A 175 hp Verado installed on a Numo 650 console boat, a 225 hp installed on a Brig 645 rib and a 300 hp installed on a Valiant 750 rib. This somewhat limited but widely used engine range in combination with conventional and modern boat models gave us the ability to measure some performance parameters. The test runs were performed on flat water. A while ago the challenge for Mercury was to design the perfect outboard, which led to the birth of the Verado concept. During the development everything was questioned. High reliability, excellent performance, low fuel consumption and reduced noise were the important topics when building this concept. The smaller Verado models from 150 to 200 hp have four-cylinder four-stroke engines. The larger power rates from 225 to 350 hp have six-cylinder four-stroke engines. Not only includes the Verado concept engines, it also formed the base for a new electro-hydraulic control system, as well as a digital throttle and shift system called "Smart Craft." A kind of computer-controlled fly-by-wire system that has proven its functionality and reliability almost for a decade. Other positive elements are the maintenance-free valve mechanism and a unique soundproof inlet. The air intake system ensures a pleasant sound and ensures that the sound is reduced with 14 decibels. According to Mercury Factory the Verado's are the quietest engines in their class, something we can agree, based on our experience during the test runs.
