four Judy Garland films madebetween 1944-48, namely "Under theClock", "Easter Parade", "Meet Me inSt. Louis" and "The Private".

Seeing these films brings home to methe tremendous loss Judy was to thescreen during the 1950s (apart from "AStar is Born") and also makes utter non-sense of J. Gibson's recent claim thatshe made only one great film.

"Standard Slipping Mr. Sinatra?" I'mafraid he is in the position of a criticwho only sees the first half of aHitchcock film and then comes to a

conclusion without seeing the end. Ifonly Mr. Jones had heard the Sinatraalbums as yet unissued in Britain thenhe might possibly come to anotherconclusion.

"Sinatra with Strings" finds Franksinging even better than on "I RememberTommy" and one track in particular-"Come Rain or Shine" ranks amongstthe greatest things that Frank has everdone. "Sinatra's Swinging Session"wasn't Frank's last for Capitol either-there is yet to come a very good albumfrom this company entitled "Point cfNo Return" which is full of fine thingsthus absolutely disproving the Sinatrais slipping theory.

Would Mr. Jones like to answer onequestion for me? Even assuming that"Ring a Ding Ding" and "Come SwingWith Me" (which PJ didn't mention) arenot up to the highest Sinatra standards,would PJ like to name any albums bymale vocalists or recent issue that aregreater than these? It would appear that the only discjockeys these days that do p!ay Haleyrecords are Jimmy Smile, Tony Hall,David Jacobs, Jack Jackson and, on rareoccasions, Pete Murray.

In closing may I offer a word on thearguments put forward by Larry Adleron the pop music of these days. Iwonder if he knows that a musical worklasting 40 minutes was written round the12 bar theme of "Rock Around TheClock" by Merrick Farran, a formerviolinist with the Royal PhilharmonicOrchestra and performed by the BBCConcert Orchestra under Willem Tauskyat the Royal Festival Hall in June,1957 . . .

JERRY'S 14 MONTHABSENCE

NOT for 14 months has the VOICEof Jerry Lordan been heard on

a single release - though his songshave provided huge hits for a lotof other stars. Latest of his chart -toppers is " Wonderful Land," forThe Shadows.

But all that time, Jerry has nursed anambition to get back on disc withprecisely the right type of number.

Said Jerry: "Previously I had singles outand I thought at least three of themmight have done well . . . but theydidn't. 'Who Could Be Bluer?' didnicely but I still fell that I didn't wantto record again until I had the rightsong and the right arranger -director."

I report that Jerry is back on disc withan April 27 Parlophone release. Topside is "One Good Solid 24 -caratReason".

The arranger -director is Bill Shepherd.And the composer, words and music, is

What's more, he wrote the flip," Second Hand Dreams ", withPye's Tony Kaye. And Jerry andTony originally kicked off their careerswith an act called "Lee And JayElvin".

Said Jerry: "I really think this is thebest record I've done. I think theworld of Bill Shepherd-and made upmy mind I wanted him to work withme after he did Vince Eager's `World'sLoneliest Man' for Top Rank. He'sfull of ideas ..."

Why should successful songwriter Jerryworry about disc stardom? "Pride,"he said. "I think that's it. I justwant to prove I can do it, given theright material and the right backing."

Would disc success not interfere withsuccessful songwriter Jerry's compos-ing? "Not really," he said. "I'donly tour with people I really knewand liked. And there is always plentyof time to fit in television appear-ances ..."

I suspect that Jerry Is, to some extent,hankering after a get -away from thepop -writings of Tin Pan Alley. Hewants to experiment with writing on abroader scale. And this has broughthim one early disappointment.

JERRY LORDAN: the right song.

"We completed a musical," he said,"and I took it over, together withtapes and discs, to America. It seemsthey liked the music but they foughtshy of the story, which is set in aSouth American country and has a bitof a political theme. We wrote theshow specifically for the Americanmarket-so it was a bring -down.

"If I can find the right collaborator Iwould work on re -writing and chang-ing the basic story. That way Iestimate I could save 40 per cent. onthe present score.

"I was talking to Anthony Newley aboutmy ambitions on the musical scene.And he said the only way was to findthe right sort of collaborator-he hasLeslie Bricusse-and then work regularoffice hours until the job is done.

"Tony said he was a bit lazy otherwise.So am I. Now I've got to find theright collaborator. But it's worth it-there is a lot more money to be madeout of a successful musical than outof pop music. Anyway, with pop, Ikeep asking myself how long it canlast. I've had three years of song-writing-and that is quite a long time."

Immediately, though, Jerry would like tosnake it big on record. He's got "onegood solid 24 -carat reason" for beingpretty confident . . .

A POP SINGER GETS THE KEY TO THE DOOR .

THE CHANGE IN BILLYTHERE once was a time when impresario LARRY PARNES had an office full

of young singers called Fame, Goode, Eager, Power, and Nancy Spainsaid he had someone called "Thighs." And other humorists said he wasthinking of calling the next lot " Seth Angry," " Rut Manly " or "HubKapp".

And there was a lad called Fury. BILLY FURY.Now the Parnes stable door has been

left open and most of them have gone.Except Marty Wilde, Tommy Steele-and there is this lad called Fury. BillyFury.

And Billy is the one now nearest tonudging Cliff Richard off his top -of -

the -tree perch.

Yet Billy has been the most contro-versial of them all. He's been attackedfor his sexy stage act. Banned in Irelandbecause of his physical gyrations. Andcriticised up and down the country.

But we say he is the most improvedsinger of the lot. And the most im-proved visual artist. And the mostmodest-tongue-tied sometimes-pop starof them all.

Now he is twenty-one.

The key to the door has been addedto his thousands in the bank. In effect,maturity only hit Billy Fury with thesuccess of " Halfway to Paradise."

That was his first Top Ten entryafter many near misses and doubts. For

Billy it was a complete change of policy.Strings, loud brass-all on the disc forthe first time. What's more, it wasn'tone of his own compositions.

DIFFERENTIt was so different that Billy himself

wasn't impressed with it. He was talkedinto recording it by the shrewd LarryParries and Decca executives.

Now he admits that once over this TopTen hurdle he has become happier andmore confident than ever before. Per-haps this is reflected in the fact that hehas abandoned the gold lame suit andhas even been known to sing sittingon top of a stool on stage.

The fact that be is appearing in afilm is another sign that Billy is nolonger just one of the herd. Now thefilm is safely in the can, to be releasedin June under the title " Play It Cool,"Billy is detached enough to view it dis-passionately.

He told us : "I enjoyed it. AlthoughI wouldn't call myself an actor. I've

FURY.only seen the odd rushes here and thereand I'm a bit wary of seeing it fromstart to finish. Still, it won't do meany harm. That's for sure."

He added: " I look upon the film asmore of a singing film than anacting film. However, the fans will seeme acting and talking as well, and theymay even have to get used to my Lan-cashire accent I "

Billy has never made any secret of hisliking for the Ray Charles kind ofrhythm and blues singing. He was oneof Charles's earliest supporters in thiscountry. Therefore it was no surpriseto those close to him when he took offand recorded " Letter Full of Tears."

His tribute and attempt to get underthe skin of r 'n' b singing-and thoughit wasn't his most successful disc, Billyhas no regrets.

He still wants to record a whole L.P.of this kind of material. "I want tohave really two sides, two approaches,to singing," he says. " One side is theballads like Halfway To Paradise,'Jealousy' and ' I'd Never Find

Another You' And the other is therock 'n' roll."

SEARCHWhile other beat singers have had

their groups-and largely stuck to them-Billy has had a long search to findjust what he wanted, both from thepersonality point of view and from theinstrumental side.

He is now sure he has got the rightblend. The Tornados-five men whowere originally session musicians forpeople like John Leyton-in fact theyonce backed John on his own packageshow.

They now have their own record out,a number called " Love And Fury."

Billy has made his name in mammothtours. He has travelled widely. He'sdriven himself to illness. He recentlycollapsed on his current show and wastaken off to the London Clinic.

He has no intention, however, oftaking life any easier. Because he knowshimself how important a good stage actis. Billy's stage technique is such thathe no longer really needs a hit disc todraw people in to see him.

This, then, is Billy Fury.

1961, the Academy Award -winning number from the movie" Breakfast At Tiffany's", the songwhich had three hit single discs, 13" also-ran " singles and featured onat least 15 albums.

And the song that established youngDanny Williams as a Top Twenty starin Britain. In America the main hitswere by Jerry Butler (vocal) and com-poser Henry Mancini's orchestralversion.

GUNNComposer Mancini came to promin-

ence three years ago with his "PeterGunn" theme and this was followed by"More Music From Peter Gunn" and"Music From Mr. Lucky". AtUniversal -International ten years ago hewrote the score for "The Glenn MillerStory" and also composed specialmaterial for Dinah Shore, Billy Eckstineand Betty Hutton.

Co -composer Johnny Mercer, one-time performing colleague of Bing

Crosby, has countless hits to his credit-such as "Old Black Magic", "AutumnLeaves", "Lazybones", "Come Rain OrCome Shine " and " Blues In TheNight."

"Moon River" is the 28th Award -winning song.

The others, going backwards from1960, were "Never On Sunday", "HighHopes", "Gigi", "All The Way", "WhatEver Will Be, Will Be", "Love Is AMany-Splendoured Thing".

I'VE come to the conclusion that" loneliness " is being over-

worked in the pop music field.And my reasons?The first is JOHN LEYTON. His

latest disc is " Lonely City ", andit follows his last one called"Lone Rider ". His publicitymen dub him Leyton TheLonely, and hand out picturesof him in appropriate stances tofit the name.

Surely nobody that successful couldbe that lonely!

My other reasons are the loads ofpop discs that get issued with anoh -so -lonely title. Just lately we'vehad "Alone Too Long ", bycourtesy of Frank Ifield, and VinceEager reckons he's " The LoneliestMan In The World ".

Some past hit -paraders in thismedium have been "Only TheLonely", by Roy Orbison, also byFrank Sinatra, although a differentsong, and "Lonely Boy" from PaulAnka.

Elvis Presley sang a song called"Lonesome Cowboy", and Mr.Jackie Wilson gave us "LonelyTeardrops" and "Alone At Last".

There have been at least three dif-ferent versions of the title"Lonely". One from Eddie Coch-ran, one from Chris Wayneand The Echoes, and one fromGary Stites. And once, they saidin the States, that Gary was a com-

petitor to Presley, for such was thefrenzy of his fans, when he touredin concert.

The twangy guitar man, Duane Eddymade a disc called "The LonelyOne", while Adam Faith got"Lonely Pup" into the charts.Other sundry discs in the idiom in-clude "Lonely Blue Nights", "Mr.Loneliness", "Alone In The Night","Lonely Week -ends", "LonesomeTraveller", "Lonely Street", andrecently "Lonesome No. 1".

It gets rather depressing when onesees just how many lonely recordsthere are. But one thing's certain:

My meeting with JOE MARES, thetall, greying chief of Southland Records,which is situated above the MaresBrothers' fur warehouse to the rathersuitable odour of curing hides, was nota happy one. His obvious Jim Crowattitude towards Negro jazzmen was sopatently condescending that I foundmyself extremely angry with every wordhe said.

His catalogue of New Orleans musicon the Southland label reveals this pre-judice more than any words he couldsay. and his reputation among colouredjazz musicians in the city is rock -bottom.

SUPERIORBecause he believed that white jazz

was always superior to coloured jazz andbecause he presented a racially biasedfront to such Negro musicians as enteredhis studios to record, the discs he issuedwere of a certain character, and thatcharacter illustrated the man. Thisalbum is only one typical example . . .

These arc Bourbon Street white Dixie-land bands playing, for the most part,tunes usually played by coloured NewOrleans bands. In such a collection ofmusicians and bands there are a fewinteresting moments, and one or twotouches of inspiration, but the mood isimitative and the music sterile. Comparethis with the fine Living Legends "albums of JIM ROBINSON, KIDTHOMAS and SWEET EMMA BAR-RETT (Riverside RLP.369, 365 and 364respectively) and the object lesson iseffectively brought home. BELFAST, the home of the RodneyFoster band, is a more significant

jazz centre than one might suppose,listening to this unimaginative album.Even before the George Webb Dixie-landers, back in the days when Trad.jazz was in the embryonic stage, KenSmiley's Band made a few impressivebroadcasts on the Northern IrelandHome Service, only faintly heard on myset in the Midlands.

Like Freddy Mirfield's Garbage Men,Nat Gonella, The Six Swingers, TheRhythm Rascals, Vic Lewis -Jack ParnallJazzmen, Harry Parry and a few otherprofessional and near -professional music -makers in the pre -Webb days, Smileyadded his own contribution to thescene, unadvertised as it was by thedistance between Belfast and Londonand wartime conditions.

Smiley's clarinet player, HowardChamberlain, was stationed a mile from

spectacular orchestral writing hasnot changed very much. He still has thepenchant for great showering brassfigures and a certain type of soloist whois technically polished but whose solosrarely rise above the level of the senti-mental. The Johnny Richards treatmentof "Maria" is typical. There is some-thing relentless about it that is ratherwearying. All those bare, unpreparedmajor traids make your head spin aftera while, for all the precision with whichthey are executed.

I think the best way for Kenton torestore the jazz content of his orchestrais to pack the band with outstandingsoloists, as he did eight or ten years ago.Sam Donahue on tenor and GabeBaltazar on alto are not really giftedenough to sustain the jazz ear over anextended performance like this.

The best of the soloists is trumpeterConte Candoli. His style is exactly thesame as it was ten years ago, but thesameness is acceptable in the light ofCandoli's spirited playing, his fine cleartone and his ability to generate an auraof excitement.

There are also a few of those bogus -concerto piano interludes from Kenton,an observation not meant to be disparag-ing. Possibly these pieces are bad music,but I find them pleasant enough. B.G.

appears we think perhaps this isthe last. but transcriptions of dancesconcerts and private sessions continueto appear. This one is the relic of aconcert -dance in New York Cityaround 1951-52, and very little isknown of the event apart from thefact that Parker was there. Researchat Esquire has revealed a list of per-sonnel which is probable rather thandefinite, but the list seems prettyaccurate to me, except that theappearance of Barney Kessell's nameshocked me, because I never thoughtof him in the same ensemble asParker.

The reproduction is, of course, poorwhen compared to the studio perfec-tions we have all become used to.But once again, the acid test involvesthe quality of the music, not thequality of the recording. It is purelya matter of personal decisions, butspeaking for myself, I would ratherhave this album, with all the attendantcrowd noises, than almost any of thecurrent studio -produced crop. Thereare some moments when Parker'splaying beggars description. In theGerry Mulligan original "Rocker"

Parker is really astounding. He fliesthrough the harmonies with such easeand such melodic grace that onerealises yet again that there is nobodywho remotely compares with him.The same remark applies to parts of"Cool Blues", "This Time theDream's on Me", indeed practicallyevery track.

Possibly we all tend to take CharlieParker for granted these days. His is anO.K. name we bandy about. If we needany reminder as to exactly how muchof a genius he was, we ought to studythat solo on "Rocker" in close detail.After that chore, we know what jazzcan really sound like when a genius isplaying it. Parker album in a way, for onceagain this is a transcription of a liveperformance, around 1951-52, withall the crowd noises and otherunavoidable distractions thrown in.And the conclusion one comes to isthe same. There may be people whochoose not to buy such albums be-cause they demand felicitous repro-duction. They must suit themselves,but they do so at the risk of over-looking jazz of superlative quality.

I would gladly give the price of thisalbum for the "These Foolish Things"

track alone. There is a phrase on thebars 27-30 of his last chorus on thistune which Lester often played on thistheme. It is a typical Lester phrase,whimsical and romantic and entirelyoriginal. Moments like that do not occurvery often in jazz, and the phrase is thevery essence of Lester's beautiful style.

"I Cover the Waterfront" is taken ata medium tempo and is another marvel-lous example of how the soloist oughtto string together his phrases into oneextended statement. Lester's touch islight as thistledown, his conceptiongraceful and exquisite. In this track canbe seen the germs of the style which ledto later refinements like Getz and ZoolSims, Al Cohn and Wardell Gray.Readers may extend this list at leisure.

The "Lester Leaps in" shows a strongrelationship to the vintage recording of1937, especially in the way Lesterpatterns his stop -chorus effects, andalthough the technique is not so blitheas it had been in the good old days, itis still impressive enough. The othermusicians are once again probablesrather than established fact, but onceagain Esquire have left no stone unturnedin case one of the musicians was underone of them.

The list is Jesse Drake, trumpet, whodisplays a pleasant lyrical style on"Waterfront", Earl Knight, piano, whokeeps the harmonies not too avant-garde,just as Lester liked them, Gene Ramey,bass; and Lee Abrams, drums. Like theParker album, this one is indispensableto the connoisseur and the diligentcollector. B.G.

THE Young Tuxedo Brass Band, whichI heard in somewhat abbreviated

form as John Casimir's Young TuxedoJazz Band on St. Peter's St., in theFrench Quarter, is a famous operatingparade band. It hardly transfers to waxbecause the music it makes belongs tothe open air, not to a studio. Neverthe-less, like the Melodisc and Topic releasesof the old Eureka band, it remains adocument of great importance.

SLOWThe slow funeral music on the first

side is an acquired taste. It really belongsto a certain environment and to a certainsocial occasion. Away from it the impactis largely lost to the onlooker andlistener. The music springs to life in thesection called "Coming Back" climaxingwith "Joe Avery's Piece", a rumbustiousride -out with fierce Avery's tromboneand Wilbert Tillman's sousaphone in fine,swinging form.

This is early Negro jazz music withall the force and fire of the true original.

DJs have to play r & b,' saysGARY ANDERSON arrived last

week. He is small, about5 ft. 6 ins., very very quiet, almostreserved. Under his professionalname U. S. Bonds, which is nowbeing changed to Gary (U.S.)Bonds-" so that I can work inthe better night clubs. It looksclassier than just U.S. Bonds "-he has been responsible for someof the wildest sounds on disc oflast year.

It is. a sound that appears to be ofextremely low fidelity, recorded eitherin the open air or in a tin -roofedgarage, in the middle of a wild wildparty.

Over in this country, Gary's disc," Quarter To Three ", introducedthis to the Top Ten but in Americahe has had a whole string of like -sounding hits.

He considers himself a rhythm 'n'blues singer, but won't admit that hisvoice or the effects on his records aredoctored.

He explained about his sounds: " Iuse about four or five musicians. that'sall. It's not recorded in a park oranything like that but in a recordingstudio back home in Norfolk Vir-ginia.

" I agree about the party. I liketo sing as if I'm at a party. If Iget that approach, I pat myself onthe back because I feel like I'm ata party when I'm singing.

"Abodt the only thing doctored isthe double tracking. I use a lot ofthat on my records. But so do alot of other singers and I don't thinkI sound like anyone else.

" My manager, he thinks up allthese ideas for me, Mr. Frank Guida.He looks after the recording, too,and has a special gimmick of his ownthat he uses.

" He won't even tell me what thatis.

"He also thought up my name, forwhich I'm really grateful because a

lot of people knew my name beforethey knew me."

Gary admits to earning a lot ofmoney from his one-nighter tours andconsistent hit discs in America. " Butit's not a million dollars like theysay. And I've invested a lot of themoney in U.S. Bonds."

Which is quite natural.I questioned Gary on the recent

attacks by American dee jays onrhythm 'n' blues and rock 'n' roll,which was thinly disguised as pro-moting " good " music, marathonsessions of Sinatra, Ella, Como, etc.

He reacted tolerantly : " You'llnotice they've stopped doing it now.They realise that you have to give

U.S. Bonds!Gary is an acknowledged golfer,

shooting in the low 70s. He flung outa challenge to any disc jockies fora game with a side bet of 100 dollarsto go to charity. This is a favouritesport of his in America, where themoney gets paid, of course, in U.S.Bonds.

Someone suggested that PremiumBonds would be more suitable here.

Gary will, however, have to borrowsome golf clubs. He left his own

RHYTHM 'N' BLUES: IAN DOVEpeople what they want and they wantthis kind of beat music.

"America has a big market forrhythm 'n' blues now, far bigger thanit ever was. You can see this by thenumber of rhythm 'n' blues discs thatget into the charts.

"Although, of course, the Twist isthe really big thing now. And that isreally rhythm 'n' blues.

" I like Sinatra and those people,too. But not all the time. There'sa lot of room on the record scene,you know."

Pressed to name his favouritesingers, Gary admitted: " JackieWilson, Chubby Checker. And there'salways Ray Charles. What can yousay about that man. He's so big.

" I saw him for the first timebefore I left for England, at theAppollo, Harlem."

Gary himself works alone, apartfrom his regular accompanying group,Daddy Gee and the Church StreetFive. He prefers it this way.

" But I would like to play morenight clubs and such. This is whatwe'll be working on this year."

" Oh," he continued. "And I'mnot worried about getting my recordsound on stage. The organisers havetold me they've got a group thatsounds just like Daddy Gee and theChurch Street Five."

When I realised I had been beatenon those two hits in Britain, my firstthought was . . . well, damn it! ThenI thought again and realised it was acompliment. It meant that someone hadthought my work worthwhile.

" It did nothing for my wallet. Buta lot for my ego.

"And it COULD have been the otherway round. I think the fans have aperfect right to make up their minidswhich is best.

By the way, I'd like to set therecord straight about my views on rock'n' roll. I've been quoted as being anti -rock. I'm not. I'm for music in anyform just as long as it is good. Youcan have good rock, good folk, goodstandards, good anything that is music.

" For me there is a field of music,going from modern jazz to folk musicand including standards, in which I liketo work. That's my personal choice.They don't exactly FORCE me to workon commercial material-let's say theyjust persuade me.

" Back at the start, I had a quartetwhich worked with the Lionel Hamptonband. We did folk material, spirituals,rhythm and blues, jazz. I loved it.

" But it is no good working all thetime to feed your ego. That walletmatters as well.

" You know, I've honestly wanted tovisit Britain for the past ten years. Andthree years ago I virtually made up mymind to live in London. I'm interestedin ail forms of show business and itwas the brilliantly high standard of yourmovies which attracted me.

4,000 DOLLARS" Technically, they are way ahead of

anywhere in the world. That includescamera -work, scripts, acting . . . every-thing.

" I always hoped that when I finallydid make it to Britain I'd be able todo the sort of performance I believe in.But there I've had a disappointment.

" I understood I was having an 18 -piece orchestra to back me so I hadspecial arrangements of some very lovelynumbers done. Now I find we're work-ing with a six -piece group.

" I spent over 4,000 dollars on thosearrangements and now can't use them.That's another smack for my wallet.

"My background in music starts withthe church and gospel music, for myfather was a minister.

" I had my own vocal quartet, theEchoes of Joy, when I was still in juniorhigh school. I guess I was about 11then. I had to teach myself music butI've always wanted to develop and

recently I've spent a lot of time studyingvocal improvisation.

" For a while I was keen on thetrumpet but money got short and I hadto pawn the instrument, which cost 600dollars, for around 75 dollars. I nevergot around to redeeming the ticket-singing was going very well.

"Records started for me when I wassinging in Los Angeles in a place nowrun by Shelley Menne. Don Reardon,now my manager, was there and got mein with Liberty Records. You know,I still think my first disc was the best... a song called In Times Like These'.

" Of course, Hundred Pounds ofClay' struck me as a likely hit rightaway. It had been bouncing around forseveral years and nobody seemed towant it. I know that Pat Boone andDinah Washington both turned it down.

" Thing that knocks me out aboutBritain is the sports car industry. I'vealready got myself a T.R.4 and I wantto look over all the factories. Also Iwant to see and meet some of your topsingers.

" Me?-I go for Frank Sinatra, JoeWilliams, Sarah Vaughan and the lateBillie Holliday...They're all great but,with all modesty, I want to say thatmy ambition 's to be the best singer inthe business. I'm trying to learn allthe time . . . "

4 a.m.

DECISIONjT was four o'clock in the morning.

A Young Tony Victor woke with astart and decided, there and then, thathe would leave right away for Londonand try to persuade Joe Meek to givehim a break as a singer.

He arrived in London around break-fast time and spent the rest of the daysearching for Joe's RGM studios. Joewas chatting in the reception room whenTony eventually found the North Londondisc -production centre.

"I could see immediate potential inthe lad." says Joe now. "He had astriking personality, good looks andexcessive enthusiasm. So I gave him atest right away . . . and signed him to acontract".

Now Tony's debut disc is out for Decca- "Dear One" and "There Was ATime". The top side came about becauseDecca's Dick Rowe sent through thesong for Joe to "try" on Tony. It tookDecca just ten minutes to decide that thefinished product had definite hit potential.

Prior to his out -of -the -blue trip toLondon, Tony had worked as a shoesalesman, managing a local instrumentalgroup in his spare time.

Later he decided he would like to be-come a singer and took a job backstagein a big theatre to watch and study howexperienced artists worked.

WHAT IS JOE10E BROWN is 20. He is a Cockney.-1 His hair looks like the businessend of a well-worn shaving brush.He is a practical joker of nerve -shat-tering violence.

But what else IS he? What is hisrole in show business? How bestshould his advisers channel histalents?

My personal guess is that Joe shouldn'tbe here at all. He was born about thirtyyears too late. The days of the music-hal, would have been best for him, whenne could have rhyming -slanged his waythrough as a top of the bill comic,surrounded by performing dogs and two -spot dancers.

NATURALBut the fact is that Joe is a unique

" natural " even in his chosen field ofbig beat shows. Even though he standsout because of his refusal to kow-tow tothe usual pop -purveyors' habits.

Joe, I think, hasn't the foggiest ideawhat he really wants to do. Is he asinger or is he a clown, that perky -faced,sallow -checked Joseph Brown?

His last disc was " What A CrazyWorld We're Living In " and it sold125,000 copies without really denting theTop Twenty. It sold over a long period-that was the trouble.

Now he comes up for Pye Piccadillywith his first Country and Western -typedisc, "A Picture of You ", written forhim by his bass guitarist Peter Oakman.He's not so Cockney in tone and hits itoff peaceably enough with the choirs andstrings behind him.

Flip is back to normal " Layabouts'Lament ", written for him by CrazyWorld " composer ALAN KLEIN. Likea sort of young -faced BILLY BEN -NETT.

There is positively no point in inter-viewing Joe Brown. He tears off atevery available tangent and cannot benailed long enough for constructive viewson his own career

But . . . Joe broke through withMarty Wilde's "Boy Meets Girls " seriesand was promoted to leading personalityand comic. He starred in his own showat the Queen's, Blackpool. Then he wentto the Britannia Pier, Great Yarmouth.

His discs have included " DarktownStrutters' Ball", " Jellied Eels ", " PeopleGotta Talk Shine ", " CrazyWorld ", " Crazy Mixed-up Kid ".

UNIQUETV producers, especially Jack Good,

are convinced of Joe's exceptional talents.His disc company are dead sure that hewill make it really big soon-and they'rehappy to persevere Film producers areeyeing him with interest.

But somewhe-e along the line the wise-cracking Joe has missed out on the reallyBIG stardom which so many expertshave predicted for him.

I think it adds up to that fact that hereally doesn't know which way he wantsto develop. Certainly he is unique-but in these days of pigeon -holing ofperformers you can easily be so uniquethat you price yourself out of the busi-ness.

The latest news on Joe is that he maybe going to the States as the British halfof an exchange deal. I'm sure theAmericans would dig his outrageouslyCockney performances, his engaging grin!nd his serious musicianship.

WHENEVER a band that affects anEdwardian garb or plays roaring

Twenties -style music appears on themusic scene nowadays, the cry im-mediately goes up : " Cashing in onThe Temperance Seven."

Likewise with the Alberts and Pro-fessor Bruce Lacey, who do play themusic of the Twenties and earlier,who do prefer to wear Edwardiana,who do indulge in the same kind ofbasic humour.

The Alberts are Douglas Gray, hisbrother. Tony, and Prof. Lacey.Between them they play slide cornet, keybugle, one string phonofiddie, serpent,cornopean (a kind of cornet), tuba, bag-pipes, harp, contra bass, balalaika, andthe musical penny-farthing bicycle.

Prof. Lacey's speciality is vocalist,comedian and performer of " Show Methe Way To Go Home " on the spokesof the penny-farthing. If pressed, theycan also play " Ragtime Cowboy Joe "and include a solo on revolver

It's all part of The Alberts' theoryabout themselves. " We are really anextension of Victorian home entertain-ment. People were very serious aboutthe awful noise they made.

" There are still those terrible musichall comics and orchestras of the pottedpalm variety.

" That's what we poke fun at."Poking fun in The Alberts' manner

can occasionally be dangerous. " We'realways in Charing Cross Hospital withsplit fingers and suchlike." said TonyGray.

This is not through playing theirmusic, however, but from external effectslike placing flash powder in the bells oftheir instruments, for a surprise joke.Occasionally things go wrong, like thetime at the music hall in the EdgwareRoad when they set fire to a bassplayer's trousers, and the time when thenightclub had to be evacuated becausethe flash powder didn't flash but merelysmoked.

" It's all show business," said Tony,admitting that no insurance companywould chance their funds on The Albertsin cabaret.

" We don't believe our music shouldhe conventional. That idea is rubbish.Our kind of music, which I suppose isroughly jazz, can be played on anything.We just emphasise the satirical twist toit."

The image of Victoriana or Edward-iana - " We were the first Edwardianband of the present day "-persists inprivate life.

Bruce Lacey is a television propdesigner and painter-the Queen has oneof his etchings-who is an entertainerbecause he can " dress up, perform andshow off."

Prof. Lacey appeared in " The Run-ning, Jumping and Standing Still Film "with Peter Sellers.

Incidentally, for those interested, hekeeps a life-sized stuffed camel in thehall of his North London home.

He is the sole actor in " Dear Sir," afilm to be entered in this year's Edin-burgh Film Festival, but prefers to playwith his seven magic lanterns and col-lection of Victorian slides.

EDDY'S SOLD THIRTYTHIRTY million records sold is

quite a feat and figure. It's allthe more exceptional if you considerthat not many teenagers-or adultsfor that matter-in this country wouldprobably know the man responsiblefor this sales figure.

It is in fact EDDY ARNOLD,nicknamed the Tennessee Cowboy.

Eddy has a new disc out this week," Tears Broke Out On Me ", a folk -styled ditty that used the " Blue TailFly ", " Jimmy Crack Corn " tune as abasis. It was Abraham Lincoln's fav-ourite tune, although bearing in mindhow he liked his poetry thoroughlyserious, we don't think he'd dig the lyric.

On the disc can be heard the guitarwork of RCA -Victor's A. and R. chief,Chet Atkins, no mean disc seller himself.On the flipside, " I'll Do As Much ForYou " Floyd Cramer sits in on thepiano.

As befits his disc sales Eddy is aveteran in the disc world, a man whostill sings " When Your Hair Has TurnedTo Silver " in his act.

The point is, however, that Eddy intro-duced it!

consider the new impo -lanceplaced on these jiggly little bits ofmusic that set the theme for yourfavourite TV shows-because therewere FOUR of them in last week'sTop Twenty.

In the past, British publishers wouldnot touch them with the proverbialbarge -pole. The themes were tailoredto suit the mood of the programme... and to heck with possible disc -hitchances.

Not any more. Now the themes areconsidered very largely because of likelydisc impact.

For TV can build hits. If you heara theme, week by week, it impressesitself on the Great British Public's mind.it doesn't have to be by an establishedpop singing star. Usually the artist-isit Spence, Keating, Johnson, Paramor ?-isn't known until the buyer is en-lightened in the record shop.

So it is that these musical directors,backroom boys on vocal hit discs, arenicking their share of the Hit Paradeglory.

Last week, Johnny Keating's "Z -Cars"theme was in at Number Seven. Mr.Acker Bilk's " Stranger On the Shore "was 12-and was the ONLY telly -themeto make tit( American Top Hundred.

" Maigret " theme piece. There wasanother " Z -Cars " version, by NorrieParamor, kicksng around the 30 mark,too.

Grainer is one of the foremost andmost prolific of telly -theme writers.

But it is also a hugely unpredictablemarket.

Successes in the past, all well spacedout, included Elmer Bernstein's " JohnnyStaccato " melody-this jazz -laced seriesstarred John Cassavetes; and HenryMancini's " Peter Gunn "-an Americanseries which didn't see the light of dayhere.

Max Harris's " Gurney Slade " madeit. So did John Barry's " Juke BoxJury " opener -closer " Hit And Miss ".Laurie Johnson, with " Sucu Sucu ", didexceptionally well.

But " Candid Camera ", " Face ToFace ", " Dixon of Dock Green " and" M -Squad " were among the ones tomiss out.

Hardly makes sense, does it? Popu-larity of the telly -theme does not neces-sarily follow the Top Twenty ratings ofthe programme concerned.

And many orchestras and groups aremaking phrenetic efforts to get in onthe golden trail.

BIG CLICKBut the seem. is equally unpredictable

in the States. As 1 say, there is onlyONE in the Top HUNDRED-and that'sa British made piece from a British TVseries which isn't being shown in theStates. So TV exposure has nothing todo with Acker's triumph.

And yet the Americans have virtuallyall -day -round television from which theremust be hundreds and hundreds ofdifferent themes. They are recorded assingles, lots of them . . but a Top Fiftyrating is very rare indeed.

What the Americans go for are filmand stage show sound -tracks and inter-pretations on long -players. A recent list-ing showed TWELVE in the Top FiftyMonaural albums and FIFTEEN in theTop Fifty Stereo albums.

But nothing showing concerned withmusic specially written for the oldgoggle -box.

In London, Keith Prowse Music haveall the AR -TV telly numbers and reportthat the big -clicking themes are ridinghigh in sheet music sales as well as ondisc. Says executive Jimmy Phillips:" There has been a complete change ofattitude through the publishing business.

" No longer is there a feeling of cool-ness towards television as a majorplugging medium."

The only thing missing is the bigVOCAL theme, possibly sung over thecredits by a name star-as so oftenhappens in the cinema.

MILLIONRCA -Victor in the middle figures andwere aimed squarely at the Country andWestern market. His fame spread withappearances at Tennessee's top countrymusic show, the fabled " Grand OleOpry ".

His manager, Sam Wallace, has ex-plained their first meeting backstage atthe Opry shows: " I stood in the wingsto watch the faces of the crowd. Theauthentic flavour Eddy imparted to hismusic and the sincerity wirh which hesang endeared himself to everyone inthe house that night, just as they haveto millions of folk song lovers the worldover.

" Eddy loves people and people likehim."

Coming from Tennessee, Eddy is natur-ally referred to more than once as acowboy singe/. But Eddy draws the lineat wearing the traditional brightly huedgear that goes with the cowboy singer.

In fact he is against gimmicks of anykind, either sartorial or musical.

And it's paid off for Mr. Arnold.From beginning with a two dollar

guitar and local dances Eddy now runsa ranch, 107 acres of it, and his owntelevision show.

In his career he's made a couple ofHollywood pictures, been managed byCol. Tom Parker, present manager ofElvis Presley . . .

And, of course, sold thirty milliondiscs!

How come? Well, a few monthsago, while on his delivery round, hestopped at his opticians to pick up anew pair of horn -rimmed spectaclesand found himself being introducedto bespectacled Decca producer MIKESMITH. Mike was another customerof Brian's optician-fan-and they werebrought together on purpose.

Brian used to sing and whistle numbersduring his delivery round in Barking,Essex, as rehearsals for his evening showswith a five -piece rock group, theTremeloes.

He is also an accomplished soccerplayer and, at 18, had a trial for WestHam United against Manchester United.He also represented Essex county atfootball and swimming. And he hasstudied piano for four years and playsclassical music for " relaxation " awayfrom the rock scene.

OF ALL the pseudo folk -styled groups,the Kingston Trio and the Highway-

men do the best jobs-and possibly theLimeliters. too-as can be heard on" I'm On My Way ", a traditionalspiritual. It's sung in a simple anddirect way, a way that, however, lacksthe real excitement and swing that aNegro gospel group might give it. Butthis is the way the Highwaymen wantto sing and it is going up the chartsin America. Here? We don't think so.

Kentucky mountain ballad style, withbanjo to the fore, in a song of whiskeyand the men who drink . . . and thewomen, too. It drones on relentlessly.Use of the word " daddy -o " is used inthe same manner as " raggle-tagglegypsie-o " and not as in " Well, like,daddy -o, you don't dig! " We dig, how-ever, the Highwaymen.

WANDA IS called a country andwestern singer back home in America

but we are more purist about our pigeon-holes in this country. We'd class Wandain the same groove as Patti Page. Whichmeans she is a warmly emotional singerthat comes out best on a semi -slowballad. " If I Cried Every Time" is asemi -slow ballad. No further recom-mendations needed

Rock ballad is on the flip, whichWanda sings and drives up a storm witha chorus chanting rapidly away in thebackground. Exciting.

WITH a touch of "Whoa-oah-oah-woes" Ian sounds as if be's the one

who is doing all the weeping. One ofthose treatments that make you wonderjust what the human voice is capableof. If you wrote the lyric out phoneti-cally it would be amazing. Mr. Vinthas a hard voice that sounds ideal forthis material.

Mr. Vint calms down somewhat onthe other side and shows more of hisvoice and less of the eccentrics, althoughthe tune is faster. Ian could turn out tosome someone we won't forget.

All of which means that Alan Kleinand Joe-responsible for "What A CrazyWorld We're Living In"-have done itagain. A warm witty piece of modernfolk song (in the real sense) sungengagingly by Joe and backed by hisBruvvers. Should do as well and lastas long as "Crazy World". Joe has aspot of whistling once or twice.

Joe is more conventional on the flip.He has a jangling guitar accompanimentto an average rock 'n' country beatballad. Rating is for the top side.

BURL IVES Funny Way OfLaughin'; Mother Wouldn't Do It(Brunswick 05868)INIFTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Mr. Ives

here has a neat follow up to hishit song, "A Little Bitty Tear".Faster tempo but the mood is thesame. Burl's "Funny Way OfLaughin' " is really breaking downover the usual romantic troubleabout the girls leaving him. He evenmentions a "little bitty tear". You'dthink that at 52 Burl could get hisromantic life better organised.

Homely philosophy on the flip -"You can't tell a book by the cover,every girl you meet won't treat youlike your mother . . ." This is asituation we're quite happy aboutactually, but once again Burl isbrought down over his love life. Hisgirl has left him yet again.

That means in his last two discs,three times Burl's girl has upped andleft him. He's had a little bitty tearthat let him down, a funny way oflaughin' over it all and now he'scomplaining that his mother wouldn'tdo it.

As someone once remarked, all he'sgot now are his royalties to keep himwarm and he's cryin' all the way tothe bank. Cheer up, Burl, this onewill probably make the charts andyou know how the girls dig TopTwenty stars!

BILLY FURY Last Night WasMade For Love; A King ForTonight (Decca F 11458)MR. FURY drops his rhythm 'n'

blues act for three minutes onhis latest disc to give out with aclassy ballad that is delivered againsta background of crashing drums andsoaring strings.

But he can't resist a touch of wild-ness, a few snarls and groans to jerkyou out of your seat. If you dug theBilly Fury on "Jealousy" then this isyour meat. Should be a big one forBill to celebrate getting the key ofthe door with.

The flip is more of a rocker andfeatures Billy together with hisunusual way of pronouncing certainvowels. Rousingly effective.

naturally very pronounced in thebackground while Brian sings the plain-tive melody in a wistful voice. Goodsong and pleasant treatment althoughthe chanting voices behind Brian get alittle wearisome.

Brian gets his teeth into the routinefast twister on the flip in which he in-for.ms his lady love that she's got to twistbefore he is likely to embrace her - orwords to that effect. Exciting.

A promising debut.

hit for this folky duo-comes "TheTears Break Out On Me". Competitionhere comes from Eddy Arnold but Mikiand Griff manage to sound distinctivealthough their treatment is very simple.Good country song material, in thetradition, composed by Hank Cochran.

Country singer Hank Snow wrote theflip, a faster item that sounds almost atypical CAW song. Nice touch with theguitars on the arrangement.

DISCTONY VICTOR Dear One; ThereWas A Time (Decca 11459)SLIGHT TOUCH of the Eden Kanes

from Mr. Victor making his debutdisc but he puts over a rockin' littleitem with a lot of verve and power. Infact he gets quite wild towards the finish.There's a spot of piano and a lot offiddles.

Flipside is slower but the approach isthe same. On the right song Mr. Victorwould be one to watch.

TYPICAL SCOTTISH TRAD. By thatwe mean traditional Scottish airs

telling a story. In this case the BrothersAlexander are backed by a jauntyaccordion. The flip is more of the same.Put a couple of claymores down on thecarpet and jig away.

PAT BOONE Quando QuandoQuando; Willing And Eager(London HLD 9543)HERE IS the first fruits of Pat's

West Hampstead recording ses-sion with the orchestra conducted byMalcolm Lockyer. It's a Latin tunesung quietly by Pat. The lyric issound, the arrangement pleasant andnot too obtrusive. All in all itshould quietly creep into the charts.

"Willing and Eager" is Pat's col-laboration with composer RichardRodgers and comes from Pat's newfilm "State Fair". A good loveballad although not a great one.

more. Mr. Ben E. King is one ofthe stylists of today's song scene and itis an injustice that he isn't more popularover here. A very good song that is putover emotionally aided by a chorus andanswer arrangement. A record that pullsBen out of the doldrums, song wise.

Very off beat story line for the flip,all about the hermit who dispenses adviceto the love lorn like some woman'smagazine. He is aided in his advice,however, by a rocking piano and abetter -than -average tune. Ben sings verywell, too, but the lyric is really tooridiculous to get anywhere.

OVERA dum-de-dum-dum rhythm that

is quietly effective Brian sings hisvarient on the theme that he met hisdestiny in the middle of a crowd, whichcould be interpreted as meeting his birdat the football match, we suppose. How-ever, Brian's voice indicates that it'smore romantic than that and we goalong with him. Good voice but thetune meanders a little.

French horn sound for a pulsatingballad (the type of song that FrankieLaine used to blast out!) that Brian singspowerfully.

If you don't like Stan thendig this.

Stanley rejigs "The Sorcerer's Appren-tice" on the flip. The backing groupwail at faster tempo. They ought to benamed on the label.

Takes a little getting used tobecause of those basic differences inconstruction ... but after the secondor third play it was with us for ever.Jerry's voice is fluent, flexible andpleasantly -toned. If this gets the playsit deserves, it'll be a hit.

"Second Hand Dream" is anotherfirst-class song. Touch of the old"singing from the heart" from Jerry,with choir, strings and overall solidityin the background. In a more familiarmould, it is likely to become over-awed by the top side.

Thosesatiny, smoochy tones literally envelopthe lyrics and wring out the last drop ofsincerity. Full backing, string dominated,nice simple theme, all lightness andbrightness.

We do go a lot on this single. Does"Aunt Rhody" a well known Negro that mean it won't make the charts?

folk song about a grey goose that has "The More I see You" is an old -been done by such diverse personality established ballad. worked over in thefolk singers as Lonnie Donegan and past by virtually everybody who is any-Leadbelly. The Springfields turn in a body. Nat does a great job. And singsbright bouncy treatment. the verse first, which is a change. Lovely

performance.

Let's stick with REPRISE andnumber R.6007 in particular for atrip to another part of the world.This time the country is the Argentineand we are introduced to the"Passionate Valentino Tangos" asplayed by Francisco Cazador and hisBarcelona Caballeros.

The Valentino in the title is noneother than Rudolph Valentino, who

And incidentally every time I lookat the cover of this Kenton album Iwant to take out my handkerchiefand wipe the tear from the face ofthe young lady who decorates it sobeautifully.

CAPITOL again and this time it isthe turn of the ladies as we listen tosongstress Mavis Rivers. Twelvebeauts of songs sung in most delight-ful manner. I enjoyed the Dick Rey-nolds accompaniment, too. Numberis T.1408.

Let's give CAPITOL their money'sworth by mentioning a smooth albumwhich can be classified as dance and/or jazz music. The maestro in ques-tion is Benny Goodman and a bunchof his hits are recreated some im-proving with age, others losing a littleof their edge. However the magicsounds which flow from Benny'sclarinet are good enough for me atany time. Let's see how you enjoythem. 7.1514.

Sticking to jazz for the last offeringwe have something else out of thearchives as we listen to the ACE OFHEARTS reissue of the famous "JustJazz" concert presented by GeneNorman. Lionel Hampton plus theAll-stars are featured in four swing-ing tracks on AH 19. Great stuff.

these strangely uncomfortable mixedbags where the serious collector mustbuy long tracks he dislikes to get afew worthwhile songs for his collection.

In India Helen Shapiro is at No. 1with her " Fell Me What He Said ",while Bill Haley has taken " SpanishTwist" to No. 6. Gary Mills is at num-ber ten with his " I'll Step Down ".

Israel has Cliff topping the chart,while Elvis Presley sings " No More "and reaches No. 4.

In Italy Nancy Sinatra is at No. 4with her "Like I Do", while Danny andThe Juniors reach No. 10 with their" Twistin' U.S.A."

Three British records in Norway's hitlists, Helen Shapiro's " Tell Me WhatHe Said " at No. 6, while The Shadowsand Cliff are at places No. 8 and 9 withtheir discs.

Last but not least is Spain, And theonly discs that aren't home-grown areall by Paul Anka. He's got his" Quiereme Muy Fuerte " at No. 1,

SHADOWS' SENSATION:

JET HARRIS QUITS!JET HARRIS, bass guitarist with Britain's No. 1 instrumental group, the

Shadows, has left the quartet - to branch out by himself as an actor -singer.

Jet quit the Shadows on Sunday. His replacement for this top job in popmusic is 21 -year -old railway fireman, Brian "Liquorice" Locking, fromGrantham, Lincolnshire.

Jet was one of the founder -members of the group. For his solo career hewill have Jack Good as recording manager and artistic director. Jack toldthe NRM: "I have long felt that Jet has a great future both as an actorand a singer.

"Now is the time, I feel, for himto strike out on his own. This decisionhas been arrived at after long talkswith Jet's personal manager PeterGormley."

Peter Gormley added: "The lastthing the boys and myself wish to dois stand in the way of Jet realisinghis ambition.

He has the good wishes of Hank.Bruce, Bryan, Cliff and myself for amost successful future."

MORE JUDYFOLLOWING the "fantastic" success

of the "Judy Garland at CarnegieHall" two -disc album, Capitol Recordsin America have recorded the songstar "live" at New York's ManhattanCenter before an invited audience ofsome 3,000 entertainment - worldpersonalities.

Judy's previous "in -person" album hasbeen in the best-selling charts in Americafor the past 38 weeks.

For the Manhattan Center, Judy willinclude a dozen songs never beforerecorded by her. Mort Lindsay, whoconducted the orchestra for the Carnegieset, will again be musical director.

NEW NAMESTWO new names have been added to

the Jerry Lee Lewis tour, whichstarts at Newcastle -on -Tyne on Sundaynext. They are Danny Storm, PyePiccadilly singer, and Decca's be-spectacled Buddy Britten. Both will usetheir own backing groups.

Presley has the best-selling LP with"Blue Hawaii" and was also the best-selling male vocalist. Best-selling girlsinger was Connie Francis-and themost promising female vocalist wasnamed as Linda Scott.

Best-selling hit single was "Big BadJohn" by Jimmy Dean.

Other awards included: Bob Newhart,as best-selling comedy artist; best-selling vocal group, Mitch Miller andthe Gang-and this group, with "SingAlong With Mitch Miller", was namedthe best-selling LP record proposition.

VIC LEWIS, of William Vic-tor Productions, leaves for New

York on Thursday (April 28) this week-and the main reason is to talk overplans to bring Johnny Mathis back toBritain towards the end of the year.

Vic told the NRM : " I also want tohave a look around New York again,take in some shows ... but the mainpoint will be with Johnny."

Afterwards, Vic Lewis goes on to LosAngeles, where he will start negotiationsto bring Nat "King" Cole to Britainfor concert and television dates.

BANNED DISC SELLSB. BUMBLE AND THE

STINGERS' disc, " NutRocker," is one of the fastest sell-ing American records this year andone of the fastest ever, reports Mr.Arthur Muxlow, EMI executive.

In one day last week salestotalled 17,000 and already afterjust over one week's release thesales figure is 70,000.

Yet the disc has been given thesilent treatment by the BBC. Apartfrom an airing on " Juke BoxJury," it has received no air plays.Reason is that " Nut Rocker " isbased loosely on Tchhaikovsky's" Nutcracker Suite " and comesunder the BBC's restricted list.

COLOUR MUSICAL FOR FURYBILLY FURY spent his 21st birthday making final preparations for his visit

to America, including finalising arrangements to meet Elvis Presley inHollywood.

"I have to present him with an award", said Billy who left on Good Fridaywith his manager Larry Parnes for his five -week vacation.

Said Mr. Parnes: "It will mainly be a holiday although we will be talkingto producers in Hollywood about a film for Billy.

"It will be made in Hollywood, and should be a colour musical speciallywritten for Billy."

Billy added: " We'll be visiting NewYork, Hollywood, Miami and Chicago,I want to hear some of this Negrochurch music, gospel music, at first-handif I can.

" Apart from meeting Elvis, I wantto try and see Ray Charles, and gospelsinger Mahalia Jackson."

Billy Fury has just finished a 55 -nighttour of one-night stands, " The Big StarShow Of 1962." Manager Parnes de-

scribed it as " Our most successful showso far." He promised another mammothseven -week, 50 -night, tour starring Billyfor the autumn.

" There will be nine stars, all topnames on the bill," he said.

This tour starts on September 30.Meanwhile Billy starts a summer

season at the Windmill Theatre, GreatYarmouth, on June 8 for 14 weeks.

Appearing with him are the Karl

Denver Trio, Marty Wilde, Chic Mur-ray, the Vernons Girls, Alan Field, Pete;Jay and the Jaywalkers, and 161 -year -old dancer Daryl Quist,

" This won't be a purely rock show,"said Mr. Parnes. " It will be a very bigspectacular show that is costing us£50,000 to put on. I'm having specialsets designed."

Larry Parnes is also presenting at theBritannia Pier at Yarmouth - for thethird year running-a " Sunday SpecialShow."

It starts July 8 and stars Karl Denverand John Leyton with Shane Fenton,Tommy Bruce, Ricky Valance, and theJaywalkers.

When Billy Fury returns from Americahe will tape a series of 13 shows fromRadio Luxembourg, his third in theseries.
