‘A lot done, more to do’ was once the election slogan of a certain Bertie Ahern-led political party, with the man himself looking extremely pensive in the posters that doubtless stayed up on the

street light and electricity poles long after the election. The only similarity between that and Bohemians is the slogan as far as

I’m concerned and it’s how I felt while cracking open a celebratory beer in recognition of well orchestrated and much needed win in Dundalk. Getting that first win was vital but to do via a penalty, in a ground where we’ve been handed our arse with last minute spot-kicks against us in recent seasons, was most satisfactory and hopefully acted as a springboard to get our campaign going. I’ve no idea how we did in Waterford, the programme having gone to print before that match so hopefully we added to our points tally and continued the steady move away from the league anchor-tenants, who are up next in Dalymount by coincidence.

‘A lot done, more to do’ can also be applied to the Dalymount redevelopment, where the announcement that an architect-led design team will begin to formulate a look for the new Dalymount was very much welcome. With a potential 2025 completion date mooted, the ball is definitely moving and hopefully soon we can watch as the new stadium begins to rise in Phibsboro and settle into a brand new, modern facility that will stand for many more generations of Bohemians.

Chris Brien’s retirement, strangely announced on 1 April which threw most people I’d say, was greeted with shock and surprise but in light of his achievements over two terms as president and his role in the Finance director’s chair during the bad years a decade ago, he deserves to step aside content that the club he leaves behind is much healthier, in every respect, then the one he inherited. Thanks for all your work Chris, the pipe and slippers are deserved.

Tonight we welcome Liam Buckley, his backroom team and players to Dalymount Park for tonight’s

SSE Airtricity League encounter. Due to production deadlines I am writing these notes in advance of this weekend’s games.

Sligo have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season and have looked impressive so far this campaign. They have a nice balance of experience and some talented young players coming through at the Showgrounds which bodes well for the future. Games between both sides are always difficult and generally very close affairs. Sligo will have ambitions on building on last season and will no doubt will provide a tough examination for us, coming to

alymount with real confidenceAs mentioned above I cannot reference our

last game away to Waterford so it is in that context that I refer to our last two games since my previous notes ahead of the St. Patrick’s game.

After the defeat against Pats I referred to the fine margins we have e perienced in our defeats so far this season. The same could have been said for our win in Dundalk where we came out on the right side of the result - a result which could have very easily gone the other way. The point is that we have not been a million miles off despite not playing at our best e hope the in ection of confidence provided by a win in Oriel will lead to better performances and by extension improved results. We will improve as the season goes on and we will get more consistency in our performances which is what we will require especially coming into a congestion period with six games in a three week period.

The attitude of the players has been excellent and we are all working very hard to get better. It’s great to see the younger pro s adapt to the step up to the first team environment and the energy and quality they have brought to the team. Again I have no doubt that some of them will make the transition to first team this year with the quality they have. It is also a pleasing to see some of the long term injuries return to training. Conor Levingston played 60 minutes in a recent friendly versus St. Pat’s and also Promise Omochere is training now on a full time basis which means he is closer to return to playing competitive games. Also back to light training is Stephen Mallon who picked

up an unfortunate metatarsal injury in pre-season. Stephen is a number of weeks away from playing but is making great progress and working extremely hard, doing everything right in order get back playing and making an impact at the club.

News this week of plans that have been put forward by Leinster Rugby for a proof of concept test event to assess the use of rapid antigen testing in a permitted live crowd of up to 2,000 fans at the RDS can only be good news for sport and the eventual return of supporters to our grounds in a safe and Covid-19 compliant manner. These are important first steps that will hopefully show the wider sports and entertainment industry that events can take place and an eventual return of supporters to games and to some sort of normality.

Enjoy the game

The news that the Dalymount Park redevelopment has been given the green light to proceed to the design

and planning stages was a huge boost to all at Bohemians and ensures that the project is well and truly underway.

An architect-led integrated design team will begin their work shortly on the preliminary design. During this process there will be consultation with all the relevant stakeholders.

The current plan is to develop:• A four-sided enclosed municipal stadium

6000 capacity UEFA Category 3 stadium• New north, south, east and west stands

• New community stand (east) - 1,000m² at first oor level including library, e ible community space, meeting rooms etc. plus c.1,000m² of concourse space at ground level which could potentially be utilised for community activities and events on non-match days.

• New football stand (west) - UEFA Category facilities plus club offices, meeting rooms

and 250m² of hospitality/community space The current provisional timeline for

completion is the commencement of 2025 season

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Bohemian Foundation has been unable to carry out its usual amount of hard and dedicated work within the community but we will get

back to those levels as soon as we can

In a move slightly different to previous launches, our new white alternative shirt was unveiled early on a Saturday morning,

just a week before the league commenced. With just one teaser photo beforehand,

it added to the intrigue and curiosity as we eagerly awaited its release, full in the knowledge that the last thing we would get was a generic template for a shirt.

And we weren’t disappointed either, the early morning reveal of an off-white shirt with blood-red pinstripes doesn’t tell half the story.

Once again, this made headlines, from the Irish Times to Forbes magazine, this had people talking and social-media buzzing. Oh, please tell me I wasn’t the only sad git who set his alarm for an 8am wake-up call for the unveiling?

A plain white shirt, this certainly isn’t! There is undeniably a lot going on here and you may have to ‘join the dots’ before being able to fully understand the concept behind our new alternative shirt.

It’s certainly cryptic, but ultimately it ‘brings together two of our greatest loves, football and music, through the city’s original football club and Dublin’s biggest band in years, as well as highlighting the unacceptable level of homelessness across the state’. Well, that’s the official description, but you may still have to explain to friends the Bohs-Fontaines-Dublin-Focus Ireland connection.

Fontaines DC (the DC part was an add-on, due to a similar named band in the states and stands for Dublin City) are a bit of an acquired taste. Think of an American tourist having his first sip of Guinness hey ll invariably ma e a

Bohs in the Better Landgrimaced expression, but a bit of perseverance will eventually make it worthwhile. A few friends highly recommended this band to me a while back. My initial reaction was a bit ‘ooohh, not sure about this’ but they are a bit of a grower and this post-punk revival band have a few cracking tunes in their discography. They’re no strangers to Dalyer, having previously lived close by. Maybe a gig in the old

ground wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility when we’re all living

in a better land? A link to the ersey on their official website

wouldn’t go amiss however, so that American guy knows where to get one! Aside from the bands logo on the front, possible thanks to main club partner Des Kelly Interiors, we’re treated to a homage to our fair city, with some lovely Celtic knot-work on the end of the sleeves, the iconic Poolbeg towers above the O’Neill’s

logo (an ingenious idea) and a badge with the

Grattan ridge lamps and it’s mythical hippocampus

half horse, half fish hrow in a Fontaines lyric ‘Dublin in the

Rain is Mine’ on the collar, this shirt is as Dublin as could be. The Padraig

Pearse inspired ‘Beware of the Risen People’ on the back is a quote that inspires hope for everyone when at their lowest ebb (Bohs fans right now?). But for me, the piéce de résistance is the stunning new minimalistic white version of our crest in our native tongue.

a e no mista e, this is a bona fide modern day classic shirt. It hasn’t been our biggest selling shirt for no reason. It’s just an incredibly beautiful shirt that will be highly sought-after in years to come. If you’re a rock star, porn star, superstar, doesn’t matter what you are, just don’t be a loser and miss out on this piece of Dublin art (See what I did there?).

Rating - 10/10 (Yep, it doesn’t get much better!)

Absent Friends

Marie FarrellAll at Bohemian FC were saddened to hear of the death of Marie Farrell who passed away at the end of January.

Marie enjoyed going to the club on a Sunday night where she went regularly for a number of years until she was diagnosed with dementia in December 2017 and she became a resident of Beechtree Nursing Home.

She loved dancing and she was a very popular, sociable woman who had plenty of friends.

Our Condolences to Marie’s daughters Michelle and Caroline, son Eamonn, brother Edward, sister Catherine, ten grandchildren and Michael, relatives and friends.

May she rest in peace. - Michael Ward

Memories, eh? They can leave a big Tom Baker smile was on your face but can also be manifestations of lantern-

jawed discontent.If you’re a collector of footballing

memorabilia a major problem develops as you age insomuch that while your collection increases in size, your house dimensions remain the same and as the years go by, your once harmless hobby starts to Tribble*-like take up more and more space in your home.

his will eventually result in whatever filing system you use starting to break down, and when it does, any new items acquired generally get dumped in a corner and there it remains until you are pestered into embarking on a decluttering session.

Many such sessions take place in early January, and this year as I rummaged through sundry detritus, one small plastic bag I picked up disintegrated and several small keepsakes within tumbled to the oor hey were mostly ticket stubs, but there were two other curios which gave me pause as to whether I should hold on to them or just send them to the recycling bin.

One of these stubs evoked dread; away to Thor Akureyri in 2012 - a humiliating European result! Elsewhere, away to Dundalk, also in 2012, a 2-2 draw, about which the most remarkable thing was the attendance, an estimated 250. Incredible to think that Dundalk only avoided relegation that season because Monaghan dropped out of the league! Home to Avondale in the FAI Cup was a game I had completely consigned to oblivion but when I looked it up, sounded like the footballing equivalent of Chinese water torture, as in front of an attendance of just 474, we missed two (yes, TWO!) penalties and only went through thanks to an Evan McMillan scuffed header. Then there was Limerick away in 2018, a game which after ten minutes, completely redefined the word ‘tedium’.

The only stub that generated genuinely warm fuzzy memories was for our penultimate

league fi ture of away to ongford On the same night, Shels were playing Rovers and we were hoping the Horribles would do us a favour. Needless to say they didn’t but I smile anytime I recall overhearing one young Bohs fan on the phone to a Rovers’ supporting mate of his after the final whistle as ing “Did yiz even try to win?!”

s for the two eepsa es, the first was a pile of Bass beermats, presumably pinched from

one of the Dalymount bars. “WTF is Bass?” younger readers may ask. I don’t know if it is still on sale, but Bass was a vile brown beer roughly comparable in taste with putrid Bovril and only consumed by miserable aul fellas sitting in pubs. They sponsored us for a while in the early 90s and their logo adorned our jerseys when we lifted the FAI Cup in 1992.

The other was a book of matches bearing the legend ‘Happy New Year from St Patrick’s Athletic FC.’ This was handed to me by a turnstile operator at Richmond Park on New Year’s Day either in ’89 or ’90. I think we lost 0-2, but really my only solid memory is that I turned up that afternoon nursing a five alarm hangover. Thirty years later the book still has a few unstruck matches which is a bit of a puzzle. I don’t smoke, nor do many of my mates and I can’t recall the last time someone lit up a fag in my gaff so it’s a mystery as to who used them.

Ah memories; sometimes they are like a headache and you only miss them when they’re gone.

The eighth of August 2020 was a landmark day in the history of the

ohemian ootball lub as the first eleven players to represent The Gypsies in the

oman s ational eague too to the field in Ferrycarraig Park against Wexford Youths.

ince then, with a first season now under their belt, the senior womens side have gone from strength to strength and face this new campaign with renewed hope and vigour.

A quick chat with Assistant Manager Pat Trehy and winger Abbie Brophy underlines the positivity about the group and the steely determination to continue to make their mark and develop this new facet of the club.

The coaching ticket is a hugely experienced one. Manger Sean Byrne works with the FAI and played Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United as a centre half. Derek O’Neill played league football too for the likes of Monaghan, Drogheda, Shamrock Rovers and Limerick. Pat himself is a stalwart having kept goal for Bray Wanderers, Shamrock Rovers, St. James’ Gate and Monaghan United. He has been at Bohs since 2019, initially with the u17 women’s team. He has also coached and managed at Peamount, Shelbourne and as part of the underage international girls set up.

A Portmarnock native, 22 year old right-winger Abbie is in her third campaign in the league having played for Kilkenny United and then last year here at Bohemians.

From The Word Go…“It has been brilliant to work here from

the word go as the club have been incredibly supportive,” beams Pat. “We were every late entrants to the WNL last season so it was all about finding our feet and getting this part of the club established. Myself and Frank Darby approached Stephen Lambert and Chris Brien about getting the license to compete in the WNL and we were bowled over by their support and enthusiasm. Understandably, we felt they would have key questions regarding costings, sponsorship, recruitment and all that goes with setting up a new team and when we suggested that players would pay subs to

finance the team the two lads wouldn t hear of it.”

He continues, “From the very outset we were given everything the men are given, the best of gear and training facilities and huge exposure in club bulletins and communications. In that respect Daniel Lambert and John O’Connor deserve huge credit too. Chris Brien has been unequivocal in his backing and everything the girls’ need has been given to

Blazing a Trail• Abbie Brophy

Page 15: Bohemian FC

them. So, there is no token gesture here, everything is whole-hearted and we were determined that if we were to enter the WNL we would be competitive and add to the professionalism of the league.”

Wrapped Up in Bohs…For Abbie, a youth team payer all the way up

through the ran s at helbourne, with a difficult season in il enny behind her, a edgling career had reached a crossroads. She was unsure whether she was going to continue in the game until she was approached by Bohemians. Her decision to give it a try, she says, ranks as the best decision she has ever made in the game and with the enthusiasm and passion with which she speaks about the project here at the club, it is easy to see why this team are on the up.

“It has been such a good decision and I am absolutely loving my football again! When Bohs approached me I really liked what I heard from the management about their plans for the club and I’d be very hopeful that this season we may really surprise a few people. I knew a good few of the girls when first arrived and that helped me to settle in and we really bonded as a group. Now with each session, with each match, we get stronger as a group. I’ve learned so much from Pat, Sean and all the coaching staff. I feel I have never understood the game as well as I do now and that’s down to the brilliant coaching and preparation we get.”

This growth is a point not lost on Pat either. “From my point of view, and the club too, it has never been about anything other than doing the right thing for women in sport ohemians have built a very ustified

reputation and culture of equality and inclusivity and I’ve really seen that in the past year when the application to join the WNL was submitted and accepted. It is a wonderful club and the girls have been put front and centre of everything. We are just looking forward to the days when fans can come to our games and cheer the girls on in person.”

A Flying Start…It is perhaps prudent to bear in mind that with

such a late application and acceptance to the league last season, ohs first campaign was never li ely to see the girls challenge for honours. Last term was

about establishing foundations. Yes,

ohs finished bottom of the table but they were not being served up hammerings and the team spirit has been growing since that debut against Wexford Youths last August. If any proof were needed, this progress can be seen by the fact that they beat Treaty United 6-2 at the end of

arch in their first game of this season, a team that beat them twice last year.

“Yes that was a really good performance,” agrees Pat. “We are still a very young team with a number of 18 or 19 year olds but we have recruited well since the end of last season. We have brought in

a lot of experience lie Sophie Watters who was an underage international, Niamh Coombes who played professionally in Iceland, Jade Reddy and Naima Chemaou. Also, the players we had last year have a full season of experience at this level with the club. We are not there yet, we are a work in progress, but we will get there.”

he e perience that has come in will definitely help us develop as a team,” agrees Abbie who assisted for the third goal on that day. “We were delighted

The Big Interview.indd 2 11/04/2021 18:40

Page 16: Bohemian FC

with the performance and the win. I feel that it was well overdue as last season we played really well in a lot of games and didn’t get the results we deserved. In the two defeats to Treaty last term, I felt we were the better side so perhaps we felt we had something to prove as definitely thin we wanted in more on the day.

t definitely gave us a bit of a boost, especially when it was our first game e were underdogs going into that, but we never saw ourselves as that. As Pat said this season is all about building so a good start was just what we needed.”

Despite losing their second game in Galway, she insists the team remain positive and focused. “People don’t actually realise how much experience we actually have now with a good mixture of youth too. I think the management has built very strong foundations with a good backbone to the side with players who know the league. We are not the same team as last season, that’s for sure, I think we are ready to move up a level now and be more competitive.”

A Work in Progress..Pat feels that in Sean Byrne, the Bohs ladies have

the right person to bring them on to that next level that Abbie speaks about.

“He is a brilliant coach and the attention to detail in the way the players are prepared for games is just superb, he says am confident that as the season goes on, we will really grow as a side. Peamount, Shelbourne and Wexford are at the top of the tree in the women’s game in Ireland, our goal is to build towards matching them and to be able to compete consistently against them. It will take time, but I feel sure looking at this group of players and the set up we have here that we will get to where we want to be.”

“We are ambitious and want to compete at the highest level,” agrees Abbie. “We are still a young team, as Pat said, and only starting out in terms of growing the women’s side of the club. As I’ve said to the girls, we should be pushing for top five of si this season, higher if we can, to challenge and compete with the big three of Wexford, Shels and Peamount. There is no point in competing if you don’t feel you can win and progress yourself. We are well coached, compact and attack well, so why shouldn’t we have faith in ourselves?”

The Bohemian Spirit…For Pat, the key has been the eagerness of the

girls to better themselves and do the right things to make the optimum progress they can. It is the level of buy-in that has most impressed him as the girls face into the campaign. “The thing with these girls is that they are so willing to learn and develop their game.

As the saying goes ‘Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day,’ so over the next few years we have to continue to rise to the challenge. There is a great spirit in the dressing room but this is no social club, I can assure you! These girls want to compete and want to win and they are professional in everything they do. I am as positive about the project as they are and considering that the cub has backed us 100%, I’d just ask the Bohs community to do the same and give the girls the support they deserve once we are allowed back to games.”

“I would agree completely with Pat there,” says Abbie. “The club have been so good to us. I would never have believed when I was coming through at Shelbourne that a few short years later we would have the e posure and profile we have now he games are live-streamed, the WNL team has featured a lot in club communications and as Pat said we have wanted for nothing in terms of facilities, gear and preparation. We deserve that just as much as the lads teams so it is great to see that the club have been so inclusive. I am so proud to be playing in the WNL and so proud to represent Bohemians. I knew how well established the club was and what a rich history it has but now that I’ve been here a while, I can really see how special it is.

“Bohs have made us feel central to the club and been so welcoming. There is a great atmosphere and I look forward to the day when the crowds can be at games. When things open up, we’d love to play in Dalymount more, go to the lads games, be actively part of more club occasions. The pandemic has been tough on everyone so we feel so privileged to be able to train and pay and do what we love best.”

Formed in 1979, United joined the League, albeit the B Division, for the 1983/84 season and became a founder member of the League of Ireland First

Division, playing initially at Belgium Park (they would not move to Gortakeegan until 1987).

Eight seasons into their League stint and the club etched themselves into history by becoming the first side to win promotion courtesy of the relegation/promotion play off route third place finish saw them face Waterford United and a 5-2 aggregate win gave them a place in the top division for the 1993/94 season.

seventh place finish was the reward but their stay was short lived as only two seasons later they were relegated. They spent a solitary year back in the Premier Division for the 2000/01 season before normal service resumed.

It wasn’t until 2010 when United fans had something to cheer about again as the side reached the League Cup Final against Sligo Rovers and also a place in the promotion play-off. However the cheers soon dissipated; a 1-0 loss to Sligo Rovers and being at the wrong end of a penalty shoot-out against Bray

anderers in the relegation promotion final put paid to a season that offered so much promise. Incidentally, the play-off match at the Carlisle Grounds was televised and will be remembered for the wall collapsing while spectators celebrated a goal.

2011 saw United’s fortunes change, sort of. One Roddy Collins was appointed manager and with him came the cameras as The Return of the Rod Squad documented his time at the wheel during his second season, just as the club were preparing for a third stint in the Premier Division, having beaten Galway United 5-1 on aggregate in the promotion/relegation play-off.

The unfolding season propelled Monaghan into the national spotlight, showcasing to League of Ireland philistines the dedication that goes into making a League team tick as various volunteers were able to say it as it was on screen.

It is with irony then that midway through the campaign, Monaghan withdrew their participation for reasons “.. mainly, but not only financial...” at the same time as Irish fans (and John Delaney) were reveling in the atmosphere of Euro 2012. It left a sour taste in the mouths of all associated with the League, typifying the gulf between the international set-up and those who had to make their own way in Irish football.

After a seven year gap, Sligo return to European football this year in the Europa Conference League first qualifying round. Back in 2014, they shook Rosenborg by beating them 2-1 in their backyard in the Europa League.

Having overcome FK Banga 4-0 on aggregate, hopes were high of the Bit O’Red progressing when they hosted Rosenborg a week later but the Norweigans, just about, ran out 3-1 winners.

In 2013, Sligo were Ireland’s representatives in the UEFA Champions League and against Norweigan side Molde FK, managed by current Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Sligo succumbed 0-1 and 0-2 over both fixtures. The mighty Red Star Belgrade were Sligo’s first European opponents in the European Cup of 1977/78 and they gave a credible performance and only succumbed by 3-0 in both legs. They came out on top against Floriana of Malta (agg. 3-2) in the Cup Winners Cup ’94/95 and drew 0-0 with Dutch side Heerenven and 3-3 with Nantes of France in the 1996 Intertoto Cup.

JACKIE Jameson responded in kind to the carnival atmosphere in Dublin as he produced another eye-catching display form his bag of tricks as Bohemians trotted comfortable to a league victory over Sligo Rovers

But even Jackie’s breathtaking sleight of foot was overshadowed by one of the home side’s newcomers, Larry Wyse who underlined his potency after only seven minutes when he gave Bohs the lead, following a good run of play which began with Christy Ryan nicking the ball of the foot of Sligo captain Tony Fagan before feeding Jameson, who cleverly drew out the defence before slotting across to Wyse.

The goal was slightly embarrassing for Fagan who was making his 500th league appearance and received a presentation before kick-off to mark this occasion.

ndeed the whole visiting midfield was swamped in the opening half and Bohs should have made ore of their ample possession and Jameson’s trickery than a mere second goal after 35 minutes.

Ryan, standing in for the suspended Rocky O’Brien, belied earlier efforts by beating Fagan to a beautifully paced through ball from

yse and finishing sharply Good wor by Gino awless, who also appeared to have left his shooting boots at home, set this cracking move in motion.

Sligo meanwhile switched Fagan to the right an in an effort to bring tric y arry

A COMBINATION of a whistle-happy referee and fine goal eeping by ligo eeper Alan Patterson contributed to a scoreless draw at Dalymount in a game which promised more than the final scoreline suggested.

Bohemians could at least claim to have made a match of it as they pushed forward and addy oyce and Gino awless had notable shots well saved by Patterson. For the visitors, it was all about the defence as Paul Fielding, Chris Rutherford and Paddy Sheridan were all in charge. Such was the defensive policy adopted, Sligo didn’t manage one attac during the first half, despite showing slightly more urgency in the second.

McLoughlin, their greatest asset, into the game. Thought the ploy worked fairly well, it produced no goals.

Bohemians, who had lost Paul Doolin through suspension, lost urgency int he second half. Ibrox Park was obviously beckoning...

With the entire GAA system in lockdown for a few months now, they have no footballs to kick,

but some people still wanted to kick out at something, so the League of Ireland became a target.

Everyone who plays or watches Gaelic games has been frustrated with the lack of activity, the border adding to the angst when club sides in the six counties were allowed to resume training last week while adult GAA remains on hold, with training for u s first to get the green light in the other twenty six.

Everyone’s a bit angry about everything, but for certain GAA voices to lash out at soccer was unexpected, as we thought those days were over.

There was one columnist in a national newspaper who said last year that giving the Covid vaccine to GAA players would more or less “lift the spirits of the nation” by getting G bac on the field uic er than e pected That was a jaw-droppingly ignorant take along the lines of Daily Mail writers who think that a royal wedding or the birth of a princess lifts the national mood in England, because a mother on universal credit in Toxteth can use that “national mood” to feed her hungry children.

Tomás Ó Sé was the worst culprit. Writing about the issue of members of the Dublin senior panel to breach the GAA’s own rules and the laws of the land, by training at 7am when there was a blanket ban on training, the Kerry legend said “it does seem utterly perverse that League of Ireland players can train away right now as so-called elite athletes, but one of the greatest Irish sports teams ever seen must stay at home, sitting on their hands”.

Two phrases stick out there, ‘utterly perverse’ and ‘so-called elite athletes.’ Ó Sé didn’t directly turn his ire at those who made the decisions, the officials from government and the HSE who led us to this situation where soccer is ok but GAA is banned, but instead took a cheap shot at the League.

If an ex-Kerry footballer thinks that is utterly perverse’ then he should get out more.

And ‘so-called elite’ was another poor comment from someone who was a fine footballer. Whether he intended it or not he was tossing a handful of magical pixie dust over the GAA, giving it a coat of purity, and degrading soccer. GAA people are entitled to feel aggrieved at their situation, and it is indeed confusing to some that senior inter-county

football was deemed to be elite back in December but not now.

Do we drag this down to schoolyard level? Does Ó Sé honestly feel that someone like Chris McCann, who played in the Premier League, or Raivis Jurkovskis, who played for Latvia in World

up ualifiers against some pretty strong nations last month, are ‘so-called athletes’, and are inherently inferior to a plodding corner-forward

with the Laois footballers or one of the Donegal hurlers?

If the GAA world has an issue, take it up with those who made the decisions, don’t throw in sneaky elbows of the verbal kind.

The GAA can be as guilty of hypocrisy as any organisation in the country, so they are truly Irish in that sense. With the recent marking of the 50th anniversary of the lifting of The Ban, where GAA members were forbidden from not just playing but even watching ‘foreign games’ like soccer and cricket, came one historical nugget, from Ocean FM, which said so much about Ireland then.

Sligo’s county board were one of only two counties to vote for the retention of the Ban, yet once the an was lifted, ligo were first out of the traps to profit, adding ligo overs players Gerry Mitchell and David Pugh to the senior panel. We don’t want soccer polluting our country, until we decide that we do.

Ireland, as a country, needed The Ban to be lifted, it needed GAA grounds to be opened to other sports. Right now, it does not need GAA people looking down their noses at soccer.

• Not a sight we’re likely to see anytime soon...

Bohs journey in the Women’s National League continued as they travelled to Eamonn

Deacy Park to take on Galway WFC in their second game of the campaign.

Galway held a 2-0 lead at half time with their goals coming from the league’s top scorer, Rachel Kearns, and Kate Slevin. Bohs were lucky to get to half time without conceding any further goals but they still would have been disappointed with the defensive errors that led to their two goal half time deficit

Four changes were made at the break but it didn’t have the desired effect as Galway pulled further ahead on the hour mark when Lyndsey McKey scored from close range. Bohs came into the game after this goal with Chloe Darby scoring direct from a corner kick in the 71st minute and she then almost made it 3-2 when she hit the crossbar with a free kick.

Galway ran out deserved winners but the fightbac in the second half was impressive after a poor first half from Bohs.

Bohemians goalscorer Chloe Darby spoke to the club’s media team about the game and remained positive despite their first defeat of the season:

“It was a tough match, we always knew Galway were going to be tough opponents. Like we played them last year, but I think it was a big improvement on last year. Although we lost which is not really something to celebrate I think you could see we got more into their half this year. Last year we were just defending and this year we had a few chances at and we scored a goal.”

It will be a Dublin Derby next in the WNL as Bohs host the league champions Peamount United this Saturday.
