BOARD NOTES• The pool is well on its way to reopening. The company that monitors the pool will get the pH

and chlorine levels to where they need to be. In the meantime, the contractor will get the city inspectors to approve our construction as per the engineer’s specifications. Also, we need confirmation that the health department’s rules for gallons per minute of flow are met per our contract with the contractor. Then the pool can be opened in accordance with Pinellas County and CDC regulations.

• Eleven buildings were painted in West Shore Village in the last two months, and we received a 10-year limited warranty on all buildings.

• At its May meeting the Board approved a quote for an audit of our finances by an accounting firm.

• The Board has established various committees to report to and work with the Board.• There has been discussion about the Rules & Regulations, but nothing has been finalized at this

time.• The Covid 19 virus has been very difficult for everyone and sometimes affected family members.

Hopefully we can all stay healthy and get back to normal.

FROM OUR CREWHi Everybody:What a couple of months we’ve had! The crew and I were classified essential and we have not missed a day.

One good thing to come out of all this is that we were able to do a lot of repairs to the pool deck, rec hall, and common areas.

It seems as though we are finally on the back side of this thing and can get back to some kind of normal.

On another note, hurricane season started June 1, so check your emergency equipment, plans, and food stores. The hurricane we went through a couple of years ago was nothing compared with what we could have had. The complex did not lose power but I did at home and it was miserable. So do not wait until the last minute to take it seriously and be prepared.

As usual, if you need to contact us, send a work order. Those of you using OneSource will find it very helpful.

Until next time,Joe & Staff

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTEditors Note: These two anecdotes were shared by Peter Taylor of Village 4 about a long-time resident who has since died.

Harold Taylor (no relation to me) was a WW2 bomber pilot. He was in his 90s when he told us these stories at one of our Monday morning poker games.

“We had the famous reporter Ernie Pyle accompany us on a bombing mission in the Pacific. We were all excited because we would be seen on the evening news back in the states. Pyle was filming through the open window when we encountered some turbulence and he dropped his camera overboard. So we never got on the nightly news.”

“I was sitting next to this guy at the Monday morning poker game and he was commenting about not playing as well as he used to. I kiddingly said, “Stop your crying Al. You sound like you’re 90 years old”. He then said to me “I’m 99”.

We celebrated Harold’s 100th birthday before he passed away.

Dylan Pepper, a resident of Village 6, and her fiancé Garrett Swanson got engaged May 2, 2020. Garrett kneeled with the ring at the Southern Star Stables in Pinellas Park because Dylan is crazy about horses. (courtesy photo)

The Tampa Bay Times published this article May 23, 2020 summarizing new developments in St. Pete’s Skyway Marina District By Waveney Ann Moore

SKYWAY MARINA DISTRICT UPDATES

ST. PETERSBURG — The five-story mural of a woman floating amid geometric sea tones catches the eye off the interstate. There’s hope it will become a landmark for the emerging Skyway Marina District, which turns 7 years old in October.

On nearby 34th Street S, three apartment projects are rising rapidly, with the promise of 849 new units. And while the coronavirus pandemic has not slowed construction, two of the project developers are monitoring its effect on the rental market.

“We think the apartment market will be back to where it was before COVID-19, barring anything hugely different,” said Jack Dougherty, former district president and owner of the $50 million, 245-unit Marina Walk apartment complex going up at 4601 34th St. S.

“Right now, a lot of people in the apartment market don’t want to take the risk of moving,” he said, adding he expects that to change as the economy improves and employees head back to work.

Phillips Development is building the Sur Club, a $75 million project that includes 296 apartments under construction and a completed storage facility that showcases the 55-foot high, 200-foot wide mural by Tampa Bay artist Matt Kress.

Don Phillips, managing director of Phillips Development, said the goal is to be finished around the beginning of 2021, allowing “enough room for the rental market to stabilize.”

Skyway Marina District stretches from 30th Avenue S to 54th Avenue S along 34th Street, and includes businesses west, such as Maximo Marina, which has benefited from a $25 million renovation. Residents in surrounding neighborhoods, including the waterfront communities of Maximo and Broadwater, have clamored for more sit-down restaurants, retail shops, offices and jobs.

SKYWAY MARINA DISTRICT UPDATES (continued)

The newest member of the district is Tiki Docks Skyway Bar & Grill. It will replace the Getaway restaurant at 3769 50th Ave. S., which closed last year. Tara Matheny, vice president of brand development for 23 Restaurant Services, which is behind the new restaurant, said the target is for an early July opening.

“We are absolutely ecstatic about coming into that community,” she said. “When we came across this location, it stood out for how strong the community around it is,” including the supporting energy of the marina and boating community.

An abandoned Kmart was demolished to make way for the third apartment project. The first building on the site is expected to be ready by the fourth quarter of this year, said Mark Ogier, principal of ContraVest of Altamonte Springs. The firm’s 308-unit luxury apartment complex — Addison Skyway Marina — is expected to be complete by this time next year.

Marina Walk’s eight-story apartment complex will include one- and two-bedroom units that face Boca Ciega Bay, with those on the third-floor and above offering water views. Dougherty, who owned the Flamingo Resort that was demolished last year to make way for the complex, expects his high-end apartments to attract married professionals between the ages of 30 and 60.

The project benefited from the coronavirus-related shut down of construction in South Florida, causing workers to move northward, he said.

“We originally had been concerned about the supply chain, concrete and steel,” Dougherty added. “At this point, things are going very well.”

Dougherty doesn’t think there will be too many apartments in the district.

”We don’t see it as an overwhelming number,” he said. “I look at it not as competition, but improving the demographic, bringing in a younger demographic, a ‘let’s go out and do things’ demographic.”

The Sur Club, announced in 2016, has just hit its stride. Besides apartments, the project will include two restaurants, a five-story parking garage and the storage facility. The mural on the facility is meant to be “a subliminal designator for the area,” Phillips said.

“We are working through a process to animate it through the evening, so that it will be dynamic,” Phillips said of the mural, which will be highlighted with 3-D projectors.

Kress, who lives on St. Pete Beach, has created murals throughout Tampa Bay, including Ybor City, Channelside and St. Petersburg. He noted that the storage facility, near the last exit to St. Pete Beach, was the perfect canvas for his vision. The woman portrayed on the mural captures the anticipation and joy of a day at the beach, he said.

The district also is getting workforce housing. Blue Sky Communities of Tampa will demolish an old motel at 3900 34th Street S for its SkyWay Loft Apartments. The 65-unit development will consist of two buildings at 3900 34th St. S and 3319 39th Ave. S.Nearby, the dilapidated Ponderosa restaurant at 3800 34th Street S has been demolished and the vacant property listed for $1.5 million, said real estate broker Kent Rodahaver, who recommended the demolition.“My reasoning is that a prime development site in the heart of the Skyway Marina District will be more appealing than a rundown and dated restaurant,” he said.

RESIDENT REVIEW

HUMOR ME

Very happy that our hair salons and nail shops are now open. We certainly needed those hair trims and pedicures! I had heard good reviews about a new salon, MERAKI NAILS, that opened in our neighborhood at the end of January but unfortunately had to shut down in March. They just reopened, so I decided to walk in and give them a try. I was amazed to see their stunning luxurious and immaculate salon. I was welcomed at the door by the owner, who made sure I had a mask, which I did. Before they started the manicure they rolled out their instruments on a towel and sanitized each one individually. The service was excellent. It’s clear to see how much care and investment the owner has made. I recommend giving them a try and welcoming them our area. MERAKI NAILS, professional nail care & beauty, is located at 4877 34th St. S., in the shopping center just down from Beef O’Brady’s. Editor’s Note: I’m kicking off our feature about personal encounters with wild animals with my story about a baby skunk. I’m sure our residents have had much more exciting experiences. Now that I’ve described my embarrassing mishap, no one should feel shy about sharing theirs. Email your story to [email protected].

The Skunk in my Window Well

The basement of my home in rural Vermont had deep window wells surrounded by shrubs. The wells were great for letting in light but were so deep that any unfortunate critters that fell in could never get out again.

I was doing laundry one day when I noticed a baby skunk frantically trying to jump out of one of the wells. A skunk family lived under a shed behind the house and one of the little ones had clearly disobeyed its parents. I went outside to investigate, but realized I couldn’t reach the skunk even lying on my stomach, so I went back in the house to get one of those long-handled grabbers for reaching high objects or picking up trash. While I was at it I stripped down to my underwear in case I got sprayed and tied a scarf around my face so I wouldn’t get skunk juice up my nose.

Back outside on my stomach, probably looking like a nutball naked bandit jabbing wildly at an unseen object in the well, I focused on getting a grip on the skunk’s feathery tail. But the feisty beast kept trying to spray me and its tail was so silky that each time I pinched it, it slipped from my mechanical grasp. Finally, I managed a tenuous hold and slowly lifted the upside-down skunk out of the hole. I flung it in the direction of the shed – only to have it slam into the bushes and boomerang right back into the pit.

Another 15 minutes passed before I got hold of the tail again. This time, I carefully tossed the skunk in the opposite direction and watched it race off like a bat out of hell. Sheepishly I stood up, brushed off and headed toward the back door. My hand was reaching for the handle when the little skunk rounded the corner of the house at a gallop, headed for the shed. I’m not sure which of us jumped higher – it or me – before we parted ways for the last time, the skunk diving into its burrow and me darting into the house.

VirtuClean 2 ~ Update On A CPAP Cleaner That’s Economical, Efficient and Easy to Use© 2020 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BOB SKIDMORECORRESPONDENT

In my April 2018 column, I featured the VirtuCLEAN 1 by VirtuOx, a CPAP cleaning system that cleans your CPAP device’s water tank, hose and associated mask, https://bit.ly/2WEs9RN. As with all products, there is always room for improvement. The VirtuCLEAN 2 is the latest model available.First, let’s talk about the need for cleaning your CPAP’s mask, hose and water tank. There are different theories on the frequency of such cleaning, so we’ll leave that subject up to you and your pulmonologist. Manual cleaning is one form of cleaning that’s recommended by most manufacturers of CPAP systems. Another cleaning method would be a CPAP cleaning device. The VirtuCLEAN 2 is one of many devices on the market for this purpose. Our body, both internally and externally, as well as our surroundings, can expose your device to various bacteria and germs that are passed into your lungs in the breathing process because they tend to cling on to the equipment. Perhaps the most common germs are E Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus and Candida Albicans, to name a few.Recently I’ve been testing the VirtuCLEAN 2, which has been available for a while. It comes with a large bag used as a cleaning chamber, with an attached filter requiring semi-annual replacement. It incorporates several innovations that include a digital screen that displays: Total Time Cleaned, Total Hours Used, Times Cleaned Last Week, Battery Charge Status, and a Countdown Timer during the use cycle. A “touch sensor icon” power switch is also part of the screen’s display. To shut the unit off, you can hold your finger on this icon for a few seconds. The VirtuCLEAN 2 takes 30 minutes of cleaning time to emit OZONE and an additional five minutes to dispense a clean airflow into the bag that holds your mask and when needed, your empty water tank. A short beep indicates the cleaning process is complete. Connecting the bag from the VirtuCLEAN 2 uses the same push-on connections used for normal operation.Charging via the supplied USB charger is typically required after every four uses and is also indicated by the digital status indicator displayed upon startup. Charging takes about two hours to complete. VirtuClean 2 is as much as 99.9% effective in killing germs and bacteria in many brands of sleep equipment and can be used at home or in a hospital setting to clean multiple masks. I’ve used both versions for several years and find them to be much easier and faster that the old baby-soap/hot water method. VirtuClean 2 comes with a replaceable, rechargeable lithium battery, a filter replaceable bi-annually, and an annually replaceable pouch. GADGETEER’s RATING: ★★★★★MSRP: $279 (Available retail and on line from various vendors.)For more information go to: https://bit.ly/3fX4SSC
