The board recently passed a resolution to start the 2010 year with an upgrade to our scholarship program. As many of you know, NEDAASC has been committed to sponsoring 20 students at NEDUET who did not have sufficient funds to complete their education. Until now, we were unable to cover their full tuition costs. In 2010, we will be covering full tuition costs for 30 deserving students to help make their dream of earning an NEDUET education into a reality. It was further resolved that from 2011 onwards NEDAASC will provide full scholarships to 40 students. Two of our board members, Zaid Ahmad and Mansoor Khan took part in the 2009 scholarship and essay contest award ceremonies at NEDUET. They have detailed their visits in two articles in this issue of the newsletter. Many thanks to both of them for their time and dedication. Given the huge success of the 2009 essay contest, the board will continue to sponsor the essay contest for the 2010-year and hopefully every year thereon. Shariq Raza will Chair the 2010 essay contest efforts, the tentative topic for which is, “Transforming NEDUET into a world class Institution.” Stay tuned for essay contest details. I am hopeful that we will have a 2011 International Convention at NEDUET in Karachi, and look forward to working with the organizing committee. This convention will be particularly relevant, as we will have the opportunity to get a better view on how to best help our Alma Mater on the individual as well as collective basis with the faculty, staff and students of NEDUET. As I step down from the Presidency, I will remain on the board as an active and contributing member and look forward to the 2010 convention in Chicago, planned for July 31, 2010. I would like to congratulate Dr. Farhat Siddiqi, the incoming President. Farhat is a founding board member and currently serves as the Director of Publications. He was an integral component to our 2009 International Conference hosted by NEDAASC and I am confident that he will bring the same level of commitment and enthusiasm that he has had as a board member to the position of President. I wish all of you a very happy and prosperous 2010. -Ahmed Ali

  • Adding to the NED Nostalgia: Alumni Convention 2009 By Ali Hasan Cemendtaur

NEDAASC Board of Directors with Prof. Sahibzada Rafeeqi, Prof. Shamsul Haq, CG Syed Ibne Abbas and Ashraf Habibullah

Garden Grove, CA: Reunions are emotional occasions: they are about plunging in nostalgia, about cherishing a shared past, about looking at the faces of your old friends and wondering how fast time passes, and about a chance to prioritize your goals in life. NED Alumni Convention 2009, held in Southern California on July 18, provided opportunities for all of the above and made the daylong program a memorable event through Alamgir’s thrilling comeback performance. The convention comprised of a day session with emphasis on education and knowledge exchange, and an evening session of entertainment, fine food, and good company. The morning at the convention started with a breakfast and opportunities for social networking. The knowledge exchange part of the program began with a panel discussion on “Secrets of Success in Entrepreneurship” moderated by Dr. Farhat Siddiqi, one of the distinguished students of NED University’s late Vice Chancellor A.T. Khan. Dr. Siddiqui is the president and CEO of Geo-Environmental, Inc. Farhat Siddiqui said the NED alumni are good at anything they do. “If they would open a burger shop they would make the best burgers in town.” The discussants of the first panel included NEDians who started their businesses and excelled. Raghib Hussain, CTO of Cavium Networks, advised would-be entrepreneurs to start business “in the area of your core excellence.” He said that his alma mater gave him the attitude that “you can do it”, and he learned the importance of networking while studying at NED. Arif Zafar Mansuri, president of Pakistan Link and CEO of Metals and More, said that in any venture the secret of success is to pay attention to the seven C’s: Clarity, Competence, Constraints, Creativity, Concentration, Courage, and Continuity of action. He said there are always a few who are genius and are bound to succeed because of their gifted faculties, and then there are those are just plain lucky. But in comparison to these two smaller groups, most people have to work very hard to achieve whatever they want to achieve in life. Abul Islam, President and CEO of AI Engineers, said he started his business when he got bored with his erstwhile well-paying 8 am to 5 pm job. It took his firm eighteen months to get its first business — a period long enough for him to almost deplete his financial resources.

Naim Siddiqui, President and CEO of Crown Technical Systems, called himself an accidental entrepreneur. He advised the audience to “build a personal relationship with anybody you meet.” He said that in any business “there will always be setbacks. Be tenacious. Never give up. Eventually things will start to turn around.” Faheem Ahmed, CEO of Pakistan-based JCR-VIS, a credit-rating firm wished brain drain could be stopped and bright people could be brought back to Pakistan. Ahmed said rating credit worthiness of businesses in Pakistan is a dangerous job, because many of those companies are owned by powerful politicians and people of influence. The next discussion, focusing on “Transportation, A prerequisite for Economic Prosperity and Social Bonding” benefited from the expertise of Syed Shariq Reza, Mujib Ahmed, Shirjeel Muhammad, and Sohaib Siddiqui, and was steered by Shahnawaz Ahmed. Mujib Ahmed made a detailed presentation on Pakistan’s transportation network and left the people with the question: Why a Karachi to Quetta highway cannot be as modern as a US highway? Syed Shariq Raza’s presentation was on the history, funding, features, and economic benefits of the US interstate highway system. This correspondent was unfortunate to miss the latter part of that colloquium. In fact, he missed the other two post-lunch discussions and the morning keynote speech that was to be given by Dr. Jami Shah of Arizona State University, as well. One panel discussion this scribe totally missed was on “How Alumni can Enhance Quality of Education?” According to the program brochure that session was to be moderated by Moqueem Ansari and the panelists included NED University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shamsul Haque; Dean of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Professor Dr. Sahibzada Farooq Ahmad Rafeeqi; Dr. Arshad Mahmood; Mansoor Khan; and Zaid Ahmed. The other missed opportunity was to benefit from the expertise of Iqbal Molvi, Irfan Ahmed, Mazher Zaidi, Asif Ansari, Humayun Rashid, and Mazhar Zubairi speaking on “Pakistan and Technology”, a discussion that was to be lead by Nadeem Moghal. By the time this correspondent came back to the convention a very animated speech of the evening keynote speaker Ashraf Habibullah was coming to its end. The speech was followed by dinner. The post-dinner entertainment program featured Saima Khan and Ryan Khan, two artists from Canada, who excelled in the art of gaining audience participation; Sakhi Kamal, an acclaimed comedian who originally performed in PTV’s show ‘Fifty, Fifty’; and of course, Alamgir. After losing the functionality of his kidneys, and apparently in a long line for kidney transplant, Alamgir is alive on blood-cleaning machines. He told the audience he goes for dialysis three times a week and that he was fortunate to live in this age when people with failed kidneys could still survive. The organizers of the NED Alumni Convention 2009 had originally planned to get Mohammad Ali Shehki, an NED alumnus, as the main performing artist of the evening, but when bureaucratic hurdles in flying Shehki from Pakistan to the US proved insurmountable, the organizers made arrangements with Alamgir. Apparently being cognizant of this history, and in the way of sharing insights into a bygone era’s entertainment business, Alamgir told the audience he and Shehki had always remained rivals, and that while performing at the Sindh Medical College or Dow Medical College (both in Karachi) Alamgir felt he was on neutral grounds, singing at the NED University he could feel he was trespassing on Shehki’s territory. Alamgir said he and Shehki never sang each other’s songs, but he would make a departure from the past by starting his performance of the night with one of Shehki’s famous number. And that is how Alamgir’s act started and it got more electric when Alamgir decided to make the session his tribute to prominent Pakistani singers: besides singing his own songs, Alamgir sang Ahmed Rushdi, Mehdi Hassan, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He sang and he danced, and he performed as if he were a 20-year-old, filled with energy, as if failed kidneys are not worth paying any attention to. Alamgir’s spectacular performance at the NED Alumni Convention 2009 ended a bit after one in the morning.

Garden Grove, CA: The 5th annual international convention of NED Alumni organized by NED Alumni Association of Southern California (NEDAASC) was held at the Embassy Suites on Saturday, July 18th. The day sessions were attended by nearly 200 people. The evening banquet with dinner and entertainment was well received by a sold out crowd of 500 people.

NEDians, their friends, and families came from far places throughout the country, Pakistan and the rest of the world. Dr. Rafeeqi, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NEDUET, and Dr. Shamsul Haq, pro Vice-Chancellor of NEDUET, travelled from Karachi to attend the convention. The conference attendees were greatly pleased with the entire event. They returned with life-lasting memories of a great convention. The ambiance of the evening program truly enthralled the entire audience. The convention consisted of two sessions including a day program of technical discussions and an evening program complete with dinner and entertainment. The author of this article had the honor of serving as the host for the day program. Mr. Arif Mansuri was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening program. Mr. Ahmed Ali, President of NEDAASC, started both sessions by welcoming the guests and briefly describing the activities of NEDAASC and the achievements made in the short span of time that the organization has been in existence. The first technical discussion of the day was entitled “Secrets of Success in Entrepreneurship.” It was moderated by the author of this article. The panelists presented their views, vision, and the hurdles they faced in pursuit of success. Mr. Raghib Hussain, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Cavium Networks, described his journey from Pakistan to Silicon Valley. He worked briefly for Cisco and other companies until eventually starting Cavium Networks with his friends, where he currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer. Mr. Arif Mansuri told his story of starting out as an engineer after graduating from NED, but later succeeding in the diversified fields of manufacturing and journalism. Mr. Shahnawaz Ahmed moderated the second session of the day that was titled “Transportation: A Prerequisite for Economic Prosperity and Social Bonding.” One of the panelists, Mr. Mujib Ahmad, showed an interesting slide presentation about the different aspects of the transportation system in Pakistan. The third session of the day entitled “How Alumni can Enhance Quality of Education” was moderated by Mr. Moqueem Ansari. The panelists presented their views regarding the improvement of the education system at NEDUET. Mr. Zaid Ahmed, a panelist, described the scholarship program undertaken by NEDAASC to help the current NEDUET students. The last technical discussion of the day, “Pakistan and Technology”, was moderated by Mr. Nadeem Mughal. The final session consisted of brainstorming ways to improve technology in Pakistan. All technical sessions were productive exchanges of knowledge between the panel and the audience. The day’s keynote speaker, Dr. Jami J. Shah, presented his views about the need to improve the current education system at NEDUET and ways to turn those changes into a reality. The evening was packed with an entertaining and informative program. With the excellent main course, the audience was ready for the keynote speech and entertainment. The keynote was delivered by none other than Mr. Ashraf Habibullah, the CEO and founder of Computers and Structures, Inc. Mr. Habibullah gave a few lessons to the audience about structural engineering and then took the crowd on a stroll through memory lane of the old NED Engineering College. Ashraf’s speech accentuated the evening as he received a standing ovation. Saima Khan, Ryan Khan and Sakhi Kamal entertained the audience with beautiful music and humor. The audience was on their feet dancing along with Saima Khan and Ryan Khan. Then came the legend everybody was waiting for, Alamgir. He delighted the audience with a rendition of his everlasting popular songs. The King of Pop, who has been in the hearts of the music fans for the last four decades, sang with passion. And a moment came when emotions started to overflow. The audience stood up to give Alamgir a standing ovation. Alamgir responded with even more emotion, choked voice and teary eyes. Since everything eventually comes to an end no matter how good, so did the evening of fun and entertainment at nearly 1 AM. The convention of 2009 attendees will cherish its memories for the rest of their lives!

By: Ahmed Ali Ladies and Gentleman, Assalam-O-Alaikum, It is my distinct pleasure and privilege to welcome all of you to the 2009 NED Alumni International Convention. We have attendees from all over the United States, Canada and Pakistan. We are honored to have with us several distinguished guests. We have: The Consul General of Pakistan Syed Ibne Abbas and Sadaf Abbas, The Pro Vice Chancellor of NED University Shamsul

Haq and Mrs. Haq, The Dean of the Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NED University, Professor Sahibzada Rafeeqi, The Sheriff of Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, along with his wife, and the Sheriff of Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchins. This is the first time that a gathering of NED Alumni, their family and friends has taken place in Southern California. The NED Alumni Association of Southern California, better known as NEDAASC, is your host for today's event. As the founding president of NEDAASC, it has been a unique experience to work with a Board of Directors who are all engineers from Karachi. Engineers tend to analyze, question, work within a budget, and create a final product that stands on its own merits. This Convention is the hard work of what this board is capable of. These amazing individuals, with full-time careers, love Pakistan and simply want to give back to their alma mater and support the profession of Engineering in Pakistan. This is a get-things-done organization. In the short time that we have been around, we have accomplished a few things: One of the focal points of our organization is the NED student scholarship program. This past year, we provided 20 scholarships to deserving NED students. We intend to increase that number each year by 10 for the next 2 years to reach 40-awarded scholarships in 2011. If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, please feel free to complete the form on your tables and hand it over to one of our board members or volunteers. Another initiative undertaken was to organize and conduct education seminars at the NED Campus in Karachi and help in the dissemination of current engineering practices. Our first seminar this year was on February 13 entitled an “Introduction to Electronic Packaging and Interconnections” in collaboration with Mr. Ahmer Syed, a mechanical engineer. This first seminar had well over 100 students and faculty attending. Since then, we have held two more seminars by Mohammad Bilal Siddiqui on June 27 and 29 on “IT Today” and another on “Today’s Economy and E-commerce” coordinated with Syed Anis-ul Qadr, the Director of the Continuing Engineering Education Centre Academy at NED. Our members are planning more seminars for 2009. The topics currently under consideration are air pollution quality and control, and water purification/supply. On a humanitarian note, we were able to help one of our emeritus professors of the University, who is currently in need due to health problems. We wish him a speedy recovery and our prayers are with him and his family. NEDAASC is also in the process of evaluating a financial support package for NED students and faculty to present technical papers at established international forums. It is our hope to raise funds to give the financial support necessary to allow the faculty and students to share their expertise and knowledge with the rest of the world. We believe that this will greatly benefit Pakistan and give greater exposure to the research being done at NED. Now we come to the highlight of this Convention: The essay competition for current NED students sponsored by NEDAASC. The topic “BRIDGING THE GAP IN ENGINEERING ADVANCEMENT AT NED” was promoted in conjunction with the controller of student affairs Mr. Sohail Fazil Usmani at NEDUET and our website. We received a tremendous response from the students.

A select group of five distinguished impartial judges, who are Jami J. Shah, Syed Qaisar Madad, Riaz Haq, Pervez Lodhie, and Nadeem Moghul, then evaluated the short listed essays. Our first place winner was Muhammad Turab Mehdi who was awarded Rs. 35,000. The second place winner was Abdur Rafey Zafar and he was awarded Rs. 25,000. The third place winner, Sanna Iqbal Piran, was awarded Rs. 15,000. I invite you to visit our website www.nedaasc.org to read the winning essays in their entirety. NEDAASC board member Zaid Ahmed will present the certificates of achievement and prize money to the students later this month at the campus in Karachi. This competition would not have been a success without the hard work of the judges and the chairperson of the competition, Mr. Mujeeb Ahmed. Please give a big round of applause for our judges, winners, competition participants and our essay coordinator, Mr. Mujeeb Ahmed. I would like to take the opportunity to introduce our board of directors. Please stand as your name is called and hold your applause until I complete the list. Shariq Raza, Mansoor Khan, Moqueem Ansari, Mujeeb Ahmed, Farhat Siddiqi, Zaid Ahmed, Arif Mansuri, Altaf Godil, Naim Siddiqi, and Nadeem Moghul. Please give them a big hand. All of them have done a wonderful job and without their hard work and input, NEDAASC would not have been able to accomplish what it has. Also, please give a hand to our volunteers who will be helping during the day to make sure everything goes well. I would like to thank our many supporters and recognize our Platinum sponsors for today’s convention, Qaisar Madad and Meher Tabatabai, who both believe in opening doors of opportunity to those who need it. Qaisar was also a judge for the essay contest. Thank you Qaisar and Meher. Our other platinum sponsor is Mr. Ashraf Habibullah of Computer & Structures from the NED Class of 69, who is also tonight’s keynote speaker. I would also like to acknowledge attorneys Ms. Alia and Mr. Shahzad Qadri for their continued professional help. They have been instrumental in helping us earn 501c3 status as a nonprofit organization. The process is ongoing and I am confident that we will be granted nonprofit status very soon. Many thanks to Altaf Godil for our website. Altaf and his crew have done a wonderful job. A very special thanks to Arif Mansuri and his staff here in LA and in Karachi for their help in preparing and running the ads in his newspaper, the Pakistan Link. I would also like to thank other media outlets who have helped cover today’s event. They are: Mr. Zafar Abbas of the Urdu Times, Mr. Naushad Sarwar of the Pakistan Times, and Mr. Waqar Khan of Safeer-e-Pakistan besides all area news outlets covering this conference. I would also like to thank our editor, Dr. Farhat Siddiqi. We continue to receive great feedback about our newsletters, especially the “Memory Lane” pieces. I would like to encourage our readers to continue to contribute to our magazine by writing columns and submitting photos for everyone to reminisce. We have in our company Mr. Nooruddin Ahmed, NED graduate, and Mr. Faheem Ahmed who came from Karachi to join us for this convention. I would like to recognize our senior most NED alum, Mr. Syed Arshad Ali, a graduate of 1951; we at NEDAASC welcome you, sir. Many thanks to our moderators and the panelists in our day session. And a special thanks to Dr. Jami Shah for his great luncheon keynote speech. I hope you enjoy the rest of the evening and thank you again for coming. The 2010 NED Alumni International Convention will be in Chicago. We look forward to seeing you again next year. Thank you.

  • Scholarship Award Ceremony at NEDUET By Mansoor Khan A simple but impressive scholarship awards ceremony was held on June 29, 2009 in the Senate Hall of Vice Chancellor Directorate, NED University of Engineering & Technology. This scholarship was sponsored by NED Alumni Association of Southern California (NEDAASC). As a representative of NEDAASC it was a great pleasure for me to participate in this very special ceremony celebrating the achievements of the students receiving scholarship awards. It was a fantastic show of support for these young people and a wonderful demonstration of the

close ties between NEDAASC and NED University. Vice Chancellor Mr. Abul Kalam, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Shamsul Haque, Dean of Civil Engineering & Architecture Dr. Sahibzada Farooq Ahmed Rafeeqi, Controller Student Affairs Mr. Suhail Usmani, Director Industrial Liaison Mr. Shahrukh, NEDAASC Board Member Mansoor Khan and scholarship recipients attended the ceremony.

  • I will take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation to Controller Student Affairs Mr. Suhail Usmani for organizing the ceremony at a short notice. I am grateful for the warm welcome accorded to me by the management of NED University. NEDAASC scholarship for NED University students was initiated in 2008 and has been providing help to numerous students. This is a significant achievement considering that without the help some could have discontinued their education or found it very difficult to concentrate on their studies. The NEDAASC scholarship program helps make engineering education attainable. Upon graduation, we hope alumni scholars will help sustain Alumni scholarships tradition of philanthropy and academic excellence. The Board of Directors of NEDAASC selected and awarded 10 scholarships of Rs. 10,000 each in 2008 to the first year students of NED University. In 2009, 19 scholarships were given to first year and second year students. Next year we are committed to offer 30 scholarships. Onwards after 2010 NEDAASC will be offering forty scholarships every year. The funds for scholarships are generated through donations by NEDAASC Board of Directors, general members and sponsors. Generous donors continue to provide crucial support, while committed volunteers dedicate their time to review applications. The scholarship program is now in its second year supporting and encouraging students to maintain their integrity and use their determination to succeed in engineering. NED Alumni Association of Southern California (NEDAASC) is a registered non-profit organization that endeavors to help students based on Need-cum-Merit basis gain engineering education at undergraduate level.
