A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN…

Both the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Christian celebration of Easter come at the onset of spring—a time when we prepare and look towards a future physical and spiritual rebirth. Christians prepare for their holy week, the time when they believe Jesus died and was resurrected, by a process of spiritual introspection during Lent. The Lenten season is a time for reflection; abstaining from meat and giving up physical indulgences is meant to prepare the faithful and to teach spiritual discipline. The external and physical is meant to pave the way for the spiritual.

Jews, for our part, adopt a similar approach during Passover. We remove bread from our lives to promote a spiritual process. In antiquity, before commercial yeast, bread rose only through the process of natural fermentation. A small amount of dough, left out, attracted microbes that helped the bread to rise, giving it a mildly sour taste. In fact, the word chametz which we use to describe all leaven goods, literally means sour. Vinegar and pickles both share the same Hebrew root, reminding of this natural fermentation process.

Our sages, looking at this natural process, wondered why we remove chametz from our lives. They suggested two reasons: first, chametz is risen, and puffy—representing an over estimated sense of self and an ego that needs to be brought into control. We remove the chametz from our homes to teach us that we should embrace—at least for a week—the humility and modesty symbolized by the matzah. And chametz is sour—a reminder that we should, as best we can, try to embrace cheerfulness, as we recite in the Shabbat service darcheyha darchey noam ve’chol netivoteyha shalom: “Torah’s ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”

This year, as Jews and Christians around the world prepare for the spring, let us strive to create pathways of peace and understanding. May the physical work of the holiday—the cooking and cleaning, the abstaining from bread—be a pathway to a spiritually fulfilling life, a season filled with family and friends, and above all, spiritual growth.

Best wises for a Happy Passover and a Sweet Spring.

Rabbi Stein

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE …

We are pleased that Bnai Abraham Synagogue entered into a renewal contract with Rabbi Stein as the result of our congregational meeting on February 10, 2013. Congratulations to Rabbi Stein, and thanks to all members who participated in our congregational meeting, as well as to our Board of Trustees and Danny Cohen for their work in reviewing and implementing the renewal contract.

As we turn towards the Spring, we will focus our efforts on planning for the future at Bnai Abraham. Our Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Sara Levin, will work towards identifying and obtaining specific goals for each facet of synagogue life. We will formulate an interactive and evaluative process by which Bnai Abraham and Rabbi Stein will review our recent activities and define and implement strategy for making necessary improvements. We will work to strengthen our relationships within the Lehigh Valley, through the Easton Leadership Council of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley and otherwise.

Bnai Abraham exists to better the lives of its members and of our community. The commitment of our many volunteers and our staff is a testament to our shared values. Please do not hesitate to make any suggestions to help Bnai Abraham improve and grow.

Best regards, Scott A. Levin President [email protected]

Ritual Challenge for March

Genesis 27:13-But his [Jacob's] mother said to him, "Your curse, my son, be upon me! Just do as I say---”. Rebecca overhears Isaac ask Esau to bring some game and prepare a dish so that Isaac will then bless him. She instructs Jacob to impersonate Esau and take Esau's blessing. When Jacob is concerned that his father will find him out and then Jacob would bring upon him a curse not a blessing, Rebecca claims any curse will be upon her. In what way in Genesis did Rebecca receive a punishment for what she instigated?

The best answer to this ritual challenge will win a free super gala deluxe men's club brunch. Send answers to [email protected] or leave a message at 610-253-3481.

Ritual Challenge Answer from January

Why did Rabbi Arthur Waskow translate Israel as "God-Wrestler”?

Jacob, after tricking Esau out of his blessing, goes to the river and wrestles with a man until morning. The ancient rabbis teach that this man is actually an angel, perhaps the guardian angel of Esau, with whom Jacob has spent a lifetime in contention.

Finally, Jacob demands of the angel a blessing. The angel says, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men and have been able [to do so].” In a neat turn of phrase, Rabbi Arthur Wadskow translates Israel as "God- Wrestler" because Jacob has known struggle throughout his life, contention with human beings and wrestling within himself to come to terms with his relationship with God. Is it appropriate that Israel has been attached not just to Jacob but to us as a people.

Winners of challenge are Eva Grayzel and Larry Kaplan.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE ROBERT KUTNER LIBRARY? MARCH 10, 2012 – 1:30 p.m.

As many of you know, the family of Robert Kutner maintains a special fund at Bnai Abraham for our Library. Over the past year, that fund has allowed the majority of Bnai Abraham’s collection (nearly 1200 books so far) to be cataloged online; you can view our online catalog here:

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/bnaiabraham

Also, because of the Library Fund, we are among the first subscribers to an ambitious new translation of the Babylonian Talmud into English. The Koren Talmud, based on the scholarship of Adin Steinsaltz, is considered by many to be the most exciting development in Talmud scholarship in recent years.

Of course, there is still work to be done! On March 10th, at 1:30 PM, we invite anyone in the community with a laptop computer to join us as we finish cataloging; there are about 400 books left to go, and as soon as they are cataloged and shelved, we are done! The cataloging is a simple process, and takes about 5 minutes to learn. If you are available, please email Rabbi Daniel Stein [email protected] so that we can have an accurate count.

Thanks so much! Rabbi Stein Bnai Abraham Synagogue

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These three words are applicable to a wide variety of things and situations Paper is a precious commodity and comes from trees, one of our dwindling natural resources. Stay conscious of the need to conserve paper, and rethink some of your work or school printing practices. This will cut down on wasted paper and will decrease the amount of new paper that needs to be purchased. Don't print things unless absolutely necessary. Try not to print emails. Back up files on your computer using multiple electronic methods and locations. If you still have old one-sided sheets of paper around, use them for printing, copying, or as a notepad for taking notes. And always recycle paper rather than throwing it in the trash.
