NAVIGATING THE BOAT SHOWFROM STEM TO STERN
Attending the Fort LauderdaleInternational Boat Show can beoverwhelming unless you have aplan.
With six sites, more than 1,200exhibitors andmiles of docks, youneed tobeprepared soyoucangetthemost value and enjoyment outof the show.
When togo: The firstthing youneed to deter-mine is whichday or days togo.
The showalways openson a Thurs-day, which isknown asPrime TimePreview. If
youwant tobeamong the
first several thousand people tosee the show, then you’ll pay theprime-timeprice of $36per ticket.
If being first isn’t an issue, butyou are looking to make a majorpurchase, then a two-day ticketfor $38 is your best bet. Good forany two of the next four days oftheshow, it allowsyoutocompari-son shop for a boat, engine, elec-tronics, safety gear, jewelry, art-work or clothing, then come backafter you’ve had time to processeverything and make a final deci-sion.
Thursday is often quite busy atthe show, but Saturday and Sun-day are traditionally the busiestdays.Monday is the least crowdedday and some exhibitors offer re-ducedpriceson their goods just so
they don’t have to pack them upand lug themback home.
What to wear: You want todress comfortably for the show.On a hot and sunny day at theoutdoor venues, you’ll want light-weight clothing, a hat and sun-screen — you’d be surprised howscorched you can get walkingalong the docks. If you’re stayingin the air-conditioned BrowardCounty Convention Center, youdon’t have toworry about that.
You alsowant towear comfort-able shoes because you might bedoing a lot of walking. If you planon going on boats, you’ll wantshoes that are easy to take off andput back on because most exhibi-tors will not let you wear shoes —even boat shoes — on their boats. If you’rewearing socks, make surethey’re clean anddon’t haveholes.
Ticket savings: It’s best to buyyour boat show tickets in advance.By getting them online at show-management.com, you won’thave to wait in line to buy them atthe show, plus you’ll save $2 perpurchase (so an adult ticket is $18instead of $20 and the two-dayticket is $36). Click on the IGFASchool of Sportfishing seminarson the boat show website for aneven bigger discount.
Parkandcruise:Getting to theshow can be easy or maddening. The basic rule of thumb is to parkas far away from the Bahia MarYachting Center, which is theheart of the show, as youcan. StateRoad A1A by Bahia Mar is usuallyjammedwith cars and so is South-east17thStreetCausewaynear theconvention center, which has aparkinggarage that fillsupearly inthe day.
The best options are to parkoff-site at War Memorial Audito-rium or in downtown Fort Lau-derdale and take one of the freeshuttle buses to the show. Thebuses start running at 9 a.m., anhour before the show opens eachday, and continue until an hourafter the showcloses each day.
The most enjoyable way to getto the show is by parking in one ofthecityorprivate lotsorgaragesattheLasOlasRiverfront and takingthe free riverboat to Bahia Mar.The riverboat captains often pro-vide an entertaining and inform-ative narrative of the route’s his-tory andhomes.
Get connected:Once you’re atthe show, you can map out theexhibitors you want to see withthe show program. Or, if you havean iPhone or Android smartphone, you can download the freeMyBoatShowapp.
The app lets you search forboats by name, specifications andsize, as well as search for exhibi-tors, manufacturers and product

categories. The app also hasmapsof the show, seminar information, restroom locations and showtransportation schedules. You caneven use it to buy boat show tick-ets.
Don’t miss: The docks alongthe Intracoastal Waterway have

Course of action
Family FunHow do you keep spouses and kids happy at the
boat show? You go where you know they’ll seethings that they like. If you’re serious about buying aboat, but they’re not interested in the process, leavethe negotiations for another day.
Instead, take everyone on the free riverboatride from the Las Olas Riverfront to Bahia Mar. Afteryou arrive, let the family gawk at the spectacularsuperyachts lined up along the face dock. Then youcan move on to whatever type boats interest thefamily — sportfishermen, high-performance, inflat-ables, trawlers or cruisers.
Plan to have lunch at Bahia Mar’s food court, where everyone can get something to suit his or hertastes. Then head toward the boat show’s mainentrance. Along the way, you’ll be able to peruseand purchase clothing, boat shoes, fishing tackle, sunglasses, jewelry, coolers and art .
If the kids are into fishing, and they’re ages 5-16,catch a shuttle bus to the Broward County Conven-tion Center so they can attend one of the freeKids Fishing Clinics, which are at noon and 2 p.m.Saturday and Sunday. They’ll get fun, low-key in-struction in casting, knot-tying and conservation.
Afterwards, they can stroll through the BlueWild Dive and Travel Show in the lobby of theconvention center, where exhibitors offer everythingfrom dive instruction and scuba gear to speargunsand dive destinations. Marine artists and photogra-phers display their work.
Serious boatersThe best thing about the boat show for someone
serious about buying a boat is the opportunity tocomparison shop. Imagine being able to go carshopping and being able to check out three differ-ent makes of automobile in one dealer’s showroom. That’s the beauty of the boat show.
If you’re in the market for a center console fishingboat, you can compare the features and prices ofthree or four or more similar models. Get in theboats and study their layouts, sit at the helms, open the hatches and lean against the gunwales.
Likewise for a sportfisherman or trawler or su-peryacht: Climb aboard, walk around, sit down andfigure out what you like and don’t like. Sometimesyou can arrange for a test drive with a similar boatthat’s not in the show, but in most cases you’llschedule that sea trial after the show.
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, youcan negotiate prices. Before you get to that point, you can determine your financing options withany number of lenders at the show and find out howmuch insurance will cost. You can price a new boatlift if you live on the water or secure a slip in amarina.
You can also procure accessories for your newboat: Everything from an anchor and autopilot tofishing tackle and furniture to a stereo system andsafety gear.
A divided coupleYou love being on the water, but your partner
would rather be somewhere else. Should the two ofyou go to the boat show together? Of course.
Your partner might not care about boats, but it’sfun to take in the sights and people-watch. Anddon’t forget the benefits of sharing your observa-tions while walking hand-in-hand along the dockson a sunny autumn day.
There are plenty of things to see and buy at theshow besides boats. Start with some of the world’sbest marine wildlife artists and then you canshop for accessories. Guy Harvey’s booth is in theentrance tent at Bahia Mar. There, in addition to hisoriginals and prints, you can buy all types of prod-ucts featuring his art work. Next to Harvey is sculp-tor David Wirth’s booth. Wirth hand-carves marinelife such as fish and seahorses from wood. He alsofashions Hawaiian circle hooks from wood as well asother materials. Carey Chen’s booth is close by andstocked with his original paintings, prints and gi-clees.
Whether you spend time on a boat or not, boatshoes are always in fashion and there are plenty ofbooths where you can buy a pair. The Capt. Harry’sFishing Supply booth at Bahia Mar has a variety offootwear styles ranging from sneaker types to flipflops, as well as several different makes of shirts andhats along with fishing tackle. Quality sunglassesare another essential item and the show has plentyof those, too. Capt. Harry’s sells Costa sunglassesand Sunglass Haven in the entrance tent has manydifferent brands.
Fantasy buyersEver wonder what would you do if you won the
lottery? If you’ve dreamed about cruising aroundthe world, the boat show is the perfect place tosee just how far your imaginary winnings could takeyou.
Walk the docks on the Intracoastal Waterway atBahia Mar, the Swimming Hall of Fame and Las OlasMarina to see how big a boat you could buy if youhit a big jackpot. Megayachts — boats over 80 feet— and superyachts — boats over 100 feet — canrange in price from $5 million to $50 million.
In most cases, you’d probably be happy to ownthe yacht’s tender, which is often a rigid inflatableor flats skiff. Visit the TrawlerPort at Bahia Marfor a less expensive, seaworthy option for cruising. You can’t bring as many toys with you as you can onthe superyachts, but you’ll travel in comfort andoften in groups. An even more affordable option isto charter a boat for a week or two. You can pick upa boat locally and sail off with it or fly to a resortdestination and hop aboard a yacht that has acaptain and crew to attend to your every need.
To complete your fantasy, you’ll need to look thepart. At the very least, you should be able to pick upa captain’s hat if not a blue blazer, a puffy shirt anda pair of khakis.

Technology is evolving sodramatically that the prod-ucts on display at this year’sboat showcomparedwith theitems of a fewyears ago are asdifferent as today’s boats arefrom the ones sailed byChristopherColumbus.
Case in point: You canrun some boats with yoursmartphone or tablet andyou canuse those devices tocheck on your boat whenyou’re not there.
Suzuki’s innovative out-board motors (suzukima-rine.com) are so good thatabout the only thing thatcan slow them down is theperson using them. So thecompany has tweaked sev-eral of its four-stroke en-gines to make them runsmarter.
Several models remindyou when it ’s time tochange the oil and cause alight to blink in addition tosounding an alarm whenwater pressure is low. Su-zuki’s selective rotationDF250AP has a new lowerunit thatallowsyoutoeasilychange the propeller rota-tion.
What that means is aboater with twin Suzukioutboards needs to carryonly one spare propeller in-stead of both a regular- andcounter-rotating prop. That’s great forboaterswhotravel to places where find-ing a replacement prop isdifficult. All they have to dois put on the spare prop, takeoff themotor’s cowling, switch out plugs for theprop’s rotation and they’reready to go.
Suzuki also reduced the
weight of its 15- and20-horsepower portablemotors, which are fuel-in-jected but don’t need a bat-tery to start, and runsmoothly and efficiently. The new115 and140modelsalso weigh less than lastyear’s versions, plus theyhave a new cowling designthat improves air flow intothe engine.
Suzukimodelsareondis-play throughout the show, however, for the best infor-mation check out the Su-zuki booth at the BrowardConventionCenter.
Lehr (golehr.com), ondisplay at Bahia Mar, is in-troducing its new9.5-horsepower propane-powered outboard to goalong with its 2.5- and5-horse models. Just attacha propane canister like theones youuse for camping or
hook up a 20-pound pro-pane tank like you use foryour gas barbecue grill.
Among thenewelectron-ics at the convention centeris Humminbird’s revolu-tionary 360 imaging depth-finder (humminbird.com),which doesn’t let you missanything around your boat,whether it’s a school of fish,a wreck or a rockpile. Low-rance’s new HDS Gen2Touch displays (low-rance.com) feature easy touse,wider screens.
Owners of sailboats andsportfishingboats inneedofelectric power but with nota lotof roomtospare shouldcheck out Fischer Panda’snew4200ECOmarinegen-erator (fischerpanda.com)at BahiaMar.
The small, lightweight, quiet diesel generator is de-signed for sailboats 36-42
feet and powerboats 30-36feet. It features a new front-mounted direct-drive rawwater pump, which makesmaintenance easier, and afive-year limitedwarranty.
In the electronics tent,ACR Electronics (acrar-tex.com)hasanewpersonal
locator beacon that floats. That makes the 5.4-ounce,4.5-inch tall ResQLink+ theworld’s smallest buoyant406 MHz PLB. Suggestedretail is $325.
The ResQLink is some-thing boaters hope theyneverhave touse, but if theyget stranded or sink whileon the water, they’ll be gladthey have it. They merelypushabutton toactivate thePLB and the GPS coordi-nates of their location arerelayed to the appropriatesearch and rescue team. Aseparate homing signal andstrobe light guides rescuersto the boaters. Also new isthe ACR ARTEX SurvivorClub. Buy an ACR beaconand use it in an emergencyand you become a clubmember and also receive anew replacement beacon inexchange for the used one.

Thinking about buying anew boat or slipping intosomething pre-owned?
Then the Fort Lauder-dale International BoatShow may just have whatyou’re looking for. Onething’s certain: There willbe a lot ofmarine eye candyondisplay.
But before you get car-ried away with visions ofsailing off in your dreamboat, you should do somehomework before headingto the show.
While boat shows aregood for comparison shop-ping given the number ofboats and motors in oneplace, advance researchwill help simplify the buy-ing experience, boating in-
dustry specialists say.“Boat showprices can be
really good, especially witholder inventory,” said Caro-line Ajootian, assistant vicepresident, consumer affairsfor BoatUS, a national asso-ciation representing boatowners since1966.
The good news is that ifyou’re in the market for aboat, financing is available. Some lending specialistssay a 680 credit score orhigher is realistic toobtainaboat loan today.
“Money is readily avail-able if people qualify,” saidBob Allen, office managerat Trident Funding Corp. inFort Lauderdale. “Morelending programs are avail-able now than there everwere.”
Interest rates are alsodown a bit over last year,
“which is a good thing,” Al-len added.
This year, the hottest-selling boat category inSouth Florida is the openfisherman, with three orfour outboards, which isused for fishing and diving, said Scott Stamper, seniorvice president of Atlass In-surance Group in Fort Lau-derdale. “These boats arefast and fuel-efficient.”
Boat sales are rebound-
ing in the lagging economy, and that bodes well for themany boat sellers andmanufacturers exhibitingat the 53rd annual show.
For the12months endingin September, sales of newboats in South Florida rose5.5 percent to 3,854 unitscompared with 3,653 in theprior-year period, accord-ing to Info-Link Technolo-gies, aMiami-basedmarineindustry tracker.
Consider these tips:Do your research:
Check several dealer web-sites togetan ideaof the fairmarket value of the boats ofinterest. While show pricescan be attractive, it’s prob-ablyagood idea tobuy froma local dealer that provideswarranty service, boat in-dustry specialists say. It canbe costly to trailer a boatout-of-state for servicing.
Pre-qualify for loan:“The [boat] brokers like it.It means they’re seriousbuyers,” said Allen of Tri-dent, an exhibitor who al-readyhas several pre-quali-fied prospective buyerscoming to this year’s show.“More and more peoplewant it [pre-qualification]so they can get themoney ifthey find their dreamboat.”
Calculate full costs of
boat ownership: Otherthan the price tag, boatownership costs include in-surance,maintenance, stor-age or dockage fees andfuel. Hire a marine survey-or to evaluate the boat, es-pecially a pre-owned one,to determine if repairs arerequired.
Consider boat usage:Have a realistic view ofwhat you and your familywant to do with the boatand howmany times a yearit’s likely to be used to de-termine if it’s really the bestinvestment, Ajootian ad-vised. Renting a boat orjoining a boating club maybemore suitable options.
Know your boatingskills: Buy a boat thatmatches your skills level orbuy one that you can com-fortably and safely learn on.

The Wreck Bar: In our house, the myth aboutthe mermaids at the Wreck Bar may outlast thetrue identity of Santa Claus. Yes, kids, they are real.Located inside the hotel called the Sheraton FortLauderdale Beach, but still the Yankee Clipper inour hearts, the “MeduSirena Swim Show” (medu-sirena.com) continues to add even more kitschycharm to a watering hole already dripping in it.Shows are every Friday at 6:30 p.m. (1140 SeabreezeBlvd., Fort Lauderdale; SheratonFtLauderdale-Beach.com, 954-524-5551)
W Fort Lauderdale: Some of the most inter-esting things afloat during the weekend will befound at Wet, the slick poolside party platformthat the hotel calls a “high-energy sunbathingmecca.” On weekends DJs spin for a bikinied crowdbracketed by a peerless view of the Atlantic. Youcan catch underwater views of the action in thepool via the peek-a-boo staircase that rises fromthe Living Room, a party space with sofas thathave held the butts of not one Kardashian, butthree. And when the party turns to dinner, there’sSteak 954. They serve dry aged and AustralianTajima kobe beef, which you might order as part ofthe $100 Philly cheese steak. Most entrees fall wellunder that price. Be sure to leave room for dessertfrom Sarah Magoon, one of South Florida’s mosttalented pastry chefs, who pays homage to TV’s“Dexter” in one of her creations. (401 N. Fort Lau-derdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; WFortLau-derdaleHotel.com, 954-414-8200)
The Treasure Trove: Owner Jeff Rudd alwaysrefers it as the “Internationally World FamousTreasure Trove,” an ironic wink at the modest tav-ern’s salty humility. But when the windows areopen, letting a sunny breeze blow across the var-nished wood bar, it’s like you’re having a cold one ondeck somewhere. As always, boat show trafficrerouting around A1A will make the Trove harder toget to, but with a confidence borne of 18 years ofexperience, Rudd says: “People know how to findme.” Expect live music and food and drink specialseach day of the show, and nightly sing-alongs intothe wee hours. (2933 SE Fifth St., Fort Lauderdale;954-522-8385)
Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. This is where the35-location chain got its start 10 years ago. An-thony Bruno, who also owns Anthony’s Runway 84Restorante Italiano not far from here, wanted tobring a taste of his Brooklyn childhood to South
Florida. It starts with the 800-degree, coal-burningoven and ends with such signature pizzas as meat-balls and ricotta, roasted cauliflower and EggplantMarino — eggplant, tomato sauce, romano cheeseand basil — named after Miami Dolphin great DanMarino. (2203 S. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale;954-462-5555, AnthonysCoalFiredPizza.com)
Gran Forno Bakery: Open from 7 a.m. until 6p.m. Tuesday-Sunday, Gran Forno bakes some ofthe best bread in South Florida. Equally popular, however, are the grab-and-go panini sandwichesmade on the house-baked ciabatta — turkey andSwiss; chicken pesto and incredible vegetarianeggplant with mozzarella. There are just a fewspots to sit, but their sister restaurant Gran FornoPronto (704 E. Las Olas Blvd., 954- 533-6276, Gran-FornoPronto.com) offers more seating and an ex-panded menu including pizza and tapas. (1235 E.Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; 954-467-2244,GranForno.com)
Café Martorano: Steve Martorano startedwith sandwiches 20 years ago, and it has growninto one of the region’s best eateries. Part restau-rant/part nightclub, Martorano was spinning oldschool r&b and showing movies long before mostrestaurants. His Italian-American menu runs fromwhat Gourmet magazine called the world’s bestmeatball with salad and ricotta to Veal Sinatra, tenderloin of veal with lobster tails and mush-rooms in a marsala cream sauce. Come early if youdon’t like loud, but I don’t believe there’s anythingon the Martorano menu you won’t love. (343 EOakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-561-2554,CafeMartorano.com)
Grille 66 & Bar: Fort Lauderdale’s status asthe country’s largest yachting center is on fulldisplay through the wall of windows at this215-seat Intracoastal beauty. With all of its woodand glass, you could be sitting inside one of themegayachts for sale at the boat show. The Grille isa solid American restaurant that never disap-points. The menu starts with classics such asoysters Rockefeller and a chopped iceberg saladwith gorgonzola vinaigrette. Prime aged beef andinventive seafood and pasta are served by some ofthe best professionals in the business. From 5-7p.m. daily, well-poured cocktails are two-for-oneand the bar menu is half price. (Hyatt Regency PierSixty-Six, 2301 SE 17th St. Causeway, Fort Lau-derdale, 954-728-3500, Grille66andBar.com)
Your best betsto wine and dine
The weekenddevoted to the internationally influential Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is one of thebest for reminding ourselves where we live and why. We, the blasé natives, get tosee South Florida through the eyes of the out-of-town guest, be they from Bostonor Beijing, Perth or Perth Amboy. Nice place, they say. And we agree. Here are afew uniquely local stops near Fort Lauderdale beach that should resonate bothwith visitors and their re-evaluating hosts.
