GOTHAM CHAPTER BRANDEIS NATIONAL COMMITTEE

A TASTE OF BRANDEIS

Wednesday, September 12 10:30 am - Brandeis House 12 East 77th Street

Suzanne Braun Levine MEET AND GREET BRUNCH

Members, please come and bring your friends to have fun, enjoy a gourmet brunch, and get a taste of what a Brandeis Program is like. This is an opportunity to renew your membership or join Brandeis for the first time and meet other members including Gotham Chapter officers and members of the board. Guests and new members will have the chance to ask us in person what we do for Brandeis and about our interesting and fun-filled events. Any current Brandeis member who brings a new member will be able to attend all eight sessions of our stimulating Wednesday Study Groups for free if the new member pays the annual dues by October 1.

Program

"Ongoing Conversation with Women in Second Adulthood"

SPEAKER – Suzanne Braun Levine

We are very fortunate to have this wise, articulate and delightful woman as our speaker. Suzanne is a writer, editor and nationally recognized authority on women, family issues and media. She was the first editor of Ms. magazine and the only woman editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. She is an advisor to several women’s and media groups, organizations dealing with midlife transitions and on the Board of Civic Ventures, a nonprofit think tank on boomers, work and social purpose. Suzanne's newest book: HOW WE LOVE NOW: Sex and the New Intimacy in Second Adulthood is the groundbreaking, funny, poignant and sometimes shocking "next chapter" in Levine's ongoing conversation with Women in Second Adulthood.

Please stay for the monthly Board meeting after the brunch at 1:00. Board meetings are always open to all Brandeis members.

Make your reservations by September 1st for you and your guests.

Call Pat Glickman (212) 486-3976 or email to [email protected] or

Francoise Marcus (212) 787-0811 or email to [email protected]

"Philanthropy is the reason we have joined together on behalf of Brandeis University, study groups are the benefits, and friendship and intellectual stimulation are our rewards."

SUSTAINING THE MIND: SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP

Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Autism: all scary words that remind us of loved ones we have helped deal with these brain-related disorders. At Brandeis University researchers in over 50 laboratories are already making pioneering strides which have become increasingly important in the area of neurodegenerative diseases. We invite you, as a member of the Gotham Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee, to participate in the Sustaining the Mind Campaign. The goal for this new three year campaign is $3 million to establish the Brandeis National Committee Endowed Scientific Research and Scholarship Fund. The campaign gifts will provide for an endowed fund for research in the neurosciences and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as an endowed scholarship fund for students in the sciences. In addition, for donors of $1,000 or more, the Gotham Chapter will have a special Sustaining the Mind event in the spring. All gifts must be completed in the Brandeis fiscal year from July 2012 - June 2013. Categories are: $1,000 - donor receives acknowledgment letter from BNC, becomes Sustainer of the campaign (for year in which gift is given) and name will be listed on BNC website with donor approval $5,000 and above - donor receives same recognition as above and their designated name will be inscribed on our Major Donor Tribute Wall in the Library $10,000 and above - same recognition as above and donor will receive periodic stewardship letters with information about the neuroscience/neurodegenerative disease research taking place at Brandeis and about a student in the sciences who receives scholarship support. The link to Sustaining the Mind donating page through the Brandeis website is https://alumni.brandeis.edu/makingyourgift/sustainingthemind The link for more information on the campaign through the Brandeis website is http://www.brandeis.edu/bnc/philanthropy/sustaining-the-mind.html Donors who wish to pay in increments of $100 or more may do so by special arrangement. For further information or to make payments by credit card, please contact Carole Weinberg, [email protected] or call 212-737-4044. (Our committee for this campaign is in formation).

LETTER FROM MIRIAM HALIMI Our Brandeis University student liaison Miriam Halimi is now a senior and has written of her experience with the neuroscience departments at Brandeis University labs and classes:

“This coming fall will begin my final year at Brandeis University. The past three years have exposed me to some of the most phenomenal, groundbreaking achievements in neuroscience. My experiences at the labs and in classes here on campus have inspired me to the point of truly knowing what I am destined to do for the rest of my life. Having spent my undergraduate career taking various science courses as a biology major on the pre-medical track, I now feel prepared to conquer my most challenging endeavor yet—the MCAT. One course in particular has proven to be especially significant to my studies here: Neurobiology of the Human Disease, taught by Professor Gregory Petsko. Through his generous words of wisdom and genuine devotion to his field of study, he has inspired me to dedicate my future to the study of the brain; more specifically, neuroendocrinology: the interaction between hormones and different parts of the brain. After taking his class, I began volunteering at a local hospice with patients suffering from various neurodegenerative diseases, among other ailments. As an undergraduate, I am fortunate enough to feel I have already discovered my passion and aspire to become a physician with a specialty of geriatric neuroendocrinology. I plan to spend my final year at Brandeis as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry and hopefully attain a research position at Professor Petsko’s lab. I am so grateful for the support that has allowed me to attend Brandeis and as the new student representative for the BNC National Board, I know how important it is to continue to gain support for all of the university’s greatest accomplishments. This support will prove to be invaluable for myself as well as the many other student and professional scientists at Brandeis as we go forward with our contributions to the scientific advancements of the future.”

ANNUAL BOOK AND AUTHOR LUNCHEON – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5 11:30 a.m. – The Harmonie Club, 4 East 60th Street

We are pleased to present another group of outstanding authors: Julie Salamon, Michael Gross, and Eric Van Lustbader. Please mark the date on your calendar. Invitations will go out at summer's end. This is guaranteed to be an elegant and stimulating afternoon; we hope to see all of you there. Michael Gross One of America's most provocative non-fiction writers he has authored eleven books. His latest, Unreal Estate spent 15 weeks on the Los Angeles Times best seller list and is in development as an HBO mini series. Author of the best seller expose's 740 Park Avenue and Rogue's Gallery (about the Metropolitan Museum of Art) he is now writing a new book entitled Fifteen Central Park West. His journalism has appeared in Vanity Fair, Newsweek, New York and The New York Times. Eric Van Lustbader He has published more than twenty-five best selling novels including The Ninja, in which he introduced Nicholas Linnear, one of modern fiction's most beloved heroes, continuing his exploits in five subsequent best sellers. His novels have been translated in over twenty languages and are worldwide best sellers. He was asked by the Estate of the late Robert Ludlum to continue the Jason Bourne series. The Bourne Identity continues and updates the adventures of Ludlum's famous international assassin. He has gone on to write five more Bourne novels, including The Bourne Imperative, which has just made the New York Times' best seller lists. Julie Salamon The author of many best-selling novels as well as the film classic The Devil's Candy, was previously a culture writer for The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. She has also written for The New Yorker Vanity Fair, Vogue and The New Republic. Wendy and The Lost Boys: The Uncommon Life of Wendy Wasserstein was written with the full cooperation of the Wasserstein family and literary executives. The life revealed is of a brilliant but complicated American artist, one who struggled both creatively and personally, and who fiercely held private a life she seemed so willing to explore in her plays.

All money raised at this event will go to "Sustaining the Mind", a Brandeis’ initiative supporting neurodegenerative disease research.
