Jayagovind Harigopal Agarwal Agarsen College was established by Agarwal Relief and
Educational Trust consisting, the philanthropic Agarwal Community (Chennai) in the
academic year 2000-2001 at Madhavaram.
The main aim of this non-profit institution, is to offer value –based education at
Graduation, Post-Graduation and Research levels to various students living below the poverty
line and enable them to earn a decent living. The fee structure is also designed keeping this in
mind.
It is a modern campus with all the necessary infrastructure, well equiped UG & PG
computer labs, a large Auditorium and an excellent Canteen. The sprawling campus amidst a
calm atmosphere provides an apt ambience for teaching as well as learning activities.
With a growing strength of more than 1500 students and over 70 experienced faculty and
staff members, the College has made an enviable progress within a short span of 15 years.
Agarwal Community originated from Maharaja Agarsen, who was born at the end of
“Dwapara-yug”, 5123 years ago, about 85 years before “Kalyuga” or at about 3200
BC.
According to the tradition, there existed in the days of yore a flourishing janapada named
Agrey whose capital was known as Agrodaka. Maharaja Agarsen was a founder of Agreya.
Evidence relating to this state and its rule has come to light through literature, legends and
Archaeological finds such as coins. Maharaja Agarsen believed in equality of men and equal
opportunity to all. He developed a particular kind of socialistic society in the state in which
every newcomer or a person, who became insolvent due to any reason, was given a coin and
one brick by every inhabitant of Agreya Janapada. This enabled him to build his own house
and start some industry or trade.
This practice was based on the principle of mutual help and was the cause of all round
progress of Agreya. Because of huge animal sacrifice and slaughter in the Yagnams,
Maharaja Agarsen abandoned them and directed his people to adopt “ahimsa” and
converted them from “Kshatriya” to “Vaisya” Community.
To make reigning easy, he divided his state into 18 parts, each one representing by a
powerful and intelligent man called Ganapati and treated them like his son. Thus he placed a
foundation stone for a democratic rule. The people writing the following Gothras after their
name are all Agarwals. They are 18 in numbers: 1. Garg 2. Goyal 3. Goyan 4. Bansal 5.
Kansal, 6. Singhal, 7. Mangal, 8. Jindal, 9. Tingal, 10. Airan, 11. Dharan, 12. Madhukal, 13.
Bindal, 14. Mittal, 15. Tayal, 16. Bhandal, 17. Nagai, 18. Kuchhal.
Gupt or Gupta means most intelligent, deep thinker and always interested to know the
inner world of human life. They also belong to Agarwal Community having one of the above
Gotra. Today, the population of Agarwals in India is above four crore and most of them are in
industry, Trade and Commerce.
