PLATFORM STATEMENT

I’ve been in the industry for almost 24 years now. I spent 13 years on the supplier

side starting as a booking agent, holding various positions from ticketing, customer

service, quality control and ending as an operations analyst. I took a hiatus to the

HR world dealing with people and issues straight on but still processing travel in the

meantime. As anyone knows in the industry or by the words of Hotel California, “you

can never leave,” I rolled into the buyer side as travel manager. I had the privilege

to find my local chapter, Tennessee BTA. Being involved in the local chapter has

helped me grow and develop both personally and professionally, collaborate and

network among my peers and stay up to date on the evolution of travel. If I’ve

learned anything and I want my peers in the industry to know is that you are never

alone, there is always someone willing to listen, willing to help and willing to help you

7

8

succeed. With the opportunity to represent the members of GBTA as GBTA Direct

Member At Large, I will execute my vision for you by the following:

n ENGAGE: Member engagement is vital to the success of GBTA. I want every

member of the local chapters to feel that they are part of the overall association. I

want them to feel and know they are part of the success of the Industry. The local

chapters do so much and attribute to the overall success of GBTA. We need to

expand on a community forum for the chapters highlighting them more than just

their monthly meetings and activities. You engage by including and recognizing,

this is a partnership and it takes both GBTA and the local chapters to succeed.

Success is best when it is shared. When you inspire people to invest in themselves

they can only go further.

n COLLABORATE: GBTA is a Global Association. What we know of the business

travel industry is it is a direct reflection of the economy. GBTA operates in six

continents and our members represent countries in those perspective areas.

I would love to see collaboration to increase our networking, attracting and

retaining talent where we are continuing to grow on the foundation we have but

also expanding with the with band we have in place.

n INSPIRE: GBTA provides many outlets for education and resources and tools for

professional development. I know our members want to be the best they can be

in their roles. We need to establish a platform to make finding those outlets and

providing the material easier and manageable. We are in volunteer roles and time

is of the essence but knowledge is always power.

I’m passionate about this industry, thankful for the mentors I’ve had and want to

build while giving back for the successful future of our members and association.

As we look forward to our annual GBTA conference with the theme of MOMENTUM,

momentum demands movement. I would be honored and privileged to have your

vote as Direct Member At-Large.

If you looking for a direct member advocate for the challenging and dynamic travel

industry, I am your candidate. I would be honored to serve on the GBTA board for the

next 3 years serving to represent all Direct members worldwide. I am very committed

to the GBTA association and have served in various volunteer positions at the local

chapter/affiliate level throughout my career, in addition to holding the Direct Member

at Large position since November 2017. I am a very passionate person and I am not

afraid to ask questions or back down on difficult issues. I have built my reputation

on honesty and integrity and ‘calling it like it is”. I am not very good at politics as

I believe in ‘what you see, if what you get”. I am more of a maverick than a “yes”

person. I respect my fellow colleagues and get along with most individuals, which has

led me to develop many working relationships and in many cases great friends.

I am a working professional that has never written a platform statement before nor

am I long winded, therefore I respect your time so I will only summarize my platform

with key points of my platform. FOR YOUR DIRECT CONNECTION to the GBTA

Board, I will:

n Carry the “Momentum”

– Continue to support this association in terms of representing the Direct member

community and provide leadership, guidance, and experience to elevate GBTA

to the next level in order to share new/best travel practices and policies,

educational and networking opportunities and exposure to new products and

technologies innovations that can help shape this industry’s future

– Transparency to our membership by focusing on audit/finance of the

association, committees and the Allied Leadership Council and challenge what

doesn’t make sense

– Be open for new ideas and different thought processes so I can be your voice

representing all Direct members on the Board

– I don’t ever want anyone to forget that this Association is made up of

volunteers and want to find ways to reward people for their efforts

n Continue to support One Global Association

– Responsible growth of GBTA’s existing regional operations in the US, Europe,

Canada, Latin America and Asia-Pacific

– Enhance Educational opportunities for all regions

n Ensure GBTA offers the return on investment for all US Chapters

– Help remaining Affiliates become Chapters

– Strengthen GBTA’s relationship with all Chapters

– Ensure all Chapters have access to great speakers and educational

opportunities

– Hold GBTA accountable to invest in technology that Chapters can benefit from

– Ensure that Chapters can have access to GBTA key staff positions for help with

marketing support, financial/tax filing etc.

– Work with GBTA to offer more Chapter scholarships or ways to help Chapters

in financial ways

11 1111

n Continue with my Educational Passion

– Contribute to work on the Blue Ribbon Education Panel

– Help determine what educational content is most relevant, needs refresh or

develop new content to appeal to the “seasoned” travel manager and the new

millennial travel manager who continue to enhance their career

– Ensure the team clearly identifies a career pathway for educational learning for

all members

– Continue to serve on the Car Rental Task Force. Refresh the current RFP to

include other ground transportation, such as towncar/limo services and car

sharing models

– Make sure educational programs serves our current members and to also

attract and develop new people coming into this industry

Bottom Line:

You do have a choice on who will significantly contribute to overseeing your interests

on the GBTA Board. I hope by reading what I have presented above or by personally

knowing what I stand for and/or can accomplish, I would be your candidate of choice

to represent all Direct members.

I possess the leadership and knowledge, and let’s not forget the passion and vision

for where this Association needs to be in the next 3 years. I would be grateful for

your vote in the upcoming election during the Convention. I thank you for your

consideration and taking the time to read all this!

n Business Travel News: “Women You Should Know” (2017)

First, thank you for what you do for GBTA. People matter to me and I believe our

members are the heartbeat of this association. It was a privilege to be appointed to

the GBTA Board of Directors in December 2017 as part of an unprecedented open

6-month term and it is an honor to have been nominated now.

After graduating from the University of Virginia, I began my career as a professional

matchmaker in Charlotte, NC. After a year of that adventure, I was hired by Bank

of America where I spent 10 years in both Global HR and Corporate Security. It was

actually in 2009 at the bank, that I was first introduced to GBTA (NBTA at the time).

I had no idea then that this industry association would impact my career in the

ways that it has, nor did I know that I would meet some of my closest friends and

colleagues here.

1313

It was my exposure to our accomplished GBTA members that motivated me to get

more involved. I went back to my alma mater as part of the first GBTA Manager

Level certification course at the UVA Darden School of Business, was a member of

the GBTA Travel Risk Management Maturity Model (TRM3) Task Force, accepted

many invitations to speak at GBTA Chapter events, served as Chair of the GBTA Risk

Committee and led the 2017 winning team as a Co-Mentor for the GBTA Ladders

Emerging Leaders Program. These experiences coupled with my past six months

serving on the Board have given me a strong understanding of this association and

its growing opportunities.

I take the fiscal responsibility of this Board seat seriously and am committed to

the time and travel that is required to be at meetings in-person in order to fully

contribute. I feel strongly that integrity, professionalism and grace are required to

serve at this time and I am confident that I will deliver.

P.S. I love NASCAR, reading, golf and writing thank you notes. My family gave me

values and my faith gives me strength.

GBTA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION 2018

CANDIDATE FOR ALLIED MEMBER AT LARGE

Jeffrey Maurer, CTE, CRM, LGBT Travel Specialist

National Account Executive

Red Roof Inn

I began my experience with GBTA at the Chapter Level as a member of the Ohio

Valley Business Travel Association. An active member since 2010 in the Chapter,

I started my volunteerism as Membership Committee with a strong focus on helping

to balance our membership base with more Direct Members. I then advanced to

Membership Chair to continue the efforts of increasing our membership through

promoting the Chapter’s benefits to both potential Allied and Direct members. I then

advanced on to serve on the Executive Board as the Secretary/Treasurer. In 2014 we

decided to separate the Secretary and Treasurer position into two separate roles.

I continued as Treasurer which I am still serving as today. Through my passion of

Hospitality, I have been a key player in ensuring our members stay engaged, and

we provide resources that are impactful, meaningful, and educational. Our chapter

has grown significantly in membership and attendance at our Quarterly meetings

almost hitting the large chapter status and continuing to have 100+ attendees at our

meetings. My engagement with GBTA started many years ago as a participant in the

annual Convention Expo. I officially joined GBTA in 2014 and stepped up to serve on

the Virtual Payment Task Force, and then the Payment Solutions Committee. I have

been tasked with growing our market share in the B2B segment in the Midwest

U.S. and through my participation in GBTA I have been able to secure a very vast

networks of clients and peers.

It has been an honor and a privilege to be an active member in GBTA. The education,

networking, and leadership have helped to develop me both professionally and

personally. Although many will feel my tenure with the organization has been

short and I might not be the best choice I ask you to take the time to look at my

background and explore my passion for the Industry. I am committed to be the voice

of my fellow Allied Members ensuring we remain a core asset to the organization.

I am very MOTIVATED to work hard and help streamline the process of Business

Travel. We have over the years added many layers, and processes that have not

only added additional work, but also additional expense to travel buying. Together

with the Allied Membership I would love to take a deep look at the processes we

have and look for areas we can improve on with current technology. I also want to

ensure our educational options provide the proper ROI for both our Direct and Allied

membership along with our Certifications. I am ENERGIZED to make a difference and

be a positive role model for the new generations entering our field. I would like to see

GBTA become more inclusive and provide incentive for the SBE side, so they also can

look to GBTA for guidance and education, to help drive more Direct Members to the

16

organization. I will always be a proponent for the Chapters as this is where I began

my membership, and this is where I have gained the most valuable contributions

to my professional development. I want to share my PASSION for the industry

and Business Travel in particular, to help us ensure we entice future generations to

engage in careers within our industry. Promoting GBTA at the College level through

campaigns and engagement will also be a priority for me. I am out in the field every

day conversing with the travel buyer and am on the front line hearing the challenges

and the successes.

I know my goals are big, but I also know with your support we can achieve wonderful

things and continue to move our organization forward. GBTA will remain the

organization sought after for advice on anything travel related.

Momentum is the theme of this year’s conference and yes, GBTA should be very

proud of the momentum that has been created by the collective efforts of the many

volunteers—locally and globally as well as the dedicated professionals who together

make GBTA the travel industry’s preeminent Association.

18

1919

Our Momentum must continue. I have had the opportunity to meet with members

and staff from all regions of the world and what they all have in common is their

passion for our industry and for their desire to do their part to further the growth and

continuous improvement of our Association. A lot has been accomplished and we are

headed in the right direction... we must continue to build on that momentum.

Progress has been made however we must not become complacent. Complacency

destroys momentum. As the leading voice of the business travel industry, every

leader in the Association should have a clear understanding of how their Chapter,

Committee, Region or Professional responsibility contributes to the overall good

of the Association and should be willing to embrace bold new ideas to move our

Association higher.

As a member of the GBTA Board I will do my part to prevent complacency. My

platform is based on my vision for the Association. I call it my Vision 2020 plan.

My Vision 2020 plan is a set of beliefs that I will use to influence my representation

on the Board for the next two years.

Allied Members Play a Critical Role in our Association

As your Allied Member at Large on the GBTA Board, I will take my role seriously. I

understand clearly that my job is to represent our Allied Membership and as one of

only two elected Board Members I realize that every vote counts. As a Board Member

who served two previous terms, I never missed a Board Meeting nor a vote.

Although our Association is buyer-driven, I clearly understand the critical role that

our Allied Membership plays in every global region, our local chapters and on the

many committees.

Without the strong financial support and commitments from our Allied Member

organizations, GBTA as we know it today would not exist. The Allied Leadership

Council (ALC) has been and will continue to play in an important role in providing

a voice for the Allied Members in our Association. The GBTA Board relies upon the

ALC for guidance and support on key policy decisions that benefit all the members of

our association.

Many Regions One Global Association

GBTA must continue to support and invest in our global regions. Our Allied Member

companies who have operations within the various regions should either continue

to or invest more in supporting GBTA’s efforts and initiatives throughout the world.

As a part of my Vision 2020 approach, I will work with the Allied community as well

as the ALC in seeking out new investment opportunities in each region. Our Allied

supporters expect to see a positive ROI on their investments and it is up to the

Regional leaders (volunteers and professional staff) to make that happen.

I have had the opportunity to attend many of the Regional Conferences over the past

seven years and understand that despite the cultural differences from one region

to the next, we have so much more in common. The professional staff members

and volunteers in each Region have a passion for this industry and work very hard to

ensure that their regions offer the professional and personal development that their

members ask for to be successful.

2020

As a Member of the LATAM Advisory Board I have worked hard to support the

growing need in that region for advanced education opportunities and have fully

supported a “Sister Chapter” concept which can be adopted on a global basis.

Whether you live in Bogota, Berlin, Bengaluru or Boston the sharing of knowledge

and best practices can be extremely beneficial. The concept of “learning from each

other” will only further the growth of our Association by providing greater value to

our members... on a global scale.

We Must Continue to Invest in This Generation... And the Next

GBTA must continue to invest in education and professional development not only

for members of this generation but for the next.

One of the key pillars of GBTA is providing education and professional development

to its members.  GBTA has done a very good job in developing and implementing

education programs through the GTP and GLP programs... however, our members

need advanced programs in every region served by the Association. We must

continue to develop education programs designed to attract and develop the best

new talent possible into this industry.

Climbing Higher with Ladders

Mentoring and providing professional development for our future leaders is essential.

I have had the opportunity to serve as a Mentor in the Ladders program since

its inception. I believe the GBTA Ladders program has been highly successful in

the personal and professional development of our future industry leaders. I have

benefited tremendously from participating in this program and am confident that

many others have as well.

As the program continues to grow with participants now from the US, Canada,

Ireland, the UK and Israel, I would fully support efforts to expand the program into

at least two additional Regions over the next two years.

A True Association Differentiator—A Strong and Cohesive Chapter System

We as an Association must continue to support a strong Chapter program... our

Chapter Network is a strategic asset that must not be taken for granted.

As a former Chapter President and long-time member of the Chapter President’s

Council (CPC) as well as the Co-Chair of the Chapter Task Force, I understand

very clearly the tremendous value that Chapters bring to the global Association. In

return, I have seen the great value that GBTA brings to the local Chapters and their

members. Many leaders throughout GBTA and throughout our industry are or were at

one time leaders in their local Chapters.

Active members of local Chapters are often significantly more involved in the

global Association benefiting not only the member from a personal and professional

standpoint but more often provide well-informed and educated employees for their

respective employers.

As a Board Member I will continue my complete support of the Chapter system and

will advocate my support for greater communication and exchanges between the

US Chapters and GBTA Regional organizations throughout the world.

2121

Advocacy—Our Legislative Voice for the Business Travel Industry

Legislative efforts that support business travel on a global scale must continue to be fully

supported. GBTA advocates for policies that better the business travel industry, representing

travel buyers and the travelers they manage.

There are many distractions in the political world. Key issues that have a significant impact on

our members can easily be lost, minimized or simply not addressed without the unwavering

commitment of GBTA to keep our voice at the forefront of our Congressional delegations in

Washington and in other regions of the world (EU for example) where our efforts can truly

make a difference.

Our recent legislative successes in Washington have proven that the cohesive strategy between

GBTA (Board and Staff), the Legislative Advisory Committee, Cornerstone, and the local

Chapters through the Chapter Challenge program for PAC is truly working.

As a GBTA Board Member I will continue my complete support of our Legislative efforts and

I will do all I can to expand our political influence not only in the US but in other regions

where we can truly make a difference.

I Ask for Your Support!

You have a choice before you as to Leaders who will significantly contribute to overseeing our

Association in next two years. As you have seen from what I have presented above, I feel that

I am uniquely qualified to become your next Allied Member at Large on the GBTA Board.

I have the experience, the knowledge, the passion and a vision for our Association and what

it could look like not only in two years, but how it could shape our industry for many years

to come.
