A year of preparation for our World Congress

Streamlining and reorganization in our offices, SIGNIS members move on full steam. We are again taken aback by the culmination of still another year of work, as we keep making steady progress, now in the final stretch towards our 2017 World Congress.

Both our General Secretariat and SIGNIS Services Rome have been undergoing processes of internal reorganization, in order to make better use of the available resources and to offer a wider variety of better services to our members. The results of this effort are already apparent in the new design of our website and the new products and services offered by our Rome office. On the other hand, the year has not been without administrative apprehensions in both venues, but they have been or are being dealt with quite successfully.

April brought very sad news, with the passing away of a man who was for many years the soul of the Association, Robert Molhant, a true giant of Catholic communications. A special award is to be instituted, honouring his memory.

SIGNIS Services Rome celebrated in February 65 years of unwavering support to missionary work, especially in Africa. The anniversary was highlighted in a very well received special presentation of the SSR in the Vatican, coinciding with a visit of the Executive Committee. During their stay in Rome, the executive members also held cordial and productive meetings with the prefects of the Secretariat for Communications of the Holy See and the recently created Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.

The SIGNIS Board of Directors met in June at the designated Congress venue, Laval University in Québec City, Canada. They could ascertain the excellent conditions of the facilities, and important decisions were made regarding the programme of the event.

Highlights of the past year

65 years of SSR serving the Church in the Global South

In November, SIGNIS Services Rome (SSR) looked back at 65 years of serving the Church in the world, especially in Africa and Asia with a celebration at its offices in Palazzo San Calisto in Rome.

SSR can trace its origins in Rome back to 1951 when, responding to the request of the Holy See, the Missionary Service was established by the International Catholic Organization for Cinema (OCIC). After the formation of SIGNIS, it became SIGNIS Services Rome (SSR). In the last 15 years SSR has been increasingly important in helping to bridge the technological gap in the field of communication for Catholic communities living in the “global south”.

SIGNIS honours pioneer communicators

On October 7th, SIGNIS recognized Sr María Fidelis Tibaldo, FSP (Argentina), Fr Attilio Hartmann SJ (Brazil) and the communicator Elson Faxina (Brazil) as Honorary Members of the world association. The tribute was paid to them at the 5th COMLAC Congress in Paraguay to recognize their efforts in uniting the Catholic communications organizations (UNDA, OCIC and UCIP) in Latin America into one continental association.

Robert Molhant, 1940-2016

This year also marked the sad passing of Robert Molhant, who died unexpectedly on April 12th at his home in Brussels. He was first Secretary General of SIGNIS (2002-2005) and Secretary General of OCIC, the International Catholic Organization for Cinema, (1979-2002). For nearly 40 years, he was a creative pioneer in the world of Catholic communications. On his retirement from SIGNIS he took on the Presidency of CREC International, the communications and media training institute formed by Pierre Babin in Lyon in 1971.

Encouraging and celebrating storytellers

SIGNIS aims to help raise professional standards in media production and to promote creative storytelling that inspires hope and contributes to a culture of peace. One way to do this is to award quality media productions.

Promoting values in cinema and TV

Over the year more than 100 SIGNIS jurors from more than 40 countries participated in 39 international film and TV festivals in Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. SIGNIS itself gave 20 prizes, 17 were awarded ecumenically and two were awarded by interreligious juries. A full list of international SIGNIS and Ecumenical prizes are on the website and in the annual list published at the end of the year.

Regional and national media awards

Throughout the year SIGNIS promoted quality media at regional and national levels.

The SIGNIS member in Australia and the Australian Catholic Film Office named Last Cab to Darwin as their Australian Film of the Year 2015 and La Loi du marché (The Measure of a Man) won the SIGNIS Europe Prize for Best European Film 2015.

SIGNIS Japan, in May, presented the Japan Catholic award to a Naomi Kawase film, An (Sweet Bean). It also issued a 20 page brochure Japan Catholic Film Awards: 40 years of history to commemorate this occasion.

In North America in St Louis, Missouri, in June, the Catholic Academy of Communication Professionals celebrated the 51st annual Gabriel Awards. Launched in 1965, they award TV and radio programmes that entertain and enrich “with a true vision of humanity and a true vision of life.” Later, in November, Communications et Société in Québec, awarded the film Tuktuq by Robin Aubert its annual Robert-Claude Bérubé Prize.

The prestigious 39th SIGNIS Salutation Film and Teledrama awards in Sri Lanka were also held in November honouring professionals across the media industry.

Connecting media professionals

In 2016 SIGNIS continued to enable media professionals to network and meet to collaborate and share experiences.

World Congress

The SIGNIS Board, meeting in Québec City, Canada, June 6-10, began to plan the next SIGNIS World Congress, to be held at Laval University in Québec City, June 19-22, 2017. This congress will be followed by the annual Catholic Media Conference (CMC) and there will be one joint day. The theme ,which has also been adopted by the CMC, is “Promoting Stories of Hope.”

TV Seminar in Taiwan

From September 9th–12th, SIGNIS held its annual global meeting for TV professionals. This year, the vibrant city of Taipei, Taiwan was chosen to welcome the group. About forty professionals from 12 countries and four continents met to discuss and exchange on the theme “Imaging the Church in our productions”. Present was also Dr. Nataša Govekar, director of the Pastoral and Theology department of the Vatican Secretariat for Communications.

Coming together nationally and regionally

As ever, meetings in different continents enabled members to share concerns and experiences.

For the first time in the history of the SIGNIS member in Myanmar, at least 40 delegates of SIGNIS Asia from 13 countries gathered together in Yangon, from August 21st to 27th to deliberate on their mission and explore the possibilities of achieving sustainability. Delegates committed themselves, following the call of Pope Francis, to build environmentally friendly self-sustaining, integrated community media projects.

Earlier in February, at the Pastoral Institute, Mangalore, the SIGNIS India National Assembly 2016 brought together 100 participants from across the sub-continent to discuss the theme “Media and Family Values”.

The fifth Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Communication (COMLAC,V) was held from 6th to 9th October in Asuncion, Paraguay, with the theme “Communication, citizenship, democracy and solidarity for a full life.” This continental meeting of Catholic communicators was organized by the Association of Catholic Communicators of Paraguay (ACCP), the Paraguay SIGNIS member, and the Latin American and Caribbean Catholic Communication Association (SIGNIS ALC).

The Congress explored a wide variety of topics. There were workshops on media education for a democratic culture, presentation of online publications, print media and the development of audiovisual production.Participants also reflected on modern communications from the perspective of a Church committed to the dignity of the person and the need for social change.

Barbados hosted the 9th assembly of SIGNIS Caribbean on September 6th – 7th. The delegates from eleven countries focused on developing a strategic communications pastoral plan for the region.

Promoting radio

SIGNIS recognizes the continuing importance of radio, especially in poorer regions of the world, and belongs to AMARC, World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (www.amarc.org).

The ongoing relevance of radio was shown in November, when SIGNIS Brazil was a major contributor to the multimedia documentary, Mariana, a year later, which told the stories of those whose lives had been impacted by the collapse of a dam in 2015. With the support of the network of Catholic radio stations, newspapers, Catholic TV, internet and social media the project brought together radio reporting, a TV documentary and print and web journalism. The documentary featured in 230 radio broadcasts, 11 newspapers and 8 TV channels as well as on the web and social media.

In August, SIGNIS Asia organized a 5-day Community Radio Workshop at the Wisma Studio Audio Visual Puskat, Sinduharjo, Yogyakarta in Indonesia. The programme was coordinated by Ms Bernadeta Widiandayani, Chair of the SIGNIS Radio Desk. Twenty participants from 10 Asian countries studied economic sustainability and how to adapt radio to a digital environment.

In June a wide range of radio programmes from Canada and the US were honoured in the Gabriel Awards.

SIGNIS embraces journalism and the press

During 2016 SIGNIS highlighted the achievements of Catholic journalism and the press and encouraged networking.

In January the 20th Journées François de Sales organized by the French Federation of Catholic Media (FMC) took place in Annecy, France. More than 250 journalists and communicators met for two days to reflect on and discuss the relationship between religion and cultural identity.

The annual Catholic Media Conference brings together hundreds of Catholic journalists from across North America. This year, in St Louis in June, the Chair of the Journalism Desk, Pierre Murray and Vice-Chair, Tony Spence participated as did SIGNIS President, Gustavo Andújar and Vice-Presidents, Frank Frost and Lawrence John Sinniah as well as Acting Secretary General, Ricardo Yañez.

Migration and social fear was discussed at a joint seminar between the European Union Commission and Catholic and other Churches in Brussels in October. Jim McDonnell, Journalism Desk Secretary, spoke about social media and the responsibility of journalists and media educators.

Encouraging young talent

Forming future storytellers and creative media professionals is important to SIGNIS as highlighted this year in the creation of the Communications Laboratory (Comm Lab). Also important is publically recognizing and encouraging new talents through awards.

Comm Lab: Youth for a Culture of Peace

In October, 12 young journalists and communicators from Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia and Nigeria, gathered at the Don Bosco Youth Educational Services (DBYES) at Karen, Nairobi, Kenya where they underwent a 10-day training from Oct. 17th to 28th on peace building through the use of media. They extended their knowledge of Church social teaching and communication skills with the aim of creating awareness for the need for peace and justice in their communities and the world at large.

The workshop was organized by SIGNIS in partnership with Bosco Eastern Africa Multimedia Services (BEAMS), and facilitated by Fr. Sebastian Koladiyil SDB; Larry Rich, Eugine Wirba and SIGNIS CommLab Ambassador for Africa Lawrence Mberi.

Film awards for young people

2016 was the 11th anniversary of the SIGNIS East Africa Talent Award at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). It grants 1,000 USD to help upcoming talented film producers from East African countries. Clementine Dusabejambo (Rwanda) won this year’s award for A Place for Myself, a story about the struggle of a mother against the stigmatisation of her child who has albinism.

SIGNIS has been involved in the PLURAL + (http://pluralplus.unaoc.org) festival for six years. Young film, TV and video makers from around the world make short online videos on migration, diversity and social inclusion. This year SIGNIS awarded North to South, by Coniah Pougam Mouiche (Ghana) which looked at migration within a country, a reality sometimes forgotten by media and governments.

Communications

SIGNIS communicates through a variety of channels. These include its long-established quarterly trilingual (English, French and Spanish) magazine, SIGNIS Media. It is available both in print and downloadable PDF format.

SIGNIS on social media and the web 

In the past year the website, www.signis.net, in English, French and Spanish, attracted more than 269,968 visits.

Visits to social media sites: Facebook (SIGNIS World Catholic Association for Communication and SIGNIS Desks) and YouTube (signisworld) continued to increase. In December, we reached the 1,700 likes milestone on the main Facebook page and near to 1,000 followers in Twitter.

Some 26 issues of the electronic newsletter (SIGNIS Webnews) were sent out (in English, French and Spanish), to 12,000 individuals each time, while the TV Desk distributed four issues of its TV Newsletter in three languages to over 500 contacts.

Practical communications

SIGNIS Services Rome

SSR promotes the latest user-friendly technologies for radio, television, video, cinema, journalism and internet, especially in Africa. It is now offering consulting and project management for Catholic media enterprises in Africa: helping them write and submit projects to funding agencies.

In 2016 SSR has celebrated the 65th anniversary of its office in Rome and focused on promoting access to the new services launched in 2015: Cinema in a box (Kit for cinema projections and debates), Music in a box (digital music and audio recording studio, SIGNIS Easy web (creation of web sites online), and the New VSAT connections system. The year was enriched by the positive results, in terms of obtaining funds, of some major communication projects followed by the new SSR’s Department of project writing. Media training across the world

At the end of September, a media workshop was organized by SIGNIS member CREC international in Port Moresby for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. The workshop was led by Fr Fabrizio Colombo, director of SIGNIS Services Rome) and among other topics focused on social media.

Evaluating and recommending media projects

SIGNIS is not a funding agency and does not fund projects. As a service to the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), SIGNIS evaluates and recommends media-related pastoral projects from Africa, Asia, the Pacific. Project funds are disbursed directly by the PMS. Evaluations are carried out by selected SIGNIS local committees and compiled at the Brussels Secretariat. In 2016, a total of 289 projects were evaluated by SIGNIS (see infographics on page 12).

Dialogue, advocacy and collaboration

During 2016 SIGNIS continued working closely with Vatican Radio, the new Vatican Secretariat for Communications and the Vatican Film Library. The Catholic Media Council (CAMECO - www.cameco.org), is a long-standing important partner, and SIGNIS continued to be represented on its Board.

Ecumenical and interreligious dialogue

At international film festivals SIGNIS collaborates with the international interchurch organisation for film, INTERFILM (www.gep.de/interfilm) in 17 Ecumenical juries, including Berlin and Cannes. It also has contacts with film festivals on faith such as Insight, Religion Today and the Week of Spiritual Cinema in Barcelona.

SIGNIS also participates in interreligious juries. This year, for the first time, an interreligious jury was present at the DOK Leipzig festival. Its award went to Cahier Africain, by Heidi Specogna (Germany/Switzerland) which covers the conflicts between different religious and ethnic groups in the Central African Republic.

At the Iranian Fajr Film Festival, in Tehran, the interfaith Jury gave its award this year to Zemnaco by Mehdi Gorbanpour, (Iran). Commendations were also given to Love marriage in Kabul by Amin Palangi (Australia/Afghanistan) and the short-film Hasti by Kamal Parnak, (Iran, 9 min.).

The prize, and 5,000 Swiss francs, awarded by the Interreligious Jury at the documentary film festival in Nyon in April went to the film Liberation, The User’s Guide , directed by Alexander Kuznetsov (France/Russia).

In Barcelona, in November, the SIGNIS Cinema Desk organized with  the Catalan Government and the Blanquerna Observatory on Media Religion and Culture the first International meeting of  interreligious and spiritual film festivals. It was also the first world meeting of directors of international festivals for religious and spiritual films. Participants came from Mexico, Argentina, Egypt, UK, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Belgium, representatives from festivals in Iran and Israel were not able to attend. It was a meeting between festivals dedicated to promoting a culture of peace, understanding and dialogue between peoples, of all faiths and none.

Advocacy and inter-organizational dialogue

Since 2010, with the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), SIGNIS has given an annual Human Rights Award to a documentary film. Censored Voices, directed by Mor Loushy (Israel) received the 2015 Award. It is a feature-length documentary that highlights an unknown side of the history of the Six-Day War in 1967.

SIGNIS also has consultative status at UNESCO and belongs to the International Council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication, IFTC/CITC (www.cict-unesco.org).

SIGNIS is part of the GPPAC, the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, (www.gppac.net) and has good links with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (www.unaoc.org).

SIGNIS representative Joseph Bamat who succeeded   Daniel Van Espen as the new UNESCO representative for SIGNIS attended the UNESCO International Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Paris in December 2016. This Conference gathered more than 120 non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO and about 340 participants. The theme was “The Challenge of the Digital Revolution”.

This year’s Conference provided an opportunity to examine collective NGO action carried out in 2015 and 2016, and adopted the main lines of collective cooperation for 2017-2018. Moreover, participants elected a new Chairperson for the Conference, as well as a new NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee.

Une année de préparation du Congrès Mondial

Rationalisation et réorganisation au sein de nos bureaux, les membres de SIGNIS travaillent à plein régime. Une fois de plus, nous sommes surpris par l’arrivée de la fin d’une nouvelle année de travail, alors que nous arrivons dans les derniers moments avant notre congrès mondial. Le secrétariat de Bruxelles et les bureaux de SIGNIS à Rome connaissent un processus de réorganisation interne, afin d’utiliser au mieux les ressources disponibles et d’offrir une plus large variété de services à nos membres. Les résultats de ces efforts sont déjà visibles, notamment dans le nouveau design de notre site internet et les nouveaux produits et services proposés par nos bureaux de Rome. D’un autre côté, cette année a connu son lot de craintes administratives, mais elles sont désormais toutes gérées avec succès.

Avril fut un mois particulièrement triste, avec la nouvelle du décès d’un homme qui fut, durant de nombreuses années, l’âme de l’association : Robert Molhant, un vrai géant de la communication catholique. Un prix spécial en son honneur va être instauré.

Les Services de SIGNIS à Rome ont célébré le 65ème anniversaire de leur soutien indéfectible au travail missionnaire, particulièrement en Afrique. L’anniversaire a été célébré lors d’une très belle présentation de SSR au Vatican, coïncidant avec une visite du comité exécutif. Lors de leur séjour à Rome, les membres de l’exécutif ont également rencontré les préfets du secrétariat pour la communication du Saint-Siège et du dicastère pour les laïcs, la famille et la vie.

Les membres du conseil d’administration se sont réunis en juin à l’université Laval, à Québec au Canada, lieu du prochain congrès. Ils ont pu constater les excellentes conditions des lieux, et des décisions importantes quant au programme de l’évènement ont été prises.

Les faits marquants de cette année65 ans du SSR au service de l’Eglise dans le Sud

En novembre, SIGNIS Services Rome (SSR), est revenu sur ses 65 ans au service de l’Eglise dans le monde, particulièrement en Afrique et en Asie, lors d’une cérémonie dans ses bureaux au Palazzo San Calisto à Rome.

SSR trouve ses origines à Rome, en 1951, lorsque, répondant à une demande du Saint-Siège, le Service Missionnaire est créé par l’OCIC, l’Organisation Catholique Internationale du Cinéma. Après la création de SIGNIS, il fut renommé SSR, Services de SIGNIS à Rome. Ces 15 dernières années, SSR a pris de plus en plus d’importance pour aider à couvrir le fossé technologique dans le domaine de la communication pour les communautés catholiques vivant dans les pays du Sud.

SIGNIS honore les communicateurs pionniers

Le 7 octobre, SIGNIS a marqué sa reconnaissance à la sœur María Fidelis Tibaldo, FSP (Argentine), au père Attilio Hartmann, SJ (Brésil) et au communicateur Elson Faxina (Brésil) en leur accordant le titre de membres honoraires de l’association. Un hommage leur a été rendu lors du congrès COMLAC V au Paraguay, afin de célébrer leurs efforts dans la réunion des organisations catholiques de communication (Unda, OCIC et UCIP) en Amérique Latine en une seule organisation continentale.

Robert Molhant, 1940-2016

Cette année a également été marquée par le triste décès inopiné de Robert Molhant, le 12 avril, chez lui, à Bruxelles. Il était le premier Secrétaire général de SIGNIS (2002-2005), et avait été Secrétaire général de l’OCIC, l’organisation catholique internationale du cinéma (1979-2002). Durant près de 40 ans, il fut un pionnier créatif dans le monde de la communication catholique. À sa retraite de SIGNIS, il a repris la présidence du CREC international, le Centre de Recherche et d’Education en Communication, créé par Pierre Babin à Lyon en 1971.

Encourager et révéler les storytellers

SIGNIS se fixe pour objectif d’aider à améliorer les normes professionnelles dans la production des médias et à promouvoir un storytelling créatif, qui inspire une culture de paix. L’une des façons de faire est de récompenser des productions médiatiques de qualité.

Promouvoir des valeurs au cinéma et à la télévision

Au cours de l’année, plus de 100 jurés SIGNIS issus de plus 40 pays ont participé à 39 festivals internationaux de télévision et de cinéma en Europe, en Amérique du Nord, en Amérique Latine, en Asie et en Afrique. SIGNIS a remis 20 prix, 17 prix étaient des prix œcuméniques et deux ont été remis par des jurys interreligieux.

Des prix médiatiques régionaux et nationaux

Tout au long de l’année, SIGNIS a promu des médias de qualité au niveau régional et national.

Le membre de SIGNIS en Australie et l’Office australienne du film catholique ont nommé Last Cab to Darwin film australien de l’année et La Loi du marché a été désigné meilleur film européen 2015 par SIGNIS Europe.

Lors de sa réunion du 6 au 10 juin à Québec, le conseil d’administration de SIGNIS a commencé à planifier le prochain congrès mondial de SIGNIS, qui se tiendra à l’université Laval à Québec, du 19 au 22 juin 2017. Ce congrès sera suivi par la conférence annuelle des médias catholiques (CMC). Ces deux évènements partageront d’ailleurs une journée. Le thème, également adopté par la CMC, est « Restons connectés pour dire l’espérance ».

Séminaire de télévision à Taiwan

Le TV Desk de SIGNIS a tenu son séminaire annuel pour les professionnels du monde de la télévision du 9 au 12 septembre. Cette année, c’est la ville animée de Taipei, à Taiwan, qui a été choisie pour accueillir le groupe. Environ 40 professionnels, issus de 12 pays

et 4 continents se sont réunis pour discuter et échanger sur le thème « Refléter l’Eglise dans nos productions ».

La Dr. Nataša Govekar, directrice du Département théologique et pastoral du nouveau Secrétariat pour les communications du Vatican, a demandé aux participants comment communiquer « l’Eglise » dans leurs productions, par le langage et les images. Ensuite, les producteurs ont analysé un grand nombre « d’études de cas » et ont partagé leurs visions et expériences avec leurs collègues à Taiwan.

Se réunir nationalement et régionalement

Plus que jamais, les rencontres dans les différents continents ont permis aux membres de partager leurs préoccupations et leurs expériences.

Pour la première fois dans l’histoire de SIGNIS Myanmar, pas moins de 40 délégués de SIGNIS Asie, venus de 13 pays différents, se sont réunis à Yangon (Myanmar), du 21 au 27 août, pour discuter de leurs missions et explorer les possibilités pour parvenir à la durabilité. Les délégués se sont engagés, en répondant à l’appel du Pape François, à créer des projets médiatiques respectueux de l’environnement, autofinancés et intégrés dans les communautés.

Plus tôt en février, à l’institut pastoral de Mangalore, l’assemblée nationale de SIGNIS Inde a réuni plus de 100 participants de tout le pays pour discuter autour du thème « Les médias et les valeurs familiales ».

Le cinquième congrès de communication d’Amérique Latine et des Caraïbes (COMLAC), s’est tenu du 6 au 9 octobre à Asuncion, au Paraguay, sous le thème « Communication, citoyenneté, démocratie et solidarité pour une vie pleine ». Cette réunion continentale de communicateurs catholiques était organisée par l’association de communicateurs catholiques du Paraguay (ACCP), membre au Paraguay de SIGNIS, et SIGNIS-ALC, l’association de communication d’Amérique Latine et des Caraïbes.

Le congrès a abordé un grand nombre de sujets. Il y a eu des ateliers sur l’éducation aux médias pour une culture démocratique, une présentation de publications numériques, sur la presse écrite et sur le développement de la production audiovisuelle. Les participants ont également discuté de la communication moderne sous l’angle d’une Eglise engagée à la dignité de la personne et la nécessité d’un changement social.

Enfin, la Barbade a accueilli la 9ème assemblée de SIGNIS Caraïbes les 6 et 7 septembre. Les délégués de 11 pays se sont intéressés au développement d’un plan stratégique d’une communication pastorale pour la région.

Promouvoir la radio

SIGNIS reconnait l’importance continue de la radio, particulièrement dans les régions les plus pauvres du monde, et a des liens avec l’Association mondiale des radiodiffuseurs communautaires (AMARC - www.amarc.org/?q=fr).

L’importance actuelle de la radio a été rappelée en novembre, lorsque SIGNIS Brésil fut un contributeur majeur du documentaire multimédia Mariana, un an après, qui raconte les histoires de ceux dont les vies ont été impactées par l’effondrement d’un barrage en 2015. Avec le soutien du réseau des radios catholiques, de journaux, de télévisions catholiques, d’internet et de réseaux sociaux, le projet a rassemblé des reportages radios, un documentaire pour la télévision, et du journalisme web et de presse écrite. Le documentaire a été diffusé dans 230 radios, 11 journaux, 8 chaines de télévision ainsi que sur le web et dans les réseaux sociaux.

En août, SIGNIS Asie a organisé un atelier de 5 jours sur la radio communautaire, au Wisma Studio Audio Visual Puskat à Yogyakarta en Indonésie. Le programme était coordonné par Bernadetta Widiandayani, présidente de SIGNIS Asie et du desk radio de SIGNIS. Une vingtaine de participants étaient présents et représentaient plus de 10 pays asiatiques. Ils ont discuté de la durabilité économique et de l’adaptation au monde numérique.

En juin, un grand nombre de programmes radio du Canada et des Etats-Unis ont été primés au Gabriel Awards.

SIGNIS embrasse le journalisme et la presse

En 2016, SIGNIS a souligné les accomplissements du journalisme et de la presse catholique et a encouragé le networking.

En janvier, les 20ème journées François de Sales, organisées par la Fédération des Médias Catholiques (FMC), (autrefois Fédération Française de la Presse Catholique) se sont tenues à Annecy, en France. Plus de 250 journalistes et communicateurs se sont réunis durant deux jours pour débattre de la relation entre la religion et l’identité culturelle.

La conférence annuelle des médias catholiques a réuni des centaines de journalistes catholiques d’Amérique du Nord. Cette année, à St Louis en juin, le président du Desk journalisme de SIGNIS, Pierre Murray, et le vice-président, Tony Spence, ont participé, ainsi que le président de SIGNIS, Gustavo Andújar, les Vice-Présidents, Frank Frost et Lawrence John Sinniah ainsi que le Secrétaire général par interim, Ricardo Yañez.

La migration et la peur sociale ont été abordées lors d’un séminaire commun entre la commission européenne et les catholiques et les autres Eglises à Bruxelles, en octobre. Jim McDonnell, secrétaire du Desk Journalisme, y a parlé des réseaux sociaux et de la responsabilité des journalistes et des éducateurs aux médias.

Encourager les jeunes talentsFormer les storytellers et les professionnels des médias de demain est très important pour SIGNIS, comme la création d’un laboratoire de communications (Comm Lab) l’a d’ailleurs souligné. Il est également important de reconnaitre publiquement et d’encourager les nouveaux talents par la remise de prix.

Comm Lab : la jeunesse pour une culture de la paix

En octobre, 12 jeunes journalistes venus du Kenya, de Namibie, de Zambie, du Zimbabwe, de Tanzanie, d’Ouganda, du Ghana, d’Ethiopie et du Nigéria, se sont réunis au centre Don Bosco Youth Educational Services (DBYES) à Nairobi, au Kenya, pour participer à une formation de 10 jours sur la création de la paix par l’usage des médias.

Ils ont approfondi leurs connaissances de l’enseignement social de l’Eglise et leurs compétences en communication

L’atelier était organisé par SIGNIS, en collaboration avec le Bosco Eastern Africa Multimedia Services (BEAMS) et était animé par le père Sebastian Koladiyil, Mr. Larry Rich, Mr. Eugene Wirba et Mr. Lawrence Mberi, ambassadeur du projet CommLab SIGNIS.

Prix pour des jeunes cinéastes

2016 a vu le 11ème anniversaire du SIGNIS East African Talent Award, lors du Festival international du film de Zanzibar (ZIFF). Ce prix de 1.000 Dollars US est offert pour aider des producteurs de films talentueux issus de pays d’Afrique de l’Est. Clementine Dusabejambo (Rwanda) a remporté le prix avec A Place for Myself, l’histoire de la lutte d’une mère contre la stigmatisation de son enfant albinos.

SIGNIS est également impliqué dans le festival PLURAL + (http://pluralplus.unaoc.org) depuis six ans. Des jeunes réalisateurs de films, de téléfilms ou de vidéos du monde entier créent de courtes vidéos en ligne sur la migration, la diversité, et l’inclusion sociale. Cette année, SIGNIS a remis son prix à North to South, de Coniah Pougam Mouiche (Ghana), qui s’intéresse à la migration à l’intérieur-même d’un pays, une réalité souvent oubliée par les médias et les gouvernements.

Communications

SIGNIS communique via de nombreux moyens, entre autres via son magazine bimestriel trilingue (anglais, français et espagnol) SIGNIS Média. Il est disponible en version papier et en version PDF téléchargeable.

SIGNIS sur les réseaux sociaux et sur Internet

L’année dernière, le site internet, www.signis.net, en anglais, français et espagnol, a attiré plus de 269.968 visites.

Les visites sur les pages des réseaux sociaux Facebook (SIGNIS World Catholic Association for Communication et SIGNIS Desks), et YouTube (signisworld) n’ont cessé d’augmenter. En décembre, nous avons atteint les 1700 mentions « j’aime » sur la page principale de SIGNIS sur Facebook. Le compte Twitter @SIGNIS a plus de 1000 abonnés.

Vingt-six newsletters (en anglais, français et espagnol) (SIGNIS Webnews) ont été envoyées à plus de 12.000 personnes, et le TV Desk a envoyé quatre numéros de sa newsletter, dans les trois langues, à plus de 500 contacts.

Les associations de SIGNIS à travers le monde sont également de plus en plus actives sur le web et les réseaux sociaux.

Communications pratiquesSIGNIS Services Rome

SSR promeut les dernières technologies dans les domaines de la radio, la télévision, la vidéo, le cinéma, le journalisme et internet, particulièrement en Afrique. SSR offre également des services de conseil et de gestion de projet pour les médias catholiques en Afrique : il les aide à écrire et soumettre des projets à des agences de financement.

En 2016, SSR a célébré le 65ème anniversaire de ses bureaux à Rome et s’est focalisé sur la promotion de ses nouveaux services lancés en 2015 : « Cinema in a box » (un kit pour des projections de films suivies de débats), « Music in a box » (un studio d’enregistrement de musique et radio), SIGNIS Easy web (création de sites internet) et le nouveau système de connexion VSAT. L’année 2016 fut très positive puisque plusieurs projets majeurs de communication, suivis par le nouveau département d’écriture de

La formation aux médias à travers le monde

A la fin du mois de septembre, un atelier de formation a été organisé par le membre de SIGNIS, CREC International, à Port Moresby pour la Conférences des Evêques catholiques de Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée et des îles Salomon. L’atelier était dirigé par le père Fabrizio Colombo, MCCI, directeur de SIGNIS Services Rome, et s’est notamment focalisé sur l’importance croissante des réseaux sociaux.

Evaluer et recommander des projets médiatiques

SIGNIS n’est pas une agence de nancement et ne nance pas de projets. Cependant, comme service aux œuvres ponti cales missionnaires (OPM), SIGNIS évalue et recommande des projets médiatiques pastoraux d’Afrique, d’Asie, du Paci que et de Vicariats apostoliques en Amérique Latine. Les projets sont nancés par les OPM. Les évaluations sont menées par des comités locaux de SIGNIS et compilés au secrétariat à Bruxelles. En 2016, 289 projets ont été évalués par SIGNIS (voir infographies en page 22).

Dialogue, plaidoyer et collaborationEn 2016, SIGNIS a continué à travailler en étroite collaboration avec Radio Vatican, le nouveau secrétariat pour la communication du Vatican et la Filmothèque vaticane. Le Conseil des médias catholiques (CAMECO - www.cameco.org), est un important partenaire de longue date, et SIGNIS continue à être représenté dans son Conseil d’Administration.

Dialogue œcuménique et interreligieux

Lors de festivals de films internationaux, SIGNIS collabore avec INTERFILM, l’organisation internationale pour établir un dialogue entre Eglise et Cinéma (www.gep.de/interfilm), dans 17 jurys œcuméniques, notamment à Berlin et à Cannes. SIGNIS a également des contacts avec des festivals de cinéma sur la foi, comme Insight, Religion Today et la semaine Cinéma et spiritualité à Barcelone.

SIGNIS participe également à des jurys interreligieux. Cette année, pour la première fois, un jury interreligieux était présent au festival DOK Leipzig. Son prix a été décerné à Cahier Africain, de Heidi Specogna (Allemagne/Suisse), qui couvre les conflits entre les différentes religions et groupes ethniques en Centrafrique.

Au festival iranien de Fajr, à Téhéran, le jury interreligieux a donné son prix à Zemnaco, de Mehdi Gorbanpour, (Iran). Des mentions ont également été décernées à Love marriage in Kabul de Amin Palangi (Australie/Afghanistan) et au court-métrage Hasti de Kamal Parnak, (Iran, 9 minutes).

Le prix, ainsi que 500 francs suisses, remis par le jury interreligieux au festival du film documentaire de Nyon a récompensé Liberation, The User’s Guide de Alexander Kuznetsov (France/Russie).

A Trento, en Italie, se tient le festival Religion Today en octobre, dédié à la culture de paix et au dialogue entre les fois, les cultures, les peuples et les individus. Cette année, le jury SIGNIS a primé le documentaire The Island of The Monks de Anna Christine Girardot (Pays-Bas).

A Barcelone, en novembre, le Cinéma Desk de SIGNIS a organisé avec le gouvernement catalan et le Blanquerna Observatory on Media Religion and Culture, la première rencontre internationale des festivals interreligieux et spirituels.

C’était aussi la première rencontre mondiale de directeurs de festivals internationaux sur les films religieux et spirituels. Les participants venaient du Mexique, d’Argentine, d’Egypte, du Royaume-Uni, d’Italie, d’Allemagne, de Suisse, d’Espagne et de Belgique. Les représentants des festivals en Iran et en Israël n’ont pas pu y assister. Cette réunion avait pour but de réunir des festivals dédiés à la promotion de la culture de paix, de la compréhension et le dialogue entre les peuples, peu importe leurs croyances.

Plaidoyer et dialogue inter-organisation

Depuis 2010, avec l’Association mondiale pour la communication chrétienne (WACC), SIGNIS décerne un prix des droits de l’Homme à un film documentaire. Censored Voices, de Mor Loushy (Israel) a reçu le prix 2015. Ce documentaire met en lumière le côté caché de l’histoire de la guerre de six-jours en 1967.

SIGNIS conserve sa représentation au Conseil de l’Europe à Strasbourg. SIGNIS possède aussi un statut consultatif auprès de l’UNESCO et fait partie du Conseil international pour les films, la télévision, et la communication audiovisuelle, IFTC/CITC (www.cict-unesco.org).

SIGNIS appartient au réseau GPPAC, le partenariat mondial pour la prévention des conflits armés (www.gppac.net) et a de bonnes relations avec l’Alliance des civilisations des Nations Unies (www.unaoc.org).

SIGNIS a un nouveau représentant auprès de l’UNESCO  : Joseph Bamat succède à Daniel Van Espen. Il a assisté à la conférence internationale des organisations non-gouvernementales qui s’est tenue à Paris en décembre 2016. Cette conférence a réuni plus de 120 ONG, partenaires officielles de l’UNESCO. Le thème était « Les défis de la révolution numérique pour les ONG ».

Un año de preparación de nuestro Congreso Mundial

De nuevo nos sorprende la culminación de otro año de trabajo, mientras seguimos avanzando con paso firme, ahora ya en la recta final hacia nuestro Congreso Mundial 2017.

Tanto nuestro Secretariado General como los Servicios de SIGNIS en Roma han estado experimentando procesos de reorganización interna, con la intención de hacer mejor uso de los recursos disponibles y ofrecer una mayor variedad de mejores servicios a nuestros miembros. Los resultados de este empeño pueden apreciarse ya en el nuevo diseño del sitio web y en los nuevos productos y servicios ofrecidos por nuestra oficina de Roma. Por otra parte, no han faltado preocupaciones administrativas durante el año en ambas sedes, pero han sido ya resueltas o están en vías de solución.

Abril trajo una noticia muy triste: el fallecimiento de un hombre que fue durante muchos años el alma de la Asociación: Robert Molhant, un verdadero gigante de las comunicaciones católicas. SIGNIS instituirá un premio para honrar su memoria.

Los Servicios de SIGNIS en Roma celebraron 65 años de apoyo irrestricto a la labor de los misioneros, particularmente en África. El aniversario fue destacado durante una presentación especial del SSR en el Vaticano, que fue muy bien recibida, y que coincidió con una visita del Comité Ejecutivo. Durante su estancia en Roma, los ejecutivos tuvieron también reuniones muy cordiales y productivas con los prefectos de la Secretaría de Comunicación de la Santa Sede y del recientemente creado Dicasterio para los Laicos, la Familia y la Vida.El Consejo de Administración de SIGNIS se reunió en junio en la sede seleccionada para el Congreso, la Universidad Laval en Quebec City, Canadá. Allí pudieron comprobar las excelentes condiciones de las instalaciones, y se tomaron importantes decisiones en relación con el programa del evento.

Momentos destacados del año pasado

SSR: 65 años de servicio a la Iglesia del hemisferio sur

En noviembre, los Servicios de SIGNIS en Roma (SSR), celebraron 65 años de servicio a la Iglesia en el mundo, especialmente en África y Asia, en sus oficinas del Palazzo San Calixto, en Roma.

Los orígenes de los SSR se remontan a 1951, cuando, respondiendo a una solicitud expresa del Santa Sede, el Servicio Misionero fue establecido por la entonces Organización Católica Internacional del Cine (OCIC). Después de la formación de SIGNIS, este apostolado se convirtió en los actuales Servicios de SIGNIS en Roma. En los últimos 15 años, los SSR han desempeñado un rol cada vez más importante, en la búsqueda de cerrar la brecha tecnológica que, en el campo de la comunicación, viven las comunidades católicas del “hemisferio sur”.

SIGNIS rinde homenaje a pioneros de la comunicación latinoamericana

En octubre, SIGNIS reconoció el trabajo de la Hermana María Fidelis Tibaldo, FSP (Argentina), de Attilio Hartmann SJ (Brasil) y del comunicador Elson Faxina (Brasil), al nombrarlos Miembros Honorarios de nuestra Asociación. Este tributo se realizó en el marco del V Concreso Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Comunicación, realizado en Asunción, Paraguay. Durante la ceremonia, se destacó los esfuerzos de estos profesionales para la convergencia de las organizaciones católicas de comunicación (UNDA, OCIC y UCIP) en una sola asociación continental.

Robert Molhant, 1940-2016

Este año marcó el triste fallecimiento de Robert Molhant, quien murió de forma repentina el 12 de abril en su residencia de Bruselas. Robert Molhant fue el primer Secretario General de SIGNIS (2002-2005) y Secretario General de OCIC (1979-2002). Durante casi cuarenta años, fue un creativo pionero del mundo de la comunicación católica. Al terminar su trabajo en SIGNIS, asumió la Presidencia de CREC, el instituto de comunicación y capacitación en medios fundado por Pierre Babin en Lyon, Francia, en 1971.

Animar y celebrar a los narradores de historias

SIGNIS busca elevar los estándares profesionales en la producción de contenidos mediáticos y promover historias creativas que inspiren una cultura de paz. Un modo de alentar esta dinámica es otorgar premios a producciones de calidad.

Promoción de valores en el cine y la televisión

Durante el año, más de 100 jurados SIGNIS, de más de 40 países, participaron en 39 festivales internacionales de cine y televisión en Europa, Norte América, Latinoamérica, Asia y África. SIGNIS otorgó 20 premios, 17 premios ecuménicos y tres más en jurados interreligiosos (Nyon, Teherán, Leipzig). SIGNIS reconoce como Miembros Honorarios de la asociación a: Prof. Elson Faxina (Brasil); P. Attilio Hartmann, SJ (Brasil); y la Hna. María Fidelis Tibaldo, FSP(Argentina)

El miembro de SIGNIS en Australia y la Oficina Católica Australiana de Cine, seleccionaron a Last Cab to Darwin como la Película Australiana de 2015 y el largometraje francés La Loi du marché (El precio del hombre) ganó el Premio de SIGNIS-Europa a la major película europea de 2015.

SIGNIS-Japón, otorgó en mayo de 2016, el Premio Católico de Japón a la película de la realizadora Naomi Kawase, An; también realizaron el documento conmemorativo: Premios Católicos de Japón: 40 años de historia, para conmemorar este aniversario.

En Norteamérica, en St. Louis, Missouri, la Academia Católica de Profesionales de la Comunicación, celebró en junio su 51 Ceremonia de Premios Gabriel. Desde 1965, estos premios se otorgan a programas de radio y de television que entretienen y enriquecen a sus audiencias con “una mirada verdadera hacia la humanidad y una visión de la realidad de la vida”.” Asimismo, en noviembre, Communications et Société en Quebec otorgó al filme Tuktuq de Robin Aubert, con su premio anual Robert-Claude Bérubé.

También durante noviembre, se realizó la prestigiada entrega de premios 39 SIGNIS Salutation Film and Teledrama (Reconocimiento a películas y telenovelas) en Sri Lanka, galardón que reconoce y honra a profesionales de los medios de comunicación del Sureste Asiático.

Conectando a profesionales de medios

Durante 2016, SIGNIS continuó construyendo espacios para que, profesionales de medos de comunicación, puedan enconstrase, generen redes de colaboración y compartan experiencias.

Congreso Mundial

El Consejo Directivo de SIGNIS se reunió del 6 al 10 de junio en Quebec, Canada, para continuar con la planeación del Congreso Mundial SIGNIS, que se realizará en la Universidad Laval de Quebec, del 19 al 22 de junio de 2017. Nuestro Congreso se enlazará con el Conferencia anual de Medios Católicos (CMC), con quienes compartiremos un día de trabajo en común. El tema de nuestro encuentro mundial también fue adopatado por la CMC: Sembrar esperanza.

Seminario de Televisión en Taiwan

Del 9 al 12 de septiembre, SIGNIS realizó su reunion annual para profesionales de la Televisión. Este año, la cita fue en la vibrante Taipei, Capital de Taiwan, donde, al menos 40 profesionales de doce países y cuatro continents intercambiaron reflexiones a partir del tema del Seminario: La imagen de la Iglesia en nuestras producciones.

La Doctora Nataša Govekar, directora del Departamento de Teología Pastoral de la Secretaría de Comunicación de la Santa Sede desafió a los participantes para buscar nuevas formas de comunicar a la “Iglesia” a través de palabras e imágenes. También, los Productores analizaron “casos de estudio” y compartieron experiencias y proyectos con sus colegas en Taiwán.

Integración nacional y regional

Como es costumbre, las reuniones en diversos continentes permitieron a los miembros compartir intereses y experiencias.

Por primera vez en la historia de SIGNIS el miembro en Myanmar, al menos 40 delegados de SIGNIS-Asia, procedentes de 13 países, se reunieron en la capital Yangon, del 21 al 27 de agosto; para deliberar sobre la misión y explorar la búsqueda de una mayor sustentabilidad.

Los delegados se comprometieron, atendiendo la llamada del Papa Francisco, a construir proyectos amigables con el medio ambiente, autosustentables y que integren a medios comunitarios.

Cómo comunicar en sociedades cada vez más seculares fue el tema tratado por los participantes en la Asamblea general de SIGNIS-Europa en Cracovia, Polonia, en junio, mientras que la Asamblea de SIGNIS-Asia en Sri Lanka en agosto trató sobre la influencia de los medios sociales en las familias.

A principios de febrero, en el Instituto Pastoral de Mangalore, la Asamblea Nacional SIGNIS India 2016 reunió a 100 participantes de todo el subcontinente para discutir el tema “Medios de Comunicación y Valores Familiares”. El VI Congreso Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Comunicación (COMLAC, V) tuvo lugar del 6 al 9 de octubre en Asunción, Paraguay, con el tema “Comunicación, ciudadanía, democracia y solidaridad para una vida plena”. Este encuentro continental de comunicadores católicos fue organizado por la Asociación de Comunicadores Católicos de Paraguay (ACCP), el miembro de Paraguay de SIGNIS y SIGNIS-ALC. El Congreso exploró una amplia variedad de temas. Hubo talleres sobre Educomunicación para una cultura democrática, presentación de publicaciones en línea, medios impresos y desarrollo producciones audiovisuales.

Los participantes también reflexionaron sobre las comunicaciones contemporáneas desde la perspectiva de una Iglesia comprometida con la dignidad de la persona y la necesidad de un cambio social.

Asimismo, Barbados acogió la IX Asamblea de SIGNIS-Caribe del 6 al 7 de septiembre. Los delegados de once países discutieron sobre el desarrollo de un plan pastoral de comunicación estratégica para la región.

Promover la radio

SIGNIS reconoce la perenne importancia de la radio, sobre todo en las regiones más pobres del mundo, muestra de ello es su pertenencia a la AMARC, la Asociación Mundial de Radios Comunitarias (www.amarc.org).

Con el apoyo de la Red católica de radios, medios impresos, la televisión católica, Internet y otros medios de comunicación, el proyecto integró producciones radiofónicas, un documental para televisión, y reportajes para revistas, diarios y medios digitales. El documental presentado en 230 emisoras de radio, once periódicos y 8 canales de televisión, también fue difundido en sitios web y en redes sociales. En agosto, SIGNIS-Asia organizó un Taller de Radio Comunitaria, en el Wisma Studio Audio Visual Puskat de Yakarta, Indonesia. Esta capacitación fue coordinada por Bernadeta Widiandayani, Presidenta del Departamento de Radio de SIGNIS. Veinte participantes de 10 países asiáticos, compartieron ideas sobre sustentabilidad y sobre cómo adaptar la radio a un entorno digital. En junio, una amplia gama de programas de radio de Canadá y los Estados Unidos fueron galardonados en los Premios Gabriel.

SIGNIS abraza al periodismo y a los periodistas

Durante 2016, SIGNIS destacó los logros de los periodistas y de la prensa católica, animándolos a conectarse en red.

En enero, la edición 20 de las Jornadas Francisco de Sales, organizada por la Federación Francesa de Medios Católicos, tuvo lugar en Annecy, Francia. Más de 250 periodistas y comunicadores se reunieron durante dos jornadas de reflexion y discusión sobre los nexos entre la religión y la identidad cultural.

La Conferencia Anual de Medios Católicos reúne a cientos de periodistas católicos de América del Norte. Este año, en St. Louis, en junio, participaron de este evento el Presidente del Departamento de Periodismo de SIGNIS, Pierre Murray y el Vicepresidente del mismo, Tony Spence; así como el Presidente de SIGNIS, Gustavo Andújar y los Vicepresidentes, Frank Frost y Lawrence John Sinniah, así como el Secretario General Interino, Ricardo Yáñez. La migración y el miedo, fueron el tema de un seminario conjunto entre la Comisión de la Unión Europea y las Iglesias en Bruselas, en octubre. Jim McDonnell, Secretario del Departamento de Periodismo, habló sobre los medios de comunicación social y la responsabilidad de los periodistas y los educadores.

Promover el talento de los jóvenesLa formación de futuros guionistas y profesionales de los medios es fundamental para SIGNIS, como se puso de manifiesto en la creación del Laboratorio de Comunicación. También es importante reconocer públicamente y alentar a los nuevos talentos.

El Laboratorio de Comunicación: Jóvenes para una cultura de paz

En octubre, doce periodistas y comunicadores de Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Etiopia y Nigeria, Se reunieron en el Don Bosco Youth Educational Services (DBYES) en Karen, Nairobi, Kenia, para una capacitación de diez días, del 17 al 28 de octubre. Este entrenamiento versó sobre construcción de paz a través de los medios de comunicación. Los participantes, ampliaron sus conocimientos sobre la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia y sobre habilidades de comunicación, con el objetivo de crear conciencia de la necesidad de paz y justicia en sus comunidades y en el mundo.

Este taller fue organizado por SIGNIS en colaboración con Bosco Eastern Africa Multimedia Services (BEAMS), y con el apoyo del Padre Sebastian Koladiyil SDB; Larry Rich, Eugine Wirba y el Embajador del Proyecto del Laboratorio de Comunicación en África de SIGNIS, Lawrence Mberi.

Premios de cine para la juventud

En 2016 se celebró el 11 aniversario del Premio SIGNIS al Talento del África Oriental en el Festival cinematográfico de Zanzíbar Internacional (ZIFF). Este premio está dotado con mil dólares americanos para ayudar a productores jóvenes de países de África Oriental. Clementine Dusabejambo (Rwanda) ganó el premio con su película A Place for Myself, una historia que narra el periplo de una madre que lucha contra la estigmatización de su hija albina.

SIGNIS participa desde hace cinco años en el festival PLURAL+ (www.unaoc.org/ pluralplus). Jóvenes videastas y productores de TV del mundo entero presentan en línea sus cortos de video sobre la migración, la diversidad y la inclusión social. Este año SIGNIS concedió su premio a North to South de Coniah Pougam Mouiche (Ghana), un documental que explora la migración en el interior de los países, realidad muchas veces ignorada por los medios de comunicación y por os gobiernos.

Comunicaciones a nivel mundialSIGNIS se comunica con sus miembros por múltiples canales. Éstos incluyen su revista trimestral trilingüe (en inglés, francés y español), SIGNIS Media, disponible en formato impreso y en su versión digital que puede ser descargada en nuestro sitio web.

SIGNIS en redes sociales e Internet

El año pasado el sitio web, www.signis.net, en inglés, francés y español, atrajo más de 269 mil visitas. Las visitas a los sitios de las redes sociales: Facebook (World Catholic Association for Communication, y SIGNIS Desks) y YouTube (signisworld) continuaron aumentando. En diciembre, alcanzamos la marca de los 1.700 “me gusta” en la página principal de Facebook. La cuenta de Twitter @SIGNIS tiene ya más de 1.000 seguidores.

Se enviaron 26 ejemplares (en inglés, francés y español) del boletín electrónico de noticias (SIGNIS Webnews) a 12 mil subscriptores cada uno de ellos, mientras que el Departamento de TV distribuyó cuatro números de su Boletín de Noticias de TV en tres idiomas a más de 500 contactos.

También las asociaciones de SIGNIS en el mundo entero son cada vez más activas en redes sociales e Internet.

Comunicaciones con sentido práctico

Los Servicios de SIGNIS en Roma

SSR promueve las últimas tecnologías fáciles de usar para la radio, la televisión, el video, el cine, el periodismo y la Internet, sobre todo en África. Ahora ofrece servicios de consultoría y gestión de proyectos para medios católicos en África, para ayudarlos a escribir y presentar proyectos a las agencias de financiamiento (ver infografía en página 32).

En 2016, SSR celebró su 65 aniversario de la apertura de su oficina en Roma. También durante este año, su trabajo se concentró en la promoción de los nuevos servicios lanzados durante 2015: cine en una caja (un kit para la proyección y realización de cine-debates), música en una caja (un estudio de grabación de música y audio digitales), SIGNIS Easy-Web (para la creación de sitios web) y el nuevo sistema de conexión satelital VSAT, que se ha enriquecido por los resultados obtenidos en la captación de fondos para los principales proyectos de comunicación del Departamento de desarrollo de proyectos de SSR. Formación mediática en el mundo

A finales de septiembre, un taller de medios de comunicación fue organizado por el miembro de SIGNIS CREC Internacional, para la Conferencia Episcopal de Nueva Guinea y las Islas Salomón, en Port Moresby. Esta capacitación fue dirigida por el Padre Fabrizio Colombo y, a la par de otros temas mediáticos, se centró en el cada vez más importante avance de las redes sociales.

Evaluar y recomendar proyectos de comunicación

SIGNIS no es una agencia de financiamiento. Como un servicio a las Sociedades Misionales Pontificias (SMP), SIGNIS evalúa y recomienda proyectos relacionados con medios pastorales de África, Asia, el Pacífico y los vicariatos apostólicos en América Latina. Los fondos para cada proyecto son desembolsados directamente por las SMP. Las evaluaciones las realizan comités seleccionados por las SIGNIS locales y son finalmente compiladas en la Secretaría de Bruselas. En 2016 SIGNIS evaluó un total de 289 proyectos (ver infografía en página 32).

Diálogo, reivindicación y colaboraciónDurante 2016 SIGNIS siguió colaborando estrechamente con Radio Vaticana, el Consejo Pontificio para las Comunicaciones Sociales y la Filmoteca Vaticana. El Consejo de Medios Católicos (CAMECO) (www.cameco.org), es un importante aliado de muchos años, y SIGNIS siguió representado en su Consejo Directivo.

Diálogo ecuménico e interreligioso

SIGNIS colabora con la organización internacional protestante para el cine, INTERFILM (www.gep.de/interfilm) en jurados ecuménicos en 17 festivales cinematográficos internacionales, incluyendo Berlín y Cannes. También se han consolidado los contactos con festivales de temática religiosa como Religion Today y con la Semana de Cine Espiritual de Barcelona.

SIGNIS también participa en jurados interreligiosos. Este año, por primera vez, un jurado interreligioso participó en el festival DOK Leipzig, otorgando el Premio Interreligioso a la película Cahier Africain de Heidi Specogna (Alemania/Suiza), que explora los conflictos entre las creencias y tribus de la República Centro Africana.

En el Festival de Irán Fajr Film Festival, realizado en Teherán del 20 al 25 de abril, el jurado interreligioso premió a Zemnaco de Mehdi Gorbanpour (Irán), junto con las menciones especiales al filme Love marriage in Kabul de Amin Palangi (Australia/Afganistán) y al cortometraje Hasti de Kamal Parnak (Irán).

También en abril, un Jurado Interreligioso otorgó su Premio, junto con 5 mil francos suizos, al mejor documental del Festival de Nyon, Francia; concedido a Liberation, The User’s Guide de Alexander Kuznetsov (Francia/Rusia).

Durante noviembre, en Barcelona, el Departamento de Cine de SIGNIS, organizó, en colaboración con el Gobierno de Cataluña y el Observatorio Blanquerna de Medios de Comunicación, Religión y Cultura, la primera reunión internacional festivales de cine espiritual y religioso.

Este evento también fue la primera reunión mundial de directores de estos festivales, al que acudieron participantes de México, Argentina, Egipto, Reino Unido, Italia, Alemania, Suiza, España y Bélgica. Esta reunión se centro en el trabajo que realizan estos festivales para la promoción de la cultura de paz y el entendimiento y diálogo entre las personas. understanding and dialogue between peoples de todos los credos.

Reivindicación y diálogo interorganizacional

Desde 2010, SIGNIS, en conjunto con la Asociación Mundial para la Comunicación Cristiana (WACC), ha dado un Premio Anual de Derechos Humanos a un largometraje documental. Censored Voices de Mor Loushy (Israel) recibió el Premio 2015, cuya historia registra un pasaje no conocido de la Guerra de los Seis Días de 1967.

SIGNIS también tiene estatuto consultivo en la UNESCO y pertenece al Consejo Internacional para el Cine, la Televisión y la Comunicación Audiovisual, IFTC/CITC (www.cict-unesco. org).

SIGNIS pertenece a GPPAC, la Alianza Global para la Prevención de Conflictos Armados (www.gppac.net) y a la Red Internacional para una Cultura de No Violencia y Paz (www.nvpdecade.org), y tiene importantes vínculos de colaboración con la Alianza de Civilizaciones de las Naciones Unidas (www.unaoc.org).

El representante de SIGNIS Joseph Bamat, quien remplazó a Daniel Van Espen como nuevo delegado de SIGNIS ante la UNESCO participó en la Conferencia Internacional de Organizaciones No-Gubernamentales de la UNESCO, en Paris, en diciembre de 2016.  Este año, la conferencia también fue la oportunidad de examinar el trabajo colectivo que las organizaciones no-gubernamentales han realizado en el año 2015-2016, y para vislumbrar líneas de acción comunes para una perspectiva global de colaboración para 2017-2018. A la par, los participantes eligieron un nuevo Presidente para la Conferencia, así como un nuevo Comité de Enlace entre las ONG’s y la UNESCO.
