoor hulle sê moes sê. Dit leer die kinders baie oor openbare optrede en die klem val ook baie op navorisng en die voorbereiding van die toesprake. Sommige van hulle gaan ook aan verdere kompetisies deelneem. Ons is baie trots op hierdie leerders.

NetbalBaie geluk aan Renezia Andrews (o/12) wat in die Paarl netbalspan opgeneem is. Sy neem op 19 April deel aan die Wynland Sentraalproewe by HMS.

Synergy Cup in KaapstadDie Maart Vakansie het Alica Bester, Herman Hartung en Willem de Waal vir die Boland 0/11 tennisspan deelgeneem aan die Synergy Cup in Kaapstad.

Dit is ‘n nasionale kompetisie waarin hulle 3, as lede van die Boland Nadalspan, deelgeneem het teen ander provinsiale spanne. Die Boland Nadalspan eindig derde in hulle afdeling nadat hulle konstant uitstekende tennis gespeel het en hulle gedrag op en van die baan af almal betrokke trots gemaak het. Baie geluk.

Boland Underwater HockeyThe following learners from Paarl Girls’ High were selected for the respective Boland Underwater Hockey teams. They took part at the Junior National tournament in Johannesburg from 10-12 March 2016. The Boland U/19A girls received a bronze medal, the U/15 girls a silver medal and Emma Gous received a silver medal for girls U/14 fin-swimming. The Boland team were placed second overall, after the Gauteng team.

A Midsummer night’s dreamThe Grade 9 learners presented A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 8 to 10 March 2016. We saw extraordinary drama talent amongst them.

Academic performanceWe are very grateful to announce that Girls’ High received an award from WCED for Overall Excellence in Academic Performance: Grade 9 in 2015. Die toekenning vir Uitnemendheid in Akademiese Prestasie in Wiskunde: Graad 9, met die vierde hoogste puntetotaal in die Wes-Kaap, is ook ontvang. Akademiese uitnemendheid bly ons passie en ons sal aanhou ‘n omgewing skep sodat elke leerder haar volle potensiaal kan bereik.

AtletiekGalin Cleophas, atletiekster van Hoërskool Dirkie Uys, is in die Wes-Kaapspan opgeneem en gaan in hoogspring deelneem by die SA-byeenkoms. Hy het ook by die kleure-atletiekbyeenkoms die rekord in 110m hekkies S.O19, wat al vir 40 jaar gestaan het, verbeter.

Kaskar-wedrenneHoërskool Dirkie Uys se jaarlikse kaskar-wedrenne tussen die graadgroepe was soos gewoonlik weer vet pret. Hier is die Graad 12B’s, wat die senior wenners was, in aksie.

Nuwe ruimtes in die La Rochelle KoshuisDie La Rochelle Koshuis, die Grande Dame in Art Deco-styl, het vanjaar ‘n ontrimpeling ondergaan.

Die langverwagte opgradering van die badkamers het begin met die twee hoofbadkamers wat oorgedoen is. Die ander badkamers sal mettertyd ook vernuwing ondergaan.

Die TV-kamer lyk ook splinternuut, nadat die houtmuurpanele verwyder, die mure geverf is en splinternuwe meubels, asook ‘n klein kombuisie, toegevoeg is.

Aan die agterkant van die koshuis het ons ‘n akkerboom verloor, maar in die plek daarvan staan ‘n spuitfonteintjie in die middel van die groen grasperk.

Die tuin in die vierkant van die koshuis word met groot liefde versorg en bied ‘n heerlike rusplekkie na ‘n besige dag. Ons is voorwaar trots op ons mooi meisiekoshuis!

Bazaar ‘n reuse suksesDie Blackies het vir die eerste keer in meer as twee dekades wees ‘n bazaar aangebied. DIt het almal se stoutste verwagtinge oortref.

AtletiekOns atlete het briljant presteer by die Boland en Wes-Kaap byeenkomste. Geluk ook aan Karlene Lambrechts en Maré-Louisa Koegelenberg met jul goeie prestasies by die SA’s!

Mnr. en Mej. Hugenote – in ‘n ander klas!Baie geluk aan Bejamin Visser en Elzaan le Roux wat aangewys is as mnr. en mej. Hugenote 2016.

TSA Tennis neem kennis van HugenoteTalitha en Suzaan Jansen van Vuuren en Paul Coetzee het die vakansie deelgeneem aan die baie bekende TSA One Ranking Platinum Toernooi. Elkeen het briljant presteer. Suzaan en haar dubbelsmaat, Nicole Viljoen, het die O/16 afdeling gewen. Suzaan is ook 9de op die O/16 ranglys en onder die top 8 in die gemengde afdeling. Talitha is 5de op O/14 ranglys (enkels). Paul en Talitha het tweede gekom in die dubbels en ook die gemengde dubbels.

SA Fietsry op sy besteAshleigh het vir sewe dae in PE aan die SA Baan Fietsry Kampionskap deel geneem en talle medaljes gewen: 4 goud, twee silwer, en een brons. Sy het een nuwe SA rekord losgery en die SA Titel vir die Omniun Kampioenskap ontvang. Die kompetisie was ongelooflik sterk. Nou hou ons duim vas dat sy volgende jaar sal kwalifiseer vir die Junior Worlds-kampioenskappe.

Emma swem die goues los!Emma Crous het vanaf 1 tot 3 April aan die SA Level 1 Swemkampioenskap deelgeneem by UWK swembad, waar 37 klubs meegeding het. Sy het vier Goue medaljes (200m Vryslag en 50m, 100m en 200m Rugslag) en een silwer medalje (100m Vryslag) verower.

Paasfees lekkerte!Die leerlingraad deel paaseiers aan kinders uit.

O.19A-Krieketspan wen Krieket Derby teen Klein NederburgDie onlangse derby het die volgende uitslag opgelewer: Klein Nederburg teken 120/10 en New Orleans teken 121/5 aan. NOSS wen met 6 paaltjies.

Motivering by MatriekoueraandMe. Oppelt en Reuben Riffel, die beroemde sjef en oudleerder van New Orleans Sekondêr, ruil resepte uit.

Gimmie slinger spies verder as SA rekordJana van Schalkwyk het by die afgelope Wes-Kaap Atletiekkampioenskappe die spiesgooi vir Dogters o.15 met ‘n afstand van 49,71m gewen. Hierdie gooi van Jana is verder as die ou SA rekord. Gimnasium is baie trots op jou.

Varsity atletiek Baie geluk aan die HJS-manne wat gisteraand deelgeneem het aan die Varsity atletiek by Coetzenburg Stellenbosch.

HJS het in die in die skole aflosspan deelgeneem en eerste gekom in ‘n tyd van 42.6 sec.

WP-ligaLukas van der Watt het op 9 Maart 2016 in Groenpunt-stadion aan een van die WP-ligabyeenkomste deelgeneem. Voor die byeenkoms was Lukas se persoonlike beste hoogte alreeds 'n indrukwekkende 4,90 m. Met sy tweede sprong in die kompetisie seil hy oor 4,95 m en oortref daarmee sy persoonlike beste poging. Hy plaas toe die lat op 5,02 m en misluk net-net met sy eerste twee spronge, maar met sy derde poging gaan hy met gemak oor, sodat hy nou met 'n SA-skolerekord kan spog. Lukas se groot droom is om volgende jaar in Amerika te gaan studeer en nog groter hoogtes te bereik met sy paalspring. Ons hou vir jou duimvas, Lukas!

Tweekamp SA’s Die Boishaaiers wat vir Boland aan Tweekamp SA's in Bloemfontein deelgeneem het.UitslaeSeuns o.15: 20e Kruger, AlexanderSeuns o.17: 4e Bruwer, Francois, 6e Kruger, William, 29e Strauss, Werner Daar is ongeveer 50 deelnemers in elke ouderdomsgroep.

Aksie Netbal ITP’s

Graad 9 leerder Thea Swart het van 28 tot 31 Maart deelgeneem aan die Aksie Netbal ITP’s en het WP o.15 behaal. Sy is opgeneem in die SA span wat aan die Indoor World Cup gaan deelneem in Junie 2017. Hulle speel teen Australië, NZ, Engeland en Indië. Baie geluk Thea en alle sterkte!

Wiskunde-toekenningDie Vereniging vir Afrikaanse Wiskunde-onderwysers (VAW) is ‘n projek van Solidariteit Helpende Hand. Die VAW bied ondersteuning aan Afrikaanse Wiskunde-onderwysers in die vorm van kongresse en seminare.

Die VAW het ‘n ondersoek geloods na die Wiskunde-uitslae van Matriekleerders.

Hulle bevinding was dat 31% van alle Wiskunde-onderskeidings kom van slegs 13% van die skole waar onderskeidings in dié vak behaal is..

Die ontleding toon duidelik dat Afrikaanse skole buitengewoon goed presteer in Wiskunde. Op grond van die getal Wiskunde-onderskeidings behaal, was 8 uit die 20 beste skole Afrikaanse skole.

Hoërskool Gimnasium Paarl het ‘n toekenning ontvang as een van hierdie beste Afrikaanse skole in Wiskunde in ons land.
