Dear B’nai Jacob family,
The Treasure
This story should be familiar to
you. It is a classic and has an
important moral.
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov tells it
this way:
“A man once dreamed that there
was a great treasure under a bridge
in Vienna. He traveled to Vienna
and stood near the bridge, trying to
figure out what to do. He did not
dare search for the treasure by day,
because of the many people who
were there.
An officer passed by and asked,
‘What are you doing, standing here
and contemplating?’ The man
decided that it would be best to tell
the whole story and ask for help,
hoping that [the officer] would
share the treasure with him. He
told the officer the entire story.
The officer replied, ‘A Jew is
concerned only with dreams! I also
had a dream, and I also saw a
treasure. It was in a small house,
under the cellar.’
In relating his dream, the officer
accurately described the man’s city
and house. The man rushed home,
dug under his cellar, and found the
treasure. He said, ‘Now I know
that I had the treasure all along.
But in order to find it, I had to
travel to Vienna’ (Rebbe
Nachman’s Parables, The
Treasure).
I have always liked this story. At
the present I understand its
message to each of us, as our
congregation and Jewish
community become smaller. We
have witnessed many of our
friends and family who have
moved away from Fort Wayne and
some of them who have passed
away.
Yet, even with this occurring, we
should never lose sight of the fact
that we have a veritable treasure
right here within our “Jewish
home”, our Jewish community.
Whether on a congregational level
or community one, we have
services, life cycle events and
cultural, artistic, musical events, as
well as scholars-in-residence.
Thanks to the generosity of the
Harry Salon Foundation, our
congregations and Jewish
Federation have brought in
speakers and entertainers that

would otherwise be beyond our means to procure.
Later in this bulletin, you will see some pictures of an event
that took place recently, when the Jewish Federation and our
community continued to fete the 70th anniversary of Israel
with a celebration, which included the Yiddishe Cup
Klezmer Band. (Thank you to Mark Cole for the pictures!)
As in the opening story, the treasure was right here in our
community. It is only buried if we don’t join in. If you
were present, you were among the people who had a
thoroughly enjoyable time filled with fantastic music.
And, we also learned different dances!
My hope is that each of you reading this column may
make a resolution. (After all, it is not that much past the
High Holidays to still make our New Year’s resolutions!)
Please look carefully at the events sponsored by the
Jewish Federation and our congregations. Once you go to
them, you will understand how much they have to offer.
We publicize them in our What’s Happening and in our
bulletins. (Later in this bulletin, you will see how we are
observing Jewish Global Learning.)
One last request. I would urge you to make one Saturday
morning a month sacrosanct, if you aren’t regularly
coming. Once a month, come to our services and stay for
kiddush to socialize with your friends. If you do, I hope
you will enjoy it and want to come back again!
May you find the treasure right here in your home.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Mitchell Kornspan

Thanksgiving Turkeys for Thoughtful Thursdays In November, the Jewish community’s social action program will provide each of the 70
families with a 10- to 12-pound turkey for Thanksgiving, cooking instructions, and
trimmings. Through generous donations to Thoughtful Thursdays’ 8th annual Apple
Project we were able to provide a bag of Honey Crisp apples in mid-October to each
family. We are seeking donations of $18 each from 35 people to help us purchase enough
turkeys for all the families. We welcome additional volunteers to our next bag assembly
morning on Wednesday, November 7 at 10 a.m. at the Rifkin Campus.
Interfaith Thanksgiving Service Brings Community Together Fort Wayne’s annual community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be on Tuesday,
November 20 at 7 p.m., hosted for a seventh year at the Temple. Representatives of 12
religious organizations will participate, including Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist,
and Bahai congregations. The guest speaker is the Rev. Angelo Mante of Simpson United

Art Exhibit Gives Unique Take on Shabbat “The Seventh Day: Revisiting Shabbat” is a traveling art exhibit in the Temple’s Social
Hall through Thanksgiving featuring 36 works of photography, textile, collage, and
painting that explore some aspect of the Jewish Sabbath. On loan from the Hebrew Union
College - Jewish Institute of Religion Museum, the collection features 36 pieces created
by international artists representing a diverse, 21st-century approach to this day of rest.
The exhibit is open to the public on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. and during other
hours for groups by appointment.
Yiddishe Cup Klezmer band The Yiddishe Cup klezmer bands came to Fort Wayne at the Rifkin Campus
