Boaters who made the annual trek to Coles Point Plantation had a real “hot” time this year…courtesy of Mother Nature. In spite of some stifling hot and humid weather, it was another fun event, as always, coordinated by George Brown. George

deserves a big round of applause for keeping up the tradition started by his father and for making each year better and better.

A total of 15 boats made the trip down river—Dave Curry made the trip “down highway” in his camper—and we all en-joyed the weekend socializing, tubing, or just floating in the pool. The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday afternoon crab feast, with plenty of “Yellow Birds” to keep us all hydrated! We even had the pleasure of celebrating the 17th wedding

anniversary of Commodore Chris Ruckman and Diane Wilson.

If you did not make it down to Coles Point this year, take a look at the pictures in this issue of the Beacon to see a bit of what you missed. While you are at it, go ahead and mark your calendar for the last weekend of August 2008 so you can be

SPOTLIGHT ON NEW MEMBERS Submitted by Marge Skelly

VIN and CHRISTINE VASSALLO with their children Patrick (10) and Pia (61/2) relocated from Melbourne, Australia to the Mt. Vernon area in July of 2006. Vin is employed by Transurban (USA) Development, Inc. with offices on Prince St. in Alexandria. They joined MVYC this past spring. While in Australia they spent most of their free time on the shores & out on the waters of Port Philip Bay. They are mem-bers of the Camerons Bight Boat Club (an affiliate of Blairgowrie Yacht Club) as well as members of the McCrae Yacht Club. They are proud owners of a 21 ft. Sloop ('Black Magic') which they keep on a swing mooring in Cameron Bight during the Australian sailing season. Having survived their first northern hemisphere winter, which was the first time the children had seen snow, they were eager to get outside & enjoy the activities at MVYC, This delightful family has jumped right in, attending the Power Fleet gathering at Union Street Pub in May and the "Welcome New Members Party" in June. They were both very good sports & Christine impressed everyone with her very skilled hula. Patrick & Pia joined the Swim Team & thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie along with their parents, making some good friends along the way. Vin says they all have been made to feel very welcome here at MVYC & appreciate that "many hands make light work" and are willing to "bend our backs" as needed. That's the spirit!

When I saw the slate proposed by the Nominating Committee to serve on MVYC’s Board next year, I couldn’t help but smile. Once again, the Committee has crafted an outstanding group of volunteers that represents a broad spectrum of our membership: men and women, power boaters and sailors, long-time members and not-so-long, parents, swim team enthusiasts and more. I hope everyone will attend the November meeting to show support for the candi-

dates.

The Nominating Committee deserves a special round of applause. Jim Borches, Peter Esser, Claire Grande, Evelyn Hewitt and Jack Sanders really stepped up to the plate. And the efforts of Committee Chair Bonnie Breneman, who al-

ready volunteers so much time on the Membership Committee, deserves special thanks.

I am enjoying serving as Commodore so much that I can’t believe we’re already talking about nominations, elections – and even the Commodore’s Ball. As Mary McGowan’s article reminds us, November is right around the corner. The Commodore’s Ball is our chance to recognize the contributions made by so many people each and every year; not to men-

tion the fact that we get to see each other wearing our finest attire, and can dance the night away!

One last note: have you seen the beautiful plantings around the Club lately? Mary Galloway, Rear Commodore Bill

Gard, and others have done a stunning job.

COMMODORE’S BALL 2007 - BE SURE TO CATCH IT! Submitted by Mary McGowan

Mount Vernon Yacht Club’s most elegant annual event is fast approaching. This year’s Commodore’s Ball will take place on Saturday, November 3 from 6pm – midnight at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Be sure to mark your calendars

for a ball !!!

The evening begins at 6pm with a social cocktail hour and appetizers. Photos will be taken of all guests as they arrive, providing a wonderful memento of the evening. The Commodore’s Ball is a black tie optional event --- very accommo-dating as it provides the opportunity to dress up in formal attire for those who wish to have a reason to wear that special gown or tuxedo, yet is not mandatory. History shows that approximately half of the attendees annually enjoy the evening

in less formal (business) attire.

The Mount Vernon Country Club will serve a delicious surf and turf dinner beginning at 7pm, accompanied by a salad and yummy dessert. As always, special thought and care are in the works for the elegant table arrangements enjoyed throughout the evening. Joe Fitzgerald, Master of Ceremonies for the evening, will no doubt have the crowd roaring with his terrific wit. Jerry Skelly has agreed to man the flags for the Change of Watch Ceremony. Commodore Chris Ruckman will provide thanks and bid farewell to departing MVYC Board members, and will welcome aboard newly elected Board

members.

Following the ceremony, your feet will tingle with the desire to dance as the disc jockey begins to play your favorite tunes and gets the floor hopping. Last year's dancing lasted well beyond midnight and the disc jockey had to be coerced into staying late. The accompanying photo from last year’s Ball tell the story...fun, fun, fun. Please join your fellow club members for this special annual event. It is a truly wonderful way for members to express appreciation to those volunteers who have done such an outstanding job supporting the yacht club this past year, and to share a very exciting evening with new and old friends. Plus, we

all clean up so well (I mean our looks!).

Formal invitations will arrive in the near future.

$55 per person. Be sure to RSVP early.

The Boating season is beginning to wind down; soon boats will start disappearing for the winter. For those hearty souls the month of October is a great time to take a slow cruise, watch the leaves turn, and enjoy these crisp sunny days on the water. The cost of fuel has been dropping all summer - take advantage of the low prices and get out there and enjoy the river. Everyone should give Al Grande a BIG "thank you" for

managing our fuel dock so well this season. Thanks Al.

We have invested in some signage to be placed around the property to more easily guide members around the marina. We have signs to mark the trailer parking area - always a source of questions. We have signs to mark the end of the boat ramp that also remind members not to power their boats onto the trailers. Reflective "No Wake" signs have been placed on the

Dolphin making it more visible at night and providing another reminder to our neighbors to slow down.

Several volunteers assisted in a marina cleanup operation on September 15th, helping to remove the weeds that inhabit the bulkheads along our dock areas. Ernie Dauray, Bill Gard, Rick Mullins and Bonnie Breneman helped the marina chairs remove growth along a majority of the inner basin and along the fuel dock. Some areas were not accessible behind boats on Inner and Outer W docks. If boat owners in those spaces can reach the weeds or small trees protruding from the bulk-head please remove them; it improves the appearance of the marina and helps preserve the bulkheads. Thanks Ernie,

Bonnie, Rick and Bill for helping out with this task.

We would like to thank Jim Borches and Bill Gard for installing a backflow preventer for the water supply to E dock. The rest of the docks are protected by a backflow preventer in the pool room. We would also like to thank Jack Ferris for his assistance in getting the hydrilla harvester to come through our creek and marina, Jack has been talking to the council of governments all summer to ensure that we do not get bypassed. Hopefully they will already have been through by the

time this is published.

See you on the river.

Aww…summer is officially over. We finished it off after the pool closed with a delightful doggy swim hosted by Jackson and Wrigley and their owners JB & BG. Great job, boys! Some dogs swam, some just played, and some sniffed and escaped. In all cases, fun was had by both four-legged and two-legged partici-

pants. Thank you, Jim.

Between the time this article is submitted and publication I have seen in my crystal ball that there was a fabulous Fall Cruise put together by Gene Diotalevi and Mark Barbaro on Sep. 22.

All indications say that it was a hit. More on that at a later date.

Oktoberfest is coming soon (Oct. 13). Don’t forget to confirm your reservations by Oct. 4 with Lauren Bazel. Peter Esser and Stefan Tahmassebi have promised to fill our bellies with brats & beer and our heads with music to remember. Bring

your steins and prepare to have fun!

I have heard from reliable sources that Russell Poe will seriously attempt an Oyster Roast at the Point on Oct. 20. Let’s

give him some support on this ... sounds like a great idea to us!

The Oct. 26 TGIF will be a Halloween theme hosted by Revae Moran. Be sure to come in costume. Trick or Treat ????

The following day, Oct. 27, there will be a Children’s HalloweenHalloween Party. Bring your carved pumpkins and dress in cos-

tume, kids. There will be prizes and a bonfire (weather permitting)

Next month we don’t want you to miss honoring our Commodore and the outgoing and incoming Board members at the

Commodore’s Ball, Nov. 3 at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Please get your reservations in early!!

Also coming up are the Adult Christmas Party (Dec. 8) and the Children’s Christmas Party (Dec. 9, with Santa Claus.)

We are also looking for anyone interested in hosting, co-hosting or just leading a committee for our annual New Year’s Eve

Party. Please give us a call if it could be you!

TGIF’s are still every Friday; we are always looking for someone to host. Please call Joan Jones if you are interested (703TGIF’s are still every Friday; we are always looking for someone to host. Please call Joan Jones if you are interested (703--

NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT Submitted by Bonnie Breneman

The 2007 Nominating Committee presents the following candidates for the 2007-2008 Board of Trustees: Commodore Chris Ruckman

Vice Commodore Bill Gard Rear Commodore John Mitchell Secretary Karan Cerutti

Treasurer Anthony Moran

Director Juliette Clark Director Peter Esser

Director Susan Fitzgerald The Committee considered every member who personally volunteered or who was suggested by another member. In selecting our nominees, we sought to provide the membership with a balanced slate, accounting for club longevity and participation, family and personal interests, as well as vocational and avocational background. In addition to compiling this slate of nominees, we have compiled quite an impressive list of volunteers for consideration by future nominating committees. Brief biographies and photos of the Committee's nominees, along with those of any nominees from the floor, will be published before the election in November. The MVYC Bylaws call for the Nominating Committee to provide a list of nominees to the Secretary at least seven (7) weeks before the November election meeting. The Bylaws also call for nominations from the floor at the October membership meeting. To provide the membership with an open and informed election, the Commodore and the Nominating Committee request the following for nominations from the floor:

1. The permission of the nominee, i.e., if a nominee cannot be present at the October membership meeting, s/he should provide written confirmation of willingness to serve.

2. A brief biography and photo for publication at least fifteen (15) days prior to the November election meeting. These must be given to the Nominating Committee chair no later than 15 October 2007 to meet the publication deadline.

3. Nominations may be made orally or in writing. 4. Nominations do not require a second.

The nominations will be closed after nominations from the floor on October 4, 2007. Submitted by the 2007 Nominating Committee Bonnie Breneman, Chair Jim Borches Peter Esser Claire Grande Evelyn Hewitt Jack Sanders
