In the beginning of the Haggadah there is a story about five
great sages who celebrated the Seder together in the city of
B’nai Brak. Rabbi Elazar Ben Azariah shares with his
colleagues, that throughout the years that he has been a
rabbi, he never found an adequate explanation to the word
‘all’ that is found in the verse which commands us to
participate in a Seder. That verse states: “that you may
remember the day when you came out of the Land of Egypt
all the days of your life.” ‘all’ seems to be superfluous, as no
one lives more than the days of one’s life – What is meant by ‘all’ the days
of your life?
Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria credits Ben Zoma who explained that ‘all’ teaches
that we must celebrate Pesah even during the nights of our life. It is easy to gather with your family and rejoice during the Seder when things
are going well and our people live during enlightened times. What do you do
when we are in darkness? Do we still force ourselves to celebrate even
when we are at a loss as to the future and what it may hold for us?
There are many stories of Jews who under the most terrible conditions, sat
and observed in their limited ways the Seder, hoping for better times.
As we sit with our families and friends this year, the condition of our people
in Europe, the strained relations between the US and Israel, and the many
uncertainties as to the Peace Talks and the future lay on our minds and
hearts. Ben Zoma encourages us to remember the Exodus. The Mitzvah of
Haggadah , telling the story of our people, has been a most valuable teaching
tool to our children and families throughout the ages. It is alright to discuss
the meaning of Pesah, liberation and freedom under all conditions.
I wish you and your family a Happy, Joyous and Kosher Pesah.

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS
Shalom Aleichem, everyone!!
By the time you read this, we should be starting to see the first glimpses of the end of the winter doldrums. And, just
as we’re hoping for more spring-like activity from gardens and such, Sharei Chesed is in the midst of its annual late
winter / early spring surge of activity as well.
Our annual Purim party was a huge success with lots of good food and good fun. Our thanks to our friend Danny
Levey who, once again, made plenty of hamentashen for the festivities, and who worked with the kids from our
congregation in teaching them the fun of making hamentashen themselves.
As always, lots of great costumes during Purim services and the reading of the Megillah. This was the second year in a
row that our friend, Dr. Neil Covin, performed his magic show for Purim, and, just like last year, it was very well
received. Thanks, Neil!!
Our special classical concert in mid-March filled our sanctuary with the timeless music of Beethoven, as well as the
romantic music of Russia. Bravo to world-renowned cellist Nickolai Kolarov and his accompanist, Gabriel
Quenneville-Belair.
And our thanks to all of you who have contributed, so far, to our annual Maot Hittim fund. Because of your
generosity, Twin Cities families who would otherwise be unable to fully celebrate Passover will be able to enjoy a
proper Seder this year with Matzah, chicken, Kosher wine and all the trimmings. If you have not made a contribution,
yet, please consider doing so, either by check or online at our website. Thank you again for your generosity.
I came across an article in The Atlantic magazine from 2012 about what is billed as the ‘Seder on Top of the World’.
It’s held every year in, of all places, Kathmandu, Nepal – the gateway to the Himalayas - and it is sponsored by the
Kathmandu branch of Chabad (yes, they even have a branch there). When you’re thinking about all of the cleaning
and cooking and how much food to prepare and how many people to expect and wondering how you’re going to get
it all done, these facts might make you feel a little bit better:
1,100 people in attendance (2012)
1,000 bottles of Kosher wine
1,100 pounds of matzah
150 pounds of salami
180 pounds of oil Countless cans and jars of gefilte fish, tuna, olives, pickles and other items – all of which had to be shipped from
New York and Israel months in advance!!
And why Nepal? Many Israelis travel right after their army tour of duty, and Nepal is one of the most popular
destinations.
If you want to find out more about this unique Seder, go to ‘theatlantic.com’ and search for ‘Kathmandu Seder’.
May you and yours enjoy a happy, healthy, Kosher – and possible slightly more intimate - Pesach!!
B’Shalom,
Bernie Miller and Terry Schwartz

CLASSICAL CONCERT AT SHAREI CHESED by BERNIE MILLER
On most days, Sharei Chesed’s sanctuary is filled with the sounds of Shachrit, Mincha/Ma’ariv, or the weekly Torah portion. On Sunday afternoon March 15th, for the first time, it resonated with the
sounds of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and others. That is because we had the honor and privilege of a concert performance by world-renowned cellist Nikolai Kolarov and his accompanist,
pianist Gabriel Quenneville-Belair.
Nikolai is one of our newest members. He is a graduate of the Bulgarian State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria, and a student of Tanya Remenikova – herself a student of the legendary Mstislav
Rostropovich. He is also the founder of the Balkanicus Balkan new chamber music concert series here in the Twin Cities, and is the President of the Balkanicus Institute for Balkan Art, Culture and
History, which promotes the cultures of the Balkans.
Gabriel is from Montreal, Quebec, and has won prizes in both Canada and the United States for his
work, along with working with many other distinguished pianists. He is currently working on his
Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of Minnesota.
Among the works performed that afternoon were:
Cello Sonata, Opus 5 No. 2 by Ludwig van
Beethoven “La Valse d’Amelie” (Amelie’s Waltz) by Yann
Tiersen (from the soundtrack of the 2001
motion picture, “Amelie”)
“Autumn Song” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
“Sentimental Waltz” by Tchaikovsky
“Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff
“Melody in F” by Anton Rubinstein “Chanson Sans Paroles” (Song Without Words)
by Tchaikovsky
In addition, we were treated to what could literally be called the world premiere of a new work by Cantor Michael Winikoff, based on “Eishet Chayil” (A Woman of Valor). Besides having served as
our guest cantor during the High Holy Days for many years, Michael is also a member of “Vocal Essence” (formerly, the Plymouth Music Series) here in the Twin Cities, and is a composer of
instrumental and vocal works (both solo and choral).
The concert was a huge success. There wasn’t a single person in attendance who was not deeply
moved by the beauty of the music and the expressiveness of the performers. And everyone
expressed a strong desire for more such concerts in the future.
Sharei Chesed has always been grateful to its members and friends who display such a wide range of
talents and abilities. Bravo to Nikolai, Gabriel and Michael. We hope to host you all again very
soon!!

ALL ABOUT PESAH The Festival of Freedom is by far the most popular Jewish holiday and is probably observed
more scrupulously than the Holy Days. One of the reasons for Passover's universal interest is
it’s home character. Members of the family travel great distances to be together at the Seder
table with their kin. The desire to participate in a Seder, no matter where a person may be,
indicates that the childhood impressions of the holiday have a fast hold upon the Jewish heart. Pesah has several names, alluding to the various aspects of this holiday, so that each one of us
can identify with and celebrate whole heartedly, the message that is closest to our hearts.
Passover emphasizes the miracle of Jewish homes being spared from the last
plague on that night of the Exodus and the annual celebration that followed.
Festival of Matza stresses that when the time of deliverance arrived nothing
could stop it - people chose freedom over staying behind to prepare
provisions for the trip.
Festival of Spring is the time of rebirth and renewal and also the
Season of our Freedom.
The Seder is a family experience that provides unique and wonderful opportunities to tell our
children the national history of the Jewish people and the story of our individual family. The
stories, the songs, the bitter, salty and sweet food items and the many symbols on the Seder
plate are all there to provide a virtual reality and powerful illustration of the lessons we want
to pass on to our children. Pesah is a demanding holiday - the cleaning, the special diet for a whole week and the extra
expense, but it is worth it. Think of where we are today 3500 years after the Exodus. We talk
about it as if it just happened and we try our best to re-live the experience of the Exodus. It is
a powerful tool by which we pass our heritage to our children. Shep nachas from your
children as they ask “Mah Nishatana” and enjoy your family.
Counting of the Omer Starting with the second night of Pesah, we begin the Counting the Omer until Shavuot. We
count the days and the weeks for a total of seven weeks. The fiftieth day is Shavuot, when we
observe the Revelation at Mount Sinai, Matan Torah.
We wish you and your family a Happy and Kosher Pesah !

Once again we had the joy and privilege of
being able to attend the Washington DC
American Israel Policy Affairs Committee
Annual Convention. For the first time ever, the convention was
completely sold out with over 16,000
attending, including close to 200 in our
Minnesota delegation. It was truly a triumph.
This year’s effort centered on lobbying
Congress to step in, in order to prevent a
terrible deal that would allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons. AIPAC, an organization that contributes zero funding for individual
campaigns, has tremendous influence with our legislators. We met with
our senators and congressmen. Both Democrats and Republicans stressed
to us how important AIPAC’s analysis and views are to them in their
decisions regarding Israel policies. They also stressed how important the
meetings with delegates were to them. It made us feel that we were really
contributing to the process. One congressman, a co-sponsor of one of the
two bills that would force the administration to reveal their negotiations
with Iran and require Congressional oversight, actually told us that he
never makes a decision on Middle East policy without first getting an
opinion from AIPAC. What tremendous satisfaction we get from actually feeling we accomplish
something for both Israel and America by exercising our political rights in
this great country of ours.
So stay informed. Go to the AIPAC website and look at the positions
AIPAC takes on various issues, join AIPAC, attend AIPAC events locally. And
finally make it a goal to join us and our fellow Israel supporters in
Washington and be there for Israel and America.
OUR TRIP TO AIPAC | BY SHARON BERKOWITZ

HELENA ILLNEROVA | BY JUDITH BRIN INGBER
Helena's father Dr Karl Lagus was
imprisoned in Terezin the camp
outside Prague. It was built for
soldiers under the Empress Maria
Teresa. Under the Nazis, all the Jews
of Prague, Bohemia and then many
from the capitols of Europe stayed
there before being sent to Auschwitz.
Whole Czech families tried to survive
in Terezin and a system of illegal
lessons for the children was set up
including performances. Despite the
best efforts of the 160,000 children
only 100 survived. Helena's father made it back after the war and under the Czech
communist regime, he oddly became director of the camp as a tourist site. But the
communists didn't want anyone to see it so it was a non-site. Jerome and I first
visited in 1971 through contacts in Minneapolis, a survivor named Eddie Grosmann,
who also had survived Terezin and Auschwitz. We met Dr. Lagus then and the site
had not been restored. This winter I was able to locate the daughter of Dr Lagus, a
prominent Czech scientist. She and her husband arranged a special tour and we saw
the barracks for the girls over the age of two and for the boys until the age of 16.
We saw the Attic Theatre where performance of Brundibar and a little known
musical called Broucci or Fireflies also took place. The ghetto camp has been
opened to the public. Here we are in the archives which has documentation
including posters of the cabaret and musicals and theatre performances by the adults
and the children too.
"Judith Brin Ingber was invited to teach at the Prague Arts Academy
to lecture on dance in Israel and to also lecture at the Jewish
Museum about dance in the Ghetto WWII Terezin, camp, a
surprising venue for children's classes and performances. She and her
husband Jerome also toured Jewish sites in Prague and then took the
train to Budapest also visiting its Jewish quarter and learning more
about its difficult World War II history."
