Excursion to Kjerringøy old trading post– one of Nordland’s most beautiful sites

TOUR 2

BODØ

Kjerringøy2

Kjerringøy Island is known for its beautiful landscape and well-kept historical trading post. The excursion takes you to one of Northern Norway’s most visited destinations; the magnificent historical trading post of Kjerringøy.

The old trading post of Kjerringøy is beautifully located in a stunning-ly scenic landscape, and is one of Norway’s most important cultural heritage monuments from the 19th century. The historical site’s fifteen authentic buildings are owned and run by Nordland museum, and are fully preserved in their original state, even with original interiors and a large archive. The merchants business had its heyday in the late 19th century, and the wealth was made from fish trade. Fish was Norway’s most impor-tant export from the Middle Ages until the oil-era.

The living history museum gives you a unique insight into the coastal culture of Northern Norway. Here you can see and experience how everyday life was lived by the gentry, fishermen and servants in Nordland at the end of the 19th century, and how the export of fish brought cultural impulses from central Europe to the far north.

Trip to the majestic Saltstraumen maelstromTOUR 10

BODØ

Magic Saltstraumen is situated in a spectacular building at the foot of the Saltstraum Bridge, close to the world’s strongest tidal current.

Inside this spectacular building, Saltstraumen’s hidden and exciting stories are brought to life and form the basis for, and give rise to, many adventures, both culinary and through photographs and films. There is also a small souvenir shop if you want to take home a reminder of your visit.

Norwegian salmon are to be on display in the outdoor pool, with information about Norwegian fish farms and salmon exports an essential feature. Around the centre, visitors can wander in the beautiful landscape with 6km of surfaced nature trails with plenty of places to stop and rest.

Saltstraumen was recently chosen as one of The Wild Wonders of Europe because of its impressive marine life and the wild currents.

Here, you can watch an awe-inspiring film of the depths of the world’s strongest tidal current, which will leave a lasting impression on you. The film will give you a visual experience of brightly coloured sea ane-nomae and sea cucumbers in pink, green and orange, sea fans, bubble gum corals, dead man’s finger corals, breadcrumb sponge and sea lilies which filter their food from the nutrient-rich water. There are two coral reefs with stony corals and a coral reef with horny corals here. In other words, a film that shows the natural wonders of a unique underwater environment. People flock to Norway from around the world to experience the country’s incredible scenery and wildlife not just the phenomenon that is Saltstraumen!

It is said that many more people come to experience the Northern Lights. In the cinema, you can watch a documentary on the Northern Lights. This documentary examines fascinating myths, history and facts through amazing film footage and images. Most cultures have legends about the polar light, passed from generation to generation. It takes viewers on a journey through myths, faith and supernatural beliefs.

The film explains about the sun in simple terms, and using animations from NASA shows how the Northern Lights are formed, where to go in order to see them, how we can predict them and how you can take wonderful photographs of them. The film ends with a time-lapse sequence from Ole C. Salomonsen, one of the world’s best Northern Lights photographers.

The daily ebb and flow of the tide through the narrow strait linking Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden generates incredibly strong currents in the swirling water. The rich occurrence of fish that feed here and the dangerous currents have provided fertile ground for settlement, culture and myths for the past ten thousand years and a veritable treas-ure trove of cultural relics surround Norway’s third oldest documented settlement. The Viking chieftain Raud den Rame (Raud the Strong) lived in the area and is described in the saga of Snorre.

The world’s largest pollock was caught by a fisherman’s rod in the tidal current, and cod and wolffish are often caught here by sports fisher-men. Large numbers of seabirds overwinter and feed here. Salten has the densest population of white-tailed eagles anywhere in the world, and the majestic bird can be seen flying over Saltstraumen daily.

Experiencing Saltstraumen at its height is a dramatic experience! Saltstraumen itself is situated within walking distance, just 100-150m from the building.

Tour descriptionYou can either come by bus from the ship, which includes a short sightseeing tour of the town, or you can take the rigid-hulled inflatable boat. Saltstraumen is situated just 30 minutes’ drive from the pier.Included in this trip are entrance to the exhibition, film, coffee and waffles.

OTHER FEATURES OF INTEREST: Bodø is the capital of Nordland, and is located strategically by theentrance of the massive Vestfjord, close to Saltenfjord which containsthe world’s strongest tidal maelstrom, and surrounded by beautiful andaccessible mountains.

Bodø has a population of 50 000, with a busy airport, sea and railterminals. Bodø is a transport hub for much of Nordland and North-ern Norway.

MILITARY HERITAGEDuring the 1960s the air base was developed into NATOs mostimportant air force base in the Northern region. Jet fighters from Bodøwere regularly the first ones to intercept and identify naval vesselsand aircraft from the Soviet Northern Fleet as they headed out to theAtlantic.

Although now a peaceful city with several colleges and a university, Bodø is mindful of its military heritage as a NATO outpost, and the majority of the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s F-16 jets are still stationed here. Bodø also proudly hosts annual NATO exercises of various sizes, giving citizens and visitors a rare glimpse of activitiesnormally performed at distant locations.

The Cold War made its mark on the city of Bodø, with occasionalsuspicious visits by foreign trawlers bristling with aerial antennae, and with several spy stories worthy of the best LeCarre novel. Butalso allies from the United States and Canada, England, Germany, theNetherlands and other nations have spent countless weeks in Bodøduring large NATO exercises, and we would not be surprised to hearthat some of your passengers have actually been here before – inuniform, in the service of their country.

When the USS Croatan unloaded a consignment of cocooned Lock-heed F-104 Starfighters at Bodø harbour in 1963, it marked the start of an active allied presence in the area. Only a few years earlier, the U-2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers of the CIA was shot down over the Soviet Union, and international high tension culminated as the Soviet Premier Krutschev threatened to destroy Bodø with nuclear weapons. Maps found in the wreckage proved that the spy plane was headed for a landing shrouded in secrecy – right here in Bodø. Now, an original and intact U-2 can be seen at close hand here in Bodø.

Nowadays, the relations to nearby Russia are of a friendlier nature, butmuch of the Cold War history can be viewed at the National AviationMuseum located less than five minutes by bus from the pier. Bodøalso hosts one of the two Norwegian Search and Rescue Centres, ambulance aircraft and modern Search and Rescue helicopters on 24/7alert, that are specially equipped and trained for Arctic and all-weather Operations. Crews regularly train in the Spitsbergen region.
