Ministry Memorandums — Information Director Lisa Millar provided the Board of Trustees an outline of the recent announcements from the Ministry of Education. Topics discussed included the following: The Ministry will provide $40 million to support mental health initiatives. Funding includes $25 million for school boards to make mental health workers in secondary schools, who were hired last year, permanent. This year marked the first year that Rowan’s Law was also officially acknowledged by the province. The government is investing $105,000 to expand efforts to improve concussion safety across the province. The new Reciprocal Education Approach (REA) is the result of collaboration between Ontario First Nation partners, school board associations and the Ministry of Education. The REA framework was developed in collaboration with these partners to help meet the unique needs of First Nation students, particularly those from Northern and remote communities. Educational Services Staff Award Wendy Butler is the recently retired Head Secretary at E.B. Phin PS and has been an integral part of the team for many years. She was nominated by multiple students, parents and staff for this award. Butler always made everyone feel welcome, she helped to organize special events and was a great support to students and staff. The Educational Services Staff Award recognizes a staff/team member affiliated with CUPE, from among the office-clerical-technical staff, custodial and maintenance staff, and educational assistants.   • Parent Reaching Out Grants 2019-2020

    Superintendent Heather Mundy introduced Terry Fox PS Principal Deirdre Morgenstern and Grade 6 Teacher Toufan Arieb and they made a presentation regarding the Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grants and the success they have had with parents and family engagement events at their school. The PRO Grant program provided funding to school boards to work with parent stakeholder groups, School Community Councils, and Parent Involvement Committees with the focus on the identification and removal of barriers that prevent parents and families from participating and engaging fully in their children’s learning. When parents and families are involved in their children’s education, there is increased student achievement and well-being.

    DDSB Math Plan and Ministry Target Schools

    Superintendents Stephen Nevills and Silvia Peterson introduced Education Officer, K-8 Linda Ford-Decunha; Education Officer, Curriculum 7-12, eLearning Kandis Thompson; Glen St. PS Principal Michelle Carter; and Primary Math Lead Elizabeth Burke. They presented an update to the Board of Trustees in regard to the DDSB Elementary and Secondary Math Plan. Based on findings from the Ministry of Education, 14 schools in total were targeted to improve fundamental skills and performance, problem solving and increase students’ employability in the future. This is an ongoing project, which the Student Achievement and Curriculum Department will continue to lead and support.

    Make a Difference – Re:Source Depot con’tSuperintendent Jim Markovski introduced Manager, Early Years and Poverty Strategy Claire Morgan and Community Development Coordinator Ana Marzhar from Durham’s Child Nutrition Program to present about the Make a Difference – Re:Source Depot that opened on September 25, 2019. Companies and organizations have donated items such as food, clothing and school supplies to the Depot that is open to educators to help students, both inside and outside the classroom. The Steering Committee will continue to develop the necessary partnerships and oversee projects that continue to make a difference in the lives of students and families living in poverty.
