I love to organize! I think that is why I

became interested in baskets. I can

store/hide things in them! Recently, I have

been in the process of redoing my kitchen a

bit: New floor, new furniture, new/old

ladder chandelier, etc. I am trying to find

interesting ways to display my many, many

baskets. I found a dear old “tree" at a yard

sale and hung or sat my little baskets on or

near the tree as shown in the picture. I love

looking at this prominent display of my

small baskets that were lost sitting

elsewhere. I have a feeling that others may

have similar issues with displaying basket

collections and I thought that perhaps others

may have great ways of displaying

baskets. I would love to publish in the next

newsletter any pictures that you would share

with us. I need to find places for all these

Any committee reports

1. Retreat—successful; discussed upcoming retreats and teacher recommendations. Anne Kelly will make contacts. Also, Mr. Hoppe’s light bulb idea (using LED inserted into electric candles in weaving space at Gitt Mansion) was appreciated by all and really improved lighting for the room. Mr. Hoppe was reimbursed for the light bulbs.

2. Odyssey— Odyssey information on website. Everyone got their postcard reminders; website was up several weeks before May 1 registration date. Volunteers for the Odyssey weekend include Suzanne (hospitality room); Michelle R. for ‘water refills’ in weaving room.

3. Handbook/policy manual—awaiting information from the retreat and Odyssey committees. Linda Moore will contact Jude Gallaher about status from the committees. Committee chairs had been given packet of information to complete to assist with writing the handbook/policy manual, including committee budgets, policies, etc. The Board will review this manual and vote on it before presenting it to the guild; we don’t yet know if it will be completed before the annual guild meeting in September.

ANNETTA KRAAYEVELD IS COMING TO CENTRAL PA

BASKET WEAVERS’ GUILD!

OCTOBER 7 AND 8, 2016

TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS:

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7: Camp Hill Giant Grocery Store Community Rm. 9:00-5:00

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8: East Berlin Community Center 9:00-5:00 Annetta Kraayeveld resides in Beloit, Wisconsin. Her website, www.prairiewoodbasketry.com, includes many

of her patterns and kits as well as a blog, The Basket Teacher, and some incredible tutorials. Annetta’s work ranges

from traditional to artsy and from large to itsy, working mostly in rattan reed and hand pounded black ash. She finds

that the challenge of mastering new techniques and weaving the pictures in her mind keep this an exciting art form.

Annetta considers herself a weaver, a teaching-artist and a life-long student of basketry.

This fascination with baskets began when she was a young child, however, her weaving adventure didn’t

begin until 1995. She stumbled upon a weaving book and couldn’t put it down. After hunting down a local weaver

and begging a lesson, she was hooked. Since that time Annetta has been largely self-taught, learning from both her

mistakes and successes. She weaves because she can’t stop. Annetta has taught at the Weaving Odyssey, and at

the CPBWG Retreat, as well as many other basketry conventions.

Annetta will be offering two basket choices for each day. Please see the basket pictures and descriptions on

next page. As our classroom time may be limited to a total of 8 hrs. including lunch time, slower weavers may need

to finish at home, but will know how to finish the basket.

Lunch: At Camp Hill Grocery Store: Bring your own, or buy lunch at the food court at the store.

At East Berlin Community Center: Bring your own lunch or go out/take out from local eateries.

Please complete the registration form, include your check payable to Annetta Kraayeveld, dated the date of the

basket class (10/7/16 or 10/8/16) and send form and check to Donna Kumpf, 517 Windy Way, New Cumberland,

PA 17070.

Registration ends 8/25/2016.

If you have any questions, please contact Donna Kumpf at [email protected] or 717-963-7533 (cell 717-440-

Donna Kumpf found our free basket pattern this time. THANKS to THE BASKET MAKER’S CATALOG and Beth Hester. This basket will be so convenient for picnics and visiting friends this summer. Enjoy!

For a PDF of this pattern, go to http://www.basketmakerscatalog.com/instructions/8390_GraciousGoodness_Pattern%20Sheet.pdf Materials / Supplies Description 2 ea. - 12" Swing Handle with Ears - Handle 70 ft. - 1" Flat Reed - Stakes / Weavers 20 ft. - 1/2" Flat Reed - Weavers 5 ft. - 1/4" Flat Burgundy Dyed Reed - Weavers 25 ft. - #0 Sea Grass - Weavers 5 ft. - 3/8" Flat Reed - Weaver 10 ft. - 1/2" Flat Oval Reed - Rims 5 ft. - #3 Sea Grass - Rim Filler 13 ft. - 1/4" Flat Reed - Lashing 1 Package - Cable Ties Weaving the Base Sort through your 1" Flat material and choose the heavier weight pieces for the stakes. Cut 9 pieces (stakes) 30" long and 13 stakes 25" long from 1" Flat Reed. Soak all the stakes. Mark two stakes--one that's 30" long and one that's 25" long, in the center on the rough side of the reed with a pencil. Place a twist-tie around the center mark of the 25" marked stake and lay it on top of the 30" marked stake at a 90 degree angle, aligning the marks.

NOTE: The twist-tie identifies the center of the base. All stakes will be woven rough side up and placed about 1/4" apart; as you add each stake to your base, align its ends with the ends of these center stakes. Weave all 25" stakes parallel to the center 25" stake; weave all 30" stakes parallel to the center 30" stake. Next, weave a stake above the center horizontal 25" stake and one below, placing each of these stakes under the center stake. Align stake ends. Next, weave 1 30" stake to the right and one to the left of the 30" center stake; weaving over the center stake and under the other 2 stakes. Space all stakes just about 1/4" apart and align the ends. Secure with clothespins as needed.. Continue adding stakes, working outward from the center, until you have interwoven all 22 stakes. The woven area (base) should measure 11" x 16" with stakes extending about 7" from the edge of the base on each side. Soak the base and upset the basket by creasing each stake at the edge of the base.

Gracious Goodness Carrier Beth Hester In the Spring of 2009 a group of friends requested I design a basket that would be perfect for carrying casserole dishes of food and other items to community potlucks and church socials. They love the generous size of this Carrier and especially appreciate the two beautiful white oak handles, handmade in our shop in Scottsville, Kentucky, that lay flat on the rim for serving. Size: 11x16 X 4 ½”

Row 1. 1" Flat Reed ( Weave over/outside the fourth stake from each corner on the long sides (for handle placement later). Row 2-3 1/2" Flat Reed Row 4. #0 Sea Grass - Twine this row ( **If your sea grass is in one long piece, fold the piece in half and begin twining--after completing Row 4, lay the length of sea grass to the inside of your basket, weave Row 5 with 1/4", then bring the sea grass to the outside and twine Row 6. Anchor all loose ends of sea grass behind a couple of weavers on the inside of your basket. Row 5. 1/4" Dyed Flat Reed( Weave Rows 5, and 7 in same pattern as Row 3.) Row 6 #0 Sea Grass - Twine this row Row 7 1/2" Flat Reed Row 8 1/2" Flat Reed Row 9 3/8" Flat reed Pack rows. Crease, trim to length, then tuck each stake where the top row of weaver is on the inside of the basket. Hide each tucked end behind a row of 1/2" Flat (Row 7) on the inside of your basket. Cut all remaining stakes flush with the top of the basket. To attach the handles, the handles’ ears will be inserted behind some weavers on the outside and inside of the basket, along a chosen stake. With a circumference of about 54", the handles will fit into the basket along the fourth stake from each corner on the long sides (see photo of completed basket). Before inserting the ears, cut off the "legs" of each ear so that the end of the "leg" on the outside of the basket will hide behind the weaver on Row 1. Taper the "legs'" cut end with a knife or sandpaper so it will more easily slip into position. Repeat for each ear. If you haven’t already done so, place ears into handles. Inserting the handles is much easier if the sides of the basket are completely dry. Using a bone folder or packing tool to assist in prying the weavers along the selected stake, insert an end of one "leg" behind the top row of Sea Grass on the outside of the basket. Now, look to the inside of the basket and, prying with the tool, push the inside ‘leg’ of that ear behind the rows of Sea Grass. Work the ear downward behind the weavers, inside and outside, until the lower edge of the notch is level with the lower edge of the top row of weaving. Insert each ear as described. Soak the 1/2" Flat Oval. Determine the rim lengths, allowing about a 4" overlap. Mark and carve the overlap. Attach rims and #3 Sea Grass rim filler to the basket with cable ties. Using 1/4" Flat Reed, single lash the rims to the basket, creating a backstitch at each ear. Enjoy carrying food and sharing with friends!
