Hanukkah Quiz

Dear B’nai Jacob family and

Friends,

An Important Personal Message

I am writing this article to inform

you that I will be leading my last

Shabbat service June 15th, 2019.

Thereafter I will enter a new stage

of life----retirement.

Even as I write this, there is so

much I want to share with you, but

I will do this in the future. I

remember when Penny and I came

here fourteen years ago, Chanukah

of 2004. It has been almost a

decade and a half I served as your

Rabbi, and forty-six years since I

first became a Rabbi. The time

flew by like the twinkling of an

eye!

I hope I have succeeded in

teaching and following the

instruction of our great Sages, that

the main fundamental command in

Judaism upon which all others are

based is “Love your neighbor as

yourself.”

I have referred to you as B’nai

Jacob family, because my fervent

hope was always that we should

feel close to each other, be of help

to each other, and to love each

other. And, even when members of

our family had differing views, my

expectation was that you respect

each other and care about each

other, despite any disagreement.

As I reflect on the journey we have

taken together, I resonate with the

teachings of the Midrash

Tanchuma that understands the 42

stages of the Children of Israel’s

journeying in this way:

“It is analogous to a king whose

son became sick, so he took him to

a far away place to have him

healed. On the way back, the father

began citing all the stages of their

journey, saying to him, “This is

where we sat, here we were cold,

here you had a headache etc.”

The part that moves me is the

explanation of the journey. In our

case, we journeyed and brought the

congregation together. I was

thrilled when someone returned to

B’nai Jacob, moved to town and

became affiliated, or stated that

they wanted to choose Judaism.

Each of you and your families I

remember with feelings of

gratitude and joy.

I also recall sadly the members we

lost because of employment

opportunities elsewhere, because

(Continued on page 2)

The first night of Hanukkah

begins at sundown on

Sunday, December 2.

of moving away, and because of their passing away. Each of them have a special place in my heart.

I loved being part of your journey as children or grandchildren were born, named, became a Bar or Bat

Mitzvah, were confirmed, graduated and married. These were such momentous times in our lives together!

I’ll never forget how on the 51st anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah, Penny arranged a surprise celebration on that

Shabbat and all the B’nai Mitzvah students I had taught were in shul and participated in services.

Everyone of you is important to me, and I want to thank you who have learned and continue to learn with me

in our classes and to all of you who are supporting our ongoing services.

I close with one request. If there is a memory you have that you would like to share with me, please write it to

me. I will treasure it as a special keepsake from you.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you in shul.

Penny and I wish you all a very happy Chanukah.

With friendship and love,

Rabbi Mitchell Kornspan

(Continued from page 1)

One Community, Two Traditions… During the High Holidays, I brought to the attention of our congregation the formation of the B'Yachad (Together)

committee. This committee, comprised of leadership from Congregation B'nai Jacob and Congregation Achduth Vesholom, has met several times since this summer to dialogue about a possible partnership. At this time, it is important for the members of our congregation to be updated on what has transpired. A rudimentary proposal has been developed that outlines a plan for Congregation B'nai Jacob to move to the Rifkin campus. This initial draft was presented to the Board of Directors of both congregations and was unanimously approved. As the B'Yachad committee continues to meet and subcommittees start forming, you can expect to receive from me in the next couple of weeks a letter that will provide more details of how this partnership will proceed.

"That which unites us is far greater than that which divides us." Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935)

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to wish each of you a very Happy Hanukkah! May the lights shine bright for courage and freedom, justice and peace, hope and rededication, memory and blessings, and for unity! How fitting it is that on the Shabbat of Hanukkah we read from the prophet Zechariah and his vision of the golden Temple Menorah. This symbol of unity was constructed from one solid piece of gold. The Menorah, as a single entity not joined together from different pieces, is a symbol of the Jewish people.

President, Pamela Friedman

JEWISH COMMUNITY NEWS

Rosh Chodesh Hanukkah Fun

The Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne’s Rosh Chodesh women’s group is having a

Hanukkah celebration on Monday, December 3 at 6 p.m. at the Allen County Main

Library (2nd floor Business and Technology room). We'll have latkes and other goodies,

crafting, light the menorah, and celebrate the holiday with song, friends and fun. The

group is open to all women who are Federation members. RSVP to the Federation office

at (260) 456-0400 by Friday, November 30.

USF Lecture Series at Aboite Library

“Hitler, Nazism, and the German Resistance” will be the topic of a talk by Dr. Barry

Jackisch, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Social Sciences

at the University of Saint Francis, on Wednesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. at the Aboite

Branch of the Allen County Public Library. His talk will examine various forms of

resistance to Hitler and the Nazi state during the Third Reich. He’ll look at the

possibilities and limitations of resistance and offer an overview of scholarly writing on the

topic intended for a general audience.

Thoughtful Thursdays In November, the Jewish community’s social action program provided each of the 70

Brightpoint Head Start families with a 10- to 12-pound turkey with trimmings for

Thanksgiving. We are seeking donations of boxes of tissues, toilet paper, and band-aids.

We always welcome additional volunteers to our bag assembly events on Wednesdays,

December 5 and January 9 at 10 a.m. at the Rifkin Campus.

Documentary on Eva Kor The New Haven High School invites the community to a screening of the film

documentary "Eva A-7063" on Sunday, December 9, followed by a Q&A session with

Emmy-winner Ted Green, the film's writer and producer. The screening begins at 4:30

p.m. at Impact Community Church, 909 Main Street, in New Haven. Admission is free,

but donations will be accepted as a fundraiser to help cover the costs of new books.

The newly-released documentary is about Eva Mozes Kor, a survivor of Auschwitz, who

at age 10 became a subject of inhumane twin experiments by the notorious Nazi doctor

Josef Mengele. Eva has emerged as the leading global figure in the fight to keep the

lessons of the Holocaust alive, delivering a message at once controversial and immensely

powerful: Forgiveness.

Hanukkah Storytime The Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne is partnering with Barnes & Noble – Jefferson

Pointe to bring a special story time about Hanukkah. We will meet on Sunday, December

9 at noon Barnes & Noble – Jefferson Pointe. We will hear stories about Hanukkah, light

a Hanukkiah, play the dreidel game, and do a craft. This event is free and open to the

public. Special thank you to the Dr. Harry W. Salon Foundation for its continued support.
